Preparation
1. Thoroughlyinspectthe areawherethe equipmentisto beused.Remove
all doormats,newspapers,sleds,boards,wiresand otherforeignobjects,
whichcould betrippedoveror thrownbythe auger/impeller.
2. Alwayswearsafetyglassesor eyeshieldsduringoperationandwhile
performingan adjustmentor repairto protectyoureyes.Thrownobjects
whichricochetcancauseseriousinjurytothe eyes.
3. Donotoperatewithoutwearingadequatewinteroutergarments.Donot
wearjewelry,longscarvesor otherlooseclothing,whichcouldbecome
entangledinmovingparts.Wearfootwearwhichwill improvefootingon
slipperysurfaces.
4. Useagroundedthree-wireextensioncordand receptacleforall unitswith
electricstartengines.
5. Adjustcollectorhousingheighttoclear gravelor crushedrocksurfaces.
6. Disengageall controlleversbeforestartingthe engine.
7. Neverattempttomakeanyadjustmentswhileengineis running,except
wherespecificallyrecommendedinthe operator'smanual.
8. Letengineand machineadjusttooutdoortemperaturebeforestartingto
clearsnow.
9. Toavoidpersonalinjuryor propertydamageuseextremecare in handling
gasoline.Gasolineis extremelyflammableandthe vaporsareexplosive.
Seriouspersonalinjurycanoccurwhen gasolineisspilledonyourself
or yourclothes,which canignite.Washyourskin andchangeclothes

Neverstorethemachineorfuelcontainerinsidewherethere isan open
flame,sparkor pilotlight(e.g.furnace,water heater,space heater,
clothesdryeretc.).
Allowmachineto coolatleast5minutesbeforestoring.
Training
1 Read,understand,andfollowallinstructionsonthe machineandinthe
manual(s)beforeattemptingto assembleandoperate.Keepthis manualin
asafeplaceforfutureandregularreferenceandfor orderingreplacement
parts.
2. Befamiliarwith allcontrolsandtheir properoperation.Knowhowtostop
themachineanddisengagethemquickly.
3. Neverallowchildrenunder14yearsoldto operatethis machine.Ohildren
14yearsoldandovershouldreadandunderstandthe operationinstruc-
tionsand safetyrulesinthismanualandshouldbetrainedandsupervised
bya parent.
4. Neverallowadultsto operatethismachinewithoutproperinstruction.

Operation
1. Do notputhandsorfeet nearrotatingparts,inthe auger/impellerhousing
orchute assembly.Contactwith therotating partscan amputatehands
andfeet.
2. Theauger/impellercontrolleverisasafetydevice.Neverbypassits
operation.Doingso makesthemachineunsafeandmaycausepersonal
injury.
3. Thecontrolleversmust operateeasilyin both directionsand automatically
returntothe disengagedpositionwhenreleased.
4. Neveroperatewitha missingor damagedchute assembly.Keepall safety
devicesin placeandworking.
5. Neverrunan engineindoorsor in a poorlyventilatedarea. Engineexhaust
containscarbonmonoxide,anodorlessanddeadlygas.
6. Do notoperatemachinewhile underthe influenceofalcoholordrugs.
7. Mufflerand enginebecomehotand cancausea burn. Donottouch.
8. Exerciseextremecautionwhenoperatingon orcrossinggravelsurfaces.
Stayalertforhiddenhazardsortraffic,

10.Planyoursnow-throwingpatterntoavoiddischargetowardswindows,

12.Do notoverloadmachinecapacityby attemptingto clearsnowat toofast
ofa rate.

