CFCDisposal
Your old refiigerator may have a cooling system
that used CFCs (chlorofluorocm't_ms). CFCs are
believed to harm stratospheric ozone.
If you are throwing away your old refiigeramr, make
sure the CFC refrigerant is removed for proper
disposal by a qualified servicer. If you inmnfionally
release dais CFC refrigerant you can be sut_ject m
fines and imprisonment under provisions of
environmental legislation.
USEOFEXTENSIONCORDS
Because of potential safety hazards under certain conditions, we strongly recommend
against the use of an extension cord.

The power cord of lhis appliance is equipped with
a 3-prong (gn'ounding) plug which maws wilh a
standard _prong (grounding) wall outlet to
minimize the possibility of electric shock hazard
from this appliance.
Have the wall outlet and circuit checked by a
qualified elecuician to make sure the outlet is
properly grounded,
If Ihe outlet is a standard 2-prong outlet, it is your
personal responsibilily and obligation to have it
replaced with a properly grounded _prong wall
outlet.
The refiigeralor should always be plugged into its
own individual electrical outlet which has a voltage
rating that matches the rating plate.
This provides the best performance and also

Initially, set the fresh food control at5 and the freezer control at5 and
allow 12hours for the temperature to stabilize.
Several adjustments may be required. Adjust the controls one increment
at a time, and allow 12hours after each adjustment for the refrigerator
to reach the temperature you have set.
Setting the freezer control to Ostops cooling in both the fresh food
and freezer compartments but does not shut off electrical power to
the refrigerator.
Control settings will vary based onpersonal preferences, usage, and
operating conditions and may require more than one adjustment.

Water Filter Cartridge
The water flter carlridge is located in the
back upper right comer of tlae refiigerator
compartment.
When to Replace the Filter
The filter cartridge should be replaced
every sixmonthsor earlier if the flow of
water to the water dispenser or icemaker
decreases.
Installing the Filter Cartridge

Place the top of the cartridge up tOthe left. DOnotpull down on the
insidethecartridgeholderand cartridge. A small amount of water may
slowly turn it to the right, drip down.

Fill the replacement cartridge with
water from the tap to allow for better
flow from the dispenser immediately
after installation,

You must use Ilae filmr bypass plug
when a replacement filler carlridge is not
available. The dispenser and tfe icemaker

slightly and pulling past stop location. If the door prevents you fl'om taking out the drawel_, the refligerator will need to

cases, when you roll 1he refiigerator out,
you will need Io move the refrigerator to
the left as you roll it out.

A newly-installed refrigerator may take 12-24 hours to begin making ice.
Automatic Icemaker (on some models)

per cycle-approximately 100-130 cubes
in a 24-hour period, depending on fi'eezer
compartment temperature, room
temperature, number of door openings
and other ttse conditions.

Ice Storage Drawer

Set the icemaker power switch m tlae OFF
position. Pull 1he drawer suaight out and
then lift past the stop position.
Toreplace:
When replacing tlae dtawer, make sure m
push it filanly inlo place. If it does not go all
11aeway-back, remove it and rotate 11aedrive
mechanism 1/4 mru. Then push the
drawer back again.
Important FactsAbout YourDispenser
/})_Do not add ice fi'om trays or bags to
11aeslorage bin. It may not crush or
dispen_ well.
/_)_Avoid overfilling glass wida ice and u_
of narrow glasses. Backed-up ice can jam
the chute or cau_ the door in Ihe chute
to freeze shut. If ice is blocking Ilaechute,
poke it through with a wooden spoon.
/_;_l_verages and foods should not be
quick-chilled in the ice storage bin.
Cans, L_)ttles or food packages in the
storage bin may cau_ the icemaker
or auger to jam.
_ Some crushed ice may-be dispen_d even
though you selected CUBEDICE.This
happens occasionally when a few cubes
have been left in tlae crusher.
_ After crushed ice is dispensed, some
water may- drip from the chute.
_ Sometimes a small mound of snow wilt
form on the door in the ice chute. This
condition is normal and usually occm_
when you have dispensed crushed ice
repeatedly. The snow will eventually
evaporate.

