Two Years on Snow Thrower
When operated and maintained according to all supplied instructions, if this snow thrower fails due to a defect in material or workmanship within two years from the
date or purchase, return it to any authorized Craftsman drop-off location for free repair. For the nearest authorized location, call 1-800-4MYHOME.
This warranty applies for only 90 days from the date of purchase if this snow thrower is ever used for commercial or rental purposes.
This warranty covers ONLY defects in material and workmanship. Sears will NOT pay for:
• Expendableitemsthatbecomewornduringnormaluse,includingbutnotlimitedtoskidshoes,shaveplate,shearpins,sparkplug,aircleaner,belts,
and oil filter.
• Standardmaintenanceservicing,oilchanges,ortune-ups.
• Tirereplacementorrepaircausedbypuncturesfromoutsideobjects,suchasnails,thorns,stumps,orglass.
• Tireorwheelreplacementorrepairresultingfromnormalwear,accident,orimproperoperationormaintenance.
• Repairsnecessarybecauseofoperatorabuse,includingbutnotlimitedtodamagecausedbyimpactingobjectsthatbendtheframeorcrankshaft,or
over-speeding the engine.
• Repairsnecessarybecauseofoperatornegligence,includingbutnotlimitedto,electricalandmechanicaldamagecausedbyimproperstorage,failure
to use the proper grade and amount of engine oil, or failure to maintain the equipment according to the instructions contained in the operator’s manual.
• Engine(fuelsystem)cleaningorrepairscausedbyfueldeterminedtobecontaminatedoroxidized(stale).Ingeneral,fuelshouldbeusedwithin30
days of its purchase date.
• Normaldeteriorationandwearoftheexteriornishes,orproductlabelreplacement.

Always wear safety glasses or eye shields during operation and•
whileperforminganadjustmentorrepairtoprotectyoureyes.

eyes.
Do not operate without wearing adequate winter outer garments.•
Donotwearjewelry,longscarvesorotherlooseclothing,which
couldbecomeentangledinmovingparts.Wearfootwearwhich
will improve footing on slippery surfaces.
Useagroundedthree-wireextensioncordandreceptacleforall•
machines with electric start engines.
Disengageallcontrolleversbeforestartingtheengine.•
Adjustcollectorhousingheighttocleargravelorcrushedrock•
surfaces.
Neverattempttomakeanyadjustmentswhileengineisrunning,•
exceptwherespecificallyrecommendedintheoperator’smanual.

Safe Handling of Gasoline
Toavoidpersonalinjuryorpropertydamageuseextremecarein
handlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammableandthevaporsare
explosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycanoccurwhengasolineisspilled
on yourself or your clothes which can ignite. Wash your skin and
change clothes immediately.
Use only an approved gasoline container.•
Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersources•
of ignition.
Never fuel machine indoors.•
Never remove gas cap or add fuel while the engine is hot•
or running.
Allowenginetocoolatleasttwominutesbeforerefueling.•
Never over fill fuel tank. Fill tank to no more than ½ inch•
belowbottomoffillernecktoprovidespaceforfuel
expansion.
Replace gasoline cap and tighten securely.•

