INTRODUCTION
The Model 680isaprogrammable,announce-only,
telephoneansweringmachinethatusesdigital technol-
ogy
to
store and play messages. The Model 680 can
answer calls from, and play announce messages to,
threetelephonelinessimultaneously.Theunithasthree
modular plugs for the telephone lineconnections.
Since the unit is programmable, you can tell it
exactly when
to
answer calls. The program modes,
there are four, let you pick the days, times, and an-
nouncements you want to use. You can record your
announcements, up
to
four, with the unit's hand mi-
crophone.
The Model 680 also has three external jacks. You
canconnectacasssetterecorder,externalmusicsource
or a
PBX
sytem to thesejacks. If you have acassette
recorder,you cancreateyourmessageswiththerecorder
and then transfer them to the Model 680. You can also
saveyourModel680messages by transferring them
to
acassette. If yourecordmusicwith theModel680,you
can use you unit
as
a
Music-on-hold source for a
PBX
system. (The
PBX
must have a music-on-hold recep-
tacle.)
TheModel680doesnot usecassettetapesforstoring
announcements.Instead,itusesinternalmemory,RAM,
as the storage medium. The unit can record up
to
64
secondsworth of announcements. You can expand the
record time to 128, 192, or 320 seconds by adding
optional memory modules.
The unit also incorporates a digital display. The
display performs a variety of functions.In addition to
showingthecurrentdayandtime,thedisplayalsoshows
the status of each programming mode, the number of
calls received for each line, the correct audio level
during record, the number of times a message will
replay, and the number of rings the unit will answer a
callon. The unit uses
a
24-hourformat
(00:00
to 23:59)

This heading explains how the various programming
modes operate. Once you understandhow they work,
you will be able

setup a program that meets your
requirements.

START
Naturally, you probably would like to
have your unit answeringcalls as soon
as
possible,preferably right after installa-
tion. The whole idea of the Quick Start
procedure is to give you enough informa-
tion to get you going. After you have the
unit up and running, take time to read
about the unit's other programming
features. You can switch to any of these
featuresat any time.

The Quick Startprocedure uses the
Day program. (Your unit has four
program modes: Week, Special,Day, and
Music.) Onceactivated,the Day
program automaticallyanswers your
calls and plays
an
announcemessage. It
will continueto answer calls until you
turn it off. Basically, you should turn the
Day program on when you leave the
office. You can turn it off when you
return. Of course, you can turn the
program on or off at whatever time suits
your schedule. Thefollowing headings
represent theQuick Startprocedure.
Make sureyou perform all of the
operations presented here.
INSTALLATION
1. Plug the unit's power cord into a
grounded

outlet.
2. Connectyour telephonelines to the
unit's modularjacks. Thereare three
jacks located at the rear of unit.
SETTING THE CLOCK
Locate the numeric keypad.
To set the clock

1. Press

Select the currentday. (For Sunday

4. Enter the time with the numeric
keypad. Use a 24-hour format

PROGRAMMING MODES
The unit has four programming
modes: Week, Special,Day and Music.
The Week program sets the unit's
weekly schedulefor answeringtelephone
calls. Use this program to tell the unit on
what daysand times to play announce-
ments
l,2,
and 3.
The Specialprogram letsyou pick a
messagethat you can play at special
times. You can pick one message (l,2,3,
or4), and you can specify the time and
day,or days,you want it to play.
The Day program answersall calls
twenty-four hours a day. This program
lets you pick oneannouncement(l,2,3,
or4)
to
play
to
callers.
TheMusic program is designedfor
use with PBX systemsthat have a music
on hold feature. You can record music
with your unit and then play it back to a
PBX system. ThePBX system and the
Model
680
connect through an interface
cable. ThePBX system must have ajack
that will accept the cabling.
Thefollowing presents each of the
programmingprocedures. If you are a
first-timeuser, look over

TheDay program is useful for
broadcastingthe samemessage continu-
ously.For instance,the Day program can
announcemovie listings or convention
agendas.You can also use this program
for specialoccasions.'1f you periodically
leave the office during the day, you can
select the Day program to play a message
while you areout. When you return, you
can cancel theprogram.
The Music program is designed for
use with PBX systemsthat have music on
hold. Your unit can record music through
the Aux. inputjack. It can alsoplay
music to aPBX system through
its
Mon.
jack. (The Aux. and Mon. jacks
are
at the
rear of the unit.) If your PBX system has
an input receptacle for music on hold,
you can connect it to the Mon. inputat
the rear of the unit.
Music plays continuouslywhen you
activatethe Music program. If you record
64
secondsof music, then every
64
secondsthe music will recycle. The
music will continueto play until you
cancel the automatic answering mode for
music.
