The above drawing shows the correct placement of templates. The 2" wide opening in each template
should be centered witih the chalk lines. This will allow your painted lines to be 1" on both sides of the
chalk marks.

1:
:Using the Left and Right Lane Templates (A and B) and the 16 Straight Lane Templates (C), lay
out the square portion of the lane. Make sure the lane is centered on the basket, square to the backboard
and the free-throw line is 14’-11” from the backboard (with rim at 10’) and the outside with of the lane is
12’. You will have to reuse four of the Straight Lane Templates (C) if your court is to include an official-
sized baseline 4’ behind the face of the backboard.

2:
:When you are confident the lane templates are lined up properly, practice with the spray can on
newspaper to get a feel for the spray width and speed. Proceed to apply the spray to the prepared portion
of the court.

3:
:Once paint is sufficiently dry to move the templates without smearing lines, remove the templates
and proceed with laying out the top of the key using the size Key-Arc Templates (D). The top of the key
should intersect with the three-point chalk line. The template should make an exact arc if laid end to end
and line up with the previously painted lane. When templates are in place, proceed to apply spray paint.
Allow paint to set before removing templates.

4:
:Using the four Three-Point Arc Templates (E), spray the three-point line in sections. It is not
advisable to spray right up to the end of the templates as overspray will occur. Placement of a flat piece of
cardboard or paper on the end of the template will improve the end results. Move templates until entire
three-point line is painted.

:If your court size allows for playing surface behind the backboard as an official court, the final 5’ of
the three-point line on both the left and the right wing is straight and requires the use of the Straight Lane
Templates (C) to complete.

:If appropriate, lay out and spray the baseline using the Straight Lane Templates (C). This step
will depend on the amount of playing surface available for your court.

:The free-throw lane markings can be added using the Left and Right Corner Lane Templates
(A and B). Refer to the official court layout diagram to position (Figure 2).
