leít front door hinge pillar post.
ENGINEIDENTIFICATIONEngines may be identified by
engine numbers according to the following prefixes:
Super Red Ram V-8, P-36; Ram Fire V-8, P-38; D-500
Ram Induction 361 V-8, P-36; D-500 Ram Induction 383
V-8, P-38; Economy Slant "6". P-22—numbers of these
engines are stamped in position "A" shown at right. Red
Ram V-8 prefix P-318—number stamped in position "B"
shown at right.
BODYNUMBERLOCATIONThe body number is stamped
on a plate which is attached to the left or right side of
the engine side of the dash, or on front of radiator yoke.

yourDodgeDarthasgone1,000miles.Ifnecessary
tomaintaina properlevel,(Fig.5)addoilappropriate
tothetemperaturerangeshownonthefollowingchart.
Becauseweatherandroadconditionsvarythrough-
outthecountry,itisbesttoconsultyourlocalDodge
dealrastohowoftenyoushouldchangeoil.Your
particulardrivingrequirementswillalsodetermine
howoftenoilshouldbechanged.Ingeneral,oilshould
bechangedevery2,000miles.However,yourparticu-
lardrivingrequirementsmaypermitextendedoil
changeperiods;whereas,shorttripoperationandcold
weatherorextremelydustyconditionsmayrequireoil
changesmoroften.Followtherecommendationofyour
Dodgedealer.

3.OILFILTER(Figs.6 and7)
Theoilfiltercartridgeshouldbechangedevery
4,000milestocoincidewithanengineoilchangeas
follows:
Unscrewfiltercartridgefrombaseanddiscard(8
cylinderengine).Wipebasecleanandscrewa new
filtercartridgeonthebaseuntilgasketonfiltercon-
tactsbase.Tightenatleast½ turnormorewithstrap
wrench.Runengineandcheckforoilleaks.Addoil
to"Full"mark.Whencarisdrivenindustyareas,
morefrequentreplacementofthecartridgemaybe
necessary.On6 cylinderengines,removethefilter
coveranddiscardthereplaceableelement.Whenin-
stallingthecover,usea newgasket.
4.OILFILLERPIPECLEANER(Fig.8)
Washtheaircleanerinkeroseneevery 5,000 miles
andre-oilwithSAE50engineoil.UseSAE40ifSAE
50isnotavailable.Serviceaircleanermorefrequent-
lyifcarisoperatedinextremelydustyarea.

to ten drops of ligthengineoilevery1,000miles. The
camwick andcam should be lubricatedevery11,000
miles. Puttwoor threedrops of lightengine oilon
wick.Applycamlubricanttobumperblock on contact
arm.
7.CARBURETOR AIR CLEANER
(Figs. 11 and12)
Cleanelementevery 5,000 miles by blowingoutwith
airpressure.Heldairnozzleapproximately3
inchesawayfromtheelement.Replaceelement

8.FRONTSUSPENSIONBALLJOINTS

Fourfittings, one on eachballjoint.Lubricateevery
1,000mileswithChassisLubricant.Lift thecaratthe
outerends ofthe lowercontrolarms,leavingenough
room for a greaseguntobeused at thelowerballjoint
lubricantfitting.CAUTION: Donot lift thecar
at the framefrontcrossmembersincethis
will not unload the balljoints.
Unloadballjoints by using a two-pedestalhoistwith
thearmsextended, orby liftingwithjacksplaced un-
der the lowercontrolarms. Asthecaris lifted, the
lowerballjointwill be unloaded andthe upper con-
trol arm (rebound)bumperwillmoveawayfrom its
"stop" on the frame.
ApplyChassisLubricantgenerouslytoflush outthe
oldlubricantfromboththeupperandlowerballjoints.
Greaseshouldflush out completelyaround the lower
balljointandfromoneside of theupperballjointseal.
Theupperballjoints are pre-loaded and cannot be
unloaded to reducetherestriction to lubricantflow. At
thetime the grease is beingapplied,turn the front
wheelsfromside to side a number of times to help
work the lubricantinto the balljointsocket.

