Overview
This guide is designed to help you become familiar with the basic functionality of EZ Antivirus
version 7. This guide is not intended to replace any of the official EZ Antivirus documentation
which is available from our web site, or from within the product help. For more information

Installation
Please close all other Windows programs before installation as they may interfere with the
installation process. If you already have another antivirus product loaded you must disable its
real-time protection (background checking) before installation.
If you are not currently connected to the Internet, it is recommended that you do so at this time in
order to complete the installation. If you start the installation without a connection established, EZ
Antivirus will prompt you to connect during the installation.
•Double-click on the EZ Antivirus installation file you have downloaded, or insert the
installation CD into your computer. The installation wizard will start.
•The License Agreement will be displayed. Select I Agree to continue if you agree with the
license conditions.
•The Product License Key screen will appear. Enter your license key in the field provided,
then click the Next> button.

•The Installation Location screen will appear. This screen will display the default
installation folder in which EZ Antivirus will be installed to. If you wish to change the
installation folder, enter the required folder in the field provided, or select the Browse
button to choose a folder. Click the Next> button to begin installation to the chosen folder.
•The setup program will begin to install files. During this time, EZ Antivirus will connect to
the my-eTrust.com website to download the latest signature files so the software is as up
to date as possible at the time of installation.
•Once the download and installation have completed, the EZ Antivirus program window
will open and an initial scan will automatically take place.
•When the scan has completed, you will be asked to restart your computer so that EZ

Antivirus’ real-time protection can be loaded for the first time. Click the OK button to re-
start.
•The EZ Antivirus installation is now complete.
The EZ Antivirus Program Window
The interface, or program window, is divided into: the selection tabs, located on the top of the
window, the buttons, located within the tab selected, and the Antivirus Protection Status, which is
displayed in all tabs at the bottom of the window.

Popup Help
‘Popup’ context sensitive help on all aspects of the various program windows can be obtained by
clicking on the ?symbol in the top right hand side of the dialog (when available), then clicking on
the field or item you wish to learn more about.

The Selection Tabs
The selection tabs are used to view the various components of EZ Antivirus. A set of buttons will
be displayed relating to the tab you select by clicking on each tab. The tabs are grouped from left
to right in the following order:
The Virus Scanning Tab
The Virus Scanning tab allows you to start a scan of the entire computer, or choose certain files
and folders to scan. It also lets you set up a scheduled scan, and configure your scanning
options. The Virus Scanning Tab Window contains the following buttons:
•Scan My Computer
•Schedule a Scan
•Selective Scanning
•Scan Settings
The functions of all buttons will be described later in this guide.
The Update Tab
The Update tab allows you to perform a virus update, schedule a time to run automatic updates,
and choose your proxy server settings. The Update Tab Window contains the following buttons:
•Update Antivirus
•Schedule Update
•Proxy Settings

The Tools Tab
The Tools tab allows you to view and perform actions on quarantined items, view log files and
create and send a system report to my-eTrust Customer Support. The Tools Tab Window
contains the following buttons:
•Quarantined Items
•Log Viewer
•System Report
The Help Tab
The Help tab allows you to view version information , check your expiry date and view the product
help. It also provides web links to the following online resources:

The Buttons
Different buttons are located in each tab window. The buttons provide access to the main
functionality of the product, and allow you to make changes to the product’s configuration. Each
button, when clicked, opens a new program window.
Listed below is a brief description for each button, located underneath its relevant tab:
Scan My Computer
When clicked, this button will start scanning all boot sectors, files and folders contained on your
computer. This includes hard drives, removable media such as ZIP drive, floppy drives, and any
mapped network drives.
Schedule a Scan
When this button is clicked, the Scheduled Scan dialog box will appear. Scheduling a scan can
be an effective way of scanning the contents of your computer at a time when you are not using
it. This can be useful if your computer contains many files and folders.
Selective Scanning
When the Selective Scanning button is clicked, a dialog box will appear in the form of an Explorer
window (browse window). This dialog box will allow you to choose files and folders to scan. Once
selected, click the Scan button to start scanning your selection.

