Overview
This Administration Guide covers e-DiagTools versions 3.0 and 3.01. It is targeted
at IT/MIS personnel having responsibility for system administration and end-user
support.
The Guide explains how to configure the HP e-DiagTools diagnostics solution in
order to obtain optimal e-support capabilities.
It describes the software tools associated with e-DiagTools. These provide a
structure for control and use of the e-DiagTools core tests on remote PCs.
The Guide describes the remote capabilities of e-DiagTools, with details on how to
execute e-DiagTools on managed PC’s from TopTools Device Manager. It shows
how to configure your remote PCs to produce a Support Ticket and send it via
SMTP-based e-mail to your own help-desk or your Authorized Support Provider.
The remote configuration of e-DiagTools Start-up and Internet options from
TopTools Device Manager requires Device Manager 5.0 or higher on the TopTools
server. In addition it requires TopTools Agent 5.0 or higher on the client PC.

Partition is separate from your standard hard disk partition.
The HP Utility Partition takes up little space (approx. 15 megabytes, a
negligible amount on current multi-gigabyte hard disks) and is transparent
to the user. Therefore it does not hinder or confuse the user during the
normal operation of the PC.

accessible hardware diagnostics solution with remote capabilities. HP aims
to bring future enhancements to the Utility Partition by including further HP
diagnostics and utility software.
Carrying out diagnostic actions from the Utility Partition avoids the need to
locate a CD-ROM or floppy disks, or search the Internet, as the required files
are all there on the Utility Partition ready to use. In less than five minutes, e-
DiagTools will thoroughly test your PC hardware (hard disk, motherboard,
video, sound, optical drive, etc.) to help you determine if a problem is
hardware related and to localize it. Finally, e-DiagTools can communicate
the results directly to your help desk or support provider.

Software Components in the e-DiagTools Solution
This is a list of the software components which together comprise the e-DiagTools solution
for remote BIOS updates and remote troubleshooting and diagnosis of your managed PCs
The e-DiagTools functions may be accessed locally on the individual machine.
The TopTools Device Manager PC is used to interface with e-DiagTools on your
managed PCs using TopTools Agent installed on each remote machine. The
TopTools Device Manager can configure e-DiagTools parameters and run e-
DiagTools diagnostics remotely. A Support Ticket containing the diagnostics results
may be sent by e-mail to the Authorized Support Providers, or by LAN to the
TopTools Server.
Software Component Description/Location
e-DiagTools
e-DiagTools, the Diagnosis and Troubleshooting software solution, is pre-loaded on the PC (on the
HP Utility Partition) or can be downloaded from the HP web site:

e-DiagTools
for Windows
The Windows version of e-DiagTools is available for the HP Omnibook. It provides a Graphic User
Interface, enables local BIOS updates, and carries out local diagnosis and troubleshooting,
including the creation of your PC Support Ticket and its transmission to the Service Provider or
HelpDesk and/or storage to hard disk.
See Chapter 5.
LAN Configuration
Agent
The LAN Configuration Agent searches the network to find the network settings needed for
operation of TopTools and to create the Support Ticket.
See Chapter 3.
The LAN Configuration Agent is available from HP’s product support web site.
Virtual Call
Assistant
The Virtual Call Assistant (VCA) is a resident software program to automatically detect and
decode audio warning signals emitted by the e-DiagTools Pre-Boot Diagnostics Capability. The
encoded signals from the remote PC indicate the nature of a failure state.
See Chapter 8.

Utility Partition
Manager
The Utility Partition Manager is a software utility for setting parameters for the HP Utility
Partition startup options.
See Chapter 7.
TopTools
Device Manager
The Top Tools Device Manager for the remote operation of single or multiple managed PCs.
See Chapter 6, page 25.
The TopTools Device Manager is available from the HP TopTools web site.
TopTools Agent
(TopTools for PCs)
The TopTools Agent is installed on each of the managed PCs. It must be present for you to use
TopTools Device Manager remotely to control the PC.
See Chapter 6,"TopTools Agent & e-DiagTools" on page 33.

