
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Pressure Build-up in a Water System
When the water heater operates, the heated water
expandscreatingapressurebuild-up.Thisisanatu-
ralfunctionandisoneofthereasonsforinstallinga
temperature and pressure-relief valve. If the cold
water supply line has a built-in water meter, check
valve, or pressure-reducing valve, a suitable expan-
siontankmustbeinstalledtopreventpressurebuild-
uporwaterhammereffect,otherwisethewarrantyis
void(see Figure 8).Anindicationofpressurebuild-up
isfrequentdischargesofwaterfromthereliefvalve.
If the relief valve discharges water on a continuous
basis,itmayindicateamalfunctionofthereliefvalve,
and a qualified service technician must be called to
havethesystemchecked,andtheproblemcorrected.
Filling the Water Heater
NEVER operate the water heater unless it is
completelyfilledwithwater.Failure to follow this
instruction can result in premature failure of the
water heater that is not covered by the warranty.
Checkthatallofthewater piping connections have
beenmade.Tofillthewaterheater:
1)Make sure that the water heater drain valve is
closedbyinsertingaflatheadscrewdriverintothe
slotontheheadofthedrainvalveandturningthe
knobclockwise .
2)Openthecoldwatersupplymanualshut-offvalve.
Thisvalvemustremainopenaslongasthewater
heaterisinuse.Neveroperatethewaterheaterwith
thecoldwatersupplymanualshut-offvalveclosed.
3)Tomakesurethewaterheateriscompletelyfullof
water,openhotwaterfaucetstolettheairoutofthe
waterheaterandplumbingsystem.Leavethefau-
cetsopenuntilaconstantflowofwaterisobtained.
4)Check all of the plumbing connections to make
suretherearenoleaks.
Gas Connections
DO NOT attempt to use this water heater with
anygasotherthanthetypeofgasshownonthe
water heater rating plate. Failure to follow this
instruction can result in property damage, per-
sonalinjury,ordeath.
The gas piping must be installed as indicated in
Figure 8.For the correct size of piping for this water
heater,consultCAN/CGAB149inCanadaand/orthe
NationalFuelGasCode,ANSIZ223.1in theUnited
States.Onlynewpipingwithcleanlycutthreadsmay
be used, together with a suitable sealing compound
that is approved for natural and propane gases. It is
mandatory that a readily accessible manual shut-off
valvebeinstalledinthegassupplyline.Thegassup-
plymanualshut-offvalvemustbeclosetothewater
heater.Adripleg(sedimenttrap)mustbeinstalledin
thegaslineaheadofthegascontrolvalvetoprevent
dirtfromenteringit.Aunionmustbeinstalledbetween
thegascontrolvalveandthegassupplymanualshut-
offvalveforeasymaintenanceofthewaterheater.
NEVERuseanopenflametotestforgasleaks.
Afire orexplosion could occur resulting in prop-
ertydamage,personalinjury,ordeath.
Thewaterheateranditsgasconnectionmustbeleak
testedbeforeplacingtheapplianceintooperation.To
leaktestthesystem:
1)Turn on the manual gas shut-off valve near the
waterheater.
2)Useasoapywatersolutiontotestallconnections
andfittingsforleaks.Bubblesindicateagasleak.
3)Correctallleaks.
Makesurethattheinletpressuretothewaterheater
doesnotexceedfourteen(14)inchesinW.C.(water
column)forbothnaturalandpropanegases.Pressures
inexcessof1/2poundpersquareinch(3.5kPa)can
damage the gas control valve, resulting in a fire or
explosion from leaking gas. For purposes of adjust-
ment,theminimuminletpressureisindicatedonthe
waterheaterratingplate.
Ifanypressuretestingofthegaslineisundertaken
at test pressures in excess of 1/2 psig (3.5 kPa),
thewaterheateranditsgassupplymanualshut-off
valvemustbedisconnectedfromthegassupplypip-
ing system, and the end of the pipe sealed with a
femalecap.Ifthetestingistobeundertakenatatest
pressurelessthan1/2psig(3.5kPa),thegassupply
manual shut-off valve must be closed.
For purposes
of adjustement, the minimum inlet pressure should be
one(1)inchwatercolumnabovetheoperatingmanifold
pressure.Ifmanifoldpressureistestedattheoutletpres-
suretapofthegascontrol,resultsshouldshow4”w.c.
