Safety Information
The HomePlug 8500W is an electrical device and operates using mains power. For
reasons of your own personal safety, handle it with the same care and attention
given to all electrical equipment!
For reasons of safety, read the following regulations and instructions and observe the
information contained:
1. Unplug the HomePlug 8500W from the power supply before cleaning it. Never
use liquid cleaning agents or aerosol cleaners. Only use a slightly moist cloth.
2. Do not use the HomePlug 8500W near water.
3. Do not position the HomePlug 8500W beside or above a heating radiator or
another source of water. Never use the device as a built−in installation except
where sufficient ventilation is ensured.
4. Do not expose the HomePlug either to extreme temperatures or humid
conditions and protect it from direct sunlight and dusty conditions.
5. Only connect the HomePlug 8500W to mains power outlets whose properties
comply to those stipulated on the corresponding product labels. If there is any
cause for doubt, consult your dealer or local power company.
6. The HomePlug 8500W may only be connected to a fused power outlet. Ensure
that the fuses and circuit breakers of all the lines conducting electricity are
designed for 100 − 240 V (according to the respective national power supply
grid).
7. Connect the HomePlug 8500W power adapter to a 100 − 240 V power socket.
Do not use an extension cord.
8. Never attempt to modify the HomePlug 8500W or complete any repair work on it
yourself since opening and removing the covers exposes you to the risks of an
electric shock and also annuls any rights to claims under the terms of guarantee.
All repair and service work must be performed by qualified service personnel.
9. Unplug the HomePlug 8500W from the power outlet and contact an authorised
service centre if one of the following occurs:
SIf liquid is spilled into the device.
SIf the device comes into contact with water.
SIf the device does not operate normally although the instructions in the
operating manual have been followed.
SIf the device shows a distinct deterioration in performance.

Intended Use
The HomePlug 8500W Wireless Adapter, subsequently referred to as
HomePlug 8500W, is designed for transmitting data within a power network. Any
other use is considered unintended use. Unauthorised modifications or
reconstruction not described in this manual are not permitted.
Information on Disposal
The implementation of European law in national laws and directives obliges you to
dispose of consumable goods appropriately. This serves to protect both persons and
the environment.
The adjacent symbol indicates that electrical and electronic apparatus
as well as batteries no longer required must be disposed of separate
from domestic waste.
Old or unwanted devices must be disposed of at collection points
provided by public waste authorities.
Batteries and power packs must be disposed of at shops which sell
batteries or collection points which provide the corresponding
containers.
Packaging materials must be disposed of according to local
regulations.

Introduction
The HomePlug 8500W uses the power cables already provided inside buildings to
transmit signals to provide a reliable network of computers and network equipment.
Its maximum transmission rate of 85 Mbps means that the HomePlug 8500W can
cope with sophisticated applications such as internet telephony, high resolution video
applications and internet access, reliably and simultaneously.
The technology implemented by the HomePlug modulates the computer data so that
it is possible to transfer it from point−to−point via the power lines. Using this
technology, two computers have a virtual network connection without the units
actually being physically connected to each other.
The HomePlug 8500W uses No New Wires®communication in in each room, via
each power line, using a transmission rate of up to 85 Mbps. It has 4 indicator lamps
(LEDs) and a network (Ethernet) port. The LEDs serve to indicate the connection
status and to signal problems concerning system malfunction. The Ethernet port is
used to connect the HomePlug 8500W to the network. The HomePlug 8500W is
equipped with a standard plug and, thus, is suitable for any 100 − 240 V power
socket.
Networking computers has the following advantages:
1. Shared access to centrally stored data.
2. Shared access to all the printers in the network.
3. Shared use of an internet connection.
4. Multi−user games over the network.

Installation and Connection
System Requirements
The HomePlug 8500W can be used with all operating systems which support TCP/IP.
Drivers are not required for the HomePlug 8500W. However, the configuration
software supplied can only be implemented on Windows operating systems.
The configuration software includes easily understood, step−by−step instructions on
modifying the wireless network name (default: yournetworkname) and selecting an
encryption (default: None).
Starting the Setup Utility
NOTE: Only possible with Windows operating systems.
Installation
1. Connect the HomePlug 8500W to the computer or relevant network device using
the network cable.
2. Plug the HomePlug in the power socket.
3. Start the setup utility (configuration software). The Resource CD is provided with
an auto run feature. If this does not work, start the Setup.exe program provided
on the CD by double−clicking on it.

4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
NOTE: Use of the setup utility is optional. We recommend following it step−by−step,
however.

Connection and Control Lamps
The HomePlug 8500W is equipped with four control lamps and an Ethernet network
connection port.

over cable as well as looped−through cable.

Important Information
Network Capacity
The maximum number of HomePlug 8500W adapters which can be installed in a
single−family house is, theoretically, 253. In practice, however, no more than 10
HomePlugs should transmit data simultaneously.
Network Security
Normally, an electricity meter forms a physical barrier, i.e. only devices connected to
a particular electric meter can be part of a network and benefit from the phase
coupling. However, we recommend setting up a secure, private network by assigning
a new network name. It is configured with the setup utility on the Resource CD. The
HomePlugs use a 56 bit DES encryption (Data Encryption Standard).
NOTE: The HomePlugs operate with each other with overlapping phases. If
problems arise, call an electrician to install a so called phase coupler.
NOTE: In order to use devices from other manufacturers together with the
HomePlugs, set the same network names and password for all the devices.
Use the setup utility in this case. If necessary, refer to the operating manual
provided with the device.
Correct Use of Passwords
You can improve your security substantially by following some important rules
regarding the use of passwords:
SKeep your passwords as confidential as possible.
SNever write passwords down or store them in notebooks, wallets or in text files
on computers.
SDo not pass on your password unnecessarily.
SSelect a random password. Use strings of letters and numbers. Passwords from
words used in common language are not secure.
SPasswords should be changed as often as possible. This requires a little effort
but increases security considerably. The password should be changed even if
only there is only the slightest suspicion of a leak.

Connecting Wireless Devices
Wireless devices can be connected using the HomePlug 8500W.
Proceed as follows to do this.
1. Switch on the device to which the connection should be made.
2. Open the software used to display wireless connections.
3. Select the connection detected and register your device on the HomePlug
8500W using the current network name (default: yournetworkname) and
encryption (default: None).

Web User Interface
Regardless of the operating system implemented, you can use a browsers to access
the Web User Interface (graphical user interface) in order to adjust settings on the
devices. Enter the IP address of the HomePlug (default: 192.168.1.254) in your
browser.
NOTE: If you have connected the HomePlug 8500W directly to a router with
activated DHCP server, use the IP address allocated by the router to access
the graphical user interface.
You are requested to, enter the administrator password (default: admin).
When the input is completed successfully, the following window appears.

You are now able to complete complex adjustments to the HomePlug 8500W
settings. The CD supplied contains an English PDF file in which all the menu items
are explained in detail. Only experienced users should use this method of
configuration.

This function enables you to modify the IP address of the HomePlug or to select the
Request IP Address from DHCP Server option.

It is possible to search the network for HomePlug devices. After conclusion, a
network name can be assigned to the devices found.

All the alterations of the respective wireless network settings are performed here.
Wireless Settings always offers basic settings, such as Channel ID, ESSID (network
name), Data Rate. Encryption settings can be altered in the Security menu.
