This equipment has been designed to be used by an
able bodied adult. If you suffer from either a temporary
or permanent disability, you must seek expert advice before
using this equipment.
Never use this equipment if you are ill, feeling
tired, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The hirer has a responsibility to ensure that all necessary
risk assessments have been completed prior to the use
of this equipment.
This equipment should only be used by an operator
who has been deemed competent to do so by
his/her employer.
Keep children, animals and bystanders away from
the work area. Cordon off a NO GO area using cones
and either barriers or tape, available for hire from your local
HSS Hire Shop.
This equipment should only be used by a competent
person who has received instruction and
demonstration from a suitably trained HSS staff
member at the point of hire, and who has read and
understood these instructions.

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment
Regulations 1998 (PUWER) extends its application
to people who have control to any extent of:
Work equipment.
A person at work who uses or supervises or
manages the use of work equipment.
Or
The way in which work equipment is used.
Anyone using this chainsaw at their work should
have received adequate training and be competent
in the use of a chainsaw for the task being
performed.
If this work involves use of the saw on or in a tree
the operator may need to hold a certificate of
competence.
This equipment generates potentially harmful
noise levels. To comply with health and safety at work
regulations, ear defenders must be worn by everyone in the
vicinity.
Wear practical clothing and steel
toe capped boots beneath the
HSS chainsaw Safety Kit supplied as part of the hire - the kit
consists of a safety helmet with visor and ear defenders,
gauntlets, plus ballistic-nylon jacket, overtrousers and spats.
Wear all items and DO NOT substitute any other
garments for those supplied in the Chain Saw Safety Kit.
Note that this safety wear is cleaned and maintained
by HSS for your comfort.
Avoid loose garments and jewellery that could catch
in moving parts. Tie back long hair.
Make sure you understand how to switch the chainsaw
OFF before switching ON, in case you get into difficulty.
Never use the chainsaw unless there is someone within
earshot to summon help in the event of an accident.
Never tamper with any safety devices fitted to this machine.
Ensure the work area is well lit and ventilated. Do not
work near flammable gases or liquids.
Always unplug the chain saw from its power supply
when not in use and replace the chain bar cover,
never leave it unattended.
Think before you cut. Work out where the tree or branch
will fall and clear the danger area. Remove trip hazards and
ensure you have a clear emergency escape route.
Watch your footing. Think twice before working
anywhere other than on firm, level ground. Never work
in slippery or wet conditions.
Never work above ground level unless you have been
specially trained for the job, not even from a ladder or
steps. And never work near overhead cables.
Always check the equipment’s condition before use.
If it shows signs of excessive wear or damage particularly to
the chain and power supply cable do not use it. Return it
to your local HSS Hire Shop.
Always switch OFF then unplug the saw from its
power supply before attempting to clean, service or
adjust it.

HSS Electric Chainsaws are supplied with a dedicated
Garden Safety Lead, which incorporates an RCD
(Residual Current-Operated Device).
Instructions on its use will be found in Operating &
Safety Guide No 621, supplied with the safety lead.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, only use the RCD
protected lead supplied with the chainsaw.
The RCD lead supplied with this machine is there to protect
you. DO NOT ADAPT OR BY-PASS IT. If you cut the cable,
isolate the lead from the power supply and contact your
local HSS Hire Shop.
If the equipment fails, or if its flex or plug becomes
damaged, return it. Never try to repair it yourself. Keep flexes
out of harm’s way, and clear of the work area. Extension
leads should be fully unwound and loosely coiled, away
from the equipment. Never run them through water, over
sharp edges or where they could trip someone.
Keep the equipment dry, using electrical equipment in very
damp or wet conditions can be dangerous.Ensure the
chainsaw and power supply socket are switched OFF before
plugging into the
power supply.
GGEETTTTIINNGGSSTTAARRTTEEDD
The chainsaw is supplied with a chainsaw safety kit,
this is included in the hire price, WEAR ALL ITEMS
SUPPLIED. Ensure you are wearing the kit BEFORE
starting and when using the chainsaw.
Check the chain oil reservoir is full and top up with
non-fling chain oil if necessary (available from HSS).
Continue to check the oil level at 15 - 20 minute
intervals. Clean the filler cap before removing or replacing it.
Place the saw on firm, level ground and set the chainbrake.
Simply pull the lever backward until you hear it click.
Keep your right hand on the ON/OFF switch grip and
your left hand on the bar grip at all times.
To start the saw, push the lock OFF button with your thumb,
then squeeze the ON/OFF trigger with your index finger. To
stop, simply release the ON/OFF trigger.

Never work with the saw above shoulder height.
Adopt a stable, comfortable stance - one that gives a
good view of the cut - keeping the whole of your body
clear of the chain.