Parameters and Settings
This section introduces the parameters you are most likely to use when working with
the e-DiagTools solution on Managed PCs either locally or via the TopTools Device
Manager. These parameters and settings control the behavior and the on-screen
attributes of the different software tools which comprise the e-DiagTools solution and
TopTools utilities.
A short description is given for each topic. Where necessary, there is also a page
reference to a more detailed explanation in this Guide.

e-DiagTools Configuration
A number of parameters are configurable within e-DiagTools. The parameters
listed here may be configured locally, or may be configured remotely using the
TopTools Device Manager:
•The Utility Partition ‘Welcome’ message
(“Press F10 to enter the HP Utility Partition, or any other key to proceed”)
•Boot Menu options
•The Client Internet Protocol (IP) configuration
•Customer and Support Provider e-mail addresses
•Master Catalogue URLs.
The use of each of these parameters is described below.
For the remote configuration of e-DiagTools parameters
on a managed PC using
TopTools, both e-DiagTools
and Top Tools Agent must be installed on each PC, and
Top Tools Device Manager on the TopTools server.
Utility Partition INI Files
All e-DiagTools configuration data is stored in two files. These are named
HiPaConf.INI and Network.INI. These two files are located at the root of the
Utility Partition.
For the .INI file default values, see the heading “Default Settings, INI files” on
page 7.
The Utility Partition ‘Welcome’ message
The Utility Partition ‘Welcome’ message (the activation prompt) is shown just after
the BIOS has completed its power-on self-tests.
You can configure:
•Use of a ‘Welcome’ message (Yes/No option): If set to ‘No’, marching dots (one
per second) are shown instead of the message
•The message delay: A delay of three to ten seconds can be set.
These parameters are set from within TopTools Device Manager. You can also use a
stand-alone tool, the e-DiagTools Utility Partition Manager to alter the Utility
Partition ‘Welcome’ message and the delay value.

e-DiagTools Startup
e-DiagTools can be started remotely from TopTools Device Manager. See TopTools
Device Manager, “Remote Execution of e-DiagTools” on page 23.
To open e-DiagTools for local use, restart the PC and press the F10 function key
when prompted. If the Utility Partition is present and e-DiagTools installed on it,
then
F10 will enter the Utility Partition and e-DiagTools starts automatically.
If e-DiagTools is present on a system without the Utility Partition, restart the PC
and press the F10 function key to open a boot menu with these options:
•Help
•Update BIOS
•Update BIOS, clear settings
•Run e-DiagTools
•Send Support Ticket to support provider
•Exit
TopTools Device Manager has an option to show either a Full or a Simplified boot
menu. The Full boot menu presents all the options shown above. The simplified
menu omits the two BIOS related options “Update BIOS” and “Update BIOS, clear
settings”.
The “Help”option provides a concise explanation of each of the menu options.
These menu choices are also explained in the following sections of this Guide.
Client IP Configuration
Three methods are available for setting the client PC IP configuration parameters.
These are described in the Section “Client IP Configuration” on page 14.
E-mail Addresses of Customer and Support Provider
Before sending the Support Ticket by e-mail the you can set two e-mail addresses:
•Your own (end-user’s) e-mail address
•The Support Provider’s e-mail address, to which the Support Ticket will be sent.
These addresses may be set manually by entering the information in the address
fields of the Network Parameters page of e-DiagTools, or set using the TopTools
Device Manager Master Catalog Address

The Master Catalogue web address is used by e-DiagTools when updating the
BIOS. See the section on BIOS update for use of the Master Catalogue URLs, on
page 19.
Default Settings for INI files
These configuration (.INI) files are stored in the root directory of the Utility
Partition.
HiPaConf.INI
The file HiPaConf.INI is used to define:
•The text for the Utility Partition activation message
•The time-out value for the Utility Partition activation message
•The key to be used to enter the Utility Partition when the activation message is
shown.

These values are interpreted as follows:
At startup, the Welcome Message of two lines (Message1 & Message2) is displayed
for the established time period (Time-out). Press (Key) F10 during this time to
open a boot menu of e-DiagTools local options.
Network.INI
The file Network.INI has no default settings. The values defined in this file are
populated by the LAN Configuration Agent or the Toptools Device Manager.
In cases where DHCP is used with TopTools, most values in the Network.INI file
are ignored. Only the web proxy and SMTP mail relay addresses will be used.

