theVehicleNumber,theDateofDelivery,theSpeedometerReading
andtheBodyNumber,ifthefinish ofthecarisinvolved.Allthis
informationisveryimportantinidentifyingtheparticularcar.
•Describetheproblembriefly,andaccurately,supplyingallneeded
details.
•Donotincludeproblemsonmorethanonecarinthesameletter(un-
lesstheyareidentical).
PROPERCAREOFNEWENGINES
TheChryslerpassengercarengineisdesignedandmanufacturedtohigh
qualitystandards.Likeotherfine mechanisms,theChryslerengine,re-
quiresproper "breaking-in",servicingandmaintenance,inordertoassure
thecarownerlong-lasting,satisfactoryoperation.
Toassureproperlubricationofthemovingpartsoftheengine,a new
carshouldbedrivenatmoderatespeeds,untiltheenginehasbecome
thoroughlywarmed.Inorderforthedrivertobecome"acquainted"with
thecontrolsandactionofthecar,a newcarshouldbedrivenatmoderate
speedsduringthefirst fewhundredmiles.Urgetheownertoavoiddriving
hisvehicleatsustainedhighspeedsduringtheearlylifeofthecar.
Duringthefirst 1,000milesofoperation,theoriginalfactoryoilshould
beretainedinthecrankcase.Ifitbecomesnecessarytoaddoilduring
thebreak-inperiod,usetheproperviscosityoilaccordingtotheatmos-
pherictemperaturesasfollow:
Ifthetemperatureisnotlowerthan32°F.useSAE30,downward
to10°F.,abovezerouseSAE20-W,andaslowas10°F.,belowzero
use10-W,andlowerthan10°F.,belowzerouseSAE5-W.
STARTINGA COLDENGINE
Whenstartinga coldengine,(whethernewornot),exercisecareduring
thewarm-upperiodnottoacceleratetheengineunnecessarily.Drivethe
caratmoderatespeeds,untiltheenginereachesnormaloperatingtem-
peratures,asthiswillassureproper lubricationoftheengineparts.

Thefrontshockabsorbersaremountedwith-
inthecoilspringwiththelowerendattached
tothelowercontrolarm.Theupperendisat-
tachedtotheframewitha rubber-isolated
mounting.
Thislocationallowstheshockabsorberto
workthrougha greaterdistancewithsofter
dampeningactionforsmootherandmorecom-
pletecarcontrol.
Alsoincorporatedinthesuspensionsystem
istheswaybartomodifyspringactionfor
properrollcontrol.
Replaceablebushingsareusedinthecontrol
armsatvariouswearpoints,andshouldbe
properlycenteredtofacilitateadjustmentand
Thecaster,camber,andfrontwheeltoe-in
shouldbecheckedandreadjustedwheneverthe
controlarmsorknucklesupportsareremoved
forservicingtoassureeaseofcontrolandsta-
bilityofsteering.
NOTE
Properadjustmentofthefrontwheelbearings
hasa definitebearingoncarsafety.Improperly
adjustedfrontwheelhearings,willcausethe
vehicletowanderorshimmy,andcreateexces-
sivetirewear.
Figure1 showsthedisassembledviewofthe
frontsuspensionsystemwhenreplacingsus-
pensionparts.
SERVICEPROCEDURES
1. REMOVALANDINSTALLATIONOFTHE
FRONTSHOCKABSORBERS
a.Removal
Shockabsorberswhicharefoundtobenoisy
shouldbereplaced.Theshockabsorbersareof
the"spunover"Onflowtypeandarenotserv-
iceable.
Shoulditbecomenecessarytoremovethe
frontshockabsorbersforinstallationofnew
shockabsorbersorbushings,refertoFigure2,
andproceedasfollows:
Removedirtorgreasefromaroundtheshock
absorberuppermountingarea.Witha */£inch
openendwrenchonflats oftheshockabsorber
pistonrod,(tokeeprodfromturning),remove
nutandcupwasher.Removetwolowershock
absorbersmountingbolts,andwithdrawshock
absorberthroughopeninginbottomofspring
seat.
Toremoveuppershockabsorberbushing,
usesuitabledrifttoforcetheinnersteelsleeve
outofbushing,thenremovebushingfrom
frameopening.
Beforeinstallingnewbushing,dipbushing
insoapywater,insertinpositioninframe,us-
inga twistingmotion.Forcesteelsleevethrough
openinginbushinganddownintoposition.
Whenthebushingisproperlyinstalledthe
grooveinbushingwillindexwithframe.

