voltage where you’re using the appliance corresponds to
the value shown on the nameplate of the appliance.
When plugging in, plug the power cable first into the
device socket and then into the wall socket.
Charging the device battery
• The device is battery powered. The battery cell cannot be
removed, even for charging purposes. The device includes an
electronic battery charging function. In order to ensure full
availability of the battery cell, a “formatting” operation must
be carried out before first using the device:
• For a new device, the battery cell is partially pre-charged. First
switch on the device to fully discharge the battery. To do this,
push the 3-way switch down to the clipping position (CUT).
Keep the device switched on until its motor stops then return
the switch to the central position
• Afterwards, immediately plug the power cable first into the
device’s socket and secondly into the mains socket and charge
the battery for 20 hours. Whilst charging the pilot light will
stay on.
• After charging the device, repeat the formatting procedure, ie
full discharging and 20 hour recharging cycle, twice.

• After the formatting process, charge for 16-20 hours. It is
unnecessary to fully discharge the device during use or to leave
it on charge for longer than 20 hours. Do not charge for longer
than 24 hours as this can damage the device.
During the charging process, the device cannot be used
for hair clipping. Before use, unplug the power cable
first from the wall socket, then from the device.
USING OF APPLIANCE
Before use
• Unpack the appliance and remove all the packing materials.
• Inspect the appliance and the accessories carefully to verify
their soundness and undamaged condition. Only perfectly
sound and damage-free appliances may be connected to the
electrical mains.
• Before using the device for the first time, ensure it has been
fully formatted and charged as described in the Chapter
“Power supply of device”.
• Lubricating and oiling of cutting blades
• In order to keep the hair clipper in good working order and
enjoy good performance and results for a long time, the blades
must be oiled after use, as follows:

1. Push the comb attachment locking button to its
unlock position (UNLOCK), then pull the comb
attachment from the device. Next, remove the
blade unit by supporting its knurled side with
your thumb, and pushing its edge outwards
with your thumb as shown on the figure.
2. By gently pushing the white plastic element
support and moving the internal blade of
the blade unit in the direction of the arrow,
you can slightly open the blade profiles. Add
1-2 drops of oil between profiles. Use only
the oil supplied in the oil can or failing this,
an acid-free instrument oil.
Do not use hair oil, machine grease, mixed oil or solvent for
blade lubrication. Solvents remove and wash away the thin oil
film from the blades, which will impair their performance and
increase wear. When cleaning the blades, be extremely careful
not to damage the blade drive mechanism; our warranty does
not cover any damage caused during cleaning operations.
3. Replace the blade unit into the device. Align the
plastic pin on its base with the groove at the
rear side of the blade holder from above, then

push and snap the knife unit into the groove
from behind.
Information about lubricating oil:
- Lubricating oil is derived from mineral oil. Only apply it to the
marked lubrication points on the blades.
- It is toxic when swallowed.
- Do not allow children access to it.
- Avoid skin contact as it can cause allergic symptoms.
- If it get in your eyes or mouth, you should immediately seek
medical advice.
Instructions for cutting hair
Operations to be carried out before starting to cut hair
1. Charge the integrated battery cell, as described in the Chapter
“Power supply of device”.
2. Before starting hair clipping, unplug the power cable from both
the wall and the device sockets.
3. Check the hair clipper to ensure that the blade teeth are free
of excess oil. Switch it on for a short time and check that it is
running smoothly. Wipe off excess oil leaking from between
the blades.
4. Seat the person whose hair you are cutting in front of you so

that their head is at your eye level. This helps the operation of
the trimmer and gives you a clear view of your work.
5. Ensure the hair you are trimming is dry.
6. Before beginning the trim, comb the hair to remove any knots.
7. Place a gown about the neck and shoulders of the person
having their hair cut.
Warning!
Trim hair gently and at a steady rate. Cut only a short length of
hair at a time; you can continue later if required. During the trim,
comb the hair frequently to the style you are wanting to achieve.
General advice before starting to trim hair
Hair cutting requires some experience. It is much better to
leave hair on the long side for the first few trimmings, until you
get accustomed to the lengths produced by each of the comb
attachments.
Using the comb attachment accessories
• When inserting comb attachments, ensure the comb
attachment locking button (Part 3) is in its unlocked position
(UNLOCK).
• Push both protruding sides of the comb attachment into
rails on both sides of the device so that its comb side is

