Caution: Read instructions thoroughly.
When unplugging or plugging the pipe
chanter into the stock, ALWAYS hold it
close to the thread end. e pipe chanter
cracks easily if not handled properly;
therefore, it is not covered under
warranty.
Components: A Rexin™ bag with cover,
a chanter, a blowpipe, two drones, 2
plastic chanter reeds, 4 cane drone reeds
(2 long bass, 2 short tenor), a spool
of thread and 2 rubber stoppers. e
3-section drone is the bass and the
2-section drone is the tenor.
Before Assembly: Test and t reeds
into proper pipes. If any reed is loose,
wrap with more thread until it ts
snugly in the pipe’s bore.
Pipe Chanter Reed: Blow hard into
the non-threaded end. Be careful the
reed-lips do not touch the inside of your mouth. If the reed has low
volume and closes easily, pinch the outer edges of the reed to create
a small opening between the lips. If the reed is too hoarse, close the
opening by pressing the lips together.
Drone Reeds: e thread end of a longer drone reed plugs into the bore
of the bass drone at the thread end. e thread end of a short drone
reeds plugs into the tenor drone. Blow on the reed without the reed
tongue touching the inside of your mouth. A gentle blow should make
a squawking sound and a hard blow should close the reed tongue. If the

thread
reed is too closed (you get no sound), li the tip of the tongue about ¼
inch and gently massage the top side of the tongue so it develops a slight
arch. If the drone reed is too open, using too much air, slip a razor blade
under reed and bend the tip closed. In severe cases, wet the reed, tie the
tongue closed, and allow to dry for a few days.
Bass and Tenor Drones: ere are 2 holes in the
common stock for the drones. If you are right
handed, the bass drone ts into the right bore
and the tenor into the le. If you are le handed,
the bass drone ts into the le bore and the tenor
into the right. It takes about 20 minutes of playing
the pipes before the reeds are “blown in.” Aer
the reeds are “blown in” you can tune the drone
reeds. e major pitch of the reed is adjusted by
the bridle. With 2/3 of the tuning slide showing
on the tenor drone, adjust the bridal on the reed
to tune the drone to D. With 2/3 of the tuning
slide showing on the bass drone, adjust the bridle
on the reed to tune an octave below the tenor’s. If a drone reed is prone
to double toning, change the tension of the bridle or scrape the tongue to
weaken it.
Learning Procedure: At rst, only the chanter is played. e holes in the
common stock are plugged with stoppers and the drones are not installed.
is makes it easier to learn breath
and nger control. Aer you learn a
few songs, install one drone. Add the
second drone as you become more
adept.
Flap Valve: e ap valve must be
straight, or it may hang up when
plugged into the stock.
Bag Care: NEVER season a Rexine™
bag. continued