Toinstalla newmountingbracketandbush-
ing,refertoFigure2 and3,andproceedas
follows:
Positionthenewmountingbracketsothat
mountingholesareata rightangletoshock
absorber.UsingToolC-3413,pressmounting
bracketintoeyeuntilcentered.
CAUTION
Alwayspressagainststeelsleevetoavoiddam-
agetotheassembly,asshowninFigure3.
b. Installation
Extendshockabsorberpistonrodtoitsfull
travel,andslidelowercupwasher(concave
sideup)overrodanddownintoposition.
Slideshockabsorberupthroughopeningin
springseatintoposition,(beingsuretheex-
tendedpistonrodenterssteelsleevethrough
upperbushing).
Installtwomountingbracketboltstolower
controlarmandtighten35foot-poundstorque.
Installcupwasher(concavesidedown)over
pistonrodanddownonbushing.Installnut,
tightento35foot-poundstorque,withupper
andlowerconcavewashersbottomagainststeel
sleeve.

Iftheupperorlowercontrolarm,orpivot
barsareseverelydamaged,a completeupperor
lowercontrolarmassemblyshouldbeinstalled.
Basically,theuppercontrolarmremainsthe
sameasthoseusedinpreviousmodels,however,
the1956armisapproximately14inchwider
andismountedtotheframewithtwoboltsin-
steadoffour.Duetothesechanges,themethod
ofcenteringpivotbarissomewhatdifferentin
thatwecannolongeruseToolC-608forlo-
catingcenter.Itcanbeusedtomaintainthe
setdimensionofuppercontrolarmwhennew
pivotbarbushingsareinstalled.
Removedirtorgreasearoundshockabsorber
uppermountingarea.Raisecarbyplacinga
jackorsupportunderlowercontrolarmand
removefrontwheelandtireassembly.
Loosenlockingscrewandremoveuppercon-
trolarmtosteeringknucklesupportpin.Re-
movepivotbartoframeattachingboltsand
removebaranduppercontrolarm.
Cleanpartsthoroughlyina suitablesolvent
andblowdrywithcompressedair.Pivotbar,
bushings,pinsealandthreadedsectionofcon-
trolarmmustbethoroughlyinspectedforwear.
Replacepartsasnecessary.

evenlyonbothends of thepivotbar.PlaceTool
C-708 onthe pivot barand expand two jaws
of the tool by tightening the expandedwedge
nutuntiljaws of thetoolarejustsnugagainst
theinside, of controlarm.
CAUTION
Makesurejaws of tool are seatingfully onin-
sideface andnot bindingagainstcontrol arm
flange.
Clamptoolandcontrolarmassembly in vise
makingsurepivotbarremainscentered.Thread
thebushingsintoeachside ofthe control arm
untilshoulder of bushingscontact the surface
ofcontrol arm. Tighten to130 foot-pounds
torque.
Removetoolandcheckoperation of pivotbar
forfreemovement(onlya moderategripshould
berequired to turnpivotbar).
NOTE
Pivotbarmay, if necessary, be rotatedoneturn
ineitherdirection to correct a slightcentering
error.

UsingToolC-736,depresstheouteredgeor
lipoftheseal,asshowninFigure5.Slidecon-
trolarmandsealontothesteeringknuckles
supportunituntilthesealfits properlyover
bushingandthepinholeisinproperalignment
withbushingandcontrolarm.
Removetool,lubricatepinandinstallcon-
trolarmpinwasherandnut,tightento100
foot-poundstorque.Positionuppercontrolarm
pivotonframe.Usea drifttolineuppivotbar
holeswithframecrossmemberholes.Installat-
tachingboltsandtightentothepropertorque.
Installfrontwheelsandtireassembly.Inspect
orreplacedamagedgreasefittings. Lowercar,
removejack,checkfrontwheelcasterandcam-
berandfrontwheel alignment.Tightensupport
armlockingscrew.
5.REMOVALOFLOWERCONTROLARMAND
FRONTCOILSPRING(FIG.6)
Thelowercontrolarmbasicallyandappearance-
wiseremainsthesame,asthepreviousmodels.
Thespringseatismountedtothelowerside
ofthecontrolarm.Thelowercontrolarmpivot
barmountingboltlocationsarechanged.For
thisreasonthemethodofcenteringthelower
pivotbarischanged.Duetolocationofthese
mountingholes,ToolC-594cannotbeusedto
maintainsetdimensionofcontrolarmwhen
installingnewpivotbarorbushings.