Cleaning the Outside
The dispenser drip area, (on some models)
beneath the gdlle, should he wilx'd dly. Water
left in this area may- leave deposits. Remove
the deposits by adding undiluted vinegar to
the well. Soak until the deposits disappear
or become loose enough to iinse away-.
Thedispensercradle(on some models).
Ik'fore cleaning, open the freezer door part
way to prevent dispensing of ice or water
when cleaning. Clean with walTn water and
baking soda solution--about a tablespoon
(15 mt) of baking soda to a quarl (1 liter)
ofwamr. Rin_ thoroughly and wipe thT
Thedoorhandlesandtrim.Clean with a
cloth dampened with soapy water. DIT
with a soft cloth.
Keep theoutsideclean.Wipe with a clean
cloth lightly dampened will, kilchen
appliance wax or mild liquid dish delergent.
DIT and polish will, a clean, soft cloth.
Donot wipetherefrigeratorwith a soileddish
cloth or wet towel Thesemayleavea residue
thatcanerodethepaint. Donotusescouring
pads,powderedcleaners,bleachor cleaners
contaMngbleachbecausetheseproductscan
scratchandweakenthepaint finish.
Cleaning the Inside
Tohelp prevent odors, leave an open box of
baking soda in the fresh food and freezer
compartments.
Unplugtherefrigeratorbeforecleaning.If this
is not practical, wring excess moisture out
of Slxmge or cloth when cleaning around
switches, lights or controls.
Use warm waler and baking soda solution--
at×)ut a tablespoon (15 ml) of baking soda
to a quart (l liter) of water. This tn)th cleans
and neuwalizes odors. Rinse and wipe dry.
After deaning the door gaskets, apply a thin
layer of pe_oleumjetly to the door gaskets at
the hinge side. This helps keep the gaskets
from sticking and bending out of shape.
Drainopeningin freezercompartment.During
yearly cleaning, remove Ln)tmm freezer
basket and flush a solution of baking soda--
1 teaspoon (5 ml) and 2cups (500 mt) of
hot (not boiling) water--through the drain
line with the help of a meat basler. This will
help eliminate odor and reduce the
likelihood of a clogged dFain line. If drain
becomes clogged, use a meat baster and
baking soda solution I()force the clog
through the drain line.

Condenser

Preparing for Vacation
For long vacations or absences, remove
food and unplug the refiigerafor. Move

1_'ave the doors open.
Set the icemaker power switch m the OFF
position and shut off the wamr supply to
the refrigerator.
If the mmperamre can drop below freezing,
have a qualified servicer drain the wamr
supply- sysmm (on some models) to prevent
_rious property damage due fo flooding,
Preparing to Move
Secure all loose ilems such as grille,
shelves and dlawers by roping them
securely in place to prevent damage,
Besuretherefrigeretorstaysinan upright
positionduringmoving.

Unplug the refiigeramr.
Remove the shetfiust below light
shield. (The shelf will be easier to
remove ifit is emptied filet,)
Lift up on the light shield to remove,
After replacing with an appliance
bulb of 1he same or lower wattage,
reinstall the shield by hanging it
from the three tabs.
Reinstall the shetf and plug the
refi'igerator back in.
Dispenser (onsomemodels)
Unplug the refiigeramr.
The bulb is located on 1he dispen_r
under Ilaeconu'ol panel. Remove
the light bulb by mining it
counterclockwise.
Replace the bulb wilh a bulb of the
same size and wattage.
Plug the refrigerator back in.

