2 CMU 100 SYSTEM
2.1 DESCRIPTION
Communication unit (CMU 100) is modular system of communication devices t at can be used
for various of tasks suc as:
communication converter (for example RS232 to RS485)
star coupler (for example 1 fiber optic to 7 fiber optics)
repeater (for example RS485/485)
communication isolator (for example for preventing ground loops)
communication listener - debugger
PC serial com port extender (for example USB to 4 serial com)
CMU 100 device is a couple of software and ardware. For different purposes, different software
versions and different ardware configuration ave been developed.
2.1.1 SOFTWARE
Software is application dependent and allows different ardware configurations. Software's task
is switc ing between communication ports and allows almost any combination between t em.
2.1.2 ARDWARE
Hardware is based on main board wit power supply and port switc ing logic. On t at board,
interface boards are attac ed. CMU 100 can andle up to 8 different interface boards. Currently
available interface boards:
RS232
isolated RS485
Multimode Fiber Optic wit ST and SMA connectors
Singlemode Fiber Optic wit ST, FC & SC connectors
Versatile Link Fiber Optic 1 mm plastic cable
USB
et ernet (wit one virtual com port)
Housing is aluminium and intended for mount on standard DIN 35 rail (acc. to DIN EN 50022). 3
different ousings ave been made. Depends on ow many interfaces device as, appropriate
ousing is used.
ardware settings
All settings on t e device can be made from outside by a DIL switc . It is not necessary to open
t e ousing.

3 RS232 TO 2x RS232 FALLBACK SWITC
3.1 DESCRIPTION
Fallback switc is communication device t at switc es data between two master ports and one
slave port. It is intended to connect one device (RTU) to two master devices (PC).
T is device contains t ree RS232 interfaces, one slave and two master ports. W en data
comes to one master port, data is transferred to t e slave port. Ot er master port is deactivated.
At t e same time timer starts. During timer delay, data from "first" master port are transferred to
t e slave port. Meanw ile ot er master port is not active. After timer elapses, deactivated master
port is activated again. Slave port is connected to bot master ports again. If data comes to bot
master ports simultaneously, master port 1 (p ysical port 2) as priority.
Switc time delay is set wit switc es at t e bottom of t e device. Possible timer settings are: no
delay, 20 ms, 40 ms, 60 ms, 80 ms, 0,1 s, 0,2 s, 0,3 s, 0,4 s, 0,5 s, 1s, 1,2 s, 1,5 s, 2 s, 2,5 s, 5
s.
Wide power supply voltage allows connection to all common station batteries. Additionaly it can
be also connected to standard AC voltages.
T is device is intended for use in cubicles and cabinets in all kinds of power production,
transmission and distribution stations. It requires no maintenace. All normaly used connectors,
switc es and lig t indicators are accessed at t e front side of t e device. One lig t indicator
indicates power supply voltage, ot ers indicate communication transfer.

3.3 APPEARANCE
3.4 ARDWARE DESCRIPTION
T is configuration of device is made from main board (power supply, LEDs, switc es and logic
witc ), t ree RS232 interface boards.
3.4.1 MAIN BOARD
Power LED indicates t at device is turned on. T e rig t LEDs of one port s ows activity on
receive (Rx) line and t e left one s ows activity on transmit (Tx) line.
On t e bottom side of device are switc es and JTAG connector w ic is intended for
downloading necessary software. Do not connect anyt ing to t at connector.
Additional switc es allows ec o on eac port. Ec o can be set on or off for eac port.

5 INSTALLATION
5.1 INSTALLATION

Only qualified personnel may work with described devices after being familiar with warnings and

Following instruction must be taken into consideration:
T e device must be accessible to qualified personnel only.
T e device is permitted to operate in enclosed ousing or cabinet only.
T e device location must be vibration-free.
T e admisible operating temperature must be observed.
C eck t e device for damage at unpacking. If device is damaged it must not be installed
but it s ould be send to t e manufacturer for repair.
T e device s ould not be opened.
T e device s ould be mounted on a 35 mm rail (acc to EN 50022).
Attac ground wire before attac ing power supply. Device must be grounded during
operation!
Single core or stranded wire 0,5 – 2,5 mm2 must be used for power supply connection. If
stranded wire is used, ferrules must be used to prevent fraying. Recommended stripping
leng t is 5 mm.
Protective eart ing wire must be terminated wit tinned copper ear terminal.