not use a nozzle lock-open device.
OPERATION
Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts, in the auger/impeller•
housingorchuteassembly.Contactwiththerotatingpartscan
amputate hands and feet.
Theauger/impellercontrolleverisasafetydevice.Neverbypass•
its operation. Doing so makes the machine unsafe and may cause
personalinjury.
Thecontrolleversmustoperateeasilyinbothdirectionsand•
automatically return to the disengaged position when released.
Neveroperatewithamissingordamagedchuteassembly.Keep•
all safety devices in place and working.
Never run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. Engine•
exhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,anodorlessanddeadlygas.
Do not operate machine while under the influence of alcohol or•
drugs.
Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcancauseaburn.Donot•
touch.Keepchildrenaway.
Exerciseextremecautionwhenoperatingonorcrossinggravel•
surfaces. Stay alert for hidden hazards or traffic.
Exercisecautionwhenchangingdirectionandwhileoperatingon•
slopes.
Plan your snow-throwing pattern to avoid discharge towards•
windows,walls,carsetc.Thus,avoidingpossibleproperty
damageorpersonalinjurycausedbyaricochet.
Neverdirectdischargeatchildren,bystandersandpetsorallow•
anyone in front of the machine.
Donotoverloadmachinecapacitybyattemptingtoclearsnowat•
too fast of a rate.
Neveroperatethismachinewithoutgoodvisibilityorlight.Always•
besureofyourfootingandkeepafirmholdonthehandles.Walk,
never run.
Disengage power to the auger/impeller when transporting or not•
in use.
Never operate machine at high transport speeds on slippery•
surfaces.Lookdownandbehindandusecarewhenbackingup.
Ifthemachineshouldstarttovibrateabnormally,stoptheengine,•
disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it against the engine.
Inspectthoroughlyfordamage.Repairanydamagebefore
starting and operating.
Disengageallcontrolleversandstopenginebeforeyouleave•
theoperatingposition(behindthehandles).Waituntiltheauger/
impellercomestoacompletestopbeforeuncloggingthechute
assembly,makinganyadjustments,orinspections.
Never put your hand in the discharge or collector openings. Do•
notunclogchuteassemblywhileengineisrunning.Shutoff
engineandremainbehindhandlesuntilallmovingpartshave
stoppedbeforeunclogging.
Useonlyattachmentsandaccessoriesapprovedbythemanufac-•
turer(e.g.wheelweights,tirechains,cabsetc.).
When starting engine, pull cord slowly until resistance is felt, then•
pullrapidly.Rapidretractionofstartercord(kickback)willpull
hand and arm toward engine faster than you can let go. Broken
bones,fractures,bruisesorsprainscouldresult.
Ifsituationsoccurwhicharenotcoveredinthismanual,usecare•
andgoodjudgment.ContactCustomerSupportforassistance
and the name of your nearest servicing dealer.
CLEARING A CLOGGED DISCHARGE CHUTE
Hand contact with the rotating impeller inside the discharge chute
isthemostcommoncauseofinjuryassociatedwithsnowthrowers.
Never use your hand to clean out the discharge chute.
To clear the chute:

Never tamper with safety devices. Check their proper operation•
regularly.Refertothemaintenanceandadjustmentsectionsof
this manual.
Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting machine disengage all•
control levers and stop the engine. Wait until the auger/impeller
come to a complete stop. Disconnect the spark plug wire and
ground against the engine to prevent unintended starting.
Checkboltsandscrewsforpropertightnessatfrequentintervals•
to keep the machine in safe working condition. Also, visually
inspect machine for any damage.
Do not change the engine governor setting or over-speed the•
engine.Thegovernorcontrolsthemaximumsafeoperatingspeed
of the engine.
Snowthrowershaveplatesandskidshoesaresubjecttowear•
and damage. For your safety protection, frequently check all
components and replace with original equipment manufacturer’s
(OEM)partsonly.“Useofpartswhichdonotmeettheoriginal
equipment specifications may lead to improper performance and
compromisesafety!”
Check control levers periodically to verify they engage and disen-•
gageproperlyandadjust,ifnecessary.Refertotheadjustment
section in this operator’s manual for instructions.
Maintainorreplacesafetyandinstructionlabels,asnecessary.•
Observeproperdisposallawsandregulationsforgas,oil,etc.to•
protect the environment.
Prior to storing, run machine a few minutes to clear snow from•
machine and prevent freeze up of auger/impeller.
Never store the machine or fuel container inside where there is an•
open flame, spark or pilot light such as a water heater, furnace,
clothes dryer etc.
Always refer to the operator’s manual for proper instructions on•
off-season storage.
Check fuel line, tank, cap, and fittings frequently for cracks or•
leaks. Replace if necessary.
Do not crank engine with spark plug removed.•
AccordingtotheConsumerProductsSafetyCommission(CPSC)•
andtheU.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),thisproduct
has an Average Useful Lifeofseven(7)years,or60hoursof
operation. At the end of the Average Useful Life have the machine
inspectedannuallybyanauthorizedservicedealertoensurethat
all mechanical and safety systems are working properly and not
wornexcessively.Failuretodosocanresultinaccidents,injuries
or death.
DO NOT MODIFY ENGINE
Toavoidseriousinjuryordeath,donotmodifyengineinanyway.
Tampering with the governor setting can lead to a runaway engine and
cause it to operate at unsafe speeds. Never tamper with factory setting
of engine governor.
NOTICE REGARDING EMISSIONS
Engines which are certified to comply with California and federal
EPAemissionregulationsforSORE(SmallOffRoadEquipment)are
certified to operate on regular unleaded gasoline, and may include
thefollowingemissioncontrolsystems:EngineModification(EM),
OxidizingCatalyst(OC),SecondaryAirInjection(SAI)andThreeWay
Catalyst(TWC)ifsoequipped.
SPARK ARRESTOR
Ifasparkarresterisused,itshouldbemaintainedineffectiveworking
orderbytheoperator.IntheStateofCaliforniatheaboveisrequired
bylaw(Section4442oftheCaliforniaPublicResourcesCode).Other
states may have similar laws. Federal laws apply on federal lands.

