(SAE),theAmericanPetroleumIn-
stitute(API)andtheNational
Grease
Institute
(NLGI).
TheSAE
grade
numberindicatestheviscosity
or
fluidity
ofthelubricant.(Example,SAE30)en-
gineoilsmay
have
a dualnumber,oneofwhichis
SAE
10W-30.Thismarkingindicatesthattheoil
iscomparabletoSAE10W,SAE20WandSAE30
grades.
TheAPIdesignationsrelatetothetypeof
serv-
iceforwhichtheengineoilisrecommended.The
three
designationsare"MS",
"MM"
and
"ML".
All
1962car
engines
requiretheMS
oils.
Both
theSAEnumberandtheMSdesignation
shouldbemarkedonthecontainer.
TheNationalLubricating
Grease
Institute
(NLGI)
makes
therecommendationsfor
greases
by
numberingthem
from
0 to6.The
numbers
referto
theconsistency(orstiffness)ofthe
grease.
ChryslerCorporation
does
notrecommendtheuse
of
anylubricantswhichdonot
have
bothanSAE
designationandanMSserviceClassificationprinted
on
thecontainer.

FrequencyofLubrication
Theengineoil
change
period
will
varywidelyde-
pendinguponthetypeofoperation,
weather
condi-
tionsandotheroperatingvariables.Duringshort
trip
driving
incold
weather
or
driving
ondusty
roads,
theoil
changes
shouldbe
made
asfrequently
asevery500miles.Crosscountry
driving
with
good
oils
will
permit4,000milesofoperationbetween
changes.
ChryslerCorporationhasdeterminedthatthe
typeofoperationbythe
average
driverindicates
thattheengineoilshouldbe
changed
approximately
everytwomonthsfor
traffic
driving
orevery4,000
milesforhighway
driving.
Theoil
added
totheengineatthefactoryisa high
quality
oil"ForServiceMS".Itshouldbedrainedin
accordance
with
thetypeofserviceinwhichthe
caris
used
asdescribedabove,afterapproximately
2monthsof
city
traffic
operationorupto4,000miles
of
highway
driving.
New
engines
frequently
consume
some
oilduring
their
early
life.
Ifitis
necessary
toaddoilduring
this
initial
period,anoil"ForServiceMS"ofthe
properviscosity
grade
shouldbe
used.
Theengineoillevelshouldbechecked
each
time
thecarisrefueled.Whenthelevel
drops
belowthe
"Add
Oil"markontheengineoillevelindicator
(dipstick)
(Fig.3)theadditionofonequartofoil
will
usuallybringthelevel
within
therunning
range.
Whenaddingorchangingengineoil,use
lubri-
cantswhich
have
both
theSAE
designation
andthe
MS
ServiceClassificationprintedonthecontainer.
High
quality,
well
refinedengineoilsusually
have
both
classificationsonthecontainers.Choiceof
brands
shouldincludethereputationoftherefiner
andmarketer.
