Introduction
There are two components to the smoke
detector, a 509 Transmitter built into a
plastic adaptor ring, and the detector body
itself, see Figure 1.

Figure 2 shows the 509 radio transmitter in
more detail.

Figure 2. 509 Transmitter
When smoke triggers the detector it sounds
its siren. The microphone in the 509
transmitter detects the sound and causes
the transmitter to send a signal to the 500r+
control unit. (There is no direct connection
between the smoke detector and the
transmitter.)
If the battery of the smoke detector is low
then the detector starts giving a series of
short “beeps”. The transmitter also detects
these sounds and sends a low battery signal
to the control unit. The transmitter also
sends a low battery signal if its own batteries
are low.
Installation
Connecting Batteries
There are two sets of batteries that need
connecting in order to make the smoke
detector work: the smoke detector’s own
battery, and two 1.5V ‘AAA’ size in the
transmitter.
Follow the instruction leaflet to connect the
smoke detector’s battery.
Insert the two AAA batteries into the
transmitter. Make sure you insert them with
the correct polarity.
Register the Detector
To register the detector with the control unit
see “4. Programming - Learning Detectors”
in the 500r+ Installation and Programming
Guide. Make sure you point the red activity
LED on the transmitter at the Learn sensor
on the 500r+. Trigger the transmitter by
pressing the Test button.
Check Final Location
When siting the smoke detector follow the
recommendations in the instruction leaflet
that accompanies the detector.
Once you have chosen a site for the detector
you should check that the transmitter can
communicate successfully with the control
unit. Make sure the control unit is in
programming mode and then carry out a

walk test with the smoke detector (see “5.
Testing - Testing Detectors” in the 500r+
Installation and Programming Guide).
1) Enter the walk test command (71).
All LEDs light for 2 seconds, and then
the control unit enters walk test mode.
2) Hold the transmitter and smoke detector
in the position where they are to be
located and operate by pressing the test
button on the smoke detector.
The smoke detector siren should operate
and the activity LED on the transmitter
flash briefly as it transmits an alarm
signal.
3) Check that the control unit has received
the signal. The control unit should give a
chime tone and turn the relevant zone
LED on for five seconds.

Install Detector
Note: While drilling holes in wall or ceiling,
place the smoke detector where it will not be
covered in dust
1) Place the transmitter against the ceiling
where you want the detector to be.
2) Mark and drill fixing holes in the ceiling.
Secure the transmitter to ceiling or wall
using 8mm countersunk head screws.
3) Undo the detector base-plate from the
detector, and mount it on the transmitter
using the fixing screws provided.
4) Slot the detector body into the base
plate and make sure it is secure.
Service
The batteries in the 509 transmitter should
last 2 years with normal use. Replace the
batteries in the transmitter at the same time
as you replace the battery in the smoke
detector.