The client PC IP configuration parameters are stored on the HP Utility Partition.
These parameters identify the PC and are required to send the Support Ticket by
e-Mail to the Support Provider or BIOS Update:
•Web proxy IP address and port number
•SMTP mail relay address/hostname
•IP address
•IP subnet mask
•DNS address.
In e-DiagTools v3.01, all the above fields are accessible and can be edited by
advanced users.
In addition, two methods are available for setting or updating the client PC IP
configuration parameters:
•Directly (locally) via the LAN Configuration Agent.
•Remotely, using TopTools Device Manager to force an update of the LAN
Configuration Agent (see page 29).
When the LAN Configuration Agent is active on an e-DiagTools PC, the LAN
configuration parameters used by e-DiagTools will be synchronized with those
used by Windows each time the operating system is started. The LAN configuration
agent will store the LAN configuration parameters in the Network.INI
configuration file on the Utility Partition.
What is the LAN Configuration Agent?
The LAN Configuration Agent is part of the e-DiagTools solution. It is a software
application pre-loaded on HP PCs able to make use of e-DiagTools. It is also
available separately from the e-DiagTools support web site. When active, the LAN
Configuration Agent runs each time Windows starts. It gathers the IP configuration
of the client PC and stores this in the configuration file Network.INI on the
Utility Partition. This permits e-DiagTools to make use of the same IP configuration
used under Windows.
LAN Configuration Agent, Local Interface
The Agent is provided with a Windows-based user interface for ease of operation. A
check-box allows you to keep or to renew the current LAN configuration data at
subsequent startups.

3 LAN Configuration Agent
Client IP Configuration
To access the LAN Configuration Agent interface locally, use:
Start > Programs > HP e-DiagTools > e-DiagTools LAN Configuration
Agent
When the checkbox is selected, the network settings detected by the Agent are
copied to the Utility Partition IP configuration file Network.INI at each Windows
startup.
If the option is unchecked, the LAN Configuration Agent does not copy new data to
the Utility Partition file. This means that settings already stored in the file are not
overwritten and remain valid.
NOTE When you are using HP TopTools to implement the e-DiagTools network
configuration, the Agent must be set to Copy Network Settings at each system startup.
Network.INI
The LAN Configuration Agent makes use of the file Network.INI.This is one of
the two INI files stored in the root directory of the Utility Partition (HiPaConf.INI
and Network.INI) see “Default Settings for INI files” on page 12.

A web update client is included in e-DiagTools to simplify this task. This software
will check automatically for BIOS updates on HP’s website, download and install
the updates.
When one of the Update BIOS
options is selected from the e-DiagTools boot menu,
the web update client is activated.
NOTE The web update client is able to pass through web proxies used at customers’ sites,
as this parameter is set either by the LAN Configuration Agent (see page 14) or by
the TopTools Device Manager (see “Configure e-DiagTools Settings”, page 24).
If you want to inhibit managed PCs from using this feature, these two BIOS-related
menu options can be disabled using the TopTools Device Manager. Moreover, on
HP PCs with the hardware monitoring BIOS features, the Update BIOS options will
only execute on successful entry of the BIOS’ administrator password by the user.
How the BIOS Update Works
When one of the Boot Menu options Update BIOS or Update BIOS, clearing settings is
selected, e-DiagTools starts a client update program.
The client update program connects to the update server either by Internet or
Intranet, and checks for BIOS updates:
1The web update client program connects to the Master Catalog web site
specified in the configuration parameters.
2The master catalog supplies the web update client versions which are available
on the web update server, plus a map showing which product-specific catalog
must be used with each PC model.
3The web update client copies the master catalog to a local location, and
compares its own client version with the latest web update client available on the
web site. The web update client will then update itself if necessary.
4The web update client then obtains the ID and the Product String of the PC.
These together define the client PC model. The version number of the currently
installed BIOS is also determined. These three values are obtained from the BIOS
DMI tables. The web update client uses the client PC model to establish which
specific catalog within the master catalog is used for this platform.
