HOWTOUSECOBRA700AF
1. LOADTHEBATTERIES
Slidethebatterycover(4)towardsthe
frontoftheflashandinsertthebatter-
iesaccordingtothediagraminsidethe
compartment.Closethecoverbyslid-
ingitfirmlybackintoplace.
Ensurethatthebatteriesarefittedprop-
erly,andremovethemwhenstoring
thegunfora longperiodoftime.The
majorityofflashfaultsarecausedby
leakingorincorrectlyfittedbatteries.
Thisflashguntakesfour1.5VAAsize
AlkalinebatteriesorNi-Cadequivalent.
Westronglyadviseagainsttheuseof
zinc-carbonbatteriesduetotheirshort
lifeandtendencytoleak.
Make sure the batteries are fitted
correctly
2.MOUNTTHEFLASHONTHE
CAMERA'S HOT-SHOE
Firstswitchoffthegun.Thenensure
thatthe flash shoemodule (13) islocked
inplace,asmarkedontheflashgun.
Nextrotatethelocking wheel(10)up-
wardsandslidetheflashshoeintothe
camera's hot-shoeuntil it's fullyhome.
Thereshouldbenoneedtoforceit
intoplace.Rotatethelockingwheel
(10)downwardstoholdtheflashon
thecamera.
Note:WithDynaxversionslidecatch

3.SWITCHTHEFLASHON
Makesurethatthecameraisswitched
on.ThensimplyslidetheON/OFFswitch
(8)totheright.Ifthebatteriesarefresh
thegunwillchargeupinlessthan12
sec.andthereadylight(7)willglow.If
thegunisnew,orhasn'tbeenusedfor
awhile,firetheflashwiththetestbut-
ton(6)a coupleoftimestogetthe
flashworkingatfullcapacity.
Note:Theflashexposureiscontrolled
viathecamera's Though-the-lens (TTL)
and "Off-the-film" (OTF)systems.There-
foreiftheflashistestedoncamera
withouta filmortestcardloadedincor-
rectflashoperationwillresult.
4. HOW TOPOSITIONTHEBOUNCE
ANDSWIVELHEAD
The700AFofferstheadvantagesofa
zoomheadwithtiltandswivelfacili-
ties.
Zoomhead.Bypre-settingthezoom
headtomatchthelensinuseyoucan
obtainevenlightcoveragewithwideangle
lensesandstillmaximisetheflashgun's
poweroutputwithlongerlenses.
Simplysetthenumberonthehead (1)
thatmostcloselymatchesthefocallength
ofthelens.Soifit'san85mmlensor
longer,set85;standardlens,set50;
35mmlens,set35;and28mm lens,
set28.Don'tforgettoalterthezoom
headwhenusinga zoomlens.
Note:For24mmlensessetthezoom
headto28andfitthewideangledif-
fuser.Thiswillcauseslight underex-
posurebyabout1 stop,whichisnot
noticeablewithcolourprintfilm.
Slide the on-off switch to the right
Set the zoom head to match the
focal length of the lens in use,
or its nearest equivalent. Don't
forget to alter the zoom head
when using a zoom /ens'
Tiltand swivel.The 700AF'sheadcanbetiltedupwardsandswivelled
sidewaystobouncethelightoffwhiteorneutralcolouredsurfaces.This
givesa muchmoreflatteringresult,preventingwashed-outhighlights
reducingharshshadowsandeliminatingred-eye.Theheadcanbe
tiltedfromOdeg(straightahead),through45,60and75degto90deg
(straightupwards).Itwillalsoswivelrightthroughto 180deg, usefulfor
bouncingthelightoffa wall.
5.SELECTANEXPOSUREMODE
Forsimplepoint-and-shootphotography,leaveyourcamerainProgram
mode.However,theCobra700AF'sadvanceddedicationallowsyouto
chooseanyotherexposuremode available e.g.aperturepriority,shut-
terpriorityandmanual.Furtherdetailsforusingthisflashgunwith
specificcamerasisprovidedoverleaf.
6.FILMSPEEDSELECTOR/DISTANCESCALE(5)
Thisscalecanbeusedasa guidetomaximumshootingdistances,
especiallyusefulwhenusingthecamerainitsTTLmanualmode.The
scaleisnotelectronicallyconnectedtotheflashunitanditsusewillnot
affecttheflashoutput,whichiscompletelycontrolledbythecamera.
7.AFILLUMINATOR
The700AFhasa builtinautofocus
illuminator(12)toenablethecamera
tojudgethedistance,andadjustthe
focusofthelensinlowambientlightor
totaldarkness.Theilluminatorfiresa
redlightwhentheshutterreleasebut-
tonofthecameraispressed.Thecamera
canthenadjustthefocusofthelens
andwhencorrectwillfiretheshutter
andtheflash.Theilluminatorhasan
effectivedistanceof7 metres.Beyond
thisdistancemanualfocusshouldbe
used.