IMPORTANT: This unit is shipped with the engine full of oil. After
assembly,seepage10forfuelandoildetails.
Removing From Carton
1. Cut the corners of the carton and lay the sides flat on the ground.
Remove all packing inserts.
2. Move the snow thrower out of the carton.
3. Makecertainthecartonhasbeencompletelyemptiedbefore
discarding it.

NOTE: Reference to right, left, front or rear of the unit is from the
operating position unless otherwise stated.
Setting Up The Handle
NOTE: Beawareofthethreelooselyfittedcabletiesattachedtothe
lowerhandlethatwillbeutilizedlatertosecurethecables.
1. Loosenandremovethewingknob,saddlewasher,handletaband
carriage screw on each side of the lower handle. See Fig. 1.
2. Slideoneofthelooselyfittedcabletiesfromtherightsideofthelower
handleuptothecrossmemberofthelowerhandle.Leavethesecond
cabletieinplaceontherightsideofthelowerhandle.SeeFig.3for
reference.
IMPORTANT: Itwillbenecessarytolifttheupperhandlewhileslidingup
thiscabletietopreventdamagetothecable.
3. Lifttheupperhandleupandpositionitoverthelowerhandle,align-
ingtheholeswherethewingknobswereremoved(1).SeeFig.2.
CAUTION
Becarefulnottobendorkinkthecables.
4. Insertacarriagescrewfromtheoutsidethroughahandletab,the
upperandlowerhandles,asaddlewasherandintothewingknob
(2).Repeatontheotherside.

Skid Shoe
Thesnowthrowerskidshoesareadjustedupwardatthefactoryforshipping
purposes.Adjustthemdownward,ifdesired,priortooperatingthesnow
thrower.
CAUTION
Itisnotrecommendedthatyouoperatethissnowthrowerongravel
as it can easily pick up and throw loose gravel, causing personal
injuryordamagetothesnowthrowerandsurroundingproperty.
For close snow removal on a smooth surface, raise skid shoes•
higher on the auger housing.
Useamiddleorlowerpositionwhentheareatobeclearedis•
uneven, such as a gravel driveway
NOTE:Ifyouchoosetooperatethesnowthroweronagravelsurface,
keeptheskidshoesinpositionformaximumclearancebetweenthe
ground and the shave plate.
To adjust the skid shoes:
1. Loosenthefourhexnuts(twooneachside)andcarriagebolts.
Move skid shoes to desired position. See Fig. 4.
2. Makecertaintheentirebottomsurfaceofskidshoeisagainstthe
ground to avoid uneven wear on the skid shoes.
3. Retightennutsandboltssecurely.
Shear Pins
Apairofreplacementaugershearpinsandbow
tie cotter pins are included with your snow thrower.
Store them in a safe place until needed.
Clean-Out Tool
The chute clean-out tool is fastened to the top of the auger housing with a
mountingclipandacabletieatthefactory.Cutthecabletiebeforeoperating
the snow thrower. See Fig. 5.
Tire Pressure
The proper inflation pressure is between15psiand20psi. Check the tire
pressureperiodicallyandmaintainequalpressureinbothtiresatall
times.Excessivepressure(above20psi)maycausethewheel(tire/
rim)assemblytoburstwithsufficientforcetocauseseriousinjury.Do
notover-inflatethetire.Useamanualpumporportableelectrictire
inflatortopreventover-inflation.NEVERUSEANAIRCOMPRESSOR.
WARNING
Over-inflatingthetirewithexcessivepressure(above20psi)may
causethetire/rimtoburstwithsufficientforcetocauseserious
pressure.

