X-VAC HYDRO EXCAVATOR MACHINES
X-VACHydroExcavatormachinesaredesignedtoremovematerialinanundergroundenvironment.
Thesesystemsoperateunderhighpressurecondionswithlowwaterow.Therefore,operatorsof
thesesystemsmustbeawareofpossiblehazards.Thisisnotacompletelistofallpossiblehazards,
butrepresentstypicalhazardsandtypesofhazards.Atallmes,theoperatorisresponsibleforthe
properuseofthemachine.
Operators of X-VAC Hydro Excavator machines should be aware of the following safety
warnings:
•Usingthismachineforpurposesotherthanhydroexcavaonisnotrecommended.
•Waterhosethatisdamagedintothebraidedliningmustberepairedorreplaced.
•Fingsusedonwaterhosemustbeofatypeandinstalledinamannerthatisapprovedby
thehosemanufacturer.
•Thehandgunisdesignedtoshutoautomacallywhentheactuatorhandleisreleased.
Neveruseaforwardjetnozzlethatwillnotturnowhenreleased.
• Thehandgunremainspressurizedaeruse.Aershungowatersupply,squeezeactuator
handletorelievepressurebeforestoringorbeforedisconnecngthehandgunfromhose.
•Neveroperatethewatersystemwiththereliefvalvesremoved,orimproperlyadjusted
Themainreliefvalveissetat3500psi.Donotoperateatpressurereadingshigherthanthese
unlessthemanualspecicallystatesthatthesystemhasbeendesignedforhigherpressures.
•Neverwalkunderraisedcomponentssuchashydraulicallyactuatedtanks,doors,etc.
Wheneverthesecomponentsareraised,propsmustbeusedtoprotectworkerswhomust
workunderthem.
•Neveroperatethemachineinastaonaryposionwithoutrstsengthebrakes,andshiing
therearaxleoutofthedriveline.Alwaysusewheelchocks.
•Nevermovethevehiclewiththeboominaraisedorotherwiseunsecuredposion.
•Alwaysturnounitpowerwhenmovingthevehicle.
•Alwayscheckforoverheadobstruconsbeforeoperangboom.

POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT EXHAUSTER AND WATER PUMP UNITS
Thismachineisacombinaonvacuumandhighpressurewaterunitforexcavaonofsoil.
Thevacuumpumpisarotarylobe,posivedisplacementexhauster.Duringoperaonofthe
vacuumsystem,materialispickedupattheendofthesuconlineandpneumacallyconveyed
throughtheintaketubes,theboomhose,andtothedebristank.Asthematerialentersthelarger
areaofthedebristankthevelocityoftheairowisreducedandthematerialdropsoutoftheair
stream,selingattheboomofthetank.Thespentairowsthroughtheballcheckvalve,and
throughametalscreeninthecentrifugalscrubberexternallylocatedatthefrontofthebodyand
thoughanalscreenattheblowerinlet.Atthispointthelteredairowenterstheexhauster
andisexpelledthroughasilencer/muertotheatmosphere.
Aposivedisplacementtriplexplungerwaterpumpprovidesthewaterpressureandwaterowto
thehydroexcavaonnozzleaachedtotheendofthehandgunorlance.
Inthewatersystem,thewaterowsfromthewatertanks,mountedoutboardofthedebris
tank,throughacrossovermanifold,throughthewaterpumpfeedline,intothesuconsideof
thepump.Thepressurizedwateristhenpumpedforwardtothewatercontrolvalveandrouted,
dependingontheposionofthevalve,eithertothehosereelforhydroexcavaon,orbyreturn
linestothewatertank.Thevacuumandwatersystemcanbeusedsimultaneouslywhenexcavat-
ingsoil.Thisallowsconveyanceofushedoutmaterialsandwaterintothedebristank.
CONTROLS AND GAUGES
Itisimportantfortheoperatortofullyfamiliarizehim/herselfwiththelocaon,appearanceand
funconofthevariouscontrolsandgaugesonanynewX-VACHydroExcavator.Pleasereadthis
seconcarefully,andrefertoitwheneveranyseconofthemanualdescribesacontrolwhichyou
cannotidenfy.
Severalcontrolsaremountedinthechassiscabitself.Thesecontrolsallowtheoperatortoengageand
disengagethewaterpump,exhauster,andhydraulicsystem.Inaddion,amainpower
indicatorlightandswitch,andalowwaterwarninglightandswitchareamongthestandardcontrolsin
thechassiscab.Thewaterpumpandexhausterareengagedanddisengagedbyelectro-pneumac
solenoidvalves.Thesesolenoidsareoperatedbyelectrictoggleswitchesinthecab.Becauseeach
manufacturerwillhaveadierentcablayout,evenamongmodelsofthesamemanufacturer,our
descriponoftheirlocaonisgeneral.Inaddionthereisaswitchthatcontrolsthe“ON/OFF”
funconofthewaterheaterandcompartmentheater.
POWER DECK SYSTEMS ENGAGEMENT
Beforeengaginganyofthepowersystemsonthisvehicle,youmustrstdeterminethatthereisat
least120psiintheairbrakesystem.Checktheairpressuregaugesonthedashboardtoconrmthis.
ThePTOisactuatedbymeansofelectro-pneumacsolenoidvalves.WhileengagingPTOsystemsusing
theswitchesdescribedinthefollowingparagraphs,thevehicletransmissionmustbeputintoneutral
andtheparkingbrakesset.Forvehicleswithstandardtransmissions,theclutchmustbedepressedas
well.
Cauon! The transmission should never be operated in a gear range greater than indicated on
either the dashboard label or unit idencaon sheet.
Failure to heed this cauon may result in severe damage to the water pump or
exhauster.
Please consult with the factory if the vehicle gear range is not specied.

