LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE
Lubricants areclassifiedandgradedaccordingto
standardsrecommendedbytheSocietyof Automo-
tive Engineers (SAE), theAmericanPetroleumIn-
stitute (API)andthe National Grease Institute
(NLGI).
The SAEgradenumberindicatestheviscosityor
fluidity of thelubricant.(Example,SAE30)engine
oils mayhavea dualnumber,oneof which isSAE
10W-30. This marking indicatesthattheoiliscom-
parabletoSAE10W,SAE20WandSAE30 grades
(seeParagraph00).
The APIdesignationsrelatetothetypeofservice
for which theengineoilisrecommended.Thethree
designationsare"MS," "MM" and "ML." All1960
carenginesrequiretheMS oils.
Both theSAEnumberandtheMSdesignation
should bemarkedonthecontainer.
The National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI)
makestherecommendationsfor greases bynumber-
ing them from 0 to6.Thenumbersrefertothe
consistency(orstiffness)ofthe grease.

Enginesrequire ventilation throughthe cylinder
headcoversandcrankcasetoremovecombustion
products. Airenterstheenginethroughtheoil
filler cap,whereanydustistrappedbytheoil-soaked
material inthecap(Fig.1).

The aircleanershouldbecleanedinkeroseneand
reoiled with SAE30engineoilateachoilchange
period oroftener;industy areas as often as500
miles; inextremelydusty areas daily.
The paperelementcarburetoraircleanershould
becleanedas often asconditionswarrantbutnot
to exceed5,000 mile intervals;anda newelement
should beinstalledat15,000 mile intervals(Fig.2).
After removingtheaircleaner from thecarbu-
retor, cleanthehousingandcover with compressed
air. Using compressedair,gentlycleanthepaper
elementby holding theairnozzleatleasttwoinches
from theinsidescreen.Examinethepaperelement
for punctures.Discardanelementthathasas little
asa pin-point puncture.Examinethesoftplastic
sealer onboth sides oftheelement.Thesesealing

9. COOLMG SYSTEM
All modelsareequipped with a 180°thermostat.The
cooling systemshouldbedrainedandflushed inthe
spring andagaininthe fall.
Usecleanwaterandcorrosion inhibitor P/N00
in thesummer,ifanethylene-glycolantifreezesolu-
tion isnotdesired.Thecoolingsystemof cars
equipped with heater-airconditioning systems must
beprotectedtoat least +15°F. atalltimestoavoid
freezing the heater core.
Most antifreezesolutionscontaina corrosion inhib-
itor. However,inordertoprovideproperprotection
againstcorrosionofthecoolingsystem,a solution
of at least 20%antifreezemustbe used. A 20%
solution will provideantifreezeprotectionof -j-15°F.
for ethylene-glycoltypeantifreezeand +10°F. for
methanoltype.(Ifmethanoltypeantifreezeis used
a160 degree thermostatmustbeinstalled.)
NOTE: In some areasthewateravailablehasa
highmineral content. Suchwaterswhenaddedto
thecoolingsystemcancausecorrosionandpre-
maturedeteriorationofthecoolingsystemcom-
ponents unlessadequateprecautionarymeasuresare
taken.

11. ENGINE OIL
Original factory fill engineoilinnew cars is espe-
cially compoundedfornew engines andshouldbe
used throughoutthe first 1,000milesofoperation.
Theengineoil change period will vary widely
dependinguponthetypeofoperation,weathercon-
ditions andotheroperatingvariables.Short trip
driving in cold weatheror driving ondusty roads
canmakeoil changes advisableasfrequentlyas
every500miles, while cross-country driving day
afterday, with good oils, maypermit 5,000 milesof
operationbetween changes. Asa generalrule, aver-
age driving will indicatethattheengineoilshould
bechangedeverytwomonthsor2,000miles, which-
everoccurs first.
Theengineoillevelshouldbechecked each time
thecarisrefueled.Whentheleveldropsbelowthe
"Add Oil"markontheengineoillevelindicator
(dipstick) (Fig.7)theadditionofonequartofoil
will usuallybringthelevel within therunningrange.
When addingorchangingengine oil, uselubricants
which have boththeSAEdesignationandtheMS
ServiceClassificationprintedonthecontainer. High
quality, well refinedengineoilsusually have both
classificationsonthecontainers.Choiceof brands
shouldincludethereputationoftherefinerand
marketer.

