both. It reduces fuel consumption
in stop-and-go traffic by shutting
off the engine and operating on

whether the engine is operating
as a V-4 or V-8. The transitions
between fuel and electric power
are managed by a Power Control
Management System. Its seamless
operation can be tracked on the
hybrid’s power flow display, which
indicates the use of gasoline or
electric power— or a combination
of the two—or the charging of the
battery with Regenerative Braking.
At the heart of this exercise are
traditional Yukon strengths, which
include a Vortec engine, in this
case, a V-8 featuring Active Fuel
Management (AFM). In situations
where extra power isn’t needed—
such as highway cruising on level
roads — AFM deactivates four
of the eight cylinders. The driver-

hybrid mode 2: highWay / hauling
The electric portion of the hybrid
system features a 300-volt
nickel-metal hydride battery pack
that fits neatly under the second-
row seat cushions and between
Yukon’s stout frame rails without
compromising passenger room.
When called on, two motors
integrated within the transmis-
sion use battery power to drive
the vehicle.
When you apply the brakes,
Regenerative Braking uses
the motors in the transmission
as generators to decelerate the
vehicle while capturing and
storing that energy as electricity
in the battery pack. The energy
is then available for the next
acceleration cycle. You never
have to plug in at night.
At higher speeds, AFM uses
either V-4 or V-8 operation —
sometimes with supplemental
power from the electric motors
as conditions warrant. And the
transmission’s Tow /Haul mode
automatically and seamlessly
selects the best operating point
for the powertrain to deliver fuel
economy6and performance while
reducing gear “hunting” associat-
ed with trailering.
Yukon Hybrid features several
reduced-mass components,
including a lightweight aluminum
hood and tailgate, aluminum
wheels and low rolling-resistance
tires. Yukon Denali Hybrid fea-
tures a power liftgate, 22-inch
aluminum wheels and MagnaRide
suspension that combines tradi-
tional Yukon handling precision and
agility with a truly luxurious ride.

ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT/ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION
The Vortec V-8s in every Yukon half-ton model feature Active Fuel
Management (AFM). All eight cylinders operate during starting, idling
and torque-intensive tasks like accelerating, hauling heavy loads or towing.
But in everyday driving, once Yukon has reached cruising speed, AFM can
temporarily deactivate four of the eight cylinders, closing both intake and
exhaust valves and cutting fuel delivery for half of the cylinders. And for
2010, driver-selectable Fuel-Saver mode allows you to stay in 4-cylinder
mode longer. When you demand brisk acceleration or full torque to move a
load, the AFM activates all cylinders so full V-8 power is always right there,
on tap. In the case of the Vortec 6.2L V-8 standard in Yukon Denali, that
means 403 horsepower and best-in-class 417 lb-ft of torque. In keeping
with Denali luxury, the 6.2L incorporates Active Noise Cancellation.
AFM makes a significant contribution
to the unsurpassed conventional-
engine EPA-estimated fuel economy
(15 city/21 hwy. mpg) achieved by
Yukon models with the highly efficient
Vortec 5.3L V-8 engine. Enhancements
include cam-phasing, aluminum wheels
and a 3.08 axle ratio to contribute to
Yukon’s economical performance.
Along with the fuel savings and out-
standing performance, you will still
enjoy a 5400-lb trailering capacity.

yukon hydra-matic transmissions
All Yukon models with Vortec 6.2L and 5.3L V-8 engines are now equipped with a beautifully engineered 6-speed automatic
that combines smooth operation in a wide variety of conditions with an enjoyable element of personal control. Driver Shift
Control (DSC) lets you select a range of gears to suit variable driving situations. Shift into “M” and the currently engaged gear
number is illuminated, and all gears up to and including that one are accessible. As conditions vary, the range of available
gears can be changed by tap-shifting the plus-minus button up or down.
Both that 6-speed and the heavy-duty unit mated to the L96 Vortec 6.0L V-8 VVT of the Yukon XL ¾-ton feature driver-
selectable Tow/Haul mode. Tow/Haul mode reduces excessive shifting when towing or hauling a heavy load, and it automatically
engages Grade Braking. When descending hills, Grade Braking changes the timing of gear shifts to use the engine and the
transmission to slow the vehicle, reducing the demand on the brakes and helping to produce confident descents.