UNIT POWER
Theunitpowerswitchsuppliespowertoalltheotherswitchesandmountedequipment.When
turningunito,thisswitchmustbethelastoneturnedo.Pushuptoturnontheunitpower
switchandpushdowntoturnito.Aredlightglowsinsidetheswitchtoindicatethattheunit
powerison.Withoutturningthisswitchon,nothingwillfuncon.Theunitpowerswitchshould
beturnedowhentransporngtheunitunlessusingcoldweatherrecirculaon.
PTO
Inordertokeepthetruckstaonarywhileoperangthewaterpump,exhausterorboth,therear
axlemustbedisengaged.ThiscanbedonebymovingtheswitchmarkedPTOtothe“Up”or
“On”posion.ThiswillcausethePTOtointernallyshiposionsanddisengagethereardrive
trainofthevehicle.Thisalsoengagesthehydraulicpumpsforsystemoperaonsofallhydraulic
funcons(waterpump,boom,tailgate,andtuberack).
ENGAGING THE EXHAUSTER
Thesameprocedureusingtheswitchmarked(exhauster)willallowyoutoengagethevacuum
system.Bothpowersystemscanberunsimultaneouslyifdesired.Whentheprocedurefor
engagingthedesiredsystemsiscomplete,selectthegearrangereferredtoonthedashboard
label,ortheunitidencaonseconofthismanual.Releasetheclutch.
LOW WATER WARNING AND COLD WEATHER CONDITIONS
Thelowwatercontrolisthecenterswitchonthedashboard.Onunitsequippedwiththelow
waterwarningsystem,aredlightwillglowintheswitchintheeventthatthewaterlevelis
depletedtoapre-determinedlevel.Awhitelightremainsonduringnormaloperaons.Pushing
theswitchupturnsonthe“winter”lowwaterwarning.Pushingtheswitchdownturnsonthe
“summer”lowwaterwarning.Thelowwaterswitchislabeled“winter”and“summer”.During
coldweather,32oF(0oC)orbelowfreezing,thisswitchshouldbesettothe“winter”posion.
Thiswillcausethelowwaterwarninglighttoilluminatewithmorewaterleinthewatertank.
Thisallowsmorewatertoremaininthetanktohelppreventpossiblefreezing.Duringwarm
weather,theswitchcanbesettothe“summer”posion,thisallowsmorewatertodepletefrom
thetanksbeforethelowwaterwarninglightglows.
HYDRAULICS
ThemaintowerPTOincorporatestwoaddionaloutputsfortheinstallaonofthehydraulic
pumptosupplypowertoallhydraulicfunconsandthedrivesystemonthewaterpump.These
pumpsareclosecoupledtothePTO.ThesedrivesareautomacallyengagedwheneverthePTO
switchisacvatedinordertodisengagethemaindrivetothedierenalofthevehicle.When
thePTOswitchisposionedinthe“O”posionfordrivemode,thehydraulicpumpdrivesare
disengaged.

DASHBOARD and CONTROL PANEL CONTROLS
SeveralcontrolsaremountedintheChassisCabaswellasattheSideControlPanel.These
controlsallowtheoperatortoengageanddisengagethewaterpump,exhauster,hydraulicsystem,
andavacuumbreaker.Thewaterpump,exhauster,hydraulicsystem,andvacuumbreakerare
engagedanddisengagedbyElectro-Pneumac Solenoid Valves.Thesesolenoidsareoperatedby
electrictoggleswitches.Becauseeachmanufacturerwillhaveadierentcablayout,evenamong
modelsofthesamemanufacturer,locaonsofcontrols&switcheswillvaryfromunittounit.

