Quick Start Guide
The Intercom Server GE 800 has been designed to meet the internal communication demands of large
companies and organisations. Different functions of modern internal communication such as intercom,
information and control can be integrated into a single system. By means of different subscriber cards
with different feature levels and additional interfaces the central can be adapted to the individual needs
with ease.
This manual describes mounting of the hardware and start-up of the Intercom Server, Subscriber In-
terfaces and Input/Output cards. Information about the interface cards and Intercom Terminals can be
found in the respective Manuals of the products.
The following steps are required for Start-up:

2. Additional Components
General
Additionally to the Intercom Server for Start up of the system the following components are required:
1. Subscriber Cards
Subscriber cards handle the speech communication as well as subscriber specific functions. For
connection of IP-, Digital- and Analogue subscribers various cards in 4 feature level (B, C, D and P)
are available. The cards of the higher levels contain all the features of the lower ones plus additio-
nal features. With feature level P individual feature levels can be advised to each subscriber.
2. VoIP-Cards
Due to the support of wide spread standards such as the SIP or IAX protocol various VoIP telepho-
nes or entire VoIP telephone systems can be connected to the Intercom system as subscribers with
VoIP cards.
3. Input / Output Cards
Input / output cards are used for the reading in of floating contacts and / or operating of controls
such as door openers or barriers via floating relay contacts (depending on type
controls such as door openers or barriers via floating relay contacts (depending on type).

GE 800 4. Cabling
1.1/1209 15
Connection of multiple Intercom Servers GE 800
The G8-NET Card
Multiple GE 800 Servers are connected via the Uplink and Downlink ports of the G8-NET card
For the G8-NET card no special configuration is necessary
A special “Discovery protocol” is used to localize the other GE 800 servers in the local network
Connection possibilities
VLAN
If the GE 800 Intercom Servers are connected via a switch, the switch must be VLAN capable.
The following VLAN-IDs must be allowed: 1, 254 and 255
Depending on the type of the switch these IDs must be configured
Switches with Autonegotiation
If both the Intercom Server and the switch are configured to “Autonegotiation” in certain cases the con-
nection can not be built-up.
The solution for this is a fixed configuration, e.g. “100 MBit / full duplex” (see ”Configuration of IP-Net-
work Settings” on page 21)
Attention: For this purpose the following IP address range is reserved!
231.255.x.233 to 231.255.x.239 x...Intercom Server-ID
with switch without switch
If more than 20 servers shall be connected a switch is
required (max. 105 GE 800).
Up to 20 GE 800 can be directly connected in series via the
G8-NET card (no switch required).
Advantages: - No restrictions for IP-Subscriber cards
- Redundant connections possible (see page 16)
- No additional costs
Disadvantages: - Increased cost / power consumption - When one GE 800 in the chain fails the rest of the chain
is disconnected as well
Restrictions: - Up to max. 105 GE 800 in LAN - Up to max. 20 GE 800
- No GE 800 fully equipped with IP-subscriber cards

4. Cabling GE 800
16 1.1/1209
Network Redundancy
It is possible to connect a network redundancy via a second cable from the second ethernet port of the
G8-NET. If one cable to the switch is defect, the second connection automatically takes over.
Note: For network redundancy the switch must support Rapid Spanning Tree RSTP functionality!
Required Bandwidth in the Network
The connection of GE 800 Intercom Servers creates a load on the IP network with the speech and con-
nection data. These must be regarded when planning the system together with the network admini-
strator.
One 16 kHz conversation requires 146 kBit/s
The advisable load of a 100 Mbit/s network = 40 Mbit/s
Therefore 40 Mbit/s can be transmitted in the network
This bandwidth minus the bandwidth already used in the network is available for the Intercom
system
Always plan a reserve!
Example
40 Mbit/s = 270 conversations between two segments when no other load is on the network

Networking with existing systems
The GE 800 Intercom Server is connected to the GE 700 via the two GEV-Ports on the G8A-NET instal-
lation board of the G8-NET Card.

