PREFACE
Electronics ofmetaldetectorsusedifferentprinciples,someofthemhaveproved inpracticetobe more
successfuland reliablethan others.Unquestionably,the mostpopular,the mosteffectiveand affordable
metaldetectorsfunction on the principlesofInduction Balance/IB/and PulseInduction/PI/. Thismakesthe
problemofground neutralization crucial.On“heavy”soilsand when theinduction balancedetectorscannot
be used,the pulseinduction detectorsbecomepreferable.Theirverylowfrequency makesthemefficient
even onhighlymineralizedand saltyground.Thisexplainswhyalmostallwell-knownmanufacturershave
pulseinduction models.Withthistype ofdetectors,the searchcoil isnotpartofthe resonancecircuit,buta
self-contained generatorstartsthe pulsesignal.The parametertobe analyzed isthe transitiontime/the
position of the pulsefront/.
Pulseinductiondetectorsareveryefficientatprofound searchastheyallowscanning withlarge square
heads/frames/ofsizefrom1mx1mto2mx2mand even larger.Atthe sametime,the maindisadvantage
ofthistechnologyisitslowcapabilitytodistinguishferrousfromnon-ferrousmetals.Thisnarrowsotherwise
the entirehegemonyofpulseinductiondetectors.The experiencewiththeseteachesthattheyalone are
difficulttouse,especiallywhen theyareequippedwithlarge loopsorframes.Pinpointing ofsmallmetal
objectsishardandtheiridentification unreliable.The twotechnologiesadvantagesand disadvantages
complementoneanotherand theyarealmostalways used togetherespeciallywhen apulseinduction
detectorwithalargesearchframeisneeded.Firstyou scan withtheinduction balancedetectortoeliminate
tinyand nearthe surfaceobjectsand then the pulseinductiondetectorwithitsdeep searchframewill
identifybiggerobjectsdeeperinthe ground.Moreover,verydeep smallandlarge metalobjectscan be
detected withease.The onlything thathastobe done istoswitchbetweenthe twotechnologiesand
change the searchheadsinturn.

The induction balancedetectorhasitscontrolknobsand switchespositioned intheleft onthecontrolpanel,
the right portion of whichisforthe pulseinduction detectordigitaldisplayanditscontrolbuttons.
The selection ofthe mode isdone withabutton inthe middleofthe panel.It isthisbutton thatprovidesyou
touseonlythe advantagesof thesemetaldetectiontechnologies.

II PREPARATIONFORUSE
2.1. Assembly
You do notneed tohavespecialskillsto
assemblethe tool–itiseasy todo.You only
need tofollowthesesteps:
-Placementofsearchhead:
Removethe nutandthen tighten the search
head,fixthe detectorrod intothe searchhead
clamp,insertthe screwback intoitsholeand
securewiththe nut. Nowyou haveassembled
the head withrod.

-Adjustmentoftherod length:
a)Turnthe lock couplerclockwisetoloose
position
b)Pulloutthe carbonhandlebeneaththatof
the detector.Adjustthelengthsothatthe
searchheadisat2to5cmabovethe ground
when standing and holding thedetectorloose
byyourside.Then lock the couplerback into
itsoriginalposition.
-Connectthecabletothesearchhead:
a)Wrap the searchhead cableround the rod.
Leaveitloosesothatyou can levelthesearch
head whenscanningunevenground.
b)Plug the searchhead cableintothe
correspondingsocket(forIBand PI)inthe
controlunitback panel,nexttighten the
connectorwiththe attached nut.
2.2. Batterycharging
Yourmetaldetectorisequippedwithabuilt-in
batteryand itneedsno otherbatteriesforits
work.
If the detectorison,turnitoff withthe POWER
switch(the instrumentisturned off when the
switchisinmiddleposition).Plug inthe
chargingunitcableintothechargingsocketin
the back panelofthe controlunit. Then plug the
chargingunitintothe socket. During the
chargingprocess the chargingunitred indicator
ison.The batteryisfullycharged for12hours.
One batterycycleprovidesa20-40-hourswork
of the the instrument.
You canprolong thebatterylifecycleifyou
workwithheadphoneswhichareless energy
consuming than the built-inspeakers.
BATTERYTESTING: If, on turningthe
instrumenton,the batterystateindicator– BAT
ison,butthe detectorstill doesnotstart, if
thereisasound butyetveryweakorifthe
instrumentcannotbe adjusted properlyand is
unstable, then you need tocharge the batteries.
2.3. Use ofheadphones
You can connectthe headphonessothatyou
arethe onlyone tohearthe sound inthem.
Using headphoneswill alsoenhancethebattery
efficiency and lifecycleand theyfacilitatethe
sound identification toend up withbetter
detection (search)results.Toconnectthe
headphones,simplyplug theirconnectorinto
the PHONEsocketon the controlunitfront
panel.Onthis,the built-inspeaker
automaticallyswitchesoff. The GRIZZLY
TWINSsetisequippedwithapairof
professionalstereo headphones.
SAFEHEARING:
Toprotectyourhearing beawareofthe
following:
-Beforeputting the headphoneson makesure
you haveadjusted the volumeofthe sound to
the lowestlevel.Then you can adjustthe sound