Scan Settings
When you click on the Scan Settings button, a dialog box will appear containing all the options for
configuring your virus scanning.
Update Antivirus
When you click the Update Antivirus button, EZ Antivirus will automatically connect to the
download web site, and proceed to download a Virus Update. If you use a modem to connect to
the Internet, you may be asked to establish your connection at this time. If your antivirus software
is up to date at the time you press this button, a simple message will be displayed stating this.
Schedule Update
EZ Antivirus is programmed to automatically perform updates on a regular basis. When you click
the Schedule Update button, a dialog box will appear containing all the options for customizing
your automatic updates.
Proxy Settings
Certain users may require a proxy server to make a connection to the Internet. When the Proxy
Settings button is clicked, a dialog box displaying all the options for configuring your proxy server
is displayed.
Quarantined Items
When you click the Quarantined Items button, a dialog box containing a list of infected items
which have been quarantined is displayed. Within this window, you have the option to review the
infected item, restore and clean it, or simply remove it.
Log Viewer
When the Log Viewer button is clicked, a dialog box is displayed containing log information. A
drop down list is presented allowing you to choose the log file you wish to view.

System Report
When the System Report button is clicked, an application will start allowing you to send a report
about your computer to my-eTrust Customer Support. This feature should only be used if you are
experiencing a problem with the software, and Customer Support have requested your report.
Antivirus Protection Status
When running EZ Antivirus, you will notice at all times, either a tick, cross, clock or exclamation
mark at the bottom of the main program window. This indicates the various states of your
antivirus protection (real-time protection, email protection and updated protection).
Next to the tick, cross, clock or exclamation mark, there is a ’Details’ button. When you click this
button, more information about the protection status is displayed. A window will appear showing
further information about the antivirus component.
Real-time protection status:
•A tick indicates that the real-time file monitoring is enabled and running. All files will be
will be scanned when accessed.
•An exclamation mark indicates that the real-time protection is disabled.
•A cross indicates the real-time protection is not loaded.
•A clock icon indicates that the protection is currently in Snooze mode.
Email protection status:
•A tick indicates that the email monitor is enabled. All emails will be scanned prior to
arriving in your inbox.
•An exclamation mark indicates that the email monitor is disabled.
•A cross indicates the email protection is not loaded.
•A clock icon indicates that the protection is currently in Snooze mode.
Virus Signature Update:
•A tick indicates that the Virus Update that is currently installed is recent, and has been
installed successfully. The version and date of the update last installed will be displayed.
•An exclamation mark indicates that your protection is becoming out of date.
•A cross indicates that the Virus Update that is currently installed is out of date, and needs
to be updated immediately. It may also indicate that the signature update is not present.

On-demand Scanning
EZ Antivirus functions in three main ways to detect viruses. These are:
Real-time scanning, email scanning, and on-demand scanning. On-demand scanning occurs in a
variety of ways:
•When you open EZ Antivirus and click the Scan My Computer button, from the Virus
Scanning tab.
•When you select the Selective Scanning button from the Virus Scanning tab, then choose
a file, folder or drive to be scanned.
•When you right-click on a file, and select eTrust EZ Antivirus from the right-click menu.
•When you click the Schedule a Scan button from the Virus Scanning tab, and schedule a
dedicated time to perform an on-demand scan.
These occurrences of on-demand scanning will be described in detail below.
The simplest and most direct way to start scanning your computer is to click the Scan My
Computer button from the Virus Scanning tab. This action immediately displays the Scan dialog
box. EZ Antivirus proceeds to scan all items on your computer. An animated icon on the left
indicates the scan is in progress. All scanning is logged in a separate log file.

What Gets Scanned?
The following items are scanned when you initiate a scan using the Scan My Computer button:
•Hard disk boot sectors.
•Floppy disk boot sectors (if connected).
•All hard disks - includes all files and folders on your hard disk/s.
•All removable media - includes floppy’s, ZIP disks, CDs, DVDs, memory sticks and other
media connected to your computer and recognized by Windows.
•System items including registry, and system files.

