The F-16C FightingFalconis a tacticalfighter developed
from the F-l6A PLUS. Sincethe decision to adoptthe
F-16 u'as first reachedby the USAF, vrious improve-
mentsto thedesignwereproposed
asthe aircraftwasput
throu-ehits paces.
Known collectively asthe Multi-Stage
ImprovementPlan (MSIP), theseupgradeswere first
appliedto rheF-16C.
andtheyincluded replacingthe
APG-66FireConnol Systemwith theAPG-68 andfitting
out *ith improved target acquisition and IFF (Identify
Friend,foe) capabilities.
Also, load-outwith the new
AIM-120 (AMRAAM) provided
theFalconwith asimulta-
neousmultiple targeting
systemthatgreatlyincreasedthe
combatcapabilitiesof the
aircraft.
Theenginebaywascon-
vertedto accept
eitherthe Pratt& Whitney F-100 or the
GeneralElectricF-l 10.Themost
significantchangeto the
outward appearanceof the Falcon is the extensiveECM
(Electronic
CounterMeasures)
gear
housed
in thefillet of
the vertical stabilizer, increasing its length and giving it a
characteristic swollen or ballooned appearance.
The most distinguishing characteristic of the Block 40/42
Night Falcon is the "lantern pod" which gives the aircraft
both night and all-weather ground attack capabilities. The
AN/AAQ- 14 pod installed on the left side of the air intake
contains FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) gear which
enables day-or-night long range ground taget acquisition,
while the AN/AAQ-l3 navigation pod installed on the
right side of the air intake contains both FLIR and TFR
(Tenain-following Radar) gear, giving the aircraft
superlative nighttime low-altitude penetration capabilities.