toyourliking.
-Donotturnthe sound up too much.
Continuousexposuretoloud noisesoundscan
causepermanent loss of hearing.
−Onceadjustedtotaste,the volumeofthe
sound shouldnotbe increased.Beforelong
yourhearing will adapttothesound andyou
will be abletohearthe signalsfromthe
detectors.
MIND THETRAFFIC:
Donotwearthe headphonesinheavy traffic.
Althoughcertainheadphonesallowyou tohear
soundsfromthe environment, using themat
noisy placescan be risky.

IV. HOWTOWORK WITHTHEPULSE
INDUCTIONMETALDETECTOR
GrizzlyTwinsDigitalPI wasdesigned bya
newtechnologyinwhichthe signal'back
integration'used withthistype ofinstruments
(PulseInduction)wasreplaced bya
contemporaryanalog-to-digitalconverterand a
microprocessor.
The POWER switchisnormallyinmiddle
position,the detectorbeing turned off. Turnthe
switchtothe left (towardsIB)andtherewillbea
slightclick,whichmeansthatthe instrumentis
working inIBmode.Todisablethe mode leave
the switchinmiddlepositionand turnthe
POWER switchright(towardsPI),you will hear
aclick thatmeansthe PImode isenabled.To
turnoff simplyleavethe POWER switchin
middleposition.
Turnthe POWER switchright(towardsPI)and
you will hearaquietclick,the instrumentisnow
working inPImode.Toexitthe mode,leavethe
POWER switchinmiddleposition.

Onpressing one ofthese
buttonsyou decreaseorincreasethesilent
threshold.
ZERO orreset. The button also
confirmseachchange ofaparameterinthe
menu.

The greaterthisnumberis,the less sensitive
butmorestabletheinstrumentwill be.Incases
when the ground signalscannotbe eliminated

byadjusting thethreeparametersof Ground
adjust,thisnumberhastobe manually
increased.
4.4 Ground adjust/ fig.4.7./ –Thisfunction
hasthree softwareapproachestoneutralizethe
groundat different scan modes.
-off(static)- Groundbalanceisturned off or
thisisalsocalledstaticmode or 'ifthereisan
object, thereisasignal'.
-adaptive - Adaptiveprocessing ofthe signal-
1st dynamicmode.
*Whenholdingthe searchheadstill abovea
targetthe signaldiesaway,theheadmustbein
motion sothat the detectorproducesasound.
-fixing - fixed softwareGround balance
adjustment -2nd dynamicmode.

*Thismode isacombination ofthe previous
twomodeswiththe searchhead being in
motion all the time.Keep inmindthatthismode
isslower,i.e.ifyoureachoutacointowards
the searchhead in adaptive mode,then takeit
awayand back again,the instrumentwill detect
the coin,whilein fixing modeand especially
when the searchspeed ishigher,itislikelythat
the target doesnot produceasound.