Detections
If a virus is detected when performing an on-demand scan, the infection will be displayed in the
scan results table (see below). All scans performed by the on-demand scanner are also logged.
The scan results include three pieces of information:
•File Name - displays the path and name of the file determined to be infected (long paths
may need the separator bar adjusted).
•Virus Name - displays the name of the virus found. This text will be in the form of a
hyperlink. If you are connected to the Internet, and click the virus name, your browser will
load and specific virus information will be displayed (if available).
•Status - the status will be displayed. The status of the infection includes infected,
removed quarantined, cleaned and corrupt.

Schedule a Scan
EZ Antivirus allows you to set a time to perform an automatic scan on a regular basis - the
scheduled scan. Scheduling a scan can be very useful if you wish to scan your computer
regularly, but do not wish to wait at the computer until the scan finishes. To enable and configure
the scheduled scan, click the Schedule a Scan button located on the Virus Scanning tab.
Schedule Scan Settings
The Schedule Scan Settings dialog box allows you to enable and configure the scheduled scan.

The following options are included in the Schedule Scan Settings dialog box:
Do not run any scheduled scans
This option is selected by default. When selected, no scheduled scan will take place.
Run a scheduled scan of all files and folders
If you enable this option, the scheduled scan will be enabled. Use the fields below this to
configure the time and repeat interval for your scheduled scan.
Start Time
Click in the field to manually enter a date (dd/mm/yyyy format), or use the dropdown list to display
a calendar to choose the date to commence the scheduled scan. The time can also be adjusted
manually, by clicking in the time field, or be adjusted with the up or down arrows provided.
Repeat Interval
Choose the amount of days and/or hours to wait between scheduled scans. Use the drop-down
arrows, or click in the field to manually enter the days and hours.

Selective Scanning
The on-demand scan can be ran easily, on all files and folders by using the Scan My Computer
feature described above. If however, you wish to select certain files and folders to be scanned
individually, you can use the Selective Scanning feature.
Scan Files or Folders
To access selective scanning, click the Selective Scanning button located on the Virus Scanning
tab. This will display the Scan Files and Folders dialog box. This window displays all items
located on the various drives and folders stored on your computer. The following scanning tasks
can be achieved from this dialog box:
Scan an individual file: Use the + symbol or double-click the drive or folder that the file is
located in (on the right-hand side of the window). Click the file you wish to scan (located on the
left-hand side of the window). Click the Scan button.
Scan a group of files in the same folder: Use the + symbol or double-click the drive or folder
that the files are located in. Hold the Ctrl button down while selecting the files to be scanned.
Once selected, release the Ctrl button. Click the Scan button.
Scan a group of files and/or folders: Use the + symbol or double-click the drive or folder that
the files and/or folders are located in. Hold the Ctrl button down while selecting the files and/or
folders to be scanned. Once selected, release the Ctrl button. Click the Scan button.
Scan a whole drive: Highlight the drive you wish to scan (located on the right-hand side of the
window). Click the Scan button.
Scan the entire computer: Highlight the My Computer item (located on the right-hand side of the
window). Click the Scan button.

Scan Settings
The Scan Settings dialog box has three main functions. Firstly, it allows you to enable or disable
the real-time and email scanners. Secondly, it allows you to choose the actions you wish to occur
when dealing with infected items (cleaning and quarantining). The Scan Settings dialog box also
allows you to set up a list of items to be excluded from both the on-demand and real-time scans.

The checkboxes are used to make your selections. They operate on the basis that a tick indicates
the option is switched on, and no tick indicates the option is switched off. For example, to turn off
the email scanner, un-check the checkbox under the Enable column, in the Email Scanner row.
The Restore Defaults button can be used to change all the options to the default settings, which
are the same settings used in the initial or fresh installation.

•Quarantine - Enables infected items to be quarantined.
•Exclusions - See Below.

