1.1 Introduction
This manual contains information necessary for setup
and installation of the IQ-PIP USP2 Adapter into
non-PIP2TM-compatible Crown®power amplifiers. It
is designed to be used in conjunction with the IQ-PIP
USP2 Reference Manual.
NOTE: THE INFORMATION IN THIS MANUAL
IS INTENDED FOR USE BY AN EXPERIENCED
TECHNICIAN ONLY!
NOTE: REMOVING THE COVERS OF THE AMPLI-
FIER VOIDS ALL AGENCY APPROVAL RATINGS.
1.2 The IQ-PIP USP2 Adapter
The IQ-PIP USP2 Adapter allows many older Crown
PIPTM-compatible amplifiers (i.e., Macro-Tech®00
Series, Com-Tech®00 Series, and Studio Reference
Series amplifiers) to access the power and versatility
of the Crown IQ-PIP-USP2 module. The IQ-PIP-USP2
Adapter can be installed into the following amplifier
models:
*Important: Some of the first generation Com-Tech
Series and Macro Reference amplifiers have soldered
16-pin ribbon and 5-pin signal cable connections,
rather than the modular type described in Section
3.3. Installation instructions for those older models
are not available.
**Important: Some newer Macro-Tech MA-5000VZ
amplifiers are already PIP2-compatible and can
accept the IQ-PIP-USP2 directly. Older MA-5000VZ
amplifiers are not PIP2-compatible. Those amplifiers
have soldered 16-pin ribbon and 5-pin signal cable
connections, rather than the modular type described
in Section 3.3. Installation instructions for those older
models are not available.

Important: The IQ-PIP-USP2 Adapter is designed
for use with the IQ-PIP-USP2 module only, and will
NOT work with the IQ-PIP-USP2/CN or any other
PIP module.
By far the most cost-effective module in terms of
features and performance for the money, the IQ-PIP-
USP2 offers an extensive list of features, including
output signal delay for precise signal matching,
auto standby for reduced energy costs, plus eight
independent, fully adjustable filters per channel,
configurable as crossovers, parametrics, shelves,
or roll-off with parametric boost. The IQ-PIP-USP2
also provides on-screen error reporting of high
temperature and excessive distortion, and an AUX
port for external device control.
Important: Some features of the IQ-PIP-USP2 are
not available when using the IQ-PIP-USP2 Adapter.
Also, the IQ-PIP-USP2 Adapter is identified differently
within IQ for Windows software. See Section 4 for
details.
1.3 Warranty
The IQ-PIP-USP2 Adapter includes a 90-day parts
and labor warranty.
Each amplifier Reference Manual contains basic
policies as related to the customer. In addition, it
should be stated that this service documentation is
meant to be used only by properly trained personnel.
All warranty service should be referred to the Crown
Factory or Authorized Warranty Service Center.

3 Installation
3.1 General Information
Before beginning, please carefully note: CAUTION:
STATIC ELECTRICITY MAY DAMAGE THE IQ-PIP
USP2 ADAPTER and/or the IQ-PIP USP2 MODULE.
Use caution when handling these units. Carefully
ground yourself BEFORE touching the modules. Don’t
unnecessarily touch the connectors, components or
solder pads on the circuit boards.
3.2 Prepare the Adapter
1. Set the Amp Scaling Factor DIP Switches. The
Amp Scaling Factor DIP Switches are located
near the right edge of the circuit board (see
Figure 2.1). To allow the PIP1 amplifier to be
scaled for universal operation, these switches
must be configured according to the amplifier
type. To determine the proper setting, refer to the
DIP Switch Settings Key located on the circuit
board, or to the complete chart in Figure 3.1.
Turn “ON” the switches in each bank as indicated
on the DIP Switch Settings Key. An example DIP
switch setting, as configured for CT 70V amplifier
operation, is shown in Figure 3.2.
3.3 Prepare the Amplifier
CAUTION: Make sure the power switch on the
front of the amplifier is turned off and the unit is
disconnected from its power source.
Please Note: Some first-generation CT models
require a different procedure for installing the IQ-
PIP-USP2 Adapter. Also, some newer MA-5000VZ
amplifiers are already PIP2-compatible and do not
require the adapter for use with the IQ-PIP-USP2
module. Older MA-5000VZ amplifiers are not PIP2-
compatible, but require a different procedure for
installing the IQ-PIP-USP2 Adapter. See Section 1.2
for more information.
Refer to Figure 3.3 for locations of the parts described
in this procedure.
1. Remove the cover of the amplifier. Locate the
cover of the amplifier closest to the PIP cage
and remove the ten (10) screws securing the
cover. This will allow you to gain access to the
PIP cage. You will need a T15-size Torx driver to
remove the screws.
2. Remove the PIP module. Remove any previously
installed PIP card by unscrewing the two Phillips
drive screws from the back panel that secure the
PIP module in the amplifier.
3. Remove the cable ties. Cable ties secure
both the 16-pin PIP connector cable and the
5-pin signal connector. Snip each cable tie and
remove.
4. Remove the edge card connector. The edge
card connector is held by two screws which have
been secured with a strong adhesive. To remove,
you may need to use channel locks, vise grips
or adjustable pliers. CAUTION: To ensure safe
operation of the amplifier, any parts of this
assembly that are accidentally dropped in
the amplifier must be retrieved. Replacement
mounting assembly pieces are provided in case
of assembly parts damage.
5. Remove the 16-pin PIP1 connector cable. Take
care when removing this 16-pin ribbon cable to
ensure no pins are bent.
6. Remove the 5-pin signal cable.