Lift the searchhead to40 –50 cmabovethe
groundand turnthe detectoron.
A TUNE.. message will be displayed and a

parallelwithit.
If PIDIGITALTWINSproducesasignal,press
the ZERObutton,ifthereisstill noeffect, press
the plusarrowand then ZEROagain.Repeat
the stepsofthisprocedureuntil the instrument
doesnotdetectthe ground anylongerat
normalspeed ofthe searchhead.When doing
this,makesuretherearenometalobjectsin
the ground.
If you havereached toasilentthresholdof15
and the instrumentstill,whenevermoved,goes
off, change thesetting for Menu:Ground
adjust.
If the thresholdis15 and neitherofthe menu
adjustmentsof Ground adjust workandthe
instrumentkeepsproducingground signals
when moved,youmayhavetoconsiderthatthe
placeyou havechosen toscan hasagreat
dealofmetaltrashinit. Tryadifferentspotor
asan extremeoption at'severeground',you
mayhavetomanuallyadjustthe instrument's
parameterstobe abletosearchthe lot. This
can be donebychanging manuallythe setting
forMenu:GuardIntervallikethis.If on turning
the detectoron,the TUNE... countdownstops,
forexample,at30,thenthe value istobe
increased bymeansof(-) and (+)buttonsto
31andthen confirmed withENTER.Exitthe
menu (ESC)andpress the ZERObutton.Test
the instrumenton therespectivetype ofground
and ifnecessary,increasethe valueto32.Mind
thatthisisapplicabletoplaceswithagreat
numberofmetaltrash;normally,high valuesof
thisparameterwillnotincreasethe instrument's
sensitivity.
If you wishtoincreasethedetector'ssensitivity
inthe abovecase,youneed tosetthe
parameterstolowervalues,i.e.29,28,27in
the abovesaidway.
When manuallychanging the Guardinterval
setting,the instrumentmaybecomeunstable
and less sensitive,butan experienceduser
maymanipulatethesetoworkwiththedetector
on groundsthatarenormallyconsidered
unsearchable.
V. HOWTO WORKWITHTHEIB
DETECTOR
Usethe POWERswitchtoturnon/off the
instrumentaswellastoswitchbetweenthe IB
and PImode.Normallythe switchisinmiddle
position,then,the instrumentisoff. Turnthe
POWERswitchtothe left (towardsIB)and you
will hearalowclick,thismeansthe detectoris
started inIBmode.
Toturnoff leavethe POWERswitchinmiddle

•Discriminationmodeswitch:The switchhas
twopositions:1–Left position (GEB),inthis
mode thediscriminationisoff, i.e.the
instrumentdetectsall metalsand producesa
consistentsound;2-Rightposition (DISK),
when the instrumentdiscriminatesthe metals,
.i.e.atdetection ofnon-ferrousmetaltargetsit
givesoutaconsistentsoundversusbroken
and inconsistentsignalswhen detected ferrous
objects.

•TUNE knob(foradjustmentofthecritical
signal).The TUNE knobcontrolsthe silent
threshold.Turntheknobrightandyou will hear
aslowlyincreasingsignal,withthe helpofthe
knob setthissignalveryweak.Thisweaksignal
iscalled criticalsignal(silentthreshold).The
instrumentisthemostsensitivewhenitworks
at the signalthresholdsetting.
•DISK knob (toincreaseordecreasethe
discriminationlevel).It controlsthe instrument's
levelofdiscrimination thediscriminationbeing
higheratgreaternumbersatthe DISK knob,
namelythe instrumentwill produceaconsistent
signal(Discrimination ON)whenitdetectspurer
non-ferrousmetalsand itssound will be broken
and inconsistentwhenthe detected objectis
iron.
•GEB knob (tocontrolmineralized ground
detection):Turntheknob left orrightto
neutralizethesignalsfromtheground,i.e.this
controlallowstoground balancethe instrument
inIBmode.
5.2. WorkwiththedetectorinIBmode
Switchthe detectorinIBmode (POWER button
frommiddletoleft positiontowardsIBuntilyou
hearaclick).Disablethe dicrimination function
(the DISK switchisturnedtowardsGEB)(fig.
5.2.)Adjustthesilentthresholdlevelwiththe
TUNE knob.Lift the instrumentto40-50cmoff
the ground.Whileholding the searchhead at
about40-50 cmabovethe ground:1.Turnthe
TUNE knob tothe rightmostposition;2.Putthe
GEB knob inmiddleposition;3.Keep the
instrumentinthe air.You will hearastrong and
continuoussignal.4.Withthe instrumentstill in
the air,nowslowlyturnthe TUNE knob tothe
left, the signalbecoming weakerand weakeror
even dying out(Thisisthe silentthreshold.The
instrumentdetectsdeepesttargetswhenyou
hearitssignallikehumming);5.Lowerthe

