INSTALLATION AND SETUP GUIDE 13
IPAQ NETWORKING 11 MBPS WIRELESS PC CARD
Field Function
State This field displays the state of your Wireless PC Card.
Associated is the default value, indicating that your
Wireless PC Card is connected to another wireless adapter,
access point, or wireless gateway. The number shown
after Associated is the MAC address of the Wireless PC
Card or access point.
Scanning means the node is searching for an available
access point and trying to detect the SSID of an access
point within range.
Note: This field displays an error message if the driver fails
to initialize. Click Rescan to search for a connection. When
set to infrastructure mode, the Wireless PC Card will scan
continuously until it finds one or more access points with a
matching SSID. Then it will attempt to authenticate and
associate with the access point.
When the Wireless PC Card is set to peer-to-peer mode, it
scans five seconds for a peer-to-peer network using the
same SSID. If it does not locate one, it starts its own
peer-to-peer network.
Current
Channel and
Current Tx
Rate
These two fields display the channel and transmit rate that
are being used by your Wireless PC Card.
Throughput These two fields display the wireless receive (Rx) and
transmit (Tx) throughput rates in bytes per second. These
values update every two seconds.
Link Quality This bar graph is active when the node is in infrastructure
mode. It displays the quality of the link between the node
and its access point. The label above the bar graph
summarizes the quality of the link as Not Applicable, Poor,
Fair, Good, or Excellent. If the link quality is poor, your
Wireless PC Card will search for a better access point.
Note: If you are using peer-to-peer mode, no bar graph is
displayed.
Signal
Strength This bar graph is active when the node is in infrastructure
mode. It displays normalized signal strength as reported by
the radio. The strength is averaged among all frames that
are more than 100 bytes long received from the access
point.
Note: If you are using peer-to-peer mode, no bar graph is
displayed.

Field Function
Mode The field displays the network mode. The default setting is
infrastructure
. You can change the mode by selecting
peer-to-peer
from the drop-down pick list.
Infrastructure requires the presence of an 802.11b
access point. All communication is done when the access
point relays packets to other wireless clients as well as to
nodes on a wired network.
Peer-to-peer is the 802.11b peer-to-peer mode of
operation. Communication flows from client to client
without using an access point.
SSID The SSID has
ANY
as the initial setting after the drivers are
loaded. The SSID must be the same for all PCs on your
wireless network.
Note: To better secure your network, it is highly
recommended that you change the default
ANY
SSID to a
different one of your choosing. This name must be the
same for all of your wireless network devices.
Tx Rate The default transmission rate is
fully automatic
.
The setting has options for 1 Mbps, 2 Mbps, Auto 1 or 2
Mbps, 5.5 Mbps, and 11 Mbps. For most applications, it is
recommended to leave the setting at fully automatic.
PS (Pseudo
Set) Mode The default is
disabled
.
If mode (see above) is set to peer-to-peer, the PS mode
should be changed to
enable
.
Channel The channel is set automatically when you select
infrastructure mode. When you select peer-to-peer mode,
the scrolling pick list is enabled, and you can select the
channel.

Field Function
Encryption
(WEP) The default is
disabled
. You can enable encryption by
selecting
64-bit
or
128-bit
from the drop-down pick list.
64-bit encryption is the standard encryption for your
Wireless PC Card. As many as four encryption keys can
be set for 64-bit encryption.
128-bit encryption is the highest form of encryption for
your Wireless PC Card. A single encryption key is used.
Passphrase The passphrase method is recommended because it is
the fastest, easiestway to generate WEP keys. A
passphrase can be any text string of 31 alphanumeric
characters.
This option becomes available when encryption is
enabled. You can click the radio button to select or
deselect the passphrase option.
Manual Entry
(Key 1 - Key 4) These four fields (or one field, if you’re using 128-bit
encryption) can be used to manually enter the
encryption keys.Thismaybenecessaryifyouwantyour
node to match keys in another vendor’s product. These
fields also display the keys generated by a passphrase.
Each key must consist of hex digits (numbers 0-9 or
letters A-F).
You can click the radio buttonto select or deselect the
manual entry option. The key entry fields are available
when the manual entry option is selected.
Note: The configuration utility will not apply keys that
are not entered correctly.
Default Tx Key This button updates your Wireless PC Card with the four
keys entered in Key 1 through Key 4. When you click
Apply, the keys are updated.
Note:The Default Tx Key is not anavailable option when
you select 128-bit encryption.
