This document describes how to replace a CPU fan on the AX100-Series
motherboard. CPU fan 6 is dedicated to the central processing unit on
SP A, and is the only CPU fan in AX100SC/AX100SCi systems. CPU fan
7 cools the processor on SP B in an AX100 or AX100i storage system.
(Replacing a failed system fan 1-5 is covered in another note.) Topics

Handling FRUs
This section describes the precautions that you must take and the
general procedures you must follow when removing, installing, and
storing fans, the storage processor assembly, or any other Field
Replaceable Unit (FRU).
Power Issues and
FRUs AX100-Series storage systems are designed to be powered up
continually. Disks and power supplies are hot repairable; that is, you
can replace faulty units while the system is running. Front bezels
should always be attached and each compartment should contain a
FRU or filler panel to ensure EMI compliance and proper air flow
over the FRUs.
You should not remove a faulty FRU until you have a replacement
available.
When you replace or install FRUs, you can inadvertently damage the
sensitive electronic circuits in the equipment by simply touching
them. Electrostatic charge that has accumulated on your body
discharges through the circuits. If the air in the work area is very dry,
running a humidifier in the work area will help decrease the risk of
ESD damage. Follow the procedures below to prevent damage to the
equipment.
Read and understand the following instructions:
◆Provide enough room to work on the equipment. Clear the work
site of any unnecessary materials or materials that naturally build
up electrostatic charge, such as foam packaging, foam cups,
cellophane wrappers, and similar items.
◆Do not remove replacement or upgrade FRUs from their antistatic
packaging until you are ready to install them.
◆Before you service a storage system, gather together the ESD kit
and all other materials you will need. Once servicing begins,
avoid moving away from the work site; otherwise, you may build
up an electrostatic charge.
◆An ESD wristband is supplied with your storage system. To use
it, attach the clip of the ESD wristband (strap) to any bare
(unpainted) metal on the storage system; then put the wristband
around your wrist with the metal button against your skin.

◆Use the ESD kit when handling any FRU. If an emergency arises
and the ESD kit is not available, follow the procedures in the
Emergency Procedures (Without an ESD Kit) section.

In an emergency when an ESD kit is not available, use the following
procedures to reduce the possibility of an electrostatic discharge by
ensuring that your body and the subassembly are at the same
electrostatic potential.
These procedures are not a substitute for the use of an ESD kit.
Follow them only in the event of an emergency.
◆Before touching any FRU, touch a bare (unpainted) metal surface
of the cabinet or enclosure.
◆Before removing any FRU from its antistatic bag, place one hand
firmly on a bare metal surface of the enclosure, and at the same
time, pick up the FRU while it is still sealed in the antistatic bag.
Once you have done this, do not move around the room or touch
other furnishings, personnel, or surfaces until you have installed
the FRU.
◆When you remove a FRU from the antistatic bag, avoid touching
any electronic components and circuits on it.
◆If you must move around the room or touch other surfaces before
installing a FRU, first place the FRU back in the antistatic bag.
When you are ready again to install the FRU, repeat these
procedures.

Removing the storage processor assembly from the AX100-Series
chassis provides access to internal parts that you can replace,
including memory cards, system and CPU fans, and, on
AX100SC/AX100SCi models, a battery-backed cache card.
Make sure you have an ESD wriststrap attached to your wrist as you
perform the following steps.
1. Push the On/Off button to turn off power. Wait a full minute for
the storage system to power down.
2. Once your system is powered down, release the retention bail(s)
and unplug the ac line cord(s) as shown in Figure 1.

3. Unplug your LAN, data, and serial cables from the back of the
AX100-Series storage processor assembly. Label each connection
for easy reference when you replace the connections.
4. Remove the assembly from the storage-system chassis.

CAUTION
!
The SP assembly weighs approximately 20 pounds (9 kg) and
comes completely out of the storage-system chassis; be prepared to
support the assembly without dropping it.
a. For systems with knob-style securing latches at either side of the
storage processor assembly, turn the latches 1/4 turn — until
the loop aligns vertically with the chassis; then use the finger
holds to carefully pull the assembly straight out as shown in
Figure 2.

b. For systems with hoop-style securing latches, push the latches
inward to release the storage processor assembly as you
carefully pull the assembly straight out. See Figure 3.

5. Place the assembly on a clean, anti-static surface.

1. Facing the assembly from the rear, press the cover release buttons
on each side of the SP assembly as you pull the cover back with
your thumbs. This action, shown in Figure 4, releases the cover
from the assembly chassis.

2. Carefully pull the SP assembly cover back, up, and out of the
chassis tab slots, as shown in Figure 5.
Note that the cover remains attached to the assembly motherboard by
short power cord cluster(s).

3. Without straining the power cord cluster(s), turn the cover over and
rest it against the side and the system fans, as shown in Figure 6.

Once the cover is off and resting securely on the sides of the SP
assembly chassis, you can remove the SP fan from the AX100-Series
motherboard, as described in the next section.

Make sure you have an ESD wriststrap attached to your wrist as you
perform the following steps.
The illustrations in this section show the replacement of CPU fan 6, in an
AX100SC/AX100SCi. Use the same procedure to replace fan 7. The second
CPU fan resides on SP B, to the left (from the system rear) of SP A.
Removing the CPU Fan
Refer to Figure 7 as you remove the CPU fan.
1. Carefully disconnect the power cable that connects the fan to the
motherboard.
2. Pull the fan straight up, out of the connector, and away from the
motherboard.

3. Place the fan in an antistatic bag and return it to your service
provider.

1. Remove the replacement fan from its antistatic bag.
2. Align the replacement fan as indicated by the arrows on its top
and side (the arrows should point up from the motherboard and
away from the processor). Note that the power cord can
comfortably reach the motherboard only in the correct
orientation.
3. Carefully push the replacement fan straight down and into its
connector, then connect the power cord. The connector is keyed
to ensure the correct orientation. See Figure 8.

Make sure you have an ESD wriststrap attached to your wrist as you
follow these steps to replace the storage processor assembly in the
AX100-Series chassis.
Replacing the SP Assembly Cover
1. Without straining the power cord cluster, turn the cover over and
into position on the SP assembly chassis.
2. Align the tab slots with the tabs on the cover, and slide the cover
down until it snaps into place. See Figure 9.

1. Slide the SP assembly into the storage system chassis.
a. For systems with knob-style securing latches at either side of the
storage processor assembly, set the latch knobs in the vertical
(released) position, then push the storage processor assembly
directly into the chassis, as shown in Figure 10. To secure the
assembly in the chassis, turn the latch knobs 1/4 turn to a
horizontal position.

b. For systems with hoop-style securing latches at either side of the
storage processor assembly, simply push the storage processor
assembly directly into the chassis, as shown in Figure 11.

2. Replace the data, LAN, serial, and power connections you
removed earlier.
3. Remove and store the ESD wriststrap.

4. Power up the storage system.
5. Use Navisphere® Express to verify that the new fan is
operational.
a. From a network-connected station, start Navisphere® Express
for the AX100-Series storage system by entering the IP address
in a browser window. (Refer to the release notes on the AX100
support website for a list of supported browsers.)
b. In the navigation pane, under View, click components.
c. Scan the list of components to verify that the new fan is
recognized and working properly.