teredposition,startbushingsevenlyonboth
endsofpivotbarandlubricatewitha suitable
lubricant.
ModifyToolC-594byremovinglocatingstuds
(savestudsforuseonpreviousmodels)and
placeinpositiononpivotbar(openendsof
tooldown).Makingsuretoolremainsinplace,
threadbushing(onetoyourright)intocontrol
arm,untilshoulderofthebushingcontactsma-
chinedsurfaceofcontrolarm.Tightento180
foot-poundstorque.
Removetoolfromassemblyandreverseposi-
tionofassemblyinvise(topofspringseatup
withassemblyrestingonbench).
RepositioningToolC-594onpivotbarand
threadremainingbushingintocontrolarm.
Tightento180foot-poundstorque.Removetool
andassemblyfromviseandcheckpivotbar
forfreemovement.Removetool.Pivotbarmay
berotatedoneturnineitherdirectiontocor-
recta slightcenteringerror.
7.INSTALLATIONOFLOWERCONTROLARM
ANDFRONTCOILSPRING
Mountlowercontrolarmbartofrontcross-
memberandinstallcrossmembertobarbolts,
locks, washersandnuts.Tightento60foot-
poundstorque.Installknucklesupportdust
seals.
Placecoilspringonend(flatendup).Lay
uppersilencerontopofthespring..Installlow-
erspacer,(ifsoequipped)intheslowercontrol
armspringseat.Installspringanduppersilen-
cerinframecrossmember,asshowninFigure
8.Turnspringuntilitindexeswiththelower
springseatandraiselowercontrolarmtohold
itinposition.
NOTE
Usinga brightlight,lookupthroughthespring
toseeiftheupperendofthespringisinposi-
tion. Alsodetermine(byfeel)ifthelowerend
ofthespringisinposition.
Placejackunderlowercontrolarmandraise
untillowercontrolarmindexeswithsupport
arm,asshowninFigure7.Alignlowercontrol
armandsteeringknucklesupportandinstall
pin, washerandnut.Tightento100foot-pounds
torque.Installfrontshockabsorberasdescribed
inParagraph1.Installswaybar,hubanddrum
assemblyandwheel.Lowercar.
NOTE
Itisrecommendedintheeventofdamageto
upperorlowercontrolarmorreplacementof
asteeringknucklesupportarm,thatcasterand
camberbecheckedandbroughtuptospecified
limitslistedinSpecificationsoftheSteering
Section.
8.REMOVALANDINSTALLATIONOFFRONT
COILSPRING(FIGS.7 AND8)
Placejackunderlowercontrolarm,raisewheel
offfloor, andremovewheelandtireassembly.
Disconnectstabilizerlinkfromlowercontrol
armanddisconnectouterendoftherodfrom
steeringarm.Removeshockabsorber;lower
knucklesupport,pivotpinnut,lockwasher,
bushing,pinanddustseals.Supportcarframe
byanotherjack,thenslowlylowerthejack
underlowercontrolarm.Thiswillallowlower
controlarmtodroplowenoughtoremovethe
spring.
Beforeinstallationoffrontspring,check
partnumberwhichisstampedononeendof
coiltomakesurethatspringiscorrectforthe
carmodel.
Makesurethatthespringinsulatorisin
placearoundthespringcenteringflange on
frameandisingoodcondition.Placeoneend
ofspringoverthecenteringflange, andas
lowercontrolarmisraised,positionlowerend
ofspringsothatendcoilseatsinrecesspro-
videdinspringseat:Supportlowercontrolarm
ona jack.
Slipthelowerpivotpindustsealsoverouter
endsofknucklesupport.Centralizelowerend
ofknucklesupportbetweenouterendsoflower

Theswayeliminator,asshowninFigure10,
requiresnoadjustingotherthanperiodical
tighteningoffasteningbolts.
Therubberbushingsonthesprings,shock
absorbersandswayeliminatormustnotbelu-
bricatedorallowedtocomeincontactwithany
formofmineraloil.Mineralbaseoilswillcause
rapiddeteriorationofnaturalrubber.Thesway
eliminatorshaftcushionretainerclampbolt,
andclamp,shouldberemovedbeforeremoval
oflowercontrolarm.