WATER SUPPLY TO THE ICEMAKER
(on some models)
If the refrigerator has an icemaker, it will have to be
connected to a cold water line. AGE waw.r supply kit
(containing tubing, shutoffvalve, fittings and
instructions) is available at extra cost from your dealer
or from Parts and Accessories, 800-626-2002.
REFRIGERATOR LOCATION
• Do not install the refi'igerator where the temperature
will go below 60°F (16°C) because it will not run of(en
enough to maintain proper temperalures.
• Install it on a floor s(rong enough to support it fully
loaded.
CLEARANCES
Allow the following clearances for ease of installation,
proper air circulation and plumbing and elecuical
connections.
• Sides 1/8" (4 mm)
• Top 1" (25 mm)
• Back 1" (25 mm)
Adoor cleaFance of 3/4" (19 mm) is needed for a 90 °
door opening which provides better access to the food
s(orage area.
ROLLERS
The rollers have 3purposes:
O Rollei_ adjust so the door clo_s easily when opened
at×)ut halfway.
Rollers adjust so the refiigerator is fin'nly positioned
on the floor and does not wobble.
Rotlei_ allow you to move the refrigerator away-fl'om
the wall for cleaning.
To adjust the rollers, remove the b_e g_Jlleby pulling it
out at the t×)ttom.
Turn the roller acljusfing scl*_.wsdockwise to raise the
refrigerator, cotmterdockwise to lower it. Use an
adjustable wrench (3/8" hex head t×)lt) or pliers.
To replace base _e, line up the clips on back of gaille
between the bar and the bottom of the cabinet. Pttsh
forwm'd until gIJlle snaps into place.

DOOR ALIGNMENT
After leveling, make sure that doors are even at the top,
To make the doors even, adjust the refrigerator door,
Using a 5/16" socket wrench, turn the door adjusting
screw to the right to raise the door, to the lefl to lower
it, (A nylon plug, embedded in the threads of the pin,
prevents the pin from turning unless a wrench is used,)
After one or two turns of the wrench, ()pen and close
the refrigerator door and check the alignment at the
top of the doors.

INSTALLING THE WATER LINE (ON SOME MODELS)
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
When connecting a GE Reverse Osmosis Water System to
your refrigerator, the only approved installation is with a
GE RVKIT,
If the water supply to the refrigerator isfrom a Reverse
Osmosis Water Filfration System AND the refrigerator also
has a water filter, use the refi_igerator's filter bypass plug,
Using the refiigerator's water filtration cm'tridge in
conjunction with the RO fiher can result in hollow ice
cubes and slower water Ilow from the water dispenser.
This water line installation is not warranted by the
refrigerator or icemaker manufacturer, Follow these
instructions carefully to minimize the risk of expensive
water damage,
Water hammer (water banging in the pipes) in house
plumbing can cause damage to refrigerator parts and
lead to water leakage or flooding Call a qualified
plumber to correct water hammer before installing
the water supply line to the refrigerator.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN (CONT.)
To prevent burns and product damage, do not hook
up the water line to the hot water line.
If you use your refrigerator before connecting the
water line, make sure the icemaker power switch is
in the OFF position.
Do not install the icemaker robing in areas where
temperatures fall below freezing,
When using any electrical device (such as a power drill)
during installation, be sure the device is insulated or
wired in a manner to prevent the hazard of electric
shock.
All installations must be in accordance with local
plumbing code requirements.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
To determine how much tubing you need:
Measure the distance from the water valve on lhe back
of the refi'igeralor to the water supply- pipe. Then add
8feet (244 cm). Be sure there is sufficient extra tubing
[about 8 feet (244 cm) coiled inlo 3 turns of about
10 inches (25 cm) diameter] It allow the refi'igerator
to move out from the wall after installation.
•AGE water supply kit (containing tubing, shul{}ff
valve and fittings listed below) is available at extra cost
from your dealer or from Parts and Accessories,
800-626-2002.
•A cold water supply. The water pressure must be
between 20 and 120 p.s.i. (1,4-8.1 bin') on models

