Before You Throw Away Your Old
Refrigerator or Freezer:
Takeoff the doors.
Leavethe shelvesin placeso that children may not
easily climb inside.
Refrigerants
All refrigeration products contain refrigerants, which
under federal law must be removed prior to product
disposal. Ifyou are getting rid of an old refrigeration
product, check with the company handling the disposal
about what to do.
USE OF EXTENSION CORDS
Because of potential safety hazards under certain conditions, we strongly recommend against the use
of an extension cord.
However,ifyou must usean extension cord, it isabsolutely necessarythat it be a UL-listed(inthe United States)

Crisperscan easily be removed bytilting up

be rolled forward until the door opens enough
to slidethe crispersout. Insome cases,when

move the refrigerator to

Hold 3 seconds to Lock Control
If no water is dispensed when the refrigerator
is first installed, there may be air in the water
line system. Press the dispenser arm for at
least two minutes to remove trapped air from
the water line and to fillthe water system. To
flush out impurities in the water line, throw
away the first six glassfuls of water.
IkCAUTION: Neverputfingersorany
other objects into the ice crusher discharge
opening.
Dispenser Light

Ice Storage Drawer on Dispenser Models
Toremove:
Slidethe icemaker power switch to the OFFposition.
Pullthe drawer straight out and then lift past the stop
position.
Toreplace:
When replacing the drawer, make sureto push it firmly
into place. If it does not go all the way back,remove it
and rotate the drive mechanism 1/4 turn.Then push
the drawer back again.
Important Facts About Your Dispenser
, Donot add icefrom trays or bags to the storage bin. It may ,
not crush or dispensewell.
, Avoidoverfilling glasswith ice and useof narrow glasses.
Backed-up icecanjam the chute or cause the door in the
chute to freeze shut. If iceis blocking the chute,poke it
through with a wooden spoon.
, Beveragesand foods should not be quick-chilled in the ice
storage bin.Cans,bottles or food packages in the storage bin
may cause the icemaker or auger tojam.
, Tokeepdispensed icefrom missingthe glass,put the glass
close to, but not touching, the dispenseropening.
About the automatic icemaker.
Somecrushed ice may be dispensed eventhough you
selectedCubed.This happens occasionally when a few cubes
have been left in the crusher.
After crushed ice isdispensed,some water may drip from the
chute.
Sometimes a small mound of snow will form on the door in
the ice chute.This condition isnormal and usually occurs
when you have dispensed crushed ice repeatedly.Thesnow
will eventually evaporate.
Thefirst glass of water dispensed may bewarmer than the
following ones.This isnormal.
Dispensedwater is not ice cold. Forcolder water, simply add
crushed ice or cubes before dispensing water.
It isnormal for several cubes to bejoined together.
If iceis not usedfrequently, old icecubes will become cloudy,
taste stale,and shrink.
Icemaker Accessory Kit
If your refrigerator did not come already equipped with an
automatic icemaker,an icemaker accessory kit isavailable at
extra cost. Checkthe back ofthe refrigerator for the specific
icemaker kit needed for your model.

About the automatic icemaker.
A newly-installed refrigerator may take 12-24 hours to begin making ice.
Automatic Icemaker (onsomemodels)
Power Switch
When the refrigerator has been connected to
the water supply,slidethe power switch to the
ONposition.
The icemakerwill fillwith water when
it cools to 15°F.When the bin fills to the level
of the feeler arm, the icemaker will stop
producing ice.
Besure nothing interferes with the sweep of
the feeler arm.
About the water filter cartrid e. ConsomemodeU
Throw away the first few batches of iceto
allow the water lineto clear.
The icemaker will produce seven cubes
per cycle-approximately 100-!30
cubes in a 24-hour period, depending on
freezer compartment temperature, room
temperature, number of door openings and
other use conditions.
Youwill hear a buzzing sound each time the
icemakerfills with water.
Water filter cartridge
The water filter cartridge is located in the back upper right corner of
the refrigerator compartment.
Installing the filter cartridge
[] Fillthe replacement cartridge with water from the tap
to allowfor betterflow from the dispenserimmediately
after installation,
When to replace the filter on models []
with e replacement indicator light
There is areplacement indicator light for the water filter cartridge
on the dispenser. This light will turn orange to []
teti you that you need to replace the filter soon.
The filter cartridge should be replaced when the replacement
indicator light turns red or ifthe flow of water to the dispenser or
icemaker decreases.
When to replace the filter on models
without a replacement indicator light
The filter cartridge should be replaced every six months
or earlier if the flow of water to the dispenser or
icemaker decreases.

