LOADTHEBATTERIES
Slidethebatterycover(4)towardsthe
frontoftheflashandinsertthebatter-
iesaccordingtothediagraminsidethe
compartment.Closethecoverbyslid-
ingitfirmlybackintoplace.
Ensurethatthebatteriesarefittedprop-
erly,andremovethemwhenstoring
thegunfora longperiodoftime.The
majorityofflashfaultsarecausedby
leakingorincorrectlyfittedbatteries.
Thisflashguntakesfour1.5VAAsize
AlkalinebatteriesorNi-Cadequivalent.
Westronglyadviseagainsttheuseof
zinc-carbonbatteriesduetotheirshort
lifeandtendencytoleak.
Make sure the batteries are fitted
correctly

thegunisnew,orhasn'tbeenusedfor
awhile,firetheflashwiththetestbut-
ton(6)a coupleoftimestogetthe

HOW
TOPOSITIONTHEBOUNCE
ANDSWIVELHEAD
The700AFofferstheadvantagesofa
zoomheadwithtiltandswivelfacili-
ties.
Zoomhead.Bypre-settingthezoom
headtomatchthelensinuseyoucan
obtainevenlightcoveragewithwideangle
lensesandstillmaximisetheflashgun's
poweroutputwithlongerlenses.
Simplysetthenumberonthehead
(1)
thatmostcloselymatchesthefocallength
ofthelens.Soifit'san85mmlensor
longer,set85;standardlens,set50;
35mmlens,set35;and28mm
lens,
set28.Don'tforgettoalterthezoom
headwhenusinga zoomlens.
Note:For24mmlensessetthezoom
headto28andfitthewideangledif-
fuser.Thiswillcauseslight underex-
posurebyabout1 stop,whichisnot
noticeablewithcolourprintfilm.
Slide the on-off switch to the right
Set the zoom head to match the
focal length of the lens in use,
or its nearest equivalent. Don't
forget to alter the zoom head
when using a zoom
/ens'
Tiltand
swivel.The
700AF'sheadcanbetiltedupwardsandswivelled
sidewaystobouncethelightoffwhiteorneutralcolouredsurfaces.This
givesa muchmoreflatteringresult,preventingwashed-outhighlights
reducingharshshadowsandeliminatingred-eye.Theheadcanbe
tiltedfromOdeg(straightahead),through45,60and75degto90deg
(straightupwards).Itwillalsoswivelrightthroughto
180deg,
usefulfor
bouncingthelightoffa wall.
5.SELECTANEXPOSUREMODE
Forsimplepoint-and-shootphotography,leaveyourcamerainProgram
mode.However,theCobra700AF'sadvanceddedicationallowsyouto
chooseanyotherexposuremode
available
e.g.aperturepriority,shut-
terpriorityandmanual.Furtherdetailsforusingthisflashgunwith
specificcamerasisprovidedoverleaf.
6.FILMSPEEDSELECTOR/DISTANCESCALE(5)
Thisscalecanbeusedasa guidetomaximumshootingdistances,
especiallyusefulwhenusingthecamerainitsTTLmanualmode.The
scaleisnotelectronicallyconnectedtotheflashunitanditsusewillnot
affecttheflashoutput,whichiscompletelycontrolledbythecamera.
7.AFILLUMINATOR
The700AFhasa builtinautofocus
illuminator(12)toenablethecamera
tojudgethedistance,andadjustthe
focusofthelensinlowambientlightor
totaldarkness.Theilluminatorfiresa
redlightwhentheshutterreleasebut-
tonofthecameraispressed.Thecamera
canthenadjustthefocusofthelens
andwhencorrectwillfiretheshutter
andtheflash.Theilluminatorhasan
effectivedistanceof7 metres.Beyond
thisdistancemanualfocusshouldbe
used.
Bouncing the flash light off a

flattering result to portraits