Fuel Recommedations
Useautomotivegasoline(unleadedorlowleadedtominimizecombus-
tionchamberdeposits)withaminimumof87octane.Gasolinewith
upto10%ethanolor15%MTBE(MethylTertiaryButylEther)canbe
used.Neveruseanoil/gasolinemixtureordirtygasoline.Avoidgetting
dirt, dust, or water in the fuel tank. DO NOT use E85 gasoline.
Refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine stopped. Do not•
smoke or allow flames or sparks in the area where the engine is
refueled or where gasoline is stored.
Do not overfill the fuel tank. After refueling, make sure the tank•
cap is closed properly and securely.
Be careful not to spill fuel when refueling. Spilled fuel or fuel vapor•
mayignite.Ifanyfuelisspilled,makesuretheareaisdrybefore
starting the engine.
Avoidrepeatedorprolongedcontactwithskinorbreathingof•
vapor.
Adding Fuel
WARNING
Useextremecarewhenhandlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremely
flammableandthevaporsareexplosive.Neverfuelthemachine
indoorsorwhiletheengineishotorrunning.Extinguishcigarettes,
cigars, pipes and other sources of ignition.
WARNING
Always keep hands and feet clear of equipment moving parts. Do not
useapressurizedstartingfluid.Vaporsareflammable.
Cleanaroundfuelfillbeforeremovingcaptofuel.1.
A fuel level indicator is located in the fuel tank. Fill tank until fuel2.
reaches the fuel level indictor, Fig. 6. Be careful not to overfill.
Checking Oil Level
CAUTION
The engine is shipped with oil in the engine. You must, however,
check the oil level prior to operating the snow thrower. Running the
engine with insufficient oil can cause serious engine damage and
void the engine warranty.
NOTE: Be sure to check the engine on a level surface with the engine
stopped.
Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and wipe the dipstick clean. See Fig.
1.

NOTE: Do not overfill. Overfilling with oil may result in engine smoking,
hard starting or spark plug fouling.

IMPORTANT: Performthefollowingtestbeforeoperatingthesnow
thrower for the first time and at the start of each winter season.
Checktheadjustmentoftheaugercontrolasfollows:
1. Whenaugercontrolisreleasedandinthedisengaged“up”posi-
tion,cableshouldhaveverylittleslack,butshouldNOTbetight.
WARNING
Donotover-tightenthecable.Over-tighteningmaypreventtheauger
from disengaging and compromise the safety of the snow thrower.
2. Inawell-ventilatedarea,startthesnowthrowerengineasin-
structed on page 10 under the heading Starting Engine. Make sure
the throttle is set in the FAST position.
3. Whilestandinginoperator’sposition(behindunit)engageauger.
4. Allowaugertoremainengagedforapproximatelyten(10)seconds
beforereleasingtheaugercontrol.Repeatthisseveraltimes.
5. With the engine running in the FAST position and the auger
controlinthedisengaged“up”position,walktothefrontofthe
machine.
6. Confirm that the auger has completely stopped rotating and shows
NO signs of motion.
IMPORTANT: IftheaugershowsANYsignsofrotating,immediately
return to the operator’s position and shut off the engine. Wait for all
movingpartstostopbeforereadjustingtheaugercontrolcableas
instructed in the Maintenance & Service section of this manual.

Operation
NOTE: Compare Figures 5 & 6 with your equipment and follow descrip-

Drive Control
Located on the underside of the upper handle, the drive control is used
to engage/disengage wheels. Squeeze the drive control against the
upper handle to engage the wheels; release to disengage.
Auger Control
Theaugercontrolisadjacenttotheupperhandle.Squeezetheauger
control against the upper handle to engage the augers; release to
disengage the augers.
WARNING
Nevermakeadjustmentstothechuteassemblyunlessbothaugerand
drivecontrolsaredisengagedandtheoperatorisstandingbesidetheunit.
IMPORTANT: RefertoAugerControlTestintheSet-Up&Adjustments
section of this manual prior to operating your snow thrower. Read and
followallinstructionscarefullyandperformalladjustmentstoverify
your snow thrower is operating safely and properly.
Chute Handle
The direction of snow throwing corresponds to the direction of the
chuteopening.Usethechutehandletoturnthechuteassemblyinthe
direction you wish to throw the snow.
Chute Knob
Thedistancesnowisthrowncanbeadjustedbyeitherraisingor
loweringtheupperchute.Loosenthechuteknobonthesideofthe
upperchutetoadjust.Pivottheupperchutetodesiredposition,and
retightenthechuteknob.
Shave Plate
The shave plate maintains contact with pavement as the snow
throwerispropelled,allowingsnowclosetopavement’ssurfacetobe
discharged.
Skid Shoe
Thespacebetweentheshaveplateandthegroundcanbeadjusted.
For close snow removal, place skid shoes in the low position. Use
middleorhighpositionwhenareatobeclearedisunevenorongravel
surfaces.

Thethrottlecontrolislocatedontheengine.Itregulatesthespeedof
the engine and will shut off the engine when pushed down completely.

