Adjustingthe paper
If thepaperis crooked,pullforwardthe paper releaselever
(30)thusfreeingthe paperfromallpressureandthenadjust
it sothatitis parallelwiththe paperbail (23). Returnthe
lever30toitsoriginal position.
Paper supports
This feature(19) preventsthe paperfrom cominginto
contactwiththebackofthe machineorfrom touchingthe
table.
Itis particularly usefulwhen typing stencils.Italso
enablesonetosee clearlythe written text.To bringthe
paper supportsinto position,onehasmerelyto raiseone
of
the
twoarmsrestingagainstthebackprotectionplate(28).
Transparentcard holders (guide lines)
Thecard holders(20
and
24) allowonetotypebothatthe
topofthe paper,even beforeit passes underthe paperbail
(23),
andtotheveryendofthe sheet.Theyalso serveas
line guides, sincethetopofthe graduation(26) indicates
the heightofthe writing line.Each vertical division marks
the exactcentreofa character(seeillustration).Itisthere-
fore quiteeasyto replaceinits correct positionany docu-
mentwhichhashadtoberemoved.

frontfeed rollers, which enableoneto watchthe progress
of the paperandhave ample warningofwhentheendof
thepageisreached.
Movable paperside guide
On theleft-handsideofthe papertablethereisa guide(15)
whichcanbe moved sideways.It ensuresthat sheetsof
paperare always insertedinthesame place,andhavethe
same left-hand margin without havingtoseta new margin
stopeachtime.Italso enablesa sheettobe re-insertedin
theright positionfor corrections.

Platen releasefor:
a) writing betweentwo lines.Whenthe selector11
is oppositethe whitedot,the platenis free,butthe
previousline spacingwillbe re-engagedassoonas
the selector11is returnedtoits original position.This
deviceis particularly usefulwhenyouwishto returnto
the original spacing after makingan additionor correc-
tion betweenthe lines.
b) writingonlinedpaper.Ontheotherhand,itispossible,
by pullingoutthe left-hand platenknob(10)tofreethe
platen completelysothatitwillnot re-engagethe
original spacing.This proceduremaybeusedwhen
typingon lined paperor forms,for whichnoneofthe
threeline spacingsare suitableor,for example,when
re-insertinga page already begun.Pushintheknob10
to re-engagethe platenandthelinespacing.
Drawing pencil lines quickly
To drawverticalor horizontal lines quickly,insertthe sharp
pointofa pencilinoneofthe holes(21)ofa card holder,
and eithermovethe carriage sideways,orturnthe platen.

Intermediate table(ontheHERMES3000only)
This
feature,
(14)is extremely usefulwhen correctingthe
various copiesoradding hand-written noteswithout having
to removethe paperfromthe machine.
Margins
The
stops—the
positions(18and25)of whichare clearly
visibleinthepaperbail(23)onthe "3000"— areusedto
fix
theleftand right-hand marginsofthe text.Tosetthe
left-hand margin,movethe carriagetowherethefirsttyped
signisto appear,andpullforwardthelever12.The margin
is automaticallysetinthe required position.Forthe right-
hand margin, followthesame procedure, using lever32,
after havingmovedthecarriageto wheretheendoftheline
is required.
To movetheleft-hand marginfurthertotheleft,pullforward
lever12whilst movingthe carriageintothenew position.
Then releasethe lever12.Tomovethe right-hand margin
moretothe right,pull towardthelever32withthe middle
finger,whilstatthesametimepressingwiththeindexfinger
on button31tomovethe carriage.Letthe carriage slideto
wherethenew marginis required, brakingthe movement
slightlybyrestingthethumbonthe small plate34orforthe

Neutralizethe ribbon, raisethe paper supports(19)and
cleanthetypethoroughly. Insertthestencilandtakecareto
typevery regularly.
Choosingthe ribbonand spools
To function smoothlyontheHermes3000orMedia,a ribbon
mustbewoundona spool havingthesamefittingsasthe
HermesorDIN spools,and measuring13mminwidth.
Reversingthe ribbon direction
a) Automatically.Whenthe ribbonhas wound itself
completelyontoone spool,itwill automatically reverse
andwindbackontothe
other.
b) By hand.If,forsome reasonor other,youwishto
changethe directionofthe ribbon yourself,push either
forwardsorbackwardsoneoftheribbon guides(9or37).

Thisisa devicebymeansof whichthe carriagemoves
automaticallyfrom columntocolumn.
a) Setting tabulator stops
The scaleonthe paperbail(23) correspondstothe
tabulator stops.If,for example,youwantthe carriageto
stopatthe30thspace,moveitalong untiltheslotofthe
typebarguide(22)is opposite point30onthe paperbail
scale,
andthen pressthekey+ (3).Repeatthesame
operationfor other stops.Ateach successive pressure
on thekeyTAB(4)the carriagewillstopinthepre-

Maintenance
Cleaningthe
characters
To maintaina clearimpression,cleanthetypeface regularly
—brushingfrombacktofront
—with
the brush provided.If
certaintype facesare cloggedwithhardink,thiscanbe
removedbytappingthemwitha brushmoistenedwithpetrol.
Cleaningthe platen
The rubber platen shouldonlybe cleanedwith alcohol
takingcareto protectthecard holders. Neveruse petrol,
benzineorany other liquid whichmaybe harmfultothe
rubber.
Cleaningthecard holders, spacebarand
painted parts
Important:
Avoidthecardholderscomingintocontactwithpetrol,
alcoholorany diluting agentasthiswould affect their
transparency. Cleanthemwitha cloth moistenedin
soapy water.
Likewisethespacebar,thecarriage sidesand platen knobs
should neverbe cleanedwith organic solvents (petrol,
paraffin,
turpentine,trichlorethylene,alcohol,acetone,etc.)
butwith soapy water.
On the other hand,a cloth slightly moistenedwith alcohol
maybeusedto cleanthe metal parts.
Cleaningthe machine
Cleanthe machine regularly withoutdismantlingit.Remove
the rubber particlesanddustbymeansofthesoft brush
whichisalso provided.The parts whichmustbe cleaned
in thiswayare perfectly accessible,andthe utmostcare
shouldbe takennottobreakthe springsor damage other
parts.
Oiling

The machine shouldnotbe oiledtoo frequently,asthis
encouragesdustto collect. Neveroilthe segment slots
in whichthetypebars move,orthetypebars themselves.
We strongly adviseyoutohavethe machine
cleaned
and
checked
atleastoncea yearbya HERMESagent.
