Compaq NC3132
Fast Ethernet Module
OVERVIEW
The Compaq NC3132 Fast Ethernet Module provides two additional 10/100Base-TX ports for the NC3131 Fast
Ethernet NIC. The upgrade module provides a scalable transition path from Ethernet to Fast Ethernet to Bonded Fast
Ethernet.
The NC3132 contributes additional redundancy and bandwidth to the server without having to change the NIC or the
operating system driver.
EASE OF USE
Plug and Play
The NC3132 plugs into the NC3131 Fast Ethernet NIC without requiring any tools. Fully compliant with the 2.1 PCI
specification, the NC3132 upgrademodule automatically configures its I/O address and interrupt settings for easy
installation.
Extensive Driver Support
The NC3132 uses the same operating system drivers as the NC3131 and no driver change is required when moving
from 10 to 100 Mbps. In addition, these same drivers can be used for all Compaq Intel-based 10 or 100 Mbps NICs.
Common drivers provide consistency, easy management, and support to save money and time.
Auto-negotiation
The NC3132 senses for 10 or 100 Mbps and half or full duplex and automatically configures to the highest network
connection speed between the NIC and hub or switch port.
PERFORMANCE
64-Bit Bus
The NC3132 uses the NC3131 base card connector which is a 32/64-bit PCI Universal Connector for operation in 32-
or 64-bit PCI slots.
Port Bonding
The NC3132 supports Adaptive Load Balancing (ALB) and Cisco’s Fast EtherChannel (FEC). ALB provides both
failover support and balances transmit traffic across NICs for increased performance. For even higher performance,
Cisco’s Fast EtherChannel provides port failover and balances transmit and receive traffic across NICs.
Bus-mastering
The NC3132 uses bus-mastering technology to maximize throughput and minimize CPU utilization.
SECURITY/RELIABILITY
Network Fault Tolerance (NFT)
This feature enables the NIC to keep an active link if a switch or hub link fails, by automatically switching to a backup
NIC.
PCI Hot Plug
The NC3132 includes PCI Hot Plug support that enables PCI networking controllers to be replaced or added to a
server without powering down the system. This feature provides increased system availability and non-stop
serviceability in business-critical computing environments.

NETWORK MANAGEMENT
Standards-based
The NC3132 supports the following industry network management standards to work with a broad spectrum of
software utilities.

Server Integration
Compaq’s SmartStart configuration utility includes setup support for the NC3132 so that it can be configured as part
of the SmartStart configuration process in Compaq servers. Compaq Insight Manager can recognize the NC3132
individually or in port bonded teams, and can collect and report SNMP statistics on NIC events. The Compaq Network
Management System (CNMS) can also collect and report SNMP statistics on the NC3132.
Integrated Management Log (IML) support is provided by the NC3132 for critical event logging on Compaq servers.
CPQSET+
The CPQSET+ enhanced installation utility supports the NC3132 to allow the user to run initial diagnostics and
configure NIC teams for ALB or other high-availability options.
Diagnostic LEDs
For each port, LEDs show link integrity, network speed, and network activity at a glance for easy troubleshooting.
