network-attachedstoragetohomesandintheNASenclosure
addstheconvenience ofsmall businesses,providingyouacentral

Pleaseensurethatyouinstall thedevice driverbefore
connectingtheUSBport.Whenyoucompletethedriver
installation,rebootyourcomputer,connecttheNAS toyour
computerand access thedatavia"MyComputer".
Youcanalsoaccess dataintheNAS connectingitdirectly
usingtheEthernetcablewithyourcomputer.TheNASwillhavea
default IP of169.254.0.1whenconnected directly.
ConnectingtoyourNetwork
ConnectthepoweradaptertothebackpaneloftheNAS and
plugtheotherendtoawall outletorpowerstrip.Connectthe
networkcabletotheLAN portonthebackoftheNAS andthe
otherendofthenetworkcabletoaportonyourhub,switchor
router.
TheEthernetportontheNAS isAuto-MDI/MDIX,which
meansyoucanconnectitusingeitheracrossoveroradirect
networkcable.

TheNASfeaturesaweb-basedcontrolinterface tomanageyour
settings.Ifyouareusinganoperatingsystemotherthan
Windows,pleaserefertonextsectionlabeled"OtherOperating
Systems".

theIP address oftheNAS.

Forsecuritypurposes,yourlogininformationcanbechanged
viatheweb controlinterface.
Whentwonew NASsaresimultaneouslyconnectedtoyour
network,youneedtodistinguishbetweenthetwobytyping
"http://Storage-XXXX"withtheiruniqueMAC address.Please
refertothestickerontherearpanelfortheaddress and replace
XXXXwiththelast fourdigitsoftheMAC address.
ForexampleifyourNAS'sMACAddress is 00-14-3F-AA-01-68,
youwillneedtoenter"http://Storage-0168"intheURLaddress
bar.

ConfiguringtheNAS(OtherOperatingSystems)
Whenyouareplanning toperformadministrativetasksfrom
adifferent operating system,youwillneed toinput IP address of
theNAS inthebrowserURLaddressbar.
IfyoudonotknowtheIPaddress oftheNAS,youwillhave
todothis additionalprocedure.YouwillneedtoconnecttheNAS
directlytoyourcomputer,inputthedefaultIPaddress
169.254.0.1inthebrowserURLaddressbartoaccess theweb
controlpanel.

upgrade,reboot orreset theNAS
•SMBServer -configuretheSambafeatureofNASforthe
home/office networkfilesharingcapabilities.Youcanalso
create/removefolders and theirsharepermissions
•FTPServer -configuretheFTPfeaturesoftheNAS.You
mayadd/removeusersand their permissions
•DiskUtility -perform harddrivemaintenance routines
suchasScandiskand Format
•Status -SystemInformation

ThewelcomescreendisplaystheIPaddress,firmware
versionandtheharddriveinformationsuchastheharddrivetype
and storagespace available.
Theadministratormaychangethewebcontrolpanellogin
informationinhere.
YoumayalsochangethedefaulthostnameofyourNAS here.
Keepinmindthatafteryouchangethehostname,youwill need

touseittoaccess yourNAS.Forexample,ifyouchangedyour
hostnameto"FileServer",pleasetype"http://FileServer"to
access theWeb ControlPanelafteryousubmitted yourchanges.
TheLanguagesettingisusedtorecognizefileswith
characters otherthanEnglish.Ifyouhavetroublereadingyour
filesontheNAS,pleaseselect theappropriatelanguage.
WhenyouresettheNAS,eitherbythehardwareswitchor
throughthewebcontrolpanel,allthesettingswillreturntothe
defaultsettingincludingthehostname.Thedefaulthostnamewill
remainasStorage-XXXX (whereXXXXisthelastfourdigitsofthe
MAC address).
IP Configuration
Theadministratormayusethis optiontomanuallydefinethe
IPaddress oftheNAS.Ifthehub/router/switchinyournetwork
hasaDHCPserver,thentheNAS will automaticallybeassigned
anIP address.

TheNAS canalsoactasaDHCPserverwhenoneis not
presentinyournetwork.ThedefaultIPoftheNAS inDHCP
servermodeis"169.254.0.1" and anydevice thatis linked tothe
networkcontainingwill beassignedanIPof"169.254.0.x"
automatically

Maintenance
Theadministratorcanperform maintenance tasksonthe
NAS here.
Updatethefirmwareonlyifyouareexperiencingproblemswith
yourNAS.New firmwarefiles
maybe
availabletodownload(if
designed)fromwebsite http://www.gembird.nl,please,askusing
“Support” page.
Afterupdatingthefirmwareorresettingtofactorydefaults,
pleasemakesurethatyourestarttheNAS andrefreshyour
browser.

SambaAdministration
SambaenablesthecorefunctionoftheNASwhichis network
filesharing.
Thisoptionallowstheadministratortodeterminethe
folders/directoriestobeshared.Inhere,youcancreate,rename
anddeletefolders/directoriesinyourNAS.Allthe
folders/directoriesintherootdirectorythatwerepreviouslyin

yourharddrivebeforeitwasinstalledintheNAS will alsobe
showninthe"FolderList".
Thearrowkeysinthemiddleareusedtodetermineifthe
selected folder/directoryistobeshared.Passwordprotectionfor
eachsharedfoldercanalsobeimplemented.
Creatingfolders/directoriesthroughthewebcontrolpanel,
pleaseuseonlyEnglishalphabets
.
FTP Configuration
AbbreviatedfromFileTransferProtocol,FTPenablesfile
exchangebetweencomputers ontheInternet.TheNAS canwork
asastand-aloneFTP serverwhenit is assigned astaticIP.
AnonymousFTP isdisabled bydefault.
Theadministratorcandetermineiftheusershavereador
writepermissionandthe"HomeDirectory"will bethe
folder/directorytheanonymoususercanaccess uponlogging in.
TheAccount List displaysthecurrent FTP useraccounts,the

administratorcanadd newusers,modifytheirpermissions,
temporarydisableusersand deleteusers.

Disk Utility
Ifyouhaveinstalledanew harddriveintheNASthatis not
formatted,thiswill betheplace toformat it totheFAT32 format.
Since theNASsupportspowermanagement,youcanalso
determinethetimetheharddrivehavetobeinactiveinorderfor
theNAS toentersleep mode.
TheScanDiskfunctioncanbeusedtodetectpotential
problemswiththeharddrive.Clickontherefreshbuttonto
displaythescandiskresult.
