3.0 ImportantPrecautions
Observethefollowingsafetyprecautionstoensureusersafetyandmaximizingtheoperatinglife
ofthepreamplifier.
• Useonlythepoweradaptersuppliedwiththepreamplifier.
• Exercisecautionwhenhandlingthepreamplifierbecauseitissensitiveelectrostatic
discharge.
• Avoidusingthepreamplifierinenvironmentswithexcessiveheatormoisture.
Therearenootheruserserviceablepartsinsidetheunit.Donotremovethemaininstrument
cover.IfthepreamplifierneedsrepairpleasecontactauthorizedCom‐Powerservicecenter.
3.1ExcessiveRFinput
DonotexceedRFinputlevelindicatedonfrontpanel.ExcessiveRFinputmaydamagethe
preamplifier’ssensitiveinputandwillnotbecoveredunderwarranty.
3.2 Saturation
Inadditionpossibledamagetothepreamplifierinput,excessiveRFsignalsmaycausethe
preamplifiertosaturate.Whenapreamplifierreachessaturationpointthegainwillreduce
andcauseanonlinearincreaseinoutputpowerresultinginaccuratemeasurements.PAP‐501
canhandleupto+10dBm(117dBµV)inputsignal.
3.3Calibration
ThefactoryrecommendedcalibrationperiodforthePreamplifieris12months.However,its
performanceshouldbecheckedperiodicallytoensurethepreamplifierisoperatingwithinthe
ratedspecificationgiveninsection2.0ofthismanual.

4.0 Warranty
Com‐PowerwarrantstoitsCustomersthattheproductsitmanufactureswillbefreefrom
defectsinmaterialsandworkmanshipforaperiodof3years.Thiswarrantyshallnotapplyto:
• Transportdamagesduringshipmentfromyourplant.
• Damagesduetopoorpackaging.
• Productsoperatedoutsidetheirspecifications.
• ProductsImproperlymaintainedormodified.
• Consumableitemssuchasfuses,powercords,cables,etc.
• Normalwear
• Calibration
• ProductsshippedoutsidetheUnitedStateswithoutthepriorknowlegeofCom‐
Power.
Inaddition,Com‐Powershallnotbeobligedtoprovideserviceunderthiswarrantytorepair
damageresultingfromattemptstoinstall,repair,serviceormodifytheinstrumentby
personnelotherthanCom‐Powerservicerepresentatives.
UndernocircumstancesdoesCom‐Powerrecognizeorassumeliabilityforanyloss,damage
orexpensearising,eitherdirectlyorindirectly,fromtheuseorhandlingofthisproduct,or
anyinabilitytousethisproductseperatelyorincombinationwithanyotherequipment.
Whenrequestingwarranty,calibrationorrepairservices,itisrecommendedthattheoriginal
packagingmaterialbeusedforshipping.Damageduetoimproperpackagingwillvoid
warranty.
Inthecaseofrepairorcomplaint,alabelshouldbeattachedtothehousingofthe
instrumentwhichdescribesbrieflythefaultsobserved.Pleaseincludethename,telephone

4.1Maintenance
Thisproductcontainsnouserreplaceableparts.Iftheunitdoesnotoperateorneeds
calibration,pleasecontactCom‐PowerCorporation.Anymodificationsorrepairsperformed
ontheunitbyanyoneotherthananauthorizedfactorytrainedtechnicianwillvoidwarranty.
Theexteriorsurfacemaybecleanedwithmilddetergentandthenbewipedwithadry,clean,
lint‐freecloth.Usecaretoavoidanyliquidsorforeignobjectsenteringthechassis.

Com‐PowerPAP‐501PreampliferaredesignedspecificallyforEMIradiatedemissionstesting
upto1GHz.
ThePAP‐501highgainofthepreamplifier
• Amplifiessignalswithinitsoperationalfrequencybandtoimprovetheoverall
signalnoiseratioofthemeasurementsystem.
• Compensatesforsignallossesassociatedwiththeuseofcablesandantennas
operatingwithinitsfrequencyrange.
• Duetoitsverysmallsizeprovidesanexcellentmeanstoincreasesensitivityof
nearfieldprobes.

5.4TroubleshootingCommonproblems
Problem:Gainislowornogain.
A:MakesurethepoweradapterispluggedinandthegreenisLEDislit.
Checkiftheinputandoutputcablesareconnectedsecurely.Wigglebothcablesandverifyifthe
signallevelchangesonthereceiver.Ifthesignalchangesreplacethedefectivecableandcheck
again.Makesurethecablefromthesignalsourceisconnectedtotheinputnottheoutput.
VerifyifthesignalsourceconnectedandRFisturnedon.Ifthesignalsourceisanantennaor
nearfieldprobesmakesuretheyareproperlyconnected.
Injectaknownsignallevelintothepreamplifierandcheckthegain.Forexampleifyouinject50
dBµV,youshouldread~71to73dBµVonthereceiver.Pleasebecautiousnottoexceedthe
inputlimitsgiveninspecificationtableofthismanual.