PULLING WELL OVER ITS WEIGHT
We engineered Yukon to excel in
real-life conditions. In trailering,
for example, we went beyond
sheer capability and engineered
Yukon so that you and your
passengers will be comfortable
while doing it. The robust Yukon
frame (shown on pages 02- 03)
provides the backbone. The com-
bination of horsepower and torque
we engineered into each Vortec
engine provides the necessary
motivation. Sophisticated trans-
mission Tow /Haul mode (page 05)
makes for smooth operation. And
StabiliTrak and traction control
help you remain in control from
the boat ramp to the highway.
If you do a lot of trailering, the
available trailer brake controller
is completely integrated with
Yukon’s electrical and ABS
systems, allowing your trailer’s
brakes to operate simultaneously
with the vehicle’s brakes. The
controller switch is conveniently
located on the lower left part
of the instrument panel. For seri-
ous trailering with SLE and SLT
models, check out the available
Heavy-Duty Trailering Package.
It includes an auxiliary external
transmission oil cooler, an external
engine oil cooler, a power steering
cooler, an increased-capacity
radiator and cooling fans.

Standard on all Yukon models, the
StabiliTrak stability control system
is engineered to heighten safety
on most road surfaces, even
during emergency maneuvers.
Sensors read the position of your
steering wheel, vehicle speed,
brake pressure, lateral accelera-
tion and turning rate, then feed
the data to an onboard computer.
If your Yukon is not responding
adequately to your steering input,
the computer adjusts engine
torque and brake pressure to any
individual wheel to help you keep
on track. StabiliTrak can even
help to mitigate the chance of
a rollover. Even with 2WD, Yukon
and Yukon Denali models with this
technology provide confidence
in varied driving conditions.
On 4WD models, including both
Yukon Hybrid and Yukon Denali
Hybrid, the Autotrac system pro-
vides seamless transitions from
2WD to 4WD. In normal condi-
tions, a computer chip monitors
slippage in the rear wheels. When
the system senses that all-wheel
traction is necessary, it converts
Yukon from 2WD to 4WD, instantly
increasing torque to its front axle.
For those seeking the ultimate,
Yukon Denali offers available full-
time AWD fully integrated with
StabiliTrak and other chassis con-
trols. Its ride and handling are on
a par with the outstanding power
of the Vortec 6.2L V-8.

TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM avaIlablE SIDE blIND ZONE alERT3aUTOMaTIC CRaSH RESPONSE
This advanced system keeps
track of tire pressure and alerts
you to low pressure through
the Driver Information Center—
indicating exactly which tire is
low. The system also sends a
message regarding tire pressure
each time you start the vehicle.
Does not monitor spare.
Side Blind Zone Alert (SBZA)
uses alternating radar beams to
sweep adjacent lanes of traffic,
covering a zone of approximately
one lane over from each side of
the vehicle. A dedicated SBZA
amber icon next to the in-mirror
turn-signal display lights up any
time there is a vehicle in your
blind spot, and the icon flashes
if you activate the turn signal.
In a crash, sensors around your
vehicle can automatically send an
alert to OnStar.
4An OnStar Advisor
is immediately connected to your
vehicle to see if you need help.
Even if you’re unable to respond,
the Advisor will use advanced
GPS technology to pinpoint your
exact location to direct emergency
help — even in areas of limited
cellular reception. The Advisor
can also relay critical crash infor-
mation to emergency responders
such as severity and type of crash
so the responders are better
equipped to treat you at the scene.
With Automatic Crash Response,
you get the help you need even if
you can’t ask for it. Visit onstar.com
for details.

any vehicle equipped with a passenger air bag. See the Owner’s Manual and child safety seat instructions for more safety information. 3Before making a lane change, always check the SBZA display, check the side and inside rear mirrors, look over your shoulder for
vehicles and hazards and start the turn signal. 4Call 1-888-4ONSTAR (466-7827) or visit onstar.com for details and system limitations. OnStar acts as a link to existing emergency service providers.