4. Cabling GE 800
18 1.1/1209
Limitations in Mixed Systems
Limitations at GE 800
Must be inserted in the top-most GEV-ring
Can only be connected to Ring 1 of a GE700, no connection to Ring 2!
If the GE 800 is switched off the GEV-ring does not work -> no relay on G8-NET
Only one GEV connection of a GE 800 system to a GE 700!
Limitations at GE 700
GE 700 network cards must be upgraded to software version min. 5.2
Limitations with synchronous connections
Works like “Ring 2”: GE 800 always is “Clock Master”
If CNET-W or CNET-E1 networking is used in the GE 700 system, the Servers GE 800 may only be
connected on one side of the network!
Otherwise non-synchronous connections must be used (LAN, WAN, S0).
When G8-CNET-W or G8-CNET-E1 are connected to the GEV ring a connection to a GE 700 is not pos-
sible

GE 800 5. CCT-Configuration

5. CCT-Configuration
Configuration via IP or RS 232
Configuration of GE 800 Intercom Servers can be carried out via a RS 232 or standard network cable.
For configuration of features see manual “PRO 800”.
IP (Ethernet)
Connect the PC for configuration with a network cable directly to the Intercom Server (ethernet port
on the installation board G8A-NET) or with a switch in the network.
In a network the Intercom Server and the PC must be in the same subnet.
The Intercom Server is automatically advised an IP-address during initialisation (see ”Configuration
of IP-Network Settings” on page 21)
RS232
For configuration via RS 232 a 9-way D-Submin extension cable (1:1, Plug: Server-side, socket PC-side)
is required.
This cable is connected to the 9-way D-Submin socket on the G8-GEN or the installation board
G8A-GEN.
NC = not connected
This cable can be purchased at an electric outfitter or ordered under the type ”X-KAB-CCT”.
Networking of housings
With networking cards G8-NET up to 105 housings can be networked to a local system, in which all
features of the GE 800 are available.
Additionally multiple locations can be networked via further network cards (G8-LAN, G8-S0,
G8-CNET-E1, ...).
The description of the individual network cards can be found in the respective manuals. Below only
networking via the G8-NET card is described.
One networking card G8-NET, one installation board G8A-NET and one 1 m connection cable ASK
KAT5/1 are included in the extent of supply of the basic housing GE 800.

5. CCT-Configuration GE 800
20 1.1/1209
Start-up of a Networked System
In networked systems each Server housing must be advised a unique number (Server-ID). There are
two methods of advising each Intercom Server a Server-ID:
For a maximum of 14 housings the Server-IDs can be set via the DIP-switches of the G8-GEP. This is
the easiest method, because the PC does not need to be connected to each single housing.
The numbers can also be set with the program CCT, e.g. for more than 14 housings or if the program-
ming should be prepared in advance for a central.
Attention: The standard calling numbers, that are automatically allocated to the housings (see ”Stan-
dard Call Numbers” on page 47), must be changed by programming if more than 9 housings are con-
nected. Otherwise three- and four-digit numbers beginning with the same digits would occur (e.g. 110
in housing no. 1 and 1101 in housing no. 11).
Setting the numbers with DIP-switches
1. Initialize each housing with the desired number (1 to 14):
Set the DIP-switches 1 to 4 of the G8-GEP to “ON“.
Switch the Intercom Server off and back on.
Set the desired number (switch position see below).
Switch the Intercom Server off and back on.
2. Connect all housings. If all Server-IDs are set correctly the status LEDs of the G8-NET must signal
faultless operation (siehe Seite 52).
Attention: Initialising the Intercom Server resets the programming.
3. Connect the PC to any housing and read out the configuration of the Intercom Server with the
program CCT (Menu Intercom Server > Receive). Now all cards are recognised correctly and the
central can be configured as usual. For configuration the PC can be connected to any housing, all
housings are configured like a single housing.

with the same digits would occur (e.g. 110 in housing no. 1 and 1101 in housing no. 11).
- At full expansion with IP-Subscribers (14 cards with 8 subscribers per card = 112 per housing) collisions
may already occur at the second housing (see ”Standard Call Numbers” on page 47)