SIDE OPERATOR’S STATION
Thereisanoperator’sstaonatthepassengersideoftheunittoallowtheoperatortocontrol
vaccuuming,pumping,andtankdumpingoperaons.Thecontrolpanelcontainsswitchesforfor
thevariousoperaonsandanemergencystopbuon(notshown).Theenginethrolecontrol
atthisstaonallowstheoperatortocontrolenginespeed,andthereforehydraulicpressure.
Operateengineat1500rpmduringtankdumpingandlockoperangfuncons.Plasclabelsat
eachswitchindicatethecorrectmanipulaonoftheswitchforthefunconitperforms.Consult
thelabelingtobesureyouareoperangthecontrolscorrectly.Ifthelabelsbecomeunreadable
orareinadvertentlyremoved,consulttheinformaonintheelectricalseconforswitch
operaon.

AIR PURGE PUMP PRIME
Air Purge Pump Prime “Valve #1”(seenextpage)isprovidedtoassistthepurgeofairtrapped
insidethesuconseconofthewaterpump.Thereshouldbesucientheadpressurefrom
thewaterinthewatertankstoexpellanyairtrappedonthesuconsideofthepump.CloseAir
Purge Pump Prime “Valve #1” (seenextpage)whenasolidwaterstreamrunsfromtheoverow
tube.
Air Purge Pump Prime “Valve #2” (seenextpage)isprovidedtoassistthepurgeofairtrapped
insidethedischargeseconofthewaterpump.Anytrappedairactsasaspringcushionforthe
compressedwaterandcausesthewaterto“bounceback”againstthecushionofair.Thiscan
causealoudknockingnoisefromthepumpareaandseverepulsangofthesewerhose.This
iscalled“cavitaon”.Iftheairisnotexpelled,severedamagecanoccurinthepump.Openthe
valvetoallowairtrappedinsidethepumptobeexpelled.Waterwillalsobeexpelledatthe
sameme.Runthepumpatanidlespeedforseveralminutesunlallairisexpelled,thenslowly
increasepumpspeed.Asthepumpdevelopsgreaterpressure,thewaterdischargedfromthe
valvewillbecomeveryintense.Whenitisclearthatallairhasbeenexpelled,closetheAir Purge
Pump Prime “Valve #2”(seenextpage)andincreasepumpspeed.Theknockingsoundshould
disappear,andthepulsangofthehosewillbeverymild.Thisisnormalforatriplexwaterpump.
Atthispointitissafetooperatethejeng,hydroorhandgunoperaon.Thisprocedureis

pumpsomehow,oroneormorevalvespringshavebroken.Ifyouexperiencerepeatedcavitaon,
eventhoughthepumphasnotbeenrunoutofwater,youshouldrequestaninspeconofthe
watersystemtodeterminethecause.
COLD WEATHER BLOWOUT
The Schrader Air Valve(seenextpage)locatedonthetopofthewaterpump,isusedtopurgethe
pumpandwaterpipingofanytrappedwaterandreturnittothewatersuconline.By
connecngthepurgecoiledhoseassembly(notshown)totheForced Air Disconnet (seenext
page),andtheSchrader Air Valve,airisthenintroducedatthevalveandwaterisblownback
tothewatertank.TheBlowout Valve(seenextpage)mustbeopenpriortoapplyingairtothe
Schrader Air Valve.

1. Turnon Unit Power Switch andRecirculaon Switch inthecab.
2. Unitcannowbedriven.Asunitmoves,thewaterpumpwillcirculatewaterthroughoutthe
systemandbacktothetank.
Cauon! The pump systems should never be operated in a gear range greater than indicated
on the dashboard and truck labeling. Failure to heed this cauon may result in
severe damage to the water pump or exhauster. Please consult with the factory if
the vehicle gear range is not specied.
Suggeson: Alwayscarrythehandgunandnozzlesintheheatedcabofthetruckwhennotin
usetopreventfreezing.
Note: Allunitssuppliedwithcoldweatherrecirculaonareequippedwithtwolowwaterwarning
sensorscontrolledbythe“Winter/Summer”Switchinthecab.Incoldweathertheswitch
shouldbeinthe“Winter”posion.Thisallowsmorewatertoremaininthetankto
accommodaterecirculaon.Duringwarmerweather,theswitchshouldbeinthe“Summer”
posion,providingmorewaterforhydroexcavaonoperaons.
