General Description
The PATCO Electronics PE-BT-03 Battery Tester /
Analyzer is a tool used to test and analyze the Land
Warrior (LW, LWH, LI, UBBL03, UBBL12, UBBL06,
UBBL06-01, UBBL08, BT-70867BE and BT-70868BK)
rechargeable lithium ion battery.
The PATCO PE-BT-03 can be used in preventive
maintenance programs, pre-deployment checks,
system testing, and general fault analysis. Data is
displayed to the user by LED indicators and a two line
LCD.
The PATCO PE-BT-03 is powered from an internal 9V
battery (alkaline or lithium), or supplied Wall Bug.
Function Description
The PATCO Electronics PE-BT-03 performs a low rate
charge test, a low rate discharge test, and reads
internal battery data, from the SMBus, to determine
the functional state of a battery under test. If a
battery accepts charge, discharges, verifies SMBus
communication and has not lost too much capacity
over time, a pass condition will be displayed. The
PATCO PE-BT-03 also gives the user the ability to read
Smart Battery Data (SBD) over the SMBus including
voltage, state of charge, temperature, cycle count, and
full charge capacity.
Limitation of Tester/Analyzer
Due to the time and current limitation of the charge
and discharge tester function, the tester will
occasionally pass a bad battery. Certain battery failure
modes are only detectable by conducting a full charge
and discharge cycle.
Note: Throughout this document the abbreviation SBD
is used to refer to Smart Battery Data. For more
information refer to Smart battery Data Specification

Operational Functionality
1. Connect battery to tester with docking station or cable, see the
section Connecting to Batteries.
2. Press ON button until startup screen displays PATCO (figure 1).
3. Press and release TEST button. During the test cycle, Testing
will be displayed (figure 2) for the charge capability, discharge
capability and SMBus communication capability. After
approximately 12 seconds, testing will be complete and the
screen will display either PASS SOC (figure 3) or FAIL (figure 4)
on the top LCD line and illuminate the green pass LED indicator
or red fail LED indicator.
4. The tester will return to IDLE and turn off after 30 seconds if
not used.
Note: During the charge portion of the test, if the 9V battery to the
tester drops below 5 volts, the test will exit without completing and
the Replace 9V Battery LED indicator will illuminate.
PASS Indication
The top line displays PASS, and the second line displays the state of
charge (figure 3).
Fail Indication
The top line displays FAIL (figure 4), and the second line displays the
fail code. See Table 1, Fail Codes.

Reading Smart Battery Data (SBD)
Note: This operation can be performed immediately
following the completion of Test Sequence 1, or performed
independently. If immediately following Test Sequence 1,
proceed to step 3 below.
1. Connect battery to tester via the docking station
or cable, see section Connecting to Batteries.
2. Press ON button until startup screen displays
PATCO (figure 1).
3. Press and release DATA button. During
communication with the battery, Reading Data
will be displayed. The tester will then cycle
through SBD, displaying the data as shown in
Figure 5 through Figure 7. See Table 2, SMBus
Data Codes.Use the up (↑) and down (↓) arrows
to cycle between screens.
4. The tester will return to IDLE and turn off after 30
seconds, if not used.

Connecting to Batteries
Batteries can be connected to the PATCO PE-BT-03
tester/analyzer by using the docking station with cable, or
without docking station if battery has the LEMO type
connector, or with an optional LEMO to Glenair cable
adapter if battery has the Glenair type connector.
Note: The LEMO to LEMO connector is used to connect the
tester/analyzer to the testing docking station.
Handling
The PATCO PE-BT-03 battery tester and docking station
needs certain considerations when handling or in use. Do
not expose it to moisture, water, sand, dirt or rough
handling. If the inside of the tester docking module
becomes dirty, clean with a pressurized air can.
Optional cable to connect PE-BT-03 directly to a
battery with a Glenair type connector.
