Introduction 1
This documentation describes how to use the Pronto2K/ProntoHD of
the Pronto disk recorder family manufactured by DVS. The Pronto2K/
ProntoHD is a powerful high definition disk recording system with
enormous flexibility, suitable for any high-end post production appli-
cation. Whether you need to capture uncompressed HD or film data,
process it, color grade it or output it to film, you will find the Pronto2K/
ProntoHD supporting your workflow at every stage.
Based on the Windows operating system the Pronto2K/ProntoHD
stores the material in its native resolution and format in a selectable
file format directly on the connected storage, making pre-conversion
or compression unnecessary. Clips of any resolution (up to 2K), color
space or bit depth can be captured and the final output resolution can
be configured freely as well.
The Pronto2K/ProntoHD provides enough intrinsic power to accept
material from cameras, telecines or VTRs. In a studio environment,
the Pronto2K/ProntoHD connects to HD cameras, enabling the cap-
turing of footage and an immediate viewing afterwards. When inte-
grated into a high-end post workflow, the Pronto2K/ProntoHD can
handle real-time telecine transfers without any effort.
The ProntoHD is the standard version of the Pronto digital disk re-
corders by DVS. It supports all common TV standards from SD up to
2K (at 15 Hz) via single-link HD-SDI or a DVI connection. The
Pronto2K is an enhanced version of the ProntoHD and provides ei-
ther a dual-link HD-SDI or DVI connection for the real-time in- and
output of uncompressed video material up to a full 2K resolution in
RGB 10 bit.
Among other optionally available features to adapt the video system
to your special needs, the Pronto2K/ProntoHD hardware can be de-
livered with various storage capacities. However, an upgrade of a
Pronto2K/ProntoHD from a smaller storage capacity to a higher one
is possible at a later time without any problems. Overall, the
Pronto2K/ProntoHD can be delivered with the following options:

Pronto2K/HD-FC/SAN With this option the Pronto2K/ProntoHD
will be equipped with a dual fiber channel
interface for a real-time capable connec-
tion with an external fiber channel disk ar-
ray.
Pronto2K/HD-FC/LAN To connect to a fiber channel network the
Pronto2K/ProntoHD can be equipped
with a fiber channel networking host com-
puter interface.

Pronto2K/ProntoHD Hardware Guide
General Notes
The Pronto2K/ProntoHD is delivered to you fully preconfig-
ured and optimized for real-time in- and output of uncom-
pressed video streams. Changing any of the settings (for
example, the hardware, software and/or BIOS settings) may
lead to a loss of performance or may even render the sys-
tem unusable. Re-configuring the video system anew is in
most cases a lengthy procedure. Do not change any of the
settings unless you are absolutely sure of what you are do-
ing and what the results would be.
The video hard disks of the Pronto2K/ProntoHD are ar-
ranged as a stripe set. If one hard disk fails, your data will
be unrecoverable. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to
perform backups of your video data at regular intervals.
Only use the designated video drive (disk stripe set) to store
video and audio data. Other storage locations will be far too
slow for real-time operation.
Leave about 15% of the overall video hard disk capacity for
real-time performance reasons empty of data.
A DVS CineReel connected to a Pronto2K/ProntoHD as a
storage for video material will be too slow for some real-time
operations. It is recommended to copy the material to the vid-
eo hard disk array of the Pronto2K/ProntoHD before process-
ing.

Overview 2
This chapter provides a detailed overview of the Pronto2K/ProntoHD
hardware. The video system will be shown in a front and a rear view
and all its parts and connectors will be listed. For explanatory reasons
the section about the rear of the Pronto2K/ProntoHD also contains
some information about the DVS naming conventions of the connec-
tors.
Pronto2K/ProntoHD delivered with 2 chassis:
Some types of the Pronto2K/ProntoHD are delivered with two cas-
ings due to technical reasons. One of the casings contains the main
video system with system and video hard disks and the computer
equipment (in the following called ’main system’). The second cas-
ing contains other video hard disks as well as additional controllers
(in the following called ’disk array’). The specialities of these setups
will be detailed in each section whenever necessary.

2-2
Pronto2K/ProntoHD Hardware Guide
2.1 Overview of Front
This section provides an overview of the front of the Pronto2K/
ProntoHD. The operable front panel is covered by a faceplate which
can be removed. Therefore, the faceplate will be described first fol-
lowed by an overview of the operable front panel of the Pronto2K/
ProntoHD.
2.1.1 The Faceplate
The operable front panel is covered by a faceplate that has to be re-
moved to gain access, for example, to the video disks. The following
figure shows an overview of the faceplate:
Figure 2-1: Overview of faceplate
The faceplate is equipped with LEDs to monitor the status of the in-
ternal video hard disks. The LEDs of the faceplate show the activity
of the internal video hard disks.
To access the operable front panel of the video system, you have to
remove the faceplate by simply pulling it off towards the front:
To supply the LEDs of the faceplate with power, the faceplate
and the chassis of the video system are interconnected either
via a plug or a cable connection:
In case of a plug connection the plug is located at the bottom
right-hand side of the video system’s front (see section “The
Front Panel” on page 2-4). When you pull off the faceplate,
the connection is automatically severed and it is restored
again once you put the faceplate back in its place.
In case of a cable connection the faceplate is connected to
the chassis of the video system via a cable equipped with a
plug. To remove the faceplate fully, you have to disconnect
the cable.