Clean-Out Tool
WARNING
Neveruseyourhandstoclearacloggedchuteassembly.Shutoff
engineandremainbehindhandlesuntilallmovingpartshavestopped
beforeusingtheclean-outtooltoclearthechuteassembly.
The chute clean-out tool is conveniently fastened to the rear of the
augerhousingwithamountingclip.Shouldsnowandicebecome
lodgedinthechuteassemblyduringoperation,proceedasfollowsto
safelycleanthechuteassemblyandchuteopening:
ReleaseboththeAugerControlandtheDriveControl.1.
Stoptheenginebyremovingtheignitionkey.2.
Remove the clean-out tool from the clip which secures it to the3.
rear of the auger housing.
Use the shovel-shaped end of the clean-out tool to dislodge and4.
scoop any snow and ice which has formed in and near the chute
assembly.
Refasten the clean-out tool to the mounting clip on the rear of5.
the auger housing, reinsert the ignition key and start the snow
thrower’s engine.

remainingsnowandicefromthechuteassembly.
Before Starting Engine
WARNING
Read, understand, and follow all instructions and warnings on the
machineandinthismanualbeforeoperating.
Engine Oil
Theunitwasshippedwithoilintheengine.Checkoillevelbeforeeach
operation to ensure adequate oil in the engine. For further instructions,
refer to the Maintenance & Service section of this manual.
NOTE: Be sure to check the engine on a level surface with the engine
stopped.
Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and wipe the dipstick clean.1.
Insertthecap/dipstickintotheoilfillerneck,butdo2. not screw it in.
Removetheoilfillercap/dipstick.Ifthelevelislow,slowlyadd3.
oil(5W-30,withaminimumclassificationofSF/SG)untiloillevel
registersbetweenhigh(H)andlow(L).
NOTE: Do not overfill. Overfilling with oil may result in engine smoking,
hard starting or spark plug fouling.
Replaceandtightencap/dipstickfirmlybeforestartingengine.4.
Augers
When engaged, the augers rotate and draw snow into the auger
housing.
Chute Assembly
Snow drawn into the auger housing is discharged out the chute
assembly.
Choke Control
Activatingchokecontrolbyturningitalltheway
totheleftclosesthechokeplateoncarburetor
and aids in starting the engine. For information on
choke usage, see Starting The Engine later in this
section.
Recoil Starter & Starter Handle
This motor is fitted with a recoil action pull start and a mitten grip
handle for easy access while wearing gloves or mittens.
Ignition Key
Theignitionkeyisasafetydevice.Itmustbefully
inserted in order for the engine to start. Remove
the ignition key when the snow thrower is not in
use.
NOTE: Do not turn the ignition key in an attempt to
starttheengine.Doingsomaycauseittobreak.
Electric Starter Button
Pressingtheelectricstarterbuttonengagestheengine’selectric
starter when plugged into a 120V power source.
Electric Starter Outlet
Requirestheuseofathree-prongoutdoorextensioncord(included)
and a 120V power source/wall outlet.
Primer
Depressing primer forces fuel directly into engine’s
carburetortoaidincold-weatherstarting.Referto
the starting instructions in the Operation section
of this manual for proper primer usage. The image
belowleft,correspondswiththelabelonthe
engine identifying the primer.
Oil Fill
Remove oil cap to add oil. Refer to the Maintenance & Service section
for checking and adding oil instructions.
Gasoline Cap
Remove gas cap to add fuel. Unit runs on regular gas.
NOTE: This unit may include a fuel plug, which is only used during
assemblytokeepdirtanddebrisoutoffueltank.Discardthefuelplug
beforefillingthefueltank.
Throttle Control

Gasoline
Useautomotivegasoline(unleadedorlowleadedtominimizecombus-
tionchamberdeposits)withaminimumof87octane.Gasolinewith
upto10%ethanolor15%MTBE(MethylTertiaryButylEther)canbe
used.Neveruseanoil/gasolinemixtureordirtygasoline.Avoidgetting
dirt, dust, or water in the fuel tank. DO NOT use E85 gasoline.
Refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine stopped. Do not•
smoke or allow flames or sparks in the area where the engine is
refueled or where gasoline is stored.
Do not overfill the fuel tank. After refueling, make sure the tank•
cap is closed properly and securely.
Be careful not to spill fuel when refueling. Spilled fuel or fuel vapor•
mayignite.Ifanyfuelisspilled,makesuretheareaisdrybefore
starting the engine.
Avoidrepeatedorprolongedcontactwithskinorbreathingof•
vapor.
WARNING
Useextremecarewhenhandlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremely
flammableandthevaporsareexplosive.Never fuel the machine
indoorsorwhiletheengineishotorrunning.Extinguishcigarettes,
cigars, pipes and other sources of ignition.
Cleanaroundfuelfillbeforeremovingcaptofuel.1.
A fuel level indicator is located in the fuel tank. Fill tank until fuel2.
reaches the fuel level indictor. See Figure 10 inset. Be careful not
to overfill.
Starting The Engine
WARNING
Always keep hands and feet clear of moving parts. Do not use a
pressurizedstartingfluid.Vaporsareflammable.
NOTE: For location of all the engine controls referred to in this section,
refer to Fig. 9 on page 12.
NOTE: Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes after starting.
The engine will not develop full power until it reaches operating
temperatures.
Makecertainboththeaugercontrolanddrivecontrolareinthe1.

