Safety Message to Installers of Siren Speakers
People’s lives depend on your proper installation and servicing of Federal Signal products. It is important to
read and follow all instructions shipped with this product and the original product. Listed below are some
other important safety instructions and precautions you should follow:
Before Installation
Qualications
• Toproperlyinstallanelectronicsiren,youmusthaveagoodunderstandingofautomotiveelectrical
proceduresandsystems,alongwithprociencyintheinstallationandserviceofsafetywarning
equipment. Always refer to the vehicle’s service manuals when installing equipment on a vehicle.
Sound Hazards
• Yourhearingandthehearingofothers,inornearyouremergencyvehicle,couldbedamagedby
loudsounds.Thiscanoccurfromshortexposurestoveryloudsounds,orfromlongerexposures
tomoderatelyloudsounds.Forhearingconservationguidance,refertofederal,state,orlocal
recommendations.OSHAStandard1910.95offersguidanceon“PermissibleNoiseExposure.”
• Alleffectivesirensandhornsproduceloudsounds(120dB)thatmaycausepermanenthearingloss.
Alwaysminimizeyourexposuretothesoundofthesirenorhornandwearhearingprotection.Donot
soundthesirenorhornindoorsorinenclosedareaswhereyouandotherswillbeexposedtothesound.
• FederalSignalsirenampliersandspeakersaredesignedtoworktogetherasasystem.Combininga
sirenandspeakerfromdifferentmanufacturersmayreducethewarningeffectivenessofthesirensystem
andmaydamagethecomponents.Youshouldverifyortestyourcombinationtomakesurethesystem
workstogetherproperlyandmeetsfederal,stateandlocalstandardsorguidelines.
During Installation
• DONOTgetmetalshavingsinsidetheproduct.Metalshavingscancausethesystemtofail.Ifdrilling
mustbedoneneartheunit,placeanESD-approvedcoverovertheunittopreventmetalshavingsfrom
entering the unit. Inspect the unit after mounting to be sure there are no shavings present in or near the unit.
• Toavoidabatteryexplosion,alwaysdisconnectthenegativebatterycablerstandreconnectitlast.
Avoidcausingasparkwhenconnectingnearortothebattery.Thegasesproducedbyabatterycan
causedabatteryexplosionthatcouldresultinvehicledamageandseriousinjury.
• DONOTconnectthissystemtothevehiclebatteryuntilALLotherelectricalconnectionsaremade,
mountingofallcomponentsiscomplete,andyouhaveveriedthatnoshortsexist.Ifwiringisshorted
tothevehicleframe,highcurrentconductorscancausehazardoussparksresultinginelectricalresor
yingmoltenmetal.
• Besurethesirenamplierandspeaker(s)inyourinstallationhavecompatiblewattageratings.
• Inorderfortheelectronicsirentofunctionproperly,thegroundconnectionmustbemadetothe
NEGATIVEbatteryterminal.