16
turned towards the rear part (fixing button side of the comb
attachment) of the device, then push it to the corresponding
clipping setting.
• Then move the comb attachment locking button to its locked
position (LOCK)!
• When removing the comb attachment, push the locking
button to its unlock position (UNLOCK), then pull down the
comb attachment from the device blades.
• To realise a straight cut, let the appliance cut the way for itself
through the hair. Do not force the cut by pushing the trimmer
through the hair.
• Remember to remove the hair that has been cut.
First step - trimming the nape of the neck
Set the comb attachment into the position for the required hair
trim. Between steps it is possible to readjust the trimming length
when the device has been switched off.
Set the three-way switch of the device into its
lower (clipping) position.
Hold the edge of the cutting blades of the hair clippers upwards
against the hair on the nape of the neck and begin trimming.

HCLR-1400
17
Start trimming in the middle of the nape of the neck from below
and move the trimmer upwards.
Hold the hair clipper gently in your hand and push it slightly
against the head directing the teeth of the comb attachment
upwards.
Lift the hair clipper slowly, moving the teeth of the comb
attachment upwards and away from the nape of the neck
through the hair. Cut only a small amount of hair at once.
Lift the hair clipper blades bit-by-bit, outwards from the bend of
the nape of the neck.
Continue to trim the hair on the nape of the neck upwards from
the lower part of the neck to the ears.
Second step - cutting the back of the head
Change the setting of the comb attachment when
the device has been switched off if necessary, then
trim the nape of the neck and the back of the head.
Third step - cutting the hair from the sides of the head
Change the setting of the comb attachment when
the device has been switched off and continue
trimming towards the hair on the side of the head.
User'sManual for HCLR-1400.indd 17User'sManual for HCLR-1400.indd 17 2015.12.06. 14:41:122015.12.06. 14:41:12

HCLR-1400
18
Fourth step - trimming of the poll
To trim the top of the head, direct the blades from
the nape towards the front so as to cut against the
growth direction of the hair. Sometimes – e.g. at
so called coils - this requires changing the cutting
direction from the front towards the nape.
For longer hair, use the accessory comb to lift hair
on the crown of the head. Trim the amount of hair
lifted above the comb or lift hair with two fingers
and cut to the length intended.
Whilst clipping, comb out shaved hair from time to time and
check for unevenness; correct, if necessary.
Fifth step - last phase of hair trimming
At the end of the hair-cut, use the hair clipper
without the comb attachment in order to trim any
hairs remaining on the bottom of the neck, at its
side and around the ears.
To do this, set the three-way switch of the device into its upper
(adjustment) position.
In order to achieve a straight trim of a side curl, use the hair
clippers in vertical direction, with the cutting blades upward.

Apply the hair trimmer gently to the contours of the hair so as
to touch the skin surface with the point of the blades and make
downward movements with the trimmer. By doing this, you can
achieve contours as if you’d used a razor.
Beard trimming guide
• To trim beards, set the three-way switch of the device to its
lower (clipping) position.
• Set the required clipping length at the comb attachment, as
described above. Beards are recommended to be trimmed
longer at first in smaller amounts, to allow for corrections.
• When beard clipping has been completed, remove the comb
attachment and set the three-way switch of the device into
its upper (adjustment) position. With this setting you can
improve the beard contour.
MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING
Warning! Before cleaning and maintenance, the
device must be switched off. Do not clean or carry out
maintenance whilst the device is charging. Always
unplug the power cable first from the wall socket then
from the device.

• In order to avoid an electric shock, never immerse the
appliance, the cord or the plug in water or any other liquid.
• Never remove the cover of the appliance.
• After use, pull down comb attachment from the appliance and,
using the small brush, clean hairs carefully from between the
upper and lower blades.
• Clean the outside cover of the appliance with a damp, soft,

lint-free cloth. Take care not to allow any moisture inside the
cover. Let the appliance dry completely before re-using or
storing it.
• When cleaning the appliance, never use solvent (acetone,
benzole, petrol, alcohol, etc.) as these may solve the casing
material, or the internal parts of the appliance if they get into.
Do not use cleaning agents with coarse or grinding effect.
• In order to preserve hair cutting performance and to maintain
the long life of your appliance, it is important to regularly oil
the hair cutting unit.
• If over a period of time, despite regular cleaning and oiling, the
cutting power decreases, the hair cutting unit can be replaced.
However, the hair cutting unit is subject to wear and tear, for