Insertignitionkeyintoslot.Makesureitsnapsintoplace.Donot2.
attempt to turn the key.
NOTE: The engine cannot start without the key fully inserted into the
ignition switch.
Electric Starter
WARNING
The optional electric starter is equipped with a grounded three-wire
power cord and plug, and is designed to operate on 120 volt AC
householdcurrent.Itmustbeusedwithaproperlygroundedthree-
prongreceptacleatalltimestoavoidthepossibilityofelectricshock.
Follow all instructions carefully prior to operating the electric starter.
DO NOT use electric starter in the rain.
Determine that your home’s wiring is a three-wire grounded system.
Ask a licensed electrician if you are not certain.
Ifyouhaveagroundedthree-prongreceptacle,proceedasfollows.
Ifyoudonothavetheproperhousewiring,DONOTusetheelectric
starter under any conditions.
Plugtheextensioncordintotheoutletlocatedontheengine’s1.
surface.Plugtheotherendofextensioncordintoathree-prong
120-volt, grounded, AC outlet in a well-ventilated area.

As the engine warms, slowly rotate the choke control to OFF6.

at half-choke position for a short period of time, and then slowly
rotate the choke into OFF position.
After engine is running, disconnect power cord from electric7.
starter. When disconnecting, always unplug the end at the wall
outletbeforeunpluggingtheoppositeendfromtheengine.
Recoil Starter
CAUTION
Do not pull the starter handle while the engine running.
1. MovethrottlecontroltoFAST(rabbit) position.
2. Move choke to the ON position (coldenginestart).Ifengineis
warm, place choke in OFF position.
3. Pushprimerthreetofive(3-5)times,makingsuretocovervent
holewhenpushing.Ifengineiswarm,pushprimeronlyonce.
Always cover vent hole when pushing. Cool weather may require

4. Pullgentlyonthestarterhandleuntilitbeginstoresist,thenpull
quickly and forcefully to overcome the compression. Do not release
thehandleandallowittosnapback.ReturnropeSLOWLYto
originalposition.Ifrequired,repeatthisstep.
5. As the engine warms, slowly rotate the choke control to OFF
position.Iftheenginefalters,restartengineandrunwithchokeat
half-choke position for a short period of time, and then slowly rotate
the choke into OFF position.
WARNING
To avoid unsupervised engine operation, never leave the machine
unattended with the engine running. Turn the engine off after use and
remove ignition key.