Line up the arrow on the cartridge and the cartridge holder. Place
the top of the new cartridge up inside the holder.
Do not push it up into the holder.
Slowly turn it to the right until the filter
cartridge stops. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.
As you turn the cartridge, it will
automatically raise itself into position.
The cartridge will move about a IA turn.
Run water from the dispenser for :1-:1/2gallons (about three
minutes) to clear the system and prevent sputtering.
Press and hold the RESETWATERFILTERpad (on some models) on
the dispenser for three seconds.
NOTE: A newly installed water filter cartridge may cause water
to spurt from the dispenser.
Removing the filter cartridge
Ifyou are replacing the cartridge, first remove the old one
by slowly turning it to the left. Do not pull down on the cartridge. A
small amount of water may drip down.
CAUTION: To reduce the risk associated with property damage due
to water leakage, read and follow instructions before installation
and use of this system. Installation and use lUST comply with all
state and local plumbing codes.
Filter bypass plug
You must use the filter bypass plug when a replacement filter
cartridge is not available. The dispenser end the icemaker will not
operate without the filter or filter bypass plug.

SmartWater I Water by Culligon I1_1
To use the filter bypass plug on Water by Culiigan" models,
you must first remove the filter adaptor from the cartridge holder by
turning it to the left.

To reduce the risk associated with choking, do not allow children under 3 years of age to have access to small parts
during the installation of this product. The disposable filter cartridge should be replaced every
6 months at the rated capacity, or sooner if a noticeable reduction in flow rate occurs.
For the maximum benefit of your filtration system, GE recommends the use of GESranded filters only. Using
GESranded filters in GE and Hotpoint _ refrigerators provides optimal performance and reliability. GE filters
meet rigorous industry NSF standards for safety and quality that are important for products that are filtering your water. GE has not
qualified non-GE-branded filters for use in GE and Hotpoint refrigerators and there is no assurance
that non-GE-branded filters meet GE's standards for quality, performance and reliability.

