Welcome to the C3Data Logger:
This system is designed to read and log temperatures in hot or cold environ-
ments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The C3Data Logger can operate in
temperatures running from -67° to 257° Fahrenheit (–55° to 125° Celsius) in
one or more coolers, chillers and/or freezers.
The C3Data Logger is ideal for businesses which are required to monitor and
record temperatures for product quality assurance. The C3Data Logger can
simultaneously monitor & record up to 20 different zones. Each recorded zone
can be set to different upper and lower alarm limits. The computer will produce
an audible and visual alarm if the temperature in any zone goes outside the set
limits. The Enhanced software is an extra feature. Please contact your sup-
plier for an upgrade which would allow for remote call out alarm systems.
Warning
The program was designed to enhance your current tem-
perature data logging system. The C3Data Logger software
which allows for remote alarm notification should not be
used as your only source of equipment failure notifica-
tion. Should the C3Data Logger system fail for any reason,
you must return to manually recording temperatures in
all your zones until repairs have been completed.

Installing the Temperature Sensors:
The package you received has several water resistant plastic elec-
trical boxes. Find the box labeled ’Computer Interface’ on the face
plate. Place this box beside your computer and plug the connected
cable into the C3Data Logger interface supplied. We have sup-
plied an extension cable, if the C3Data Logger will not fit into the
serial port on the back of your com-
puter. For each monitoring Zone at-
tach one of the remaining boxes out-
side of the freezer, chiller, cooler, dis-
play counter etc.
***Be sure to use the box la-
beled MASTER, since it con-
tains the master temperature sensor.***
Using category 5, 5E or 6 networking cable (not sup-
plied), make a single and continuous run from the
“Computer Interface” box to each of the zones. Run from
one box to the next, and then on to the next, until the ca-
ble is at the last box. Leave enough slack in the cable at each box to do some wiring
(approx. 6” to 10”). Once you have reached the last box you may cut the cable, leaving
a couple of feet extra, just in case.

Install the cable at each box using the following procedures:.
1) Remove the cover plate from the box and you will
see the temperature sensor (Fig. 1) pre-wired to a
terminal strip.
2) Loosen the plastic nut and rubber compression
fitting on the box (Fig. 2).
3) Cut the cable as shown in (Fig. 3). Remove the outer
covering back 1” from the end of the cable. Cut off all
the exposed wires except the Blue, Blue-White and
Orange.
4) Pass the wires through the plastic nut into the
box leaving the compression nut loose at this time
(Fig. 4).
5) Bare about ¼ inch of insulation
on each of the Blue, Blue-White &
Orange wires, from each cable (Fig.

6) Loosen the screws on the terminal block the
ones with no wires on them already). Match the
colors and connect the wires to the terminal block.
Each screw should have two wires under it, (i.e. 2
blue-white, 2 blue, 2 orange). The end result
should look like (Fig. 6).
7) Tighten the plastic nut which will compress the
rubber fitting and hold the cable securely (Fig. 7).
8) Re-attach the cover plate to the box, Repeat these steps
with all the Temperature Sensors in all the zones (Fig. 8).

The first step in getting the C3Data Logger up and going is to first install the
software. Please insert C3 CD into the CD Rom. The installation should
automatically begin, if not then you must start it manually by clicking on Start and
Run. In the text box type in X:\Setup where Xis the drive letter corresponding to
the CD Rom Drive.
Once executed the following screens will appear. The user must accept the Welcome
introduction by clicking on the next button.
Please read the License agreement and select
I agree if you fully understand and agree with
the terms and conditions.
Please enter in the user name and company
in the following fields. It is recommended
that you check off the “Anyone who uses this
computer (all users)” option, so that the
program will be always be available on this
PC.

It is always recommended that you select
TypicalInstallation so that all the
required components and files are
installed to get the maximum
performance.
Make sure that you have successfully
completed all the previous entries. Once
you click on the Install button, all data
will be written to the registry.
When the program installation is completed, the following dialog box should
appear. Click on Finish to complete.

When you first execute the C3Data Logger, a windows will appear asking for
the Product Key. The Product Key can be found on the Computer Interface
box.
***The Product Key refers to the Master Sensor. You must
have installed the Master Sensor in order for the program
to function. ***
If something were to happen to the Master Sensor, you must contact your sup-
plier for a replacement along with a new Product Key.
Once you have received your new sensor interface box, please replace the de-
fective unit with the new one and re-connect all wires. Start up the C3Data
Logger, enter in the new Product Key and you are back in business.

