FRONTWHEELSUSPENSION
TheTorsion-aireFrontSuspensionSystemFig-
ures1,2 and3 isretainedonthe1958cars.
Thisnewsuspensiongivesimprovedsteering
anddirectionalstabilitywiththeanti-brakedip
principlebuiltintothedesign,thetendencyof
thenoseofthecartodipwhenbrakingisre-
ducedtoa minimum.Torsionbarspringsalso
permitrelocatingofsteeringlinkageandcon-
trolarminnerpivotpoints,sothattheirsteer-
inggeometriesaremorenearlymatchedresult-
inginlesswheelfight becausethevertical
movementsoftheroadwheelshavelittleeffect
onthesteeringlinkage.Thenewsystemalso
offersa numberofotheradvantagesinterms
oflongerpartlifeandeaseofservicing.

LUBRICATION
Thesuspensionpointsrequiringlubricationare
effectivelysealedagainstentryofdirt,dust,
andwater,however,theupperandlowerball
jointsshouldbecarefullylubricated.Thefol-
lowinglubricatingprocedureisrecommended:
Raisethefrontofthecarinsucha manner
thattheweightofthecarisonbothlower
controlarmsascloseaspossibletotheball
joints.
NOTE:
Whenthishasbeenproperlyexecuted,
thelowerballjointwillbeunloadedandthe
uppercontrolarmreboundbumperwillbe
awayfromthestopbracketontheframe.
Applygreaseguntofitting onlowerball
jointandlubricategenerously.Triggerthe
greasegunsothatpressureisappliedintermit-
tently.Applyingthegreaseinthismannerwill
causeanupanddownmotionintheballjoint
assemblytoassistinthoroughlylubricatingthe
joint.Itisalsoadvisabletoturnthesteering
geartoleftandrighttoallowthegreaseto
penetratethewholeassembly.
NOTE:
Theupperballjointcannotbeun-
loaded,butgreaseshouldbeappliedgenerously
whileturningthesteeringandfrontwheelas-
semblyfromlefttorighttoallowthelubricant
topenetratethejoint.
CAUTION
Leadedcompoundsofmorethan10%leaded
powderinthelubricantshouldneverbeused,
alsotheballjointsshouldnotbeheatedorre-
worked.Theyshouldbereplacediffoundnot
serviceable.

Theuppercontrolarmsaremountedonremov-
ablebracketswhichareboltedtotheframe
subside-rail.Shimpacksaremountedbetween
bracketsandframeside-railtoestablishcaster
andcambersettingsforeachfrontwheel,as
showninFigure4.
Thelowercontrolarmsareassembledto
pivotshaftsandmountedtoframecrossmem-
berinreplaceablerubberbushings,asshown
inFigures5 and6.Thepivotshaftsextend
throughthecrossmemberandfromtheaxis
oflowercontrolarms.Thesteeringknuckles
areconnected,asshowninFigures7 and8,to
upperandlowerarmsthroughballjoints,
thuseliminatingthekingpins.Thisalsoelim-
inatesthekingpininclinationproceduresand
theterm"SteeringAxisInclination"willbe
usedhereafter.