Care and cleaning of the refrigerator. GEAppliances.com
Cleaning the Outside
The dispenser drip area, (on some models) beneath the
grille,should be wiped dry. Water left in this area may
leave deposits. Remove the deposits by adding undiluted
vinegar to the well. Soak until the deposits disappear or
become loose enough to rinse away.
The dispenser cradle (on some models). Before
cleaning, lock the dispenser by pressing and holding
the Lock pad for 3 seconds. Clean with warm water
and baking soda solution-about a tablespoon (15
ml) of baking soda to a quart (1 I)of water. Rinse
thoroughly and wipe dry.
The door handles and trim. Cleon with a cloth dampened
with soapy water. Dry with a soft cloth.
Keep the outside clean. Wipe with a clean cloth
lightly dampened with kitchen appliance wax or mild
liquid dish detergent. Dry and polish with a clean,
soft cloth.
The stainless steel door panels and handles,
The stainless steel panels can be cleaned with a
commercially available stainless steel cleaner or a
similar product using a clean, soft cloth. Do not use
appliance wax, polish, bleach or products containing
chlorine on stainless steel doors and handles.
For best results, GE recommends using stainless
steel cleaner PMlOX311 with the WXIOX307
polishing cloth, or for convenience the SS cleaning
wipes, part number WXZOXZO00Z.
Do not wipe the refrigerator with a soiled dish cloth
or wet towel. These may leave a residue that can
erode the paint. Do not use scouring pads, powdered
cleaners, bleach or cleaners containing bleach because
these products can scratch and weaken the paint
finish.
Cleaning the Inside
To help prevent odors, leave on open box of baking
soda]in the refrigerator and freezer compartments.
Unplug the refrigerator before cleaning. If this is
not practical, wring excess moisture out of sponge
or cloth when cleaning around switches, lights or
controls.
Use warm water and baking soda solution-about
a]tablespoon (15 ml)of baking soda
to a quart (1 I)of water. This both cleans and
neutralizes odors. Rinseand wipe dry.
After cleaning the door gaskets, apply a thin layer
of petroleum jelly to the door gaskets
at the hinge side.This helps keep the gaskets from
sticking and bending out of shape.
Drain opening in freezer compartment. During
yearly cleaning, remove bottom freezer pan and
flush a solution of baking soda-1 teaspoon (5 ml)
and 2 cups (500 ml) of hot (not boiling) water-
through the drain linewith the help of a meat
baster.This will help eliminate odor and reduce the
likelihood of aclogged drain line,Ifdrain becomes
clogged, use ameat baster and baking soda
solution to force the clog through the drain line.
Avoid cleaning coldglass shelves with hot water
because the extreme temperature difference may
cause them to break. Handle glassshelves carefully.
Bumping tempered glass can cause it to shatter.
Do not wash any plastic refrigerator parts in the
dishwasher.
Behind the Refrigerator
Becareful when moving the refrigerator away from the wall. All
types of floor coverings can be damaged, particularly cushioned
coverings and those with embossed surfaces.
Pullthe refrigerator straight out and return it to position
by pushing itstraight in. Moving the refrigerator in a side
direction may result in damage to the floor covering or
refrigerator.
When pushing the refrigerator back, make sure you don't
roll over the power cord or icemaker supply line (on some
models).
Preparing for Vacation
For longvacations or absences, remove food and unplug the
refrigerator. Cleanthe interior with a baking soda solution of

REFRIGERATOR LOCATION
Do not install the refrigerator where the temperature
will go below 60°F(!6°C) because it will not run often
enough to maintain proper temperatures.
Install it on a floor strong enough to support it fully
loaded.
ROLLERS
The rollers have 3 purposes:
[] Rollersadjust sothe door closeseasily when opened
about halfway.

To adjust the rollers, remove the base grille by pulling itout

Turn the roller adjusting screws clockwise to raise the
refrigerator, counterclockwise to lower it. Usean adjustable
wrench (3/8" hex head bolt)or pliers.
To replace base grille, line up the clips on back of grille
between the bar and the bottom of the cabinet. Push
forward until grille snaps into place.

INSTALLING THE WATER LINE
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Recommended copper water supply kits are WX8×2,
WX8X3 or WX8Xa, depending on the amount of tubing
you need. Approved plastic water supply lines are GE
SmartConnecF Refrigerator Tubing (WX08X!0002,
WX08X!0006, WX08X!00!5 and WX08X!0025).
When connecting your refrigerator to a GEReverse
Osmosis Water System,the only approved installation
iswith a GERVKit.For other reverse osmosis water
systems, follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
If the water supply to the refrigerator is from a Reverse
Osmosis Water Filtration System AND the refrigerator
also has a water filter, use the refrigerator's filter bypass
plug. Using the refrigerator's water filtration cartridge in
conjunction with the ROfilter can result in hollow ice cubes
and slower water flow from the water dispenser.
This water line installation is not warranted by the
refrigerator or icemaker manufacturer. Follow these
instructions carefully to minimize the risk of expensive
water damage.
Water hammer (water banging in the pipes)in house
plumbing can cause damage to refrigerator parts and
lead to water leakage or flooding. Calla qualified plumber
to correct water hammer before installing
the water supply line to the refrigerator.
To prevent burns and product damage, do not hook
up the water line to the hot water line.
If you useyour refrigerator before connecting the water
line,make sure the icemaker power switch isin the OFF
position.
Do not install the icemaker tubing in areas where
temperatures fall below freezing.
All installations must be in accordance with local plumbing
code requirements.