Stopping The Engine
Runengineforafewminutesbeforestoppingtohelpdryoffany
moisture on the engine.
Move throttle control to STOP
1. STOP position.
Remove the ignition key. Removing the key will reduce the pos-2.
sibilityofunauthorizedstartingoftheenginewhileequipmentis
notinuse.Keepthekeyinasafeplace.Theenginecannotstart
without the ignition key.
Wipe any moisture away from the controls on the engine.3.
Before Stopping
1. Run engine for a few minutes to help dry off any moisture on engine.
2. Toavoidpossiblefreeze-upoftherecoilstarter,followthisstep:
Recoil Starter
a. With the engine running, pull the starter rope with a rapid,
continuous full arm stroke three or four times.
To Stop The Snow Thrower
1. To stop the wheels, release the drive control.
2. To stop throwing snow, release the auger control.
3. Tostopengine,pushthrottlecontrollevertoOFF STOP and pull out
the key. Do not turn key.
WARNING
Thetemperatureofmufflerandthesurroundingareasmayexceed
150º F. Avoid these areas.
Clearing The Snow
CAUTION: Checktheareatobeclearedforforeignobjects.Remove
foreignobjects,ifany.
1. Start the engine following starting instructions.
2. Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes as the engine will not
develop full power until it reaches operating temperature.
3. Rotatethechuteassemblytothedesireddirection,awayfrom
bystandersand/orbuildings.
4. Makingcertainnobystandersorobstaclesareinfrontoftheunit,
squeeze the auger control completely against the upper handle to
fully engage the augers.
5. While the auger control is engaged, squeeze the drive control
completely against the upper handle to engage the wheels. Do not
“feather”thedrivecontrol.
6. As the snow thrower starts to move, maintain a firm hold on the
handle,andguidethesnowthroweralongthepathtobecleared.
7. Release the auger and drive controls to stop the snow throwing
action and forward motion.
NOTE:Yourunitisequippedwithaclutchinthetransmission.Ifthe
wheels stop turning while trying to discharge large volumes of snow,
immediately disengage the drive control and allow the rotating augers
to discharge snow from the housing. Reduce the clearing width and
continue operation.
8. Oneachsucceedingpass,readjustthechuteassemblytothe
desired position and slightly overlap the previously cleared path.
Positioning Discharge Chute
Loosenthechuteknobandpivotupperchutetodesiredposition.Tighten
thechuteknobmakingsurethecarriageboltiscorrectlypositioned.
Rotate chute handle to desired operating position.
WARNING
Donotliftthesnowthroweratanytimebythechutehandle.
Operating Tips
1. For most efficient snow removal, remove snow immediately after it falls.
2. Dischargesnowdownwindwheneverpossible.Slightlyoverlap
each previous path.
3. Settheskidshoes1/4”belowtheshaveplatefornormalusage.
Theskidshoesmaybeadjustedupwardforhard-packedsnow.
NOTE:Itisnotrecommendedthatyouoperatethissnowthroweron
gravelasloosegravelcanbeeasilypickedupandthrownbytheauger
causingpersonalinjuryand/ordamagetothesnowthrower.
4. Ifforsomereason,youhavetooperatethesnowthrowerongravel,
keeptheskidshoeinthehighestpositionformaximumclearance
betweenthegroundandtheshaveplate.
5. Clean the snow thrower thoroughly after each use.
REPLACING SHEAR PINS
The augers are secured to the spiral shaft with two shear pins and
bow-tieclips.Iftheaugershouldstrikeaforeignobjectoricejam,the
snowthrowerisdesignedsothattheshearpinsmayshear.Ifaugers
will not turn, check to see if the pins have sheared. See Fig. 10.
CAUTION
NEVER replace the auger shear pins with anything other than OEM
PartNo.OEM-738-04124replacementshearpins.Anydamagetothe
augergearboxorothercomponentsasaresultoffailingtodosowill
NOTbecoveredbyyoursnowthrower’swarranty.
WARNING
Always turn off the snow thrower’s engine and remove the key prior to
replacing shear pins.

Checking Engine Oil

this designation on the container.

Checking Spark Plug
NOTE: Check the spark plug once a season or every 25 hours of
operation. Change the spark plug once a season or every 100 hours.

gapped and free of deposits.

Check that the spark plug washer is in good condition and thread4.

General Recommendations
1. Alwaysobservesafetyruleswhenperforminganymaintenance.
2. The warranty on this snow thrower does not cover items that have
beensubjectedtooperatorabuseornegligence.Toreceivefull
value from the warranty, operator must maintain the snow thrower
as instructed in this manual.
3. Periodically check all fasteners and hardware to make sure these
are tight.
WARNING
Beforeservicing,repairing,lubricatingorinspecting,disengageallcontrols
and stop engine. Wait until all moving parts have come to a complete stop.
Disconnect spark plug wire and ground it against the engine to prevent
unintended starting. Always wear safety glasses during operation or while
performinganyadjustmentsorrepairs.
Replacing the Shave Plate and
Skid Shoes
Theshaveplateandskidshoesonthebottomofthesnowthrowerare
subjecttowear.Theseshouldbecheckedperiodicallyandreplaced
when necessary
1. Toreplace,removetwocarriageboltsandnutssecuringeachskidshoe
to the auger housing. See Fig. 15
2. Reassemblenewskidshoeswithhardwarejustremoved.Makesurethe
skidshoesareadjustedtobelevel.
3. Toremoveshaveplate:Removebothskidshoesandhardware
includingcarriageboltsandnutswhichattachshaveplatetothe
snow thrower housing. For location of shave plate, see Figure 15.
4. Reassemblenewshaveplate,makingsureheadsofthecarriagebolts
are to the inside of the housing. Reinstall skid shoes. Tighten securely.
Servicing Augers
The augers are secured to the spiral shaft with four shear pins and
cotterpins.Ifyouhitaforeignobjectoricejam,thesnowthroweris
designed so that the pins may shear. Refer to Figure 15.
Iftheaugersdonotturn,checkifthepinshavesheared.Replace,if
needed, with proper shear pins. Refer to the Parts List in this manual
forthecorrectpartnumber.
IMPORTANT: NEVER replace the auger shear pins with standard pins
orfasteners.Anydamagetotheaugergearboxorothercomponents,
asaresultofdoingso,willNOTbecoveredbyyoursnowthrower’s
warranty.
Lubrication
Foraviewofthelubricationpointsonthesnowthrower,seeFigure16.
1. Lubricatepivotpointsontheaugercontrolanddrivecontrolwitha
light engine oil once a season.
2. Lubricatetheaugeridlerbracketwithalightengineoilonceaseason.
Engine

