FiberOptic(SINGLEMODEand/orMULTIMODE)hasbeenusedforsignal
transmissioninautomationforcommunicationmoreandmoreoften.
Themainadvantageof FiberOpticisitsimmunitytoelectromagnetic
interference, slightradiationandhightransmissioncapacity
1.1Useofthemultiplexer
Usingapairof multiplexersseveral absolutelyindependenttransmissionchannels
overoneopticlinecanbeestabilished.Theindividual channelscanbeusedthat
way:
-several independentsimultaneousapplications(accordingtothenumberof
channels),
-simultaneousdata transferoveronechannelandcontrol,statusorclocksignals
overtherestof channels.
Multiplexercanworkwithoutanysetting.
2.0Operationprinciples
Multiplexerasociatesfollowingserial channelstoonepairof fibers:

3.0Installation
Therearethree differentproblemsof installationtodiscuss:RS232 orRS422 link
connection,opticfiberlinkconnection,respectivelytwomultiplexers
interconnectingandpowersupplyconnection.
3.1Metallicinterfacesconnection
All interfacesexceptopticfiberandsupplyinputaretakenouttoDB9female
connector.Theconnectordescriptionisintablesshowninfollowingchapters.
Theinterfacesconcentratedtooneconnectorcanbedistributedtoseparate
connectorsbyELOE24EandELOE24Fcables.

3.2RS232 interface
Therearethree differentwayshowtousethemultiplexerELOE246,E247 or
E248 withRS232 interfaces:
1-FourindependentduplexchannelswithRS232 interface.Firswithsignals
TxD1andRxD1(contacts6,1),secondwithsignalsTxD2,RxD2(contacts7,2),
thirdTxD3,RxD3(contacts8,3) andfourthTxD4andRxD4(contacts9,4).
Contact5-GND iscommonforall channels.WhenthecableELOE24Eisused
eachchannelhasitsownstandardconnectorDB9FwiththesignalsRxD(contact
2), TxD(contact3) andGND (contact5).
2-Oneduplexline,transmittingdata (TxDandRxD)throughthechannele.g.
(No.1) andaccompaniingcontrolandstatussignals,RTS,CTS,DTR,DSRand
DCDthroughtherestof channels.
3–Twoduplexlines,eachusesonechannelfordata andsecondoneforcontrol
andstatussignal -handshake(e.g. RTS-CTS, orDTR-DSR).
Thedata rateisallowedinrangefrom0to230 000 bps.
Thecablebetweenenddevice andmultiplexermustnotexceed15 m.

3.3RS422 interface
RS422 isdestinedfortwopointconnection.Thesignal issymmetric,differential.
Eachsignal isdistributedoveritstwistedpair.Thewiresaremarkedforinstance
Rx1+andRx1-.Inidlestate(whichisaccordingtostopbit inassynchronneus
mode)thepotential of Rx1+ishigherthanthepotential of Rx1-. Theconnectoris
describedinfollowingtable:
ToimprovethetransferovertheRS422 linetheterminatingresistors100 -120 Ω
canbeconnectedbetweenthecorrespondingpairof wires.Theinstallationof
terminatorsisveryeasybytheswitchingonthe
switchesonthebacksideof multiplexer.
Themaximumcablelengthbetweenenddevice
andmultiplexermustnotexceed1200 m.
Multiplexercanworkwithoutanysetting–the
data ratecanbeanyintherangefrom0to
230 000 bps.Thetransferdoesnotdependon
otherchannelsandonthecommunication
protocol.
3.4Twomultiplexersinterconnection
TheopticcableisconnectedthroughtheSCconnector(modelsE247,E249,
E24A,E24B),orSTone(modelsE246,249).Theremotemultiplexer’s
transmittermustbeconnectedtolocal receiverandremotereceivermustbe
connectedtolocal transmitter(thefibersarecrossing).Thecorrectlyconnected
multiplexersareindicatedbyLINK indicator.
