GeckoFlex
MODULAR UNIVERSAL FRAMES
The GeckoFlex 2 RU modular
platform is designed to meet the
demands of today’s broadcast
facility and outside broadcast van
signal conversion and distribution
requirements. From analog audio
through 1080p/3G video, the
GeckoFlex frame supports a
broad range of signal formats and
functions, all in the same frame,
all at the same time.
KEY FEATURES
From single- and multi-function modular
products to an Ethernet-based control
system for configuring and operating
modules across racks and facilities,
Grass Valley™offers a full range of
signal-processing products, whatever the
application.
A key component of our modular product
range is the GeckoFlex™frame, which is
designed for small production settings,
mobile environments, and professional
audio video applications.
The GeckoFlex system is a flexible,
cost-effective modular system built
around a compact robust 2 RU frame.
It can be used to build infrastructures
that can handle the complete range
of modern broadcast signals with
just one enclosure type. The frame
supports everything from audio to video
signals, standard- to high-definition (SD
to HD) formats, and copper to fiber
infrastructures.
Highly Serviceable
The GeckoFlex system is also the
most serviceable system available. Its
modules, dual power supplies, fans,
network interface card and reference
distribution circuits can all be swapped
out from the front of the frame. In fact,
not only are the network interface cards
swappable, but the IP address and the
frame’s identity remain with the frame,
not the card.
Because HD modules and most other
modules provide industry-standard
SNMP monitoring of signal formats and
conditions—as well as the module’s
operation, identification, and status—
you can easily integrate a GeckoFlex
frame into broadcast and IT monitoring
schemes with an optional network
interface card.
Reference Distribution Buses
The dual reference distribution buses
of the GeckoFlex frame allow you to
share reference signals within the
frame (Figure 1). Unlike conventional
systems, the reference inputs are still
available on individual cards and you can
swap out reference circuits from the
front of the frame to service them. The
distributed reference can accept bi-level,
tri-level, and AES audio sync inputs
and feed all modules requiring a similar
reference—saving on additional analog
video distribution modules, frames, and
the power dissipation associated with an
old-fashioned reference system.

Fiber Ready
A unique feature of the GeckoFlex
platform is a fiber-ready system that
enables you to upgrade all SD/HD
dual-rate modules to fiber inputs or
outputs. These highly compact inputs
and outputs, combined with our fiber-
ready philosophy, makes these upgrades
incredibly space-efficient: two fiber
connections fit in the equivalent space of
one BNC connector.
Calculating Power Consumption
To decide whether a particular set of
modules will fit within a frame that
does not have fan cooling, simply add
the rated power consumptions of the
modules to be mounted in the frame.
These power values can be found on
the latest versions of the module’s
data sheets. Please note that you do
not include the power needed by the
network card, fans or other assemblies,
just the modules.
If the total power required by these
modules is less than the power rating
of the frame then it can support your
application.
It it critical not to exceed the overall
environment ratings for the frame. If
you have any doubt or questions, please
contact Grass Valley Customer Support &
Services for assistance (see last page).