Removefillerplugshown in Figure 15and check
levelevery1,000miles.Replenishtolevel of fillerhole
withMulti-PurposeGearLubricant (or lubricantdesig-
nated for "APIServiceGL-4"),SAE 80for tempera-
turesabove— 10°F., or SAE75 for temperaturesbe-
low— 10°F. In warmterritorieswhereSAE 80isnot
available,SAE90may be used.Drainandrefillwith
Multi-PurposeGearLubricantevery21,000miles.Keep
level to bottom of fillerhole.
14. TORQUEFLITE,POWERFLITE
TRANSMISSIONS AND TORQUEFLITE

It is preferablethatthefluidlevelbecheckedwhen
temperatureindicator(ondash)showsthattheengine
is at normaloperatingtemperature.Thisalsoindicates
normalwarmtemperature of fluid in thetransmission.
Maintainfluid at properlevel.
Withparkingbrake"On"andengineidling,depress
eachpushbuttonmomentarily,endingwith the Neu-
tral (N) buttonpushed in. Whenengine and trans-
mission areat normaloperatingtemperature,fluid

If itis necessarytocheckfluidlevelwhentransmis-
sion is cold,followtheprocedure in preceedingpara-
graph.Fluidlevelshould beatthe "L"(low)mark,
orslightlybelow.Add or removefluid, as necessary,
toobtainproperfluidlevel. To preventdirtfrom
enteringtransmissionaftercheckingfluid
leveland/oraddingfluid,makesurethe
fluidleveldipstickcapisproptrlyseatedon
fillertube.
Draing and Refilling (Fig. 16)
Fornormaldriving in city or onhighway,drainand
refilleverytwoyears or 21,000miles,whichever oc-
cursfirst.Drainandrefillmorefrequently- as oftenas
every10,000miles- if car is usedforPoliceorTaxicab
operation,frequenttowing ofa trailer, oris drivenfre-
quently in heavytrafficduring hot weather, or oper-
atedcontinuously at higherthannormalloading.The
engineshouldnotbeidledforlongperiods
whilethetransmissionisingear.
Draining— Removefillertubefromtransmission
oil panand allowtransmission to drain.Remove fly-
wheelaccessplateandtorqueconverterdrainplug.
Allowtorqueconverter to drain.Replacetorquecon-
verterdrainplugandtransmissionfillertube.
Refilling — Addfivequarts of AutomaticTrans-
missionFluid - Type"A"Suffix"A"throughtransmis-
sionfillertube.Starttheengineandaddapproximate-
lythreemorequartswhileengine is idling.Allow en-
gine to idle for twominutes.Operateallpushbuttons,
pausingmomentarilyineachposition,andendingwith
theNeutral(N)buttonpushedin.Addsufficientfluid

tobringlevel to"L"(low) mark.Keepdirtfrom
enteringtransmissionbymakingsurethedip
stickcapisseatedproperlyonfillertube.
SpecialLow Temperature Recommendation —
PowerFI¡te Transmission Only
Ifdifficultstarting is encounteredwhenaverage
temperaturesconsistentlyrangebelow-10° F., replace
onequart of fluidwithrefinedkerosene.Thisservice
should be performedonlyonceduring thelowtem-
peratureseason.Thereafter, add AutomaticTransmis-
sionFluid- Type"A",whennecessary.
Use of Special Additives
Thefactorydoes not recommendtheaddition of any
fluids to the transmission,otherthanautomaticTrans-
missionFluid - Type "A" Suffix"A".Onlyexceptions
are theuse of refinedkerosene(refer to Special Low
TemperatureRecommendation), and specialdyesused
byservice men in detectingfluidleaks.
15. UNIVERSALJOINTS(CrossandRoller)

Disassemble,clean and repackwithFibrous Uni-
versalJointGrease - Light,every21,000miles.
16. UNIVERSALJOINTS(BallandTrunnion)
(Fig. 18)
Disassemble,clean and repackwithFibrousUniver-
salJointGrease - Medium,every21,000miles. Use 2
ounces of lubricant.
17. REARAXLE(Fig. 19)
Drain and refill to bottom of filler hoi every21,000
mileswithMulti-PurposeGearLubricant, or lubricant
designated for"API ServiceGL·4". UseSAE90for

Every21,000miles,drain and refill to bottom of filler
hole. Do not overfill. To identify car equippedwith

2. BLOWNFUSE
(1) Ifthe fuse is blown,install a newfuse and check
to seeifthe tubes are lighted.
(2) Ifthe tubes donot light up, makecertainthat
voltage is available atthe"A" lead andifitis,orif
the new fuseblows,remove the receiver for major re-
pair.
3.FUSE NOT BLOWN
(1)Check for voltage atthe"A" leadwith a volt-
meter.
(2) If12 volts are available andthe tubes arenot
lighted,remove the receiver fora majorrepair.

