Safe Operation Practices for Ride-On Mowers
IMPORTANT: THIS CUTTING MACHINE IS CAPABLE OF AMPUTATING HANDS AND FEET AND THROWING
OBJECTS. FAILURE TO OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS
INJURY OR DEATH,
I. GENERAL OPERATION
Read,undemtand,and followall instructionsinthemanual
and on themachinebeforestarting.
•Only allow responsibleadults, who are familiar with the
instructions,tooperatethe machine.
•Clear the area of ob ects suchas rocks toys, wire, etc,,
whch coud be pckedupand thrownbytheblade.
Besuretheareaisclearofotherpeoplebeforemowing.Stop
machineifanyone entersthe area.
Nevercarrypassengers,
•Donotmowinreverseunlessabsolutelynecessary,Always
lookdownandbehindbeforeandwhilebacking.
•Beawareofthemowerdischargedirectionanddonotpoint
itat anyone. Do not operatethe mowerwithouteitherthe
entiregrasscatcherorthe guardin place.
Slowdownbeforeturning.
Neverleavea runningmachineunattended.Alwaysturnoff
blades,set parkingbrake,stop engine,and remove keys
beforedismounting.
•Turn offbladeswhennotmowing.
•Stopengine before removinggrasscatcher or unclogging
chute.
Mowonlyindaylightor goodartificiallight.
Do not operatethe machinewhile under the influenceof
alcoholor drugs.
•Watchfortrafficwhenoperatingnearorcrossingroadways.
• Useextracare when loadingorunloadingthe machineinto
a trailerortruck.
II, SLOPE OPERATION
Slopesare a majorfactor relatedto loss-of-controland tipover
accidents,whichcan resultinsevereinuryor death. Allslopes
requireextrecaution.Ifyoucannotbackupthesobeorifyoufeel
uneasyon it,do notmowit.
DO:
•Mow up and down slopes, notacross.
•Remove obstacles such as rocks, tree limbs, etc.
•Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Uneven terrain could
overturn the machine. Tall grass can hide obstacles.
Use slow speed. Choose a low gear so that you willnot have
to stop or shift while on the slope.
•Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for wheel
weights or counterweights to improve stability.
•Use extra care with grass catchers or other attachments.
These can change the stability ofthe machine.
• Keep all movement on the slopes slow and gradual. Do not
make sudden changes in speed or direction.
•Avoid starting or stopping on a slope. If tires lose traction,
disengage the blades and proceed slowly straight down the
slope.
DO NOT:
Donotturnonslopesunlessnececsary, andthan turnslowly
and gradually downhill, if possible.
•Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches or embankments. The
mower could suddenly turn over if a wheel is over the edge
of a cliff or ditch, or ifan edge caves in.
•Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced traction could cause
sliding.
•Do not try to stabilize the machine by putting your foot on the
ground.
•Do not use grass catcher on steep slopes.
IlL CHILDREN
Tragic accidentscan occur if the operator is not alert to the
presenceofchildren.Childrenareoftenattractedtothemachine
andthemowingactivity.Neverassumethatchildrenwillremain
whereyoulastsaw them.
•Keepchildrenoutofthemowingareaandunderthewatchful
careofanotherresponsibleadult.
•Be alertandturnmachineoffifchildrenenterthearea,
•Beforeandwhen backing,lookbehindand downforsmall
children.
•Never cam/children. They may fall off and be ssdously
injuredorinterferewithsafe machineoperation.
•Never allowchildrentooperatethemachine.
•Use extra care when approachingblind corners,shrubs,
trees,or otherobjectsthatmay obscurevision.
IV. SERVICE
Useextracareinhandlinggasolineandotherfuels.Theyare
flammable andvaporsare explosive.
Useonlyan approvedcontainer. ' '
Never remove gas cap or add fuel with the engine
running.Allowengineto coolbeforerefueling. Do not
smoke.
Neverrefuelthemachineindoors.
Neverstorethe machineorfuel containerinsidewhere
there isanopenflame, suchas a waterheater.
•Never runa machineinsidea closedarea.
•Keepnutsandbolts,especiallybladeattachmentbolts,tight
and keepequipmentin goodcondition.
•Never tamper with safety devices. Check their proper
operationregulady,
•Keepmachinefreeofgrass,leaves,orotherdebrisbuild-up.
Clean oil or fuel spillage. Allow machineto cool before
storing.
•Stop and inspectthe equipment if you stdke an object.
Repair,ifnecessary,beforerestarting.
•Nevermakeadjustmentsorrepairswiththeenginerunning,
Grasscatchercomponentsaresubjecttowear,damage,and
deterioration,which could expose moving parts or allow
objectsto be thrown. Frequentlycheck componentsand
replacewithmanufacturer'srecommendedparts,whennec-
essary.
•Mowerbladesare sharpand cancut, Wrap theblade(s)or
weargloves,and useextracautionwhenservicingthem.
•Check brake operationfrequently. Adjustand service as
required.