Replace,ifnecessary,followinstructionsbelow.
Replacing Belts
NOTE: Therearetwobeltsonthissnowthrower:anaugerbeltand
drivebelt.Itisrecommendedthatbothbeltsbereplacedatthesame
time.
1. Remove the spark plug wire from spark plug and ground it against
the engine to prevent accidental starting.
2. Run the engine until the fuel tank is dry to prevent gasoline leakage
in the following steps.

3.Removetheself-tappingscrewshowninFigure17,andpressthe
plastictabstoreleasethebeltcover.Pullthebeltcoverupandout
fromaroundtheengineandchuteassembly.Setitasideandsave.
Auger Belt
IMPORTANT: Gascouldleakfromthecarburetoratthispoint,the
engineshouldhavebeenrununtilthefueltankwasdry,aspreviously
instructed.
1. Tip the snow thrower up and forward so that it rests on the auger
housing.RemovethebeltkeeperascalledoutinFigure19.Return
the snow thrower to its upright position to complete the following
steps.
2. Slipthefrontaugerbeltoffoftheenginepulleypushingitforward
and rolling in off of the pulley. See Figure 18.
3.Squeezetheaugercontrolhandletoreleasetheaugerbrake,
whichisthetabthatholdsthebeltontotheaugerpulley.Remove
thebelt.
4. Replacewithnewbeltafterreplacingthedrivebelt.

NOTE:Replacethedrivebeltbeforereassemblingthenewaugerbelt.

2.Removethespringthatconnectsthetransmissiontoaboltonthe
engine frame. See Figure 19.
NOTE: Itmaybeeasiertofirstremovetheflangelocknut,thenuse
needle-nosedplierstofirmlygripspringandremovefrombolt.
3. Pivotthetransmissionforwardtoreleasepressureonthedrivebelt.
Removebeltfromtransmissionpulley.
4.Removethedrivebeltfromaroundtheenginepulley,andaway
from the unit.
5.Placethenewdrivebeltintothegrooveontheenginepulley.See
Figure 18.
6.Tiltthetransmissionforwardandpositionthedrivebeltontothe
transmission pulley.
7. Reconnectthespringtotheboltontheengineframeandsecure
the transmission. Reinstall the flange lock nut.
8.Installnewaugerbelt.
9.Reassemblethebeltcoveronthesnowthrower.
10.Reassemblethebeltkeepertothehousing.

Adjusting The Auger Cable
Periodicadjustmenttotheaugercontrolcablemayberequireddue
tonormalstretchandwearonthebelt.Adjustmentisneededifthe
augersseemtohesitatewhileturning,buttheenginemaintainsspeed,
or continue turning with the auger control disengaged.
1. Loosentherearhexboltonthecableadjustmentbracket.See
Figure 20.
2. Slidethecableadjustmentbracketbackwardstakingouttheslack
intheaugercable.
3. Retightentherearhexbolt
4. Start engine and verify auger control engages and disengages
properly.
NOTE:Ifaugercontinuestorotatewiththecontroldisengaged,shut
offtheengineandreadjustthecablebracketforward.Thenrecheck
the auger operation.
Maintenance Schedule
Beforeservicing,repairing,lubricatingorinspecting,disengageallcontrolsandstopengine.Waituntilallmovingpartshavecometoacompletestop.
Disconnect spark plug wire and ground it against the engine to prevent unintended starting. Always wear safety glasses during operation or while
performinganyadjustmentsorrepairs.
Followthemaintenanceschedulegivenbelow.Someadjustmentswillhavetobemadeperiodicallytomaintainyourunit
properly.Periodicallycheckallfastenersandmakesurethesearetight.Keeptrackofyourscheduledservicebyfillingin
theServiceDatesfieldbelow.