(3) If thetubes are lighted,connectthetestantenna
tothereceiverandhold it sothat it protrudesout of and
awayfromthecar.
(4) Ifthe receiveroperates,install a new antenna
andlead-in.Makecertainthat theold antennaconnec-
torwasclean and make a goodconnectionbeforedis-
carding it.
(5) Ifthe antenna isnotat fault,disconnect the
speakerandplug in thetestspeaker.
(6) If thereceiveroperates,replacetheoldspeaker.
(7) If thespeaker is not at fault,removethereceiver
andsubstitute the testtubes for those inthe receiver,
one ata time,allowingenoughtime for eachtube to
heat up beforegoing onto thenext.
(8) Ifthe receiver is stillinoperative, it must bere-
moved fora majorrepair. It willseldom be neces-
sarytoreplacea transistorpoweroutput
stage.Replacementandtestingoftransistors
shouldbelefttoa competentradioservice
man.Afterperformingallofthepreceding
checks,besuretoremoveallpartsusedin
testing.
4.RADIORECEPTION IS WEAK
(1)Whenreception is limited toa few stronglocal
stations,adjust the antennatrimmer to align there-
ceiver tothe antennawithantennafullyextended. If
thereception isnot improved,proceedwith the follow-
ingsteps.Substitute a testantenna,removethereceiver
andsubstitutetesttubes as outlined in Paragraph 3.
5.RADIORECEPTION IS NOISY
ORERRATIC
(1) The cause of noisy or erraticreception canbe
isolated by findingoutwhenthenoiseoccurs.
(2) Ifit occurswhile the vehicle isata standstill
withtheenginenotrunning,thetroublelies in theradio
receiver.
(3) Ifthe noiseoccursonlywhile the vehicle is
standingwith the motorrunning, itis probablycaused
byignition or electricalunits on thevehicle.
(4) Ifthe noiseoccursonlywhile the vehicle isin
motion, itis probablycaused by wheel and tirestatic,
or by intermittentshorting ofthe antenna.
(5)Powerlines,electricroadsigns,etc.,areanother
source of noise.
6.RADIO IS NOISYWITH CAR
STANDINGSTILL-Eng¡neNotRunning
(1)Tune ina localstation, andjarthe side ofthe
receivercasewiththehand.
(2)Makesurethat the connectorplugs are firmly
seated.
¢3) If theconnectorsaresecureandthenoisyrecep-
tioncontinues asthe receiver is jarred,remove there-
ceiver and proceedwith the followingsteps.
(4) Tapthe tubesgentlywith the fingertips,while
holding the tubes inthe socket to eliminatedisturbing
thetubecontacts.
(5) Ifthe receiverbecomesnoisy asany particular
tube is tapped,replacethedefectivetube.
(6) If none ofthe tubes are noisy, a majorrepair is
indicated.
7.RADIO IS NOISYWITH CAR
STANDINGSTILL-Eng¡neRunning
(1)Close and securelylatchhoodbeforechecking
fornoise.
(2)Startengine,turnonradioandtuneto a spotbe-
tweenstations.
(3)Enginenoisewillusuallyappear in radio asa
clickingsoundthatvaries in frequencywithspeed of
engine.
(4) If noise is present,checkvoltageregulator,igni-
tioncoil, and generatorcapacitors for clean,tight con-
nections;alsocheckthatantennalead-incableshield
makesgoodaroundcontact at receiverreceptacle and
thatantennamounting nutis tight.
(5)Check the receivermounting for goodground
contactboth atthe supportbracketmounting and
where the receivercontacts the instrumentpanel.
(6) If noise is stillpresent,substitute the good sup-
pressiontestparts oneata time.Removereceiver for
majorrepairs.
8.RADIO IS NOISYWITH CAR
INMOTION
(1)Turn on radio and check for enginenoise as
described in Paragraph7 above.
(2) If enginenoise is present,correct as outlined.
(3)Retract the antenna and flex it slightly toletit
vibrate.
(4)Move and twist the lead-inslightly.
(5) If noiseoccurswhenthis is done,replace the
antenna.
9. RADIO IS NOISYWHEN CAR
EQUIPMENT IS OPERATED
(1)Whenexcessiveloud"clicks" and "pops" are
heard inthe radio duetothe operation of directional
signals,brakelights,powerseats or powerwindows,
allgroundconnectionstotheradioantennaandlead-in
wireshould be thoroughlychecked.
(2) A poorgroundconnection atany point can pro-