In order for the computer to communicate with the temperature sensors, you
must first set up the communications properties. The most common settings
are the program defaults. In some situations a mouse might be connected to
Com Port 1, in this case you would need to set the program to Com Port 2.
Older PCs might have a modem connected to Com2. If this is the case along
with a mouse on Com1, then you need to install a Serial Communications Card.
Have your computer technician install the card and configure it.
It is recommended that your C3Data Logger is connected to either Com1 or
Com2.
*** If any options are changed, the program must be shut down and re-
started in order for the settings to take effect. ***

This section of the C3Data Logger Software allows the user to enter in infor-
mation about the company such as name, address & phone number. It also
contains the master password where the user can at any time change it. Due to
the fact that the password is part of a security function, the user must first enter
in the current password before the system will allow him/her access.
When one wishes to gain access to this section, the following box will appear.
At this point the user must enter in the password and then on OK. If the correct
password was not entered, a message will appear in the text box below the
command buttons. Select the Cancel option will return the user back to the
Main Screen.
Once you have successfully log into the system, then you can continue on with
the Company Information and Settings.
At the time of the first initial installation, the password is C3Logger.

Throughout the program the computer will constantly be displaying information
about the company that is currently using the C3Data Logger Software.
Whatever information is entered into the Company Information is what will be
displayed. The information entered here should be as accurate as possible as it
what will used when you register your product with DDB Data Systems Inc.
As explained on the previous page, the password box below is what is used to
gain access to the secured sections of the program and to also shut it down.
Due to the fact that the PC running the Data Logger Program might be accessi-
ble to several individuals, it is very easy and common for one of them to inten-
tionally or accidentally shut the down a program and forget to re-activate it. By
implementing the security option on shut down, a password must successfully
be entered. This also helps the individual realize the he/she accidentally click
on the close program option instead of minimize.

Once the program is executed, the computer will only monitor the number of
zones that are specified in the Default Settings window. The total number of
Monitoring Zones must equal the number of temperature sensors installed.
The program comes with an audible alert that might at times become quite an-
noying. This can be disabled and still maintain alarm functionality by checking
off the Disable Audible Alarm option below.
You may want to read the sensors more often than you record the data. For Ex-
ample, If you are required to log the temperatures once every 3 hours, the pro-
gram can still read the sensors every 30 minutes. This is done to catch tem-
peratures that are outside alarm limits before any damage can be done.
All temperature sensors will be read at the interval entered in the Read Monitors
section. The recommended minimum time is 10 minutes. Enter in the desired
hours and/or minutes in the appropriate boxes next to “Record Temperatures”.
This will set the time for recording the data into the database. If you wish to re-
cord your data in Celsius, click on the circle by Celsius, otherwise choose Fahr-
enheit for data logging.

Email Settings
One of the options in the Alarm Notification is Email. This will allow one or sev-
eral recipients to receive an Email when ever the temperature in one or several
zones fall out of their set limits. When we are setting up configurations through
the internet, there are usually several different types of setups and due to the
numerous options to the end-user, the system must also contain different types
of setups.
The two most common Email programs are Outlook Express and Microsoft Out-
look. Any one of these requires a valid Email account already configured on the
Data Logger PC. In cases where the Data Logger PC does not contain an
Email account, you can instruct the program to deliver the Email through an
SMTP service. This basically the companies internet providers SMTP address
and Email address.
The computer can automatically dial up to the internet to send the Email. This
is helpful in situations where the Data Logger PC does not have a constant con-
nection to the internet. If the user does not wish to internet to remain connected
after the Email has been sent then they should setup an idle time. Please con-
sult your modem configuration for this information.
It is recommended that for reliable Email delivery, you have the PC
on a constant internet connection.

At the time of installation the C3Data Logger Software has no idea which
Temperature Sensors are installed and in which rooms. This procedure will
force to send out a read command that will gather all the Temperature Sensors
on the line and display them on the screen.
To activate the Temperature Sensor Installation simply click on the “Read” but-
ton at the bottom of the module. Once completed the computer will search the
database to see if any of the sensors are currently assigned to a zone and will
display its information as well.
You must at this point assign all temperature sensors to a zone along with a
brief and unique description. Whatever information is entered here is what will
appear on the “Main Monitoring Screen” and on all reports. Once all informa-
tion has been entered, click on the “save” button. Once you exit this module,
the computer will refresh the main screen with the saved in the database. Any
remaining zones that were not found on the read, will be removed from the sys-
tem.
***It is very important that sensors are assigned prop-
erly . If the sensors are assigned improperly, they will
not match the zone listed on the ‘Main Monitoring Screen’
or on the reports. Be careful, be sure, check and verify!***