Scanning Exclusions
If you click the Scan Settings button, located on the Scan My Computer tab, you will notice on the
right hand side of the dialog box an Exclusions column and two buttons allowing you to Modify.
These buttons allow you to enable a list of items to be excluded from the on-demand and real-
time scanners.
In certain circumstances, large or particular problematic files and folders can lead to delays or
conflicts when being scanned by antivirus software. The exclusion list can be used if you wish to
exclude certain files or folders from being scanned.
Exclusion List Usage
To open the exclusion list dialog box, from the Scan Settings window, click the Modify button
relating to the scanner you wish to set up an exclusion for.
To set up a new exclusion:
•Click the Add button.
•Enter the path and name of the item you wish to be excluded from the scan. You can
click the Browse button to exclude an entire folder.
•Click the OK button.
Note: When adding entries using the path field, you cannot enter an entry ending in the *
character. If you wish to exclude an entire folder or drive, it is recommended that you use the
Browse button to do this.
To edit your entries in the exclusion list:
•Highlight the entry you wish to be edited by clicking once on it.
•Click the Edit button to the right
•Edit your entry in the field provided or select the Browse button to make the desired
change.
•Once you have changed your entry, click the OK button.
To remove an entry from the exclusion list:
•Highlight the entry you wish to be removed by clicking once on it.
•Click the Remove button
•Once your list of files and folders is set up in the desired way, click the Apply button to
continue.
All files and folders mentioned in the exclusion list will be excluded from the scanner you were
configuring.

Real-time Protection
EZ Antivirus automatically checks all files accessed, and all incoming email messages for viruses.
Throughout this chapter, the term real-time protection applies to real-time file and email scanning.
The real-time protection is the most vital antivirus component. It is actively scanning all your files
and emails in the background as you use your computer.
Settings for the real-time protection are controlled by the Scan Settings dialog mentioned earlier.
The Scan Settings dialog box is initiated by opening EZ Antivirus and selecting the Virus
Scanning tab, then clicking the Scan Settings button.
What gets scanned?
By default, the real-time protection is enabled and actively scanning. This scanning will occur
from the moment you restart your computer after the initial installation, until you disable a
particular real-time scanning component, or uninstall the product. This means that every time you
access a file, or receive an email, EZ Antivirus will automatically check it, to make sure it is not
malicious.
Real-time File Scanner
The real-time file scanner scans all items you access. For example:
•Documents you may be working on.
•Web pages you visit.
•New software you install.
•Files you load from disks or CDs.
Real-time Email Scanner
The real-time email scanner scans all emails that are delivered to you. For example:
•Emails containing an infected file attachment.
•Email sent in HTML format containing scripts.
•Worms attempting to exploit vulnerabilities in software.
The Infection Report Window
As mentioned above, EZ Antivirus will display a window when an infection is detected. This is
displayed every time the real-time protection detects an infected item.

The following headings are displayed in the Infection Report window:
•Filename: Displays the name and path of the infected item that was detected.
•Infection: Gives the name of the virus that was detected. You will notice that this is in the
form of a hyperlink. If you are connected to the Internet, you can click this link to bring up
further detailed information about the virus detected.
•Type: The type of item detected. For example, file or email.
•Status: The status of the infected item. This can include cleaned, removed, quarantined
and infected.
•Info: This is also a hyperlink. If you click the info link, another window will appear giving
more detailed information about the particular infected item you have highlighted. This is
called the Quarantine Information window.
The Infection Report Window will also display the total number of infected items relating to
that particular scan.
Disabling and Snoozing Real-time Protection
EZ Antivirus provides the flexibility to disable part of, or all of the real-time protection, or
temporarily disable it for a set period of time. Although it is not recommended to completely
disable the real-time protection, you may need to switch it off for various purposes.
Disabling the Real-Time Protection
Real-time File Scanner
•Choose the Scan Settings button from the Virus Scanning tab.
•In the Real-time Scanner row, de-select the Enable checkbox.
•Click the OK button.
•EZ Antivirus will prompt you to re-start your computer.
Real-time Email Scanner
•Choose the Scan Settings button from the Virus Scanning tab.
•In the Email Scanner row, de-select the Enable checkbox.
•Click the OK button.
•EZ Antivirus will prompt you to re-start your computer.
Temporarily Disabling the Real-time Protection (Snoozing)
There are several scenarios where you may wish to disable your antivirus software. For example,
the installation of some software may cause complications if your antivirus software is checking
system critical files. The Snooze option can be used to temporarily suspend your real-time
protection while the software is being installed.
To use the snooze option, right-click the EZ Antivirus tray icon, and select Snooze Antivirus
Protection. The Snooze dialog box will appear.