searchhead to2-5cmabovethe ground (down
position); MIND THEFOLLOWING:
.If,on itslowering tothe ground,the
instrumentproducesasignal,dothe following:
lift thedetectoragainat40-50cmabove the
ground and slightlyturnleft theGEBknob.
Then placethe searchheadat2-5cmabove
the ground again(downposition)and check ifit
will produceasignal.If thereisno sound from
the speaker,you havedonethe GROUND
BALANCE(i.e.the detectorisreadytobe used
attheseground conditions),butifitstill goesoff
when approachingthe ground,repeatthe
abovedescribed steps(underlined text)until
the instrumentissilentwiththe searchhead
being moveddownwardsclosertothe ground.
.If the instrumentproducesasignalwhen
being lifted,do the following: lift thesearch
head40-50 cmabove theground and
slightlyturntheGEBknobtotheright. Then
placethe searchhead at2-5cmabovethe
ground(downposition)and lift itagain.If you
can hearasignalfromthe instrument, repeat
the abovestepsagain.
The instrumentisGROUND BALANCEDifit
doesnotgooff when youlowerorraisethe
searchhead(thatmeansthatthe detectoris
readytobe used).
Incasethatthe instrumentproducessignals
bothon lowering towardsand liftingfromthe
ground,then decreasethesensitivityby really
slightlyturning theTUNEknob left. Afterthe
settingshavebeenmade,you cantestthe
instrument. Whilescanning,holdthedetector
firm,makeasmoothand easy swingwiththe
searchheadat2-5cmoverthe ground.Now
you can beginsearching.
5.3.Testand use oftheinstrumentinthe
open
(1) Lookforaparcelwhereyouarecertain
thereareno metalobjects.
(2) Placeatargetobjectofthe type you
wouldliketosearchinthe ground.If you usea
goldobjectforthetest, makesureyou have
marked the placewhereyou haveburieditor
you might not be abletofind it later.
(3) Holding the searchhead at2-5cmabove
the ground,slowlyswing itleft and rightover
the buried object.
V. CAREANDMAINTENANCE
1. If the detectordoesnot workproperly, one
possiblereason mightbe aweakbattery.
Recharge it.
2. The searchheadplug mustbe dryorthe
detectorwill notperformproperly.It can be
used onlyafterhaving been dried up well.
3. Do notuse thedetectorinwetand
rainyweatheroratveryhigh temperatures.
4. Donot put the searchhead closetoovens
orotherhot objects.
5. The instrumentcomeswithwarrantyand
itcouldberepairedifthewarrantyisstill validat

the timeofthe instrument'sfailure.However,
the warrantyisconsideredvoidifthe
instrument'ssealhasbeen removedbythe
user.
Useful advice
•Usehigh-qualityheadphones.
•Bepersistentinyourpracticeand soonyou
will haveyourownstyleof searching.
•If you havedifficultieswhen using the
instrument, read thismanualover.
False signal
Radioandtelevisionsignalscaninterferewith
the instrument. Toavoidthis,step furtheraway,
decreasethe silentthresholdand slowdown
yourpace.
Highlymineralized soilsandwetsandsnormally
producedistinctand staticsignals,too.If so,
decreasethe silentthresholdand goon
scanning.
If you holdametaltoolinonehandtohelpyou
digoutdetected targets,bearinmindthatitwill
causeGRIZZLYTWINStoproduceasignal
wheneveryou putitclosertothe searchhead.
Bettercarrythistoolinyou rucksack on your
back orhung up on yourbelt. Inpractice,to
gainsatisfactoryskillswiththe GRIZZLY
TWINS,atleast30-40 hoursofworkare
needed.

comeacross afindoryou digout avaluableobject (even notcertainofitsvalue),contactalocalor

landscape.Fill up allyourdigs.Usethe instrumentatsafeplacesonly.If youfindrubbish,takeit