The shutoff valve should have a water inlet with a
minimum inside diameter of 5/32" at the point of
connection to the COLD WATER LINE. Saddle-type
shutoff valves are included in many water supply kits.
Before purchasing, make sure a saddle-type valve
complies with your local plumbing codes. Install the
shutoff valve on the nearest frequently used drinking
water line.

[!] SHUT OFF MAIN WATER SUPPLY
[_ DRILL THE HOLE FOR THE VALVE
Choose a location for the valve that is easily
accessible. It is best to connect into the side of a
vertical water pipe. When it is necessary to connect
into a horizontal water pipe, make the connection to
the top or side, rather than at the bottom,
to avoid drawing off any sediment from the
water pipe.
Drill a !/4" hole in the water pipe (even if using a self-
piercing valve) using a sharp bit. Remove any burrs
resulting from drilling the hole in the pipe.TaRe care
not to allow water to drain into the drill. Failure to
drill a 1/4" hole may result in reduced ice production
or smaller cubes. F
[3] FASTEN THE SHUTOFF VALVE
Fasten the shutoff valve to the cold water pipe with
the pipe clamp.
Tighten the clamp screws until the sealing washer
begins to swell.
NOTE:Do not overtighten or you may crush the

Place the compression nut and ferrule (sleeve)for

Tighten the compression nut securely.

Placethe compression nut and ferrule (sleeve)
onto the end of the tubing as shown. On a GE
SmartConnect TMRefrigerator Tubing kit, the nuts
are already assembled to the tubing.
Insert the end of the tubing into the refrigerator
connection as for as possible. While holding the
tubing, tighten the fitting.
For plastic tubing from a GESmartConnecf"
Refrigerator Tubing kit, insert the molded end of the
tubing into the refrigerator connection and tighten
the compression nut until it is hand tight, then tighten
one additional turn with a wrench. Overtightening

Fasten the tubing into the clamp provided as shown

EXCLUSION OF IiVlPLIEDWARRANTIES--Your sole and exclusive remedy is product repair as provided in this
Limited Warranty. Any implied warranties, including the implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for
a particular purpose, are limited to one year or the shortest period allowed by law.

home use within the USA. If the product is located in an area where service by a GE Authorized Servicer is
not available, you may be responsible for a trip charge or you may be required to bring the product to an
Authorized GE Service location for service. In Alaska, the warranty excludes the cost of shipping or service
calls to your home.

without adequate disinfection before and after the system. Systems certified
for cyst reduction may be used on disinfected water that may contain filterable
cysts. EPA Establishment Number 10350-HN-005.

Health, and replacements, see performance data sheet. California Department
of Public Health Certification #05-1698. The contaminants or other substances
removed or reduced by this water filter are not necessarily in all users' water.
NOTICE
To reduce the risk associated with property damage due to water leakage:
- Read and follow use instructions before installation and use of this system.
- Installation and use MUST comply with all state and local plumbing codes.
- Do not install if water pressure exceeds 120 psi (8.2 bar). Ifyour water pressure
exceeds 80 psi, you must install a pressure-limiting valve. Contact a plumbing
professional ifyou are uncertain how to check your water pressure.
- Do not install where water hammer conditions may occur. If water hammer
conditions exist you must install a water hammer arrester. Contact a plumbing
professional ifyou are uncertain how to check for this condition.
- Do not install on hot water supply lines. The maximum operating water
temperature of this filter system is 100 ° F(38 ° C).
* Protect filter from freezing. Drain filter when temperatures drop
below 33°F (0.6°C1.
- The disposable filter cartridge must be replaced every 6 months atthe
rated capacity, or sooner if a noticeable reduction in flow rate occurs.