Program TTL (P) MODE (Point and Shoot)
Selectthe " GreenSquare " modeonyourcamera(refertocamera's
instructionbook).Thisputsthecamerainto "Point-and Shoot"mode,
andcanbeusedforgeneralflashphotographyindoorsanddaylightfill
flashoutdoors.Switchonflash:oncechargedthereadylight(7)will
glowanda flashreadysymbolwillappearinthecamera'sviewfinder.A
shuttersyncspeedwillbesetbythecamera,theexactspeedwill
dependontheamountofambientlightpresent,usuallythe maxi-

mumsyncforyourparticularcamerawillonlybesetinbright outdoi

on.Thecamerawillselecta shutterspeedbetween30secondsandtht

NOTE:Ifa smallapertureisselectedinlowlightconditions,the earner;
willseta slowshutterspeed.Inthiscaseeitherseta largerapertureo
ensurethatyourcameraismountedona sturdytripodtoavoid earner*
shake.Ifthemaximumsyncspeedintheviewfinderblinksseta smalle1
aperturetoavoidover-exposure.
SHUTTER PRIORITY TTL (TV) MODE
LikeAV,TVmodereadsambientlightandadjuststheapertureaccord-
ingly.Inlowlightconditionsthecamerawillselecta wideaperture- or
theaperturevaluemayblinkindicatingthatthereisnotenoughlightfor
acorrectlyexposedpicture.Theonlymethodofcorrectionistoselecta
slowershutterspeed.
Thismodeallowsyoutoincreasethebackgroundexposureforbetter
backgrounddetailandalsocreatesa morenaturallightingbalance
betweenthesubjectandthebackground.Switchcameraonandselect
TVmode(refertocamera'sinstructionbook).Selectdesiredshutter
speedfromthemaximumsyncto30secondsviathecamerasinputdial
andswitchflashon.Iftheminimumaperturecanbeseenblinkinginthe
viewfinderselecta fastershutterspeed.Ifthemaximumapertureblinks
selecta slowerone.
MANUAL TTL (M) MODE

withthesesimplyselectthecommandorbar-codedesired,switchthe
flashonandproceed,referingtoyourcamera'sinstructionbookand

FlashphotographyisnotpossiblewiththeDEPmodeofferedbysome
EOSmodels.

Switchcameraonandselectprogram(P)mode(refertocamera's
instructionbook).Thisputsthecamera .into a "Point-and-Shoot"mode
andcanbeusedforgeneralflashphotography.Switchflashon,once
chargeda flashsymbolwillappearintheviewfinderandtheflashready
light(7)willglow.A shuttersyncspeedandaperturewillbeautomati-
callysetbythecamera.Theexactsyncspeedsetwilldependonthe
amountofavailableambientlightandthelengthoflensinuse.Usually
themaximumsyncforyourparticularcamerawillonlybesetinbright
conditions.

increasethebackgroundexposureforbetterbackgrounddetailand
alsocreatesa morenaturallightingbalancebetweenthesubjectand
thebackground.Slow-shuttersynccanbeusedinprogram(P)mode
withalltheabovecameras.Forothermodesconsultyourcamera's
instructionbook.
SelectProgramordesiredmodeavailableonyourcameraandswitch
flashon.Theabovecameraswillhaveeithera SPOTbuttonoranAEL
buttonlocatedtotherightoftheviewfinder.Whentheflashhascharged
asyncspeedandaperturewillbesetbythecamera.Thepressingof
theSPOT/AELbuttonwillcausethecameratoseta slowerspeed(up
toslowestspeedofparticularmodel).Usea sturdytripodwithslower
speedstoavoidthedangerofcamerashake.
NOTE:The700AFcanbeusedinconjunctionwithcertainCreative
ExpansionCards(availableforsomeDynaxmodels).Simplymountthe
flashandswitchiton.Thecamerawillselecta shutterspeedand
apertureaccordingtotheparticularcardbeingused.Ifindoubtreferto

instructionbook).Initiallya shuttersyncspeedandaperturecombina-
tionwillbesetbycamera.Ifdesiredthiscanbechangedbyusingthe
TVandAVinputdialsonthefrontandrearofthecamera.
Note:a safetyshiftfeatureontheZ-1willnotallowincorrectshutter
speed /aperture combinationstobeset.Ifthishappensan " S " will

synctotheslowestspeedofparticularmodel.Thecamerawillselect
anappropriateaperture.

Note:Whenthe700AFflashfiresinthismodetheautocheckindicator
(9)willilluminate,thisshowsthattheflashhascorrectlyexposedthe
subjectasindicatedbyreflectedlight.Itisnot,however,anindication
oftheover-allexposure,thiswilldependontheamountoftimethatthe
shutterremainsopenandthereciprocityofthefilminuse.Sometrial
anderrormayberequired.
AF ILLUMINATION WITH 700AF Z-SERIES VERSION
A)The700AF'silluminator (12 ) willonlyoperatewiththeZ-10(and
onlywhenanFA-AF " Power-Zoom " lensisfitted).
B)TheZ-1willonlyoperateitsownAFspotbeamwhichislocatednext
totheRTF.WhenAFilluminationisrequiredsimplyengagetheRTF,
focusasnormal,thenretracttheRTF.IftheRTFisleftinthe 'up'
positionthereisa possibilitythatitwillfirealongwiththe700AF.
C)Lowlightilluminationisnotpossiblewiththe700AFandZ-20,
regardlessoflenstypeinuse.
D)Whenusingthe700AFandPro-Gripwithanymodelotherthanthe
Z-10,batteriesneednotbeusedinthegrip.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
DuetocircuitboarddifferencesbetweentheSFandZ series700AF
Pentaxguns,thetwoarenot interchangeable, i.e.anSFseries700AF
cannotbeusedona Z seriescamera,andviceversa.

ontothefrontofthezoomhead.
Notethatthecolouredfilterswillreducetheflashgun'slightoutput
byabouttwostops,andthewideanglediffuserbyaboutonestop.
WARNING: Your 700AFflashgun is dedicated toone brand
ofcameraonly.Dedicationcannotbechangedbysimplychanging
theremovablemodule(13).The flashgun's dedicatedcircuitryis
housedinthebodyofthegunnotthemodule.Themoduleis
removableonlytoallowusewiththeoptionalPro-GripAFoutfit.
Seriousdamagecouldresulttobothflashandcameraifthiswarning
isnotadheredto.