• Soundoutputwillbeseverelyreducedifanyobjectsareinfrontofthespeaker.Ifmaximumsound
outputisrequiredforyourapplication,youshouldensurethatthefrontofthespeakerisclearofany
obstructions.
• Installthespeaker(s)asfarforwardonthevehicleaspossible,inalocationthatprovidesmaximum
signaling effectiveness while minimizing the sound reaching the vehicle’s occupants. Refer to the
NationalInstituteofJusticeguide500-00forfurtherinformation.
• Mountingthespeakersbehindthegrillewillreducethesoundoutputandwarningeffectivenessofthe
sirensystem.Beforemountingspeakersbehindthegrille,makesurethevehicleoperatorsaretrained
and understand that this type of installation is less effective for warning others.
• Soundpropagationandwarningeffectivenesswillbeseverelyreducedifthespeakerisnotfacing
forward.Carefullyfollowtheinstallationinstructionsandalwaysinstallthespeakerwiththeprojector
facing forward.
• DONOTinstallthespeaker(s)orroutethespeakerwireswheretheymayinterferewiththeoperationof
airbag sensors.
• Ifavehicleseatistemporaryremoved,verifywiththevehiclemanufactureriftheseatneedstobe
recalibrated for proper airbag deployment.
• Installationoftwospeakersrequiresthatyouwirethespeakersinphase.
• Neverattempttoinstallaftermarketequipment,whichconnectstothevehiclewiring,withoutreviewing
avehiclewiringdiagram,whichisavailablefromthevehiclemanufacturer.Insurethatyourinstallation
willnotaffectvehicleoperationandsafetyfunctionsorcircuits.Alwayscheckvehicleforproper
operation after installation.
• DONOTinstallequipmentorroutewiringorcordinthedeploymentpathofanairbag.
• Locatethecontrolheadsothevehicle,controls,andmicrophonecanbeoperatedsafely.
• Whendrillingintoavehiclestructure,besurethatbothsidesofthesurfaceareclearofanythingthat
could be damaged.
• Ifavehicleseatistemporarilyremoved,verifywiththevehiclemanufactureriftheseatneedstobe
recalibrated for proper airbag deployment.
After Installation
• Afterinstallation,testthesirensystemandlightsystemtoensurethatitisoperatingproperly.
• Testallvehiclefunctions,includinghornoperation,vehiclesafetyfunctionsandvehiclelightsystems,
to ensure proper operation. Ensure that installation has not affected vehicle operation or changed any
vehicle safety function or circuit.
• Aftertestingiscomplete,provideacopyoftheseinstructionstotheinstructionalstaffandalloperating
personnel.
• Filetheseinstructionsinasafeplaceandrefertothemwhenmaintainingorreinstallingtheproduct.
Failuretofollowallsafetyprecautionsandinstructionsmayresultinpropertydamage,seriousinjury,ordeath.

mountsonespeakerineachsideoftherearbumperofa2011andnewerChevyCaprice.
Unpacking the Kit
Afterunpackingthekit,inspectitfordamagethatmayhaveoccurredintransit.Ifithasbeendamaged,do
notattempttoinstalloroperateit.Fileaclaimimmediatelywiththecarrier,statingtheextentofdamage.
Carefullycheckallenvelopes,shippinglabels,andtagsbeforeremovingordestroyingthem.Ensurethatthe
partslistedinTable1areincludedinthepackage.Ifyouaremissinganyparts,contactCustomerSupportat

Mounting the Rumbler
INSTALLATION PRECAUTION—Do not install the speaker near the fuel tank or fuel
lines. Installing the speaker too close to fuel line/tank areas may cause fuel leakage
or fire during a vehicle collision, causing personal injury or death.
USE ONLY WITH RUMBLER AMPLIFIER—This speaker is designed to be used only
with the Rumbler Amplifier. Do not connect this speaker directly to a standard
electronic siren. Connecting this speaker directly to a standard electronic siren will
greatly reduce the effectiveness of the siren signal. When installing this speaker,
always refer to the Rumbler low-frequency amplifier installation and operating
instructions (part no. 2562420) for more detailed information about the siren system
and how to install, service, and operate the system safely. Instruction manuals are
available for viewing or downloading at www.fedsig.com.
Failure to follow all safety precautions and instructions may result in property
damage, serious injury, or death.

SPEAKER MOUNTING PRECAUTION—To avoid reduction of sound output and
damage to the speaker, ensure that the speaker is mounted with the slots facing
the ground.
NOTE:ThebandhalvesincludedwiththeRumblerspeakerarenotusedinthisinstallation.
Tomountthespeakers:
1. Togainaccesstotheareainsidetherearbumper,disassemblethevehicleaccordingtotheinstructions
in the manufacturer’s service manual.
DRILLING PRECAUTIONS—Before drilling holes, check the area you are drilling into
to be sure you do not damage vehicle components while drilling. All drilled holes
should be de-burred and all sharp edges should be smoothed. All wire routings
going through drilled holes should be protected by a grommet or convolute/split
loom tubing.
2. SeeFigures1belowandFigure2onpage3.Positionastepbracketonthecrossmemberasshownand
markthecentersofthefourmountingholes.Drilltheupperholes3/16"indiameterandthelowerholes
3/8"indiameter.Removeanyburrstoensurethatthebracketsandmountinghardwaretproperly.