Obtainthese"plus"figures, asthe case may
be, on bothright and leftsides ofthecarand
comparethemwitheachother. Ifthetwofig-
uresdiffer by morethan 1,4 inch,checkboth
springs for correctinstallation attopandbot-
tom. Look up into the center of eachspring to
makesurethat thetop coilcompletely sur-
rounds the pilotflange inthe framecrossmem-
ber.Alsofeelalong the bottomcoil totheend
of the coil and makesurethat it indexes cor-
rectlywith the lowestpoint ofthe springseat
ramp. Ifthetwo springs are correctlyinstalled
and yetthe "plus"figures on right and left
sides are stilldifferentfromeachother by more
than % inch,correction canbe made byuseof
spacerswhichshould be placedbetweenspring
seat and silencer attopof spring. No more
than two suchspacersshould be usedwith any
onespring. If morethan two spacers arere-
quired,replace the spring.
Wheneverfrontspringheights are changed,
either by springreplacement orby spacer in-
stallation, the frontwheelalignment ofthecar
must be rechecked.Frontspringheights may
beaffected ifthe rearspringheightvariesmore
than•%inch onone side as comparedwith the
otherside. To checkthis,measure the vertical
distancefrom topofthe rearspringmainleaf
tounderside of framasiderail on bothsides of
the car.If thesedistancesdiffermorethan<%
inch, this isan indicationthat oneofthe rear
springsshould be replaced. (It should bere-
memberedthat on currentmodels, itisper-
fectlynormal for rearsprings to showsome
reversearch,evenwith no load, so appearance
aloneshould notbe cause for rejection of
spring).
Front and rearsprings are expected to"bot-
tom" undernormalconditionsparticularlywhen
roaddips,railroadcrossings andthe like, are
encountered at highspeeds.
NOTE
Whenever the front or rearsprings are replaced
theheadlightsshouldalways be refocussed.
11. INSTALLATION OF SPRINGSEATSPACERS
Ifaftercheckingfrontspringheight, and
springs donot meet the requiredspecifications,
springseatspacersshould be installed to return
thefrontsprings to specifiedheight.Spring
spacers are available in% and% inchthick-
nessesthroughMOPAR.
Toinstallspringseatspacer,refer to Figures
12 and13,and proceed as follows:

Installtrunion plate(part of ToolC-3460) in
thelowestposition(between the coils) in coil
springthatwillpermitenagement of lift arm
(See Fig.14). Positionforkoverlift arm with

trol arm. Engageyoke on fork and install a

SERVICEDIAGNOSIS
12. FRONTENDNOISY
Acertainamount of looseness is designedinto
thethreadedbushings of frontsuspensionlink-
age to preventbinding of jointsunderdeflec-
tion.Unlesstheycausenoise or unstablesteer-
ing,thesepartsshould notbe replaced.Proper
lubrication,however, is essential. It should be
rememberedthatthreadedbushingsrequire
moreclearancethan a smooth pinand bushing
typejoint;actuallyonly the knife-edge of the
threadedpinoperates in the"V"shapedthread
cut in thebushing, as shown in Figure1.With
theweight of thecaronthebushings,theknife-
edgebearsagainst the"V" untilthere issuf-
ficient weartopermitendwisemovement of the
threadedpininthebushing.Thisconditionwill
cause no harmfuleffectexcept an increase in
noiseonroughroads.
13. TIREWEAR
Certaintypes of tirewear are caused by im-
properadjustments or condition of the vehicle
whileotherirregulartirewear is due to poor
drivinghabits or impropertireinflation.Rapid
acceleration,suddenseverebrakeapplication,
turningcorners,roundingcurves too fast, or
sharply;alongwithhighspeeddrivingwillcon-
tributetoincreasedanduneventirewear.Other
types of tireweardue to improperadjustment
of the frontsuspension or otherconditions of
thevehicle can be corrected by checking and
correctingfrontsuspensionalignment.