ofyourfootingand keepafirm holdonthe handles.Walk,neverrun.
14.Disengagepowertothe auger/impellerwhentransportingor notin use.
15.Neveroperatemachineat hightransportspeedson slipperysurfaces.
Lookdownand behindandusecarewhenbackingup.
16.If the machineshouldstarttovibrateabnormally,stopthe engine,
disconnectthesparkplugwireandgroundit againsttheengine.Inspect
thoroughlyfor damage.Repairanydamagebeforestartingand operating.
17.Disengageallcontrolleversandstop enginebeforeyouleavethe operat-
ingposition(behindthe handles).Waituntiltheauger/impellercomes
toacompletestopbeforeuncloggingthechuteassembly,makingany
adjustments,or inspections.
18.Neverputyourhandinthe dischargeor collectoropenings.Alwaysuse
theclean-outtool providedto unclogthedischargeopening.Do notunclog
chuteassemblywhileengineis running.Shutoff engineand remain
behindhandlesuntilallmovingpartshavestoppedbeforeunclogging.
19.Useonlyattachmentsand accessoriesapprovedbythe manufacturer(e.g.
wheelweights,tirechains,cabsetc.).
20.If situationsoccurwhich arenotcoveredin this manual,usecareand
goodjudgment.ContactyourSearsServiceCenterfor assistance.
Maintenance & Storage
1. Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Check theirproperoperationregularly.
Referto the maintenanceand adjustmentsectionsofthis manual.
2. Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspectingmachinedisengageallcontrol
leversandstoptheengine.Waituntiltheauger/impellercometo a
completestop.Disconnectthe sparkplugwireand groundagainstthe
enginetopreventunintendedstarting.
3. Checkboltsandscrewsforpropertightnessatfrequentintervalstokeep
the machinein safeworkingcondition.Also,visuallyinspectmachinefor
anydamage.
4. Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingor over-speedtheengine.The
governorcontrolsthe maximumsafeoperatingspeedofthe engine.
5. Snowthrowershaveplatesandskid shoesaresubjectto wearand
damage.Foryoursafetyprotection,frequentlycheckallcomponentsand
replacewithoriginalequipmentmanufacturer's(OEM)partsonly."Useof
partswhich donotmeetthe originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto
improperperformanceand compromisesafety!"
6. Checkcontrolsperiodicallytoverifythey engageanddisengageproperly
and adjust,if necessary.Refertothe adjustmentsectionin this operator's
manualfor instructions.
7. Maintainor replacesafetyand instructionlabels,asnecessary.
8. Observeproperdisposallawsand regulationsfor gas, oil,etc.to protect
the environment.
9. Priortostoring,runmachineafew minutestoclear snowfrommachine
andpreventfreezeup ofauger/impeller.
10.Neverstorethe machineorfuelcontainerinsidewherethere isanopen
flame,sparkor pilotlightsuchasa waterheater,furnace,clothesdryer
etc.
11.Alwaysrefertothe operator'smanualfor properinstructionsonoff-season
storage.
Do not modify engine
Toavoidseriousinjury'or death,do notmodifyenginein anyway.Tampering
withthe governorsettingcanleadto arunaway'engineandcauseitto operate
at unsafespeeds.Nevertamperwithfactorysettingofenginegovernor.
Notice regarding Emissions
Engineswhicharecertifiedtocomplywith CaliforniaandfederalEPAemission
regulationsfor SORE(SmallOffRoadEquipment)arecertifiedtooperateon
regularunleadedgasoline,and may'includethefollowingemissioncontrolsys-
tems:EngineModification(EM)andThreeWayCatalyst(TWC)if so equipped.
Engine identification Decal
Thisdecalindicatestheengine'smodelnumber,specificationandthe dateof
manufacture.Pleaselookatthe decalontheengineofyourequipmentand
recordtheseinformationforfuturereference.
Theengineidentificationdecalalsoincludesenginelifespecificationsforthe
emissions-relatedusefullifeperiodofthe engine.This periodrelatestothe
emissioncompliancelifeas certifiedbyEPAand/orCARB.Tofindthe lifeperiod
specificationofthe engine,pleasereadthe enginedecalandlocatethe letter
(enclosedbyquotationmarks)betweenthewordsModerateandLifePeriod.
Matchone ofthefollowingletterswiththeletterprintedonyourdecal.For
example,HMSK80 modelsaredesignatedas:

Removing From Carton
1, Cutthecornersofthecartonandlaythesidesflaton theground,
Removeall packinginserts,
2, Theupperhandleispackagedunattachedtothesnowthrower,
thoughconnectedbycanes, Movethesnowthrowerandupper
handleoutofthecarton,
3, Makecertainthecartonhasbeencompletelyemptiedbefore
discardingit,
Before Assembly

itagainstthe engineto prevent unintendedstarting.

Setting Up The HandJe
1, Removecane tiesecuringupperhandletolowerhandlefor
shippingpurposes,Removeallprotectiveplasticwrappingfrom
handlesasshownin Figure1,
NOTE: BecarefulNOTto removethethreelooselyfittedcane ties
thatwillbeutilizedlatertosecurecanes,
2, Loosenandremovethewingknob,saddlewasher,handletaband
carriagescrewoneachsideofthelowerhandle,SeeFigure2,
3, Slideoneofthelooselyfittedcane tiesfromtherightsideofthe
lowerhandleuptothecrossmemberofthelowerhandle,Leave
thesecondcane tiein placeontherightsideofthelowerhandle,