The zone configuration windows will allow you to set your alarm limits & enable/
disable each sensor. The Information that was entered in the Sensor Installation
will be presented as is shown below. From here, the user can then set the
High/Low Alarm and the recording option. At any time the user has the ability of
disabling any of the functions by removing the check mark in any of the corre-
sponding boxes.
During regular calibration you may find that a sensor is no longer displaying the
correct temperature. If thedifference is a small amount, make the necessary
calibration adjustment in so that final reading is correct. Enter under theCali-
bration Adjustment column the amount (positive / negative) to add to the sen-
sor reading. Every time the computer collects the readings from the sensors, it
will add or subtract the value in the Calibration Adj. field for that sensor. The fi-
nal reading you see on the screen and printouts will match the actual tempera-
ture of the zone.
By default and if installed the computer automatically assigns each Led on the
Alarm Panel with the corresponding Zone as seen above. This can be modified
at any time by changing the Alarm Led # in the last column with the new value.
This gives the user the ability to assign multiple zones per Led.
***The calibration adjustment should only be used on small temperature adjust-
ments. If the reading of any sensor exceeds 5°then that sensor should be re-
placed as soon as possible.***

The screen shown below is what you should see running on your computer at
all times. The main monitoring window lists all monitoring zones along with their
description and current temperature. As you can see from the picture below,
the Zones (1,2,4, & 5) have a white background. This tells the user that the
temperatures are within the user prescribed alarm limits.
If the temperature in any one of the zones rises above or falls below the high /
low alarm temperature then the background on that zone will turn red and an
alarm will sound. As is the case in Zone 3 in the above picture.
If the user is aware of the alarm and wishes to temporarily disable it, they must
double click on the appropriate Zone in the Alarm Settings window and then
check the Disable box on the bottom of the screen under Alarm Settings. The
alarm can be disabled for up to 48 hours, at which time it will return to the nor-
mal alarm settings.
***Please note that by disabling an alarm, you are turning off all
recording, alarm functions and notifications for that Zone.***

The EnhancedC3 Data Logger has the ability of remote alarm notification us-
ing several different types of communications such as alphanumeric Paging,
Text Messaging to a Cell Phone or Emailing. This feature can be activated by
selecting any one of the options from the drop down list in the notify column.
And checking off the option box in the first column. Depending on your notifica-
tion type selected, the recipient can be either the persons name that will be re-
ceiving the alert (Pager, Mobile) or their email address (Email). You can set
how often the computer will send out a notification by entering a value in the
Retry box along with the number of minutes to wait between each call.
When setting up the type of Alarm Message to be delivered to the recipient it is
very important that you become familiar with the communication settings each
uses throughout their network. As seen from above, there are several factors
that come into play when setting up the notifications. The following page will
break down these factors accordingly to category.

Email Notification:
The settings entered under Email Settings in the Company Information and
Settings Module is what will be used for the communications settings. What-
ever information is entered here will be the used during the notification. The in-
formation below the grid does not apply here.
Pager Notification:
The feature has the ability of sending out an alphanumeric message to a recipi-
ent equipped with a pager.
Mobile Notification:
Due that advanced technology, the Data Logger PC can send out a text mes-
sage to anybody equipped with a text message capable mobile device.
Send Options:
Specifies how the message is to be deliveredto the recipient:
1> Service Provider: In Many cases this would be the most common
method of transmitting the messages. It uses providers such as Bell
Mobility, Telus, Nextel and Paging Companies as a provider. With
this option, the user must select the appropriate Provider, enter in
their Access Number, Password (If required) , Protocol along with
number of the electronic device of the Recipient.
2> GSM Phone or SMS Device: This gives you the ability of transmit
ting the message by connecting an external communication device
such as a GSM/SMS phone. If this method is chosen then you need
to worry about only the Recipient #Number and the number of the
device used to send the message (Sender #).
Device Options:
Indicates to the PC which internal device of the PC will be used to deliver the
message. From the drop down box you can choose from one of the many op-
tions available. If you are planning on sending your message electronically
through the phone lines, then you should make sure that you have an internal
modem installed. In this case one with a low speed such as 9600 baud rate is
adequate. Other ways are through your serial ports to an external device.
The remanding options are the communication settings the device uses. You
should always contact the company and ask them for these settings and/or look
up the specs of the external communicator. The most frequently settings pro-
viders use are a communication device such as a modem, Data Bits=7, Par-
ity=Even, Stop Bits=1 and Speed=2400.