Both ends ofthetorsionbar rear anchorandthe
rear endofthe front anchorshould have a sufficient
amountofmulti-purpose grease topreventtheen-
tranceofwater,dustandmudorotherforeign
matter.
e.UniversalJoints
Universal jointsshouldberemoved,disassembled,
cleaned,inspected,andlubricated with fresh lubri-
cant.SeeGroup16.
f.HeadLamps
Checktheaimingofall head lamps.
g. Tires
Tiresshouldbeexaminedforabnormalwear,un-
usualwearpattern,foreignmaterialandlackof
adequate air pressure each timethecaris lubri-
cated.Suchconditionsindicatethatmechanical
correctionsare necessary orreflectunusual driving
habits.

a. Fluid Level
The fluid levelshouldbecheckedevery1,000miles
or 2 months,whicheveroccurs first. Whenchecking,
theengineandtransmissionshouldbeatnormal
operatingtemperature.
(1)With theparkingbrakeonandtheengine
idling, depress each pushbuttonmomentarily,end-
ingwith the"N"(Neutral)buttonpushedin.
(2) The fluid levelshouldcheckatthe full mark,
or slightly below,butnever above the"F"mark
when theengineisatitsnormalwarmedcondition
describedabove.Addor delete fluid as necessary to
bring tothisprescribedlevel(Fig.12).
CAUTION
To preventdirtfromenteringthetransmissionafter
checkingorreplenishingfluid, makecertainthat
thedipstickcapisreseatedproperly onto thefiller
tube.
If itis necessary tocheckthe fluid levelwhenthe
transmissionis cold, the fluid levelshouldbeat,or

b. PeriodicMaintenance
The following maintenanceserviceshouldbeper-
formed every10,000milesofoperation,oroneyear,
whichever occurs first:
NOTE: Forserviceoperationsuchas;policecars,
and cars which frequentlytowtrailers,operatein
heavy traffic inhotweatheroroperatecontinuously
with abnormalloadsshouldhavemorefrequent
periodic maintenance.Automatictransmissionshould
not be idled in gear for long periods.
(1) Remove filler tube from transmissionoilpan
and allow transmissiontodrain(Fig.13).
(2) Remove flywheel access plateandremovethe
torqueconverterdrain plug and allow todrain.
(3) Replacethetorqueconverterdrain plug.
(4) Removetransmissionoilpan.Cleantheintake
screenandpan.
(5) Adjust thereversebandforPowerFliteor
thelow-reversebandforTorqueFlite.(SeeGroup
21.)
(6) Adjust the kickdown band.(SeeGroup21.)
(7) Adjust thepushbuttoncable.(SeeGroup21.)
(8) Reinstalltheintakescreen,oilpan,and filler
tube.Be sure tousea newgasket.
(9) Add five (5)quartsofAutomaticTrans-
mission Fluid, Type"A," Suffix "A"throughthe
filler tube.
(10) Startengineandaddapproximatelythree
(3) quartsmore while theengineidles.
(11) Allow engineto idle foratleasttwo(2)
minutes.
(12) Operateallpushbuttons,pausingmomen-
tarily ateach position, ending with the"N"(Neu-
tral) buttonpushedin.
(13) Add sufficient fluid to bring the fluid level
to the"AddOnePint"mark.
(14) Adjust line pressure tospecificationsout-
lined inGroup21.
(15) Adjust engine idle at475to500rpmin
Neutral.
(16) Adjust thetransmissionandcarburetor
throttle linkageforproper shift pattern.(SeeGroup
21.)
(17) Testcarperformance.
CAUTION
To prevent dirt from enteringthetransmission,
makecertainthatthedipstickcapisreplacedprop-
erly ontothe filler tube.
(18) PowerFlite Only: Ifstartingis difficult when
average temperaturesconsistentlyrangebelow
—10°F., replaceone(1)quartof fluid with refined
kerosene.Thisserviceshouldbeperformed only
once during thelow-temperature season. Thereafter,
necessary replenishmentofPowerFliteshouldbe
with AutomaticTransmission Fluid, Type"A,"
Suffix "A."
19. MANUAL TRANSMISSION (PS-1, PS-3 Only)
Checklubricant level at2,000milesortwomonth
intervals, eachtimethecarislubricated.Replenish
when level isbelowthe filler hole.
Drain and refill at20,000 mile ortwoyearinter-
vals, whicheveroccurs first.
UseMulti-PurposeLubricant:SAE80fortemper-

20. WHEEL BEABJNGS
Rearwheelbearingsarepre-lubricatedandrequire
lubrication only astheaxleshaftsareremovedin
conjunction with otheroperations.
Front wheelbearingsshouldbecheckedevery
10,000milesoroncea year,whicheveroccurs first.
If thelubricantisemulsified,hashardenedoris
low inquantity,thebearingsshouldberemoved,
cleaned,inspectedandnewshort fiber wheelbearing
grease (medium)installed.Thehuband grease cap
should becleanedandtheinnersurfacescoated
lightly with grease.
To adjust front wheelbearings:
(1) Tightenadjustnutto180 inch pounds while
wheel is turning.
(2) Placenut lock ornut with onesetofslots
aligned with cotterpinholeinspindle.
(3) Backoff lock andnutP/2slots. (Hole in
spindle will becovered.)
(4) Removenut lock (donot turn nut)andre-
position lock socotterpincanbeinstalled.
(5) Install cotterpinand grease cap.