WHAT YOU WILL NEED (CONT.)
•Copper tubing or plastic tubing from a GE water
supply kit, 1/4" outer diameter to connect the
refi'igerator to the water supply-. Be sure both ends
of the tubing are cut square.
Do not use plastic tubing or plastic fittings, unless
they are part ofa GE water supply- kit, because the
water supply line is under pressure at all times.
Certain types of plastic tubing may- become brittle
with age and crack, resulting in water leakage.
• Two 1/4" outer diameter compression nuts and
2ferrules (sleeves)--to connect the tubing to the
shutoff valve and the refrigerator water valve.
• If your existing water line has a flared fitting at the
end, you will need an adapter (available at plumbing
supply slores) to connect the water line It the
refrigerator OR you can cut off the flared fitting
with a tube cutter and then use a compression fitting.
• Shutoff valve I{)connect It the cold water line.
The shutoffvalve should have a water inlet with a
minimum inside diameter of 5/32" at the point of
connection to the COLD WATER LINE. Saddle-type
shul{}ffvalves are included in many water supply kiLs.
Before purchasing, make sure a saddle-type valve
complies with your local plumbing codes.

Install the shutolf vatve on the nearest fi'equently used
drinking water line,
[] SHUT OFF THE MAIN WATER
SUPPLY
Turn on the nearest faucet long enough to clear the
line of water.
[] CHOOSE THE VALVE LOCATION
Choose a location for the valve 1hat is easily
accessible. It is best to connect into 1he side of a
vertical water pipe. When it is necessal T to connect
into a horizontal water pipe, make dae connection
to dae mp or side, rather daan at the bottom,
to avoid drawing off any sediment from the
water pipe.
[] DRILL THE HOLE FOR THE VALVE
Drill a 1/4" hole in the water pipe, using a sharp bit.
Remove any brats resulting fi'om drilling the hole in
the pipe.
[] FASTEN THE SHUTOFF VALVE
lCasten the shutoffvatve to the cold water pipe with
the pipe clamp.

Tighten the clamp screws until the sealing washer
begins to swell.
NOTE: Do not overtighten or you may crush the

Route the tubing between the cold water line and
the refrigerator.
Route the tubing through a hole drilled in the wall
or floor (behind the refrigerator or adjacent base
cabinet) as close to the wall as possible.
NOTE: Be sure there is sufficient exlra tubing
[about 8 feet (244 cm) coiled into 3 turus of about
10" (25 cm) diameter] m allow dae refrigerator to
move out fi'om the wall after installation.

Turn the main water supply on and flush out the
tubing until the water is clear.
Shut the water offat the water valve after about
one quart (1 liter) of water has been flushed
through the tubing.
[] CONNECT THE TUBING TO THE
REFRIGERATOR
NOTES:
•Before making the connection to the refrigerator,
be sure the refrigerator power cord is not plugged
into the wall outlet.
•If your refrigerator does not have a water fitter.
we recommend installing a water fiher if your
water supply has sand or particles that could clog
dae screen of the refrigerator's waler valve. Install
it in the water line near the refrigerator.
[] CONNECT THE TUBING TO THE
REFRIGERATOR (CONT.)
Remove the access cover.

Remove the plastic flexible cap fi'om the water valve
(refi'igerator connection).
Place the compression nut and ferrule (sleeve)
onto the end of the tubing as shown.
Insert the end of the tubing into the water valve
connection ;usfar as possible. While holding the
tubing, tighten the fitting.
Fasten the tubing into the clamp provided to hold
it in a vertical position. You may need to pIT open
the clamp.

SHUTOFF VALVE
Tighten any connections that leak.
[] PLUG IN THE REFRIGERATOR
Arrange the coil of tubing so that it does not vibrate
against the back of the refrigeralor or against the
wall. Push the refrigerator back to the wall.
START THE ICEMAKER (ON SOME
MODELS)
Set the icemaker power switch to the ON position.
The icemaker will not begin to operale until it
reaches its operating temperature of 15°F
(-9°C) or below. It will then begin operation
automatically if the icemaker power switch is in
the ON position.
NOTE: In lower water pressure conditions, the
waler valve may turn on up to 3 times to deliver
enough water to the icemaker.

can damage the icemaker. To prevent this, set the power switch to the 0F/:
position. This will stop flae buzzing.
