HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
WARNING! This appliance must NOT be used in a bathroom or
in the immediate surroundings of a bath, shower or swimming
pool.
WARNING! This appliance MUST be Earthed.
This Stove must only be used on a 230V 50Hz a.c. supply. It is
provided with a 13 amp 3 pin plug with integral mains lead. In the
event of replacing the fuse in the plug, a 13 amp fuse approved by
ASTA to BS1362 must be used.
WARNING! The Heat Outlet Grill, located below the shelf, must
NOT be covered. The air inlet beneath the stove must also be
kept clear.
This appliance must only be used in the upright position, standing
on its 4 feet.
The Stove carries a ‘DO NOT COVER’ w arning to alert the user
to the risk of fire that exists if the heat outlet is accidentally
covered.
STANDARDS & REGULATIONS
In addition to these instructions the requirements of BS EN 60335-
1:1995 (Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances) must
be fulfilled.
PERFORMANCE
The output of the stove can be switched to give 1 or 2kW, and an
adjustable thermostat controls the ambient temperature, allowing the
stove to switch off when it reaches the set value.
The Flame Effect may be operated without the heater, but if the
heating elements are on, the flame effect will automatically be on.
SPECIFICATIONS
UNPACKING
Unpack the Stove carefully and stand it upright on its 4 feet. Locate
the small bag of fuel supplied with the stove. Open the door by pulling
the handle towards you, and arrange the fuel on the fibreglass fire
effect to give a pleasing and realistic effect of a coal fire. Close the
door and push the handle firmly towards the door. Locate the
thermostat knob and push it on to the white ‘D’ shaped thermostat
spindle, on the left hand side of the stove.
LOCATION OF THE STOVE
Always ensure that the Stove stands on a firm level base near a
suitable mains supply socket. The Stove must be positioned so that the
socket is easily accessible. It must not be directly below the socket.
The Stove will usually be positioned against a wall, but if required
further out into the room, ensure that the mains cord is routed so as
not to cause a hazard. Ensure that furniture and curtains cannot come
so close to the stove to cause a fire hazard. To avoid marking floor
coverings due to the stove weight, it is advised that some form of
protection is used underneath the stove feet.
CONNECTION
THIS APPLIANCE MUST BE EARTHED.
Connection is made to the 230Va.c. 50Hz mains supply via a 13 amp
plug and socket. The appliance comes with a 13 amp plug already
fitted, and this includes the protective earth wire.
If a 13 amp plug is not suitable for your socket, an appropriate plug
may be fitted, provided it is capable of safely passing 10 amps of
current and contains a 13 amp fuse either in the plug, adaptor or at
the distribution board.

IMPORTANT!
The wires in the mains cord are coloured in accordance with the
following code:
Green & Yellow ------------------------ EARTH
Blue ----------------------------------------- NEUTRAL
Brown -------------------------------------- LIVE
This appliance must NOT be wired into a lighting socket.
USING THE STOVE
WARNING - This stove carries a ‘DO NOT COVER’ w arning to
alert the user to the risk of fire that exists if the heater outlet is
accidentally covered.
After ensuring that the stove has been correctly positioned and
installed, plug in and switch on at the wall socket. If all the 3 rocker
switches are in the ‘0’ position, there should be no response from the
stove.
Flame Effect
The flame effect is switched on by the rocker switch nearest to the
back of the stove, as in Fig. 1. It may be run on its own without either
heating element on. The flame pattern may initially take a few
minutes to establish. When it is switched off, the heating elements are
automatically switched off.
Low Output - 1kW
Set the middle switch to ‘I’ for low output. The fan heater will start
with 1 element switched on to give an output of 1kW controlled by
the thermostat. If the flame effect is off, then the action of switching
on the low output will switch the flame effect on also.
High Output - 2kW
Set the front switch to ‘I’ for high output. The other two switches will
automatically be set on, thus ensuring that the flame effect and both
heating elements are on, giving 2kW of heat output controlled by the
thermostat.
Thermostat Operation
The heat output relative to the room temperature is governed by the
thermostat, so that the stove will not produce unnecessary heat when
the room is hot.
To set your required temperature, first turn the knob to read number
9 from the top (max heat). When the room is warm enough, turn the
knob towards a lower number until the thermostat clicks off. The
stove will now sustain the set temperature.
OVERHEAT PROTECTION
If the stove overheats for any reason, a thermal cutout in the element
operates and the heater is switched off. Determine the reason for
overheat, rectify, then reset the stove by switching off for a few
minutes.
Moving The Stove
DO NOT move the stove when it is switched on.
Switch off and unplug the mains cord before moving.
Ensure that the door is firmly shut, and lift the stove by its top. If you
are at all in doubt about your ability to lift the stove, obtain some
assistance and do not risk damaging your back. When placing down
in the desired location, take care not to trap the mains cord under the
feet. The stove must be placed on a firm level base. To avoid marking
floor coverings due to the stove weight, it is advised that some form
of protection is used underneath the stove feet.
REMEMBER that the stove must NOT be located in a bathroom,
shower room or in the immediate vicinity of a swimming pool.

Cleaning The Stove
WARNING - ALWAYS DISCONNECT FROM THE MAINS
SUPPLY BEFORE CLEANING THE STOVE.
Do not use detergents or abrasive cleaning powder on the body of
the stove. Allow the stove to cool, and use a dry cloth to remove any
dust, and a damp cloth to clean off stains. The glass in the door may
be cleaned with a ceramic hob cleaner.
Do NOT allow moisture into the stove.
If the stove becomes stained, or if a colour scheme change is
required, then a range of special spray paints is available from the
manufacturers.
Flame Effect Lamp Replacement
The lamp in your Charnwood Compton Stove should give many
hours of service, and can be replaced without using any tools.
Proceed as follows:
1. Switch off and disconnect from the mains supply.
2. Open the door, remove the front fence, lift off the coals, raise the
acrylic screen and lift out the fibreglass coal effect. Some
manoeuvring is necessary to remove this.
3. Lift the right-hand end of the bulb and sleeve out of its clip (see Fig.
2), then unplug the bulb, moving it towards the right. Slide the sleeve
off and discard the old bulb. Slide the sleeve onto the new bulb and
insert the bulb base into the holder on the left. Ensure that the bulb is
pushed fully home, then lower the right-hand end and press it into
the clip. Replace the fibreglass coal effect, with the rear edge passing
just under the acrylic screen. Re-fit the front fence and replace the
coals. Close the door securely.
Supply Cord Replacement
If the mains supply cord is damaged it must be replaced by the
manufacturer, its service agent or a similarly qualified person to avoid
a hazard.
This product is in compliance with the essential requirements and
other provisions of Directives 73/23/EEC and 89/336/EEC as
amended by Directive 93/68/EEC. These include the European
Safety Standard EN60335-2-30 and the European Standard for
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) EN55014.