3. SeeFigure2onpage5andFigure3onpage6.LooselyassembletheRumblerspeakerinthelongand
shortbandsusinga5/16"x1-1/4"boltintheholeinthebottomofthebandtabs.Theshortbandfaces
thefrontofthevehicle.Inserttwo5/16"-18x2-1/2"boltsthroughthestepbracketandbands,andthen
place two spacers on each bolt.

4. Withthesoundprojector(withRumblerinsignia)facingtheoutsideofthevehicle,placethisassembly
againstthecrossmember,thelong5/16"boltsgoingthroughthe3/8"holes.Installatwashers,lock
washers,andnutsloosely.Installtwo1/4"TypeBscrewsintothe3/16"drilledholes.Adjustthespeaker
formaximumclearancefromthetailpipe,andtightenallthebolts.
5. Position the heatshield on the tailpipe and secure it with the two hose clamps.
6. Repeatsteps2through5fortheothersideofthevehicle.

8. Afteryoumountthespeakers,connectthesuppliedwireharnesstotheleadsfromtheRumbler
amplier.Notethattwospeakersmustbeconnectedinparallelandinphase.Fordetails,refertothe
instructionsincludedwiththeamplier.
9. SeeFigure4belowandFigure5onpage7.Removeanapproximately3"x6"sectiononeachendof
thelowersplashpanelforspeakerclearance.

12. Reassemble the vehicle.

sirenspeakerinstallationislesseffectiveatwarningothers.

• Maximumsoundoutputwillbeseverelyreducedifanyobjectsareinfrontofthespeaker.Ifyour
installationhasobstructionsinfrontofthespeaker,driveevenmorecautiously.
• Frequentlyinspectthespeakertoensurethatitisclearofanyobstruction,suchasmudorsnow,which
willreducemaximumsoundoutput.
Signaling Limitations
• Beawarethattheuseofyourvisualandaudiblesignalingdevicesdoesnotgiveyoutherighttoforce
yourwaythroughtrafc.Youremergencylights,siren,andactionsareREQUESTINGtheright-of-way.
• Althoughyourwarningsystemisoperatingproperly,itmaynotalerteveryone.Peoplemaynothear,
see,orheedyourwarningsignal.Youmustrecognizethisfactandcontinuedrivingcautiously.
• Situationsmayoccurwhichobstructyourwarningsignalwhennaturalorman-madeobjectsarebetween
yourvehicleandothers.Thiscanalsooccurwhenyouraiseyourhoodortrunklid.Ifthesesituations
occur,beespeciallycareful.
Driving Limitations
• Atthestartofyourshift,youshouldensurethatthelight/soundsystemissecurelyattachedtothe
vehicle and operating properly.
• Iftheuniquecombinationofemergencyvehicleequipmentinstalledinyourvehiclehasresultedin
thesirencontrolsbeinginstalledinapositionthatdoesnotallowyoutooperatethembytouchonly,
OPERATECONTROLSONLYWHILEYOURVEHICLEISSTOPPED.
• Ifdrivingconditionsrequireyourfullattention,youshouldavoidoperatingthesirencontrolswhilethe
vehicle is in motion.
Continuing Education
• Filetheseinstructionsinasafeplaceandrefertothemperiodically.Giveacopyoftheseinstructionsto
new recruits and trainees.
Failuretofollowthesesafetyprecautionsmayresultinpropertydamage,seriousinjury,ordeath.
Testing the Installation
SOUND HAZARD—All effective sirens and horns produce loud sounds (120 dB)
that may cause permanent hearing loss. Always minimize your exposure to the
sound of the siren and horn and wear hearing protection. Do not sound the siren
or horn indoors or in enclosed areas where you and others will be exposed to the
sound.
LIGHT HAZARD—To be an effective warning device, an emergency warning system
produces bright light that can be hazardous to your eyesight when viewed at a
close range. Do not stare directly into the lights at a close range or permanent
damage to your eyesight may occur.
Aftertestingtheinstallation,testtheemergencywarningsystemtoensurethatitisoperatingproperly.Also
testallvehiclefunctions,includinghornoperation,vehiclesafetyfunctions,andvehiclelightingsystemsto
ensure proper operation. Ensure that the installation has not affected the vehicle operation or changed any
vehicle safety functions or circuits.