1. Adiustskidshoesbylooseningtwohexnutsandcarriageboltsoneach
skidshoe,andmovingskidshoetothedesiredposition.SeeFigure5.
2. Makecertaintheentirebottomsurfaceofskidshoeisagainstthe
groundtoavoidunevenwearon theskid shoes.
3. Tightennutsandboltssecurely.
C ean-Out TooR
Thistoolhasbeenfastenedwitha cabletietotherearoftheaugerhousing
forshippingpurposes.Cutandremovecabletieasinstructedonpage3.
FinaH Adjustments
IMPORTANT:Checktheadiustmentsasinstructedand makeany
finaladjustmentsnecessarybeforeoperatingtheunit.CheckaIInuts
and boltsfortightness.Failuretofollowtheseinstructionsmaycause
damagetounit.
Tire Pressure (Pneumatic Tires)
Thetiresareover=inflatedforshippingpurposes.Checktirepressure
and reducepressure,ifneeded,tosidewallspecifications.Maintain
equalpressureon bothwheelsofsnowthrower.
WARNING:Ma×imumtire pressure underany
circumstanceis24psi. Equaltire pressureshould be
maintainedatall times. Excessivepressure(over30
psi)whenseating beadsmaycausetire/rim assembly
to burst with force sufficient to causeserious injury.
Auger Contro Test
IMPORTANT:Performthefollowingtestbeforeoperatingthesnow
throwerforthefirsttimeandatthestartofeachwinterseason.
Checktheadiustmentoftheaugercontrolasfollows:
1. Whenaugercontrolisreleasedandin thedisengaged"up"posi=
tion,cableshouldhaveverylittleslack,butshouldNOTbetight.
WARNING:Donot over-tighten the cable. Over-
tightening may preventthe auger from disengaging
and compromise the safety of the snow thrower.
2. ina well=ventilatedarea,startthesnowthrowerengineas in=
structedon page10undertheheadingStartingEngine.Makesure
thethrottleisset intheFASTposition.
3. Whilestandinginoperator'sposition(behindunit)engageauger.
4. Allowaugertoremainengagedforapproximatelyten(10)seconds
beforereleasingtheaugercontrol Repeatthisseveraltimes.
5. Withtheenginerunningin theFASTpositionandtheaugercontrol
inthedisengaged"up"position,walktothefrontofthemachine.
6. Confirmthattheaugerhascompletelystoppedrotatingandshows
NOsignsofmotion.
IMPORTANT:IftheaugershowsANYsignsofrotating,immediatelyreturn
totheoperator'spositionandshutofftheengine.Waitforallmovingparts
tostopbeforereadjustingtheaugercontrolcableasshownonpage13.

Locatedon theundersideof theupperhandle,thedrivecontrolis used
toengage/disengagewheels.Squeezethedrivecontrolagainstthe
upperhandletoengagethewheels;releasetodisengage.
Auger Contro_
Theaugercontrolisadiacenttotheupperhandle.Squeezetheauger
controlagainsttheupperhandletoengagetheaugers;releaseto
disengagetheaugers.
WARNING:Nevermakeadjustments to the chute
assembly unless bothauger and drive controls are
disengaged and the operatorisstanding besidethe
unit.
IMPORTANT:RefertoAugerControlTeston page7 priorto operating
yoursnowthrower.Readandfollowall instructionscarefullyand
performalladiustmentstoverifyyoursnowthrowerisoperatingsafely
andproperly.
Chute HandJe
Thedirectionofsnowthrowingcorrespondstothedirectionofthe
chuteopening.Usethechutehandletoturnthechuteassemblyin the
directionyouwishtothrowthesnow.
Chute Knob
Thedistancesnowisthrowncanbeadiustedbyeitherraisingor
loweringtheupperchute.Loosenthechuteknobonthesideofthe
upperchutetoadiust.Pivottheupperchutetodesiredposition,and
retightenthechuteknob.
Speed Selection Lever
Yoursnowthrowerisequippedwitha 3-speedpowerpropelleddrive
system. Thespeediscontrolledbythisspeedselectionlever,located
on theleftsideoftheupperhandle.Threespeedsare provided.
Withtheleverallthewaydown,towardstheengine,speed1isyour
slowestspeed.
iMPORTANT:Toshiftgears,theunitmustbe runningand thedrive
controlmustbereleased.
Shave P_ate
Theshaveplatemaintainscontactwithpavementasthesnow
throwerispropelled,allowingsnowclosetopavement'ssurfacetobe
discharged.
Skid Shoe
Thespacebetweentheshaveplateandthegroundcanbe adiusted.
Forclosesnowremoval,placeskidshoesin thelowposition.Use
middleor highpositionwhenareato beclearedisunevenor on gravel
surfaces.

wheelsstopturningwhiletryingtodischargelargevolumesofsnow,
immediatelydisengagethedrivecontrolandallowtherotatingaugers

8. Oneachsucceedingpass,readiustthechuteassemblytothe
desiredpositionandslightlyoverlapthepreviouslyclearedpath.