Enter the number of minutes (1-999) that you wish to suspend or snooze your protection, the
simply click Snooze. At the end of this time your antivirus protection will be automatically re-
activated.
At any stage of the snooze activation, the Snooze option can be accessed by right-clicking the
tray icon (which is next to the clock). When the snooze option is enabled, the tray icon will appear
with a clock through it.
To re-enable the real-time protection, right click the tray icon, and select the snooze option again,
then click the Wake Now button.
EZ Antivirus Updates
Updating Introduction
Antivirus software requires constant updating to remain effective. EZ Antivirus takes care of the
update process for the user, by automatically updating itself on a regular basis. It also provides
the flexibility to choose a time that the user wishes to perform the update.
As well as updating with new virus information to provide detection for the latest viruses, EZ
Antivirus will also update other essential components using the same automatic update process.
In this way, the user doesn’t have to worry about constant updating, and upgrading tasks which
take up valuable time.
Automatically Updating
As mentioned, EZ Antivirus updates automatically. If you have installed the program, and have
not changed any of the updating options, EZ Antivirus will perform an update several times a day.
This ensures that your antivirus software is at all times prepared to detect the very latest viruses.
Manually Updating
It is also possible to manually update EZ Antivirus at any time by using one of the following
methods:
•Open EZ Antivirus and select the Update tab, then click the Update Antivirus button.
•Right-click on the EZ Antivirus tray icon, and select the Update Antivirus option.

The Update Tray Icon
When the update is running, it will be represented by a small tray icon, at the bottom right-hand
side of the screen, next to the clock:

If you hover your mouse over the icon, details about the update progress are displayed. If you
double-click the tray icon, the Update Progress window is displayed.
If the update fails, or cannot complete successfully, the Update Alert icon will appear in your
system tray:

If you double-click or right click the Update Alert icon, the Warnings dialog box will be displayed.
Update Warnings
Detailed information about problems you may encounter when updating is displayed in the
Update Warnings dialog box. The window lists the date and time of the failure, and lists the type
of failure. There is also a Help hyperlink which can be clicked to bring up a detailed help topic
describing the problem encountered.

Update Out of Date Notification
If EZ Antivirus has not successfully performed an update for a period of time, the EZ Antivirus tray
icon will appear with an exclamation mark through it. If the update has not been performed for a
long period of time, the icon will appear with a cross through it. If you hover your mouse over the
icon, a message will be displayed stating that the antivirus protection is out of date.

The Update Progress Window
The Update Progress window is also displayed when the update is running. If you can’t see the
window, double-click the update tray icon (mentioned above). The Update Progress window
displays all the information relevant to the update process. This includes the status of the update,
the progress - measured in kB and percentage, and the speed of the download measured in kB
per second. At any stage, the update can be canceled using the button provided. The update will
automatically start again shortly after any cancellation.
Scheduling the Automatic Update
As mentioned above, you can allow EZ Antivirus to perform the update automatically at frequent
intervals, or you can choose a set time for the update to be performed. Choosing a set time gives
you flexibility over your updates. For example, if you use a dial-up connection and you wish the
update to run at a time when you regularly connect to the Internet. Or, if you wish the update to
run at a time when you are not using the computer. The time, and frequency of the updates can
be set using the Schedule Update Settings dialog box. This is accessed by clicking the Schedule
Update button from the Update tab. The following options are available from within this dialog
box:
Update Type
Update automatically: Selecting this option lets EZ Antivirus automatically update on a regular
basis. There is no need to enter any extra information in the dialog box. This option is
recommended for most users.
Do not update automatically: Selecting this option prevent EZ Antivirus automatically updating.
It is assumed you will manually update using the Update Antivirus button. Use this option with
caution.
Update according to the schedule time below: This option allows you to choose your desired
time to perform the automatic update, and lets you choose how often the update will be
performed.
Schedule
Start time: Enter a date and time to commence the automatic updates.
Repeat interval: Enter the amount of time to wait between updates. If you require multiple
updates on the same day, enter 0 in the days field, and choose the amount of hours to wait
between updates.
