INTRODUCTION
CDRW 8x4x32 is a new generation Half Height 5.25" Built-in CD-
Recor able/ReWritable rive with the popular (Enhance ) IDE
interface.
The rive is in fact a multi-function evice, since it can be use as:
• fast CD-ROM rea er (max 32x)
• 8x spee CD-Recor er, e.g. to recor your own
CD-ROM's or Au io-CD's
• 4x spee CD-ReWritable evice to use as your
personal storage me ium, by using Incremental
Packet Writing
The CDRW 8x4x32 is the i eal tool for publishing large amounts of
ata in compact form on CD. The Incremental Packet Writing
function will make this rive attractive to the general esktop PC-
user for personal ata storage.
CD-Recor able iscs can be recor e at 8x spee , an in all
stan ar formats, e.g. CD-Au io, CD-ROM (XA), CD-i an Vi eo-
CD among others.
Since these iscs are recor e in accor ance with the Orange Book
(part II) specification, these iscs can be playe back on all
compatible CD-players.
CD-ReWritable is a feature which allows re-use of previously
written iscs by rewriting portions or the complete isc in
accor ance with the Orange Book (partIII) specification. These
iscs can be recor e at qua ruple spee in all stan ar formats.

Unpacking
If the CDRW 8x4x32 package shows evi ence of rough han ling or
amage an the rive oes not function properly on initial startup:
return the rive an amage package to your supplier an request
a replacement.
Lift out the CDRW 8x4x32 an remove the packing pieces.
Check that the package contains following items :
• User manual
• Mounting screws
An IDE flatcable an /or au io cable coul be part of this package
epen ing on the commerical package. It can also be obtaine
from your local supplier.

Precautions
This CD-Recor able/Rewritable rive, like all electronic
equipment, is static sensitive.
• Please take the proper precautions when han ling the rive,
for example by touching the PC - chassis before touching the
rive.
• Avoi touching the IDE connector pins as well as the au io-
connector pins an the jumper pins.
• Keep the rive in its con uctive wrapping until you are rea y
to install the rive in your computer.
Safety Precautions
• Europe: This rive shall be installe only with an EN60950
(IEC950) approve Power supply.
• USA/Cana a: This rive is for use only with IBM compatible
UL liste Personal Computers or Macintosh UL
liste workstations weighing less than 18 kg.

Installing the rive
11Turn off your computer, monitor an other peripherals.
To isconnect your configuration completely from the mains,
the mains plug has to be isconnecte .
OPEN THE COVER FLAP OF THIS BOOKLET FOR
LOCATING THE DRIVE-CONNECTORS AND THEIR ORIENTATION.

of computer), locate a free 5.25" bay an follow the instructions,
as provi e with your computer systems, for installing the rive.
When you are planning to use 8 cm iscs your rive shoul be
mounte horizontaly or you shoul use an a apter
(for information contact your local supplier).

55Locate the free en of the IDE ata cable an threa it
out through the open rive bay. Do the same with the
power cable an the (optional) au io cable ( igital or
analogue). Your system will either be equippe with an analogue
or igital soun car connector. Use the appropriate connector on
the rive recognisable with the amount of pins.

back of the CDRW 8x4x32. Make sure you
correctly align pin 1 of the cable to pin 1 of
the connectors.

77Insert the CDRW 8x4x32 into the rive bay. Using all the
screws inclu e in the bag to secure the CDRW 8x4x32
into the bay.
88Replace the cover. Connect the mains plug
of your configuration. When you have
successfully installe the rive an establishe all connections, it
is now time to switch on the PC. You are rea y to install the
software.

SUMMARY OF CONTROLS AND CONNECTIONS

1. HEADPHONE PLUG
Connect your hea phone to listen to au io or music iscs (or
tracks).
2. HEADPHONE VOLUME CONTROL
Turn the wheel to the right to increase the au io volume of
your hea phone.
3. WRITE INDICATOR
Lights “orange” when writing of a isc occurs.
Flashes “orange” uring write emulation.
4. DISC TRAY
5. DISC IN/ACTIVE/ERROR in icator ( ual color LED)
Lights “green” when a isc is present. Flashes “green”
asymmetrically when ata is being rea from isc or written to
the isc. Flashes “green” symmetrically when starting up a isc.
Lights “re ” upon error (e.g. after faile selftest).
6. OPEN/CLOSE BUTTON
Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to open the isc loa ing tray.
To close the isc loa ing tray, gently push the front of the
tray or press the Open/Close button.Using the open/close
button to close the tray will calibrate the movement of the
tray in case this evitates from the original setting ue to for
instance eaging
7. EMERGENCY EJECT
In case you are not able to power up your PC, an want to take
the isc out of the rive, push with a ro (paperclip) of about
5 cm through the hole in the front to isengage the gears
insi e. Then pull the tray out. After taking the isc, gently push
it back to its original position
This is only in case of emergency, not meant for normal
operations.

11To open the tray: Press the Open/Close button.

accommo ates iscs with 8 cm iameter (CD-Single) or the more
usual 12 cm iscs (the 8 cm isc can only be use in rives
mounte horizontaly).

press the Open/Close button.

DURING THE RECORDING PROCESS, SINCE THIS MIGHT RESULT IN
AN UNREADABLE DISC. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THE COMPUTER

Operating the CD-Recor able/Rewritable on the
computer
Specific Application Software running on the computer platform in
use, esigne to work with the CDRW 8x4x32, must
be use in or er to be able to operate the CDRW 8x4x32 correctly.
Software installation
The installation an operation of the necessary software is epen ent
of the computer configuration in which the CDRW 8x4x32 is to be
use , e.g. PC’s, Win ows 95/98/2000, Win ows NT, UNIX or other
Operating Systems. Contact your supplier for the full list of

Care of iscs
• When loa ing a isc, allow time for the oor to open an then
gently insert the isc.
• Han le iscs only by the outer an inner e ges.
•Never write with a ballpoint on the
surface of the isc.
•Do not store a isc in places with high
temperature an humi ity. Do not place
the isc un er irect sunlight.
• Store iscs in their cases to prevent ust contamination,
scratches, ben ing an other amages.
• When a isc becomes irty, clean it with a cleaning cloth. Wipe
the isc from the centre out. Do not use solvents such as
benzine, thinner, commercially available cleaners, or anti-static
flui s. Using flui s of these types may amage the isc.
• Empty iscs are separately available through your ealer.
• To get an optimal temperature controle, you shoul close your PC
after installing the rive in this way the central fan will help cooling
your rive an keep performance accor ing specification.
• Unloa ing a isc after recor ing might take some time, because
the rive has to up ate the TOC before the isc can be
ejecte .
