Chapter 1: Introduction
This manual has been written for users of the Platinous Sterling Series Chambers
and particularly for technicians. Read it thoroughly to obtain the maximum
performance from the chamber.

the Standard User’s Manual when a contradiction is found.
1.1 Safety Symbols
The following safety symbols are used throughout this manual.
Note: Provides information necessary for gaining full performance from the chamber or
to prevent damage to equipment.
Procedure: Explains how to operate on a step-by-step basis. Offers supplementary informa-
tion.

2.1 Door with Viewing Window (including chamber
light) (ES-VW2,3,4)
2.1.1 Purpose
The window is used for observing the specimen in the test chamber.
2.1.2 Operation
Precautions in Usage:
•During operation at low temperatures at high ambient humidity, condensation or frost
may form on the external window surface.
•During operation at high temperature, the exterior window surface may be hot.
FRAGILE GLASS! The glass will break if hit or pressed with excessive
force.
2.1.3 Specifications
Temperature Range -70 to 150°C (-95 to 300°F)
(reduces max. chamber temperature to 150°C)
Viewing Window 7.1”W x 10.3”H, for Type 2 and 3.
17.1”W x 11.7”H, for Type 4.
Chamber Lamp 6 Watt fluorescent bulb, isolated from the workspace and integrated
with viewing window.
Chamber Lamp Switch Located on the Instrumentation Panel.

2.2 Inner Glass Door (ES-IG2, ES-IG3, ES-IG4)
2.2.1 Purpose
Used for observation and operating the speciment in the test chamber.
2.2.2 Precaution
Maximum temperature range with this option is -35 to 150°C for ESU and ESL models, and -70 to 150°C
for ESZ and ESZ models.
When the chamber is run with the main door open and the inner door closed, temperature pull down rate,
temperature uniformity, and the lowest attainable temperature may not meet specifications.
During operation at low temperatures, condensation or frost may form on the inner door surface.
During operation at high temperatures, the resin on the port flange may discolor. This discoloring does not
affect quality whatsoever.
FRAGILE GLASS! The glass will break if hit or pressed on with
excessive force.
2.2.3 Specifications
Inner glass door cannot be used with optional door with viewing window (ES-VW).
The wiper is not provided with temperature-only chambers.
Accessories include:
•1 pair of natural rubber gloves
•There is no viewing window or chamber lamp on the test chamber door, a fluores-
cent lamp is not provided as an accessory.

2.3 Ports (ES-CP2,4,6)
2.3.1 Purpose
Allows access through chamber wall for wires/tubes to chamber interior.
2.3.2 Precaution
Powering heat generating items in chamber can lead to thermal run away.
2.3.3 Operation
Ensure that port is sealed around wires/tubes to prevent ambient air infiltration into the chamber. A silicone
port plug is provided for this purpose.

2.4 Shelf (ES-SS1,2,3,4)
2.4.1 Purpose
Allows support/stacking of small test items in chamber.
2.4.2 Precaution
Avoid arranging test items such that they interfere with or block chamber airflow.
2.4.3 Installation/Operation
Procedure:
1. Insert support clips (4) into wall supports at desired shelf level.
2. Place shelf on support clips.
Note: Do not exceed rated shelf loading of 15 lbs per shelf or 45 lbs combined total for
all shelves.

2.5 Dry Air Purge (ES-DA5,10)
2.5.1 Purpose
The dry air purge is used to reduce the potential for condensation on products during heat-ups or to extend
the time between defrost cycles for continuous low temperature operation.
2.5.2 Installation
Connect air supply per the following:

The dry air is being purged into the workspace when Time Signal No. 9 (Dry Air) is set ‘ON’.
2.5.4 Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Checking Dry Air Desiccant (every month)
Remove the water compartment box door and set the chamber to low humidity operation. Wait
approximately 10 minutes, then check the moisture indicator in the air compartment. The normal color of

the indicator is blue when the dry air is flowing. The moisture indicator will be purple (pink) if the desiccant
needs to be changed.
