HSS Hire Hire Shops 918 Troubleshooting guide

Powered
Carpet Cleaner
Hire Shops
A medium-sized machine with
built-in brush.
Operating & Safety Guide 918
Never push the equipment beyond its design
limits. If it will not do what you want with reasonable
ease and speed, assume you have the wrong size or type
of carpet cleaner for the job. Contact your local HSS Hire
Shop for advice.
Never fill a carpet cleaner with water that’s hotter
than your hand can bear.
Use only cleaning products supplied by HSS and
follow the instructions on the containers (and the
machine) for details regarding their use.
Keep the equipment clean, you will find this less of a
chore if you clean it regularly, rather than wait until the
end of the hire period.
Handle the equipment with care. Avoid dropping it,
knocking it, or otherwise exposing it to damage.
When not in use, store the equipment somewhere
clean, dry and safe from thieves. Protect this
equipment from frost and freezing temperatures.
Switch OFF the brush head and spray pump.
Disconnect the
spray connection
(see illustration) from
the clean water
tank solution outlet
and fit one end of
the small drain hose
(clipped to the rear of
the unit) to the
solution outlet and
put the other in the
waste tank.
You can now empty
the clean water tank by setting the spray pump
switch to ON.
Once empty, switch OFF the spray pump. You can
now unplug the machine.
Disconnect the drain hose and reattach to the rear
of the unit then reconnect the spray connection to
the clean water tank solution outlet.
Next, remove the machine’s plastic cover, empty and
rinse out the waste tank, then re-assemble the
machine ready for return to your local HSS Hire Shop.

For advice on the safety and suitability of this equipment
contact your local HSS Hire Shop.
There is a serious risk of personal injury if you do
not follow all instructions laid down in this guide.
This equipment should be used by an able bodied,
competent adult who has read and understood these
instructions. Anyone with either a temporary or
permanent disability, should seek expert advice before
using it.
Keep children, animals and bystanders away from
the work area. Cordon off a NO GO area using
cones and either barriers or tape, available for hire
from your local HSS Hire Shop.
Never use this equipment if you are ill,
feeling tired, or under the influence of
alcohol or drugs.
Keep cleaning equipment and chemicals out of the
reach of children and pets.
Always switch OFF and unplug the equipment
when not in use. Never leave the machine ON and
unattended.
Never operate electric cleaning equipment or
electric switches with wet hands.
Never use HSS carpet cleaners to remove asbestos
and similarly dangerous materials.
Never carry or pull the equipment by its power
supply cable.
COSHH information sheets are available from your
local HSS Hire Shop.
Most HSS Powered Carpet Cleaners plug into a
standard 240V 13amp power socket. However,
110V models (with a round yellow plug) must be
provided with a suitable 110V generated supply, or
powered from the mains via a suitable 110V transformer.
If the equipment fails, or if its power supply cable
or plug becomes damaged, return it. Never try to
repair it yourself.
Keep cables out of harm’s way, and clear of the
work area.
Extension leads should be fully unwound and
loosely coiled, away from the equipment. Never
run them through water, over sharp edges or
where they could trip someone.
Avoid spilling liquid over the machine.
Keep the equipment dry, using electrical
equipment in very damp or wet conditions can be
dangerous.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, always
use a suitable RCD (Residual Current-Operated
Device) available from your local HSS Hire Shop.
ELECTRICAL SAFETY
GENERAL SAFETY Ensure the Carpet Cleaner and power socket are
switched OFF before plugging into the power
supply.
Clear the room of all furniture, if this is impractical,
the furniture will have to be moved around as the
work progresses. Tie up any long curtains that touch
the floor.
Vacuum the entire carpet and remove anything left
behind by the vac.
Take the unit into the room and unroll the
power lead.
Read This Carefully!
IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS, DO NOT CONTINUE,
CONTACT YOUR LOCAL HSS HIRE SHOP FOR
ADVICE.
Make sure that the carpet is securely fixed and
that all seams are tightly sewn together or stuck
down (or shrinkage may occur). Pre-treat heavily
soiled or stained areas with pre-spotter following
the instructions on the product’s container. You
can now begin the cleaning process proper.
Following the instructions for the particular
machine you are using.
If the carpet has not been cleaned before, try
cleaning a small area, not normally on view
(under the sofa for example) to see if the colour
is fast. In any case, take special care not to over-
wet any part of the carpet or it could shrink.
Shrinkage can occur with any carpet if it is
allowed to become over-wet and left for a
period of time. The most common carpet type to
shrink is hessian backed these natural fibres
shrink if soaked and left to dry naturally.
So... use the minimum amount of cleaning
solution and ensure you remove as much as
possible. To avoid dirtying areas you have just
cleaned, always work backwards, aiming to end
at a convenient doorway.
When you have finished cleaning, leave the
carpet until it has completely dried.
If furniture has to be left in the room, and
manoeuvred as the work progresses, ensure you
create a barrier (use clean plastic bagging)
between the carpet and legs or casters. This will
stop staining of the carpet and rust forming on
the legs/casters.
If for some reason you have to walk on the
carpet before it has dried, DO NOT wear shoes,
slippers or socks. All may contain non-fast dye
that may permanently damage the carpet, ONLY
walk on the carpet in clean bare feet.
GETTING STARTED
NOTE; This machine must be switched OFF and
unplugged from its power supply whenever you
are making any adjustments to it!
Lift off the machine’s transparent plastic top, followed by
the waste tank and add 200 ml of cleaning solution
to the clean water tank beneath.
Fill the clean water tank with clean, hand hot water
and add 100 ml of defoamer to the waste tank.
Avoid spilling any fluid over the machine. Small
spills must be wiped up immediately, if you spill a
large amount, STOP and contact your local HSS
Hire Shop for advice.
Having refitted both waste tank and plastic cover,
plug the machine into the power supply and
switch the supply ON.
There are three rocker type ON / OFF switches
fitted to the top of the unit (see illustration) these
control the vacuum pump, brush head and spray
pump respectively.
The spray pump rocker switch is not used during
normal operation. It is only used when you have
finished with the cleaner and need to empty the
remains of the clean water tank.
For normal use, the spray is activated by squeezing
the hand lever on the control handle.
To operate the carpet cleaner, switch ON the vacuum
pump and the brush head.
BASIC TECHNIQUES Draw the machine backward over a strip of carpet,
whilst operating the spray control hand lever.
Aim to tackle a strip about 2m long, stopping
spraying roughly 300mm from the end.
Repeat this action until the entire carpet has been
covered.
Monitor the waste tank water level and empty
when about three-quarters full. Remove the plastic
cover, lift off the tank and empty the contents down a sink.
If the machine stops spraying or if foam/liquid
emerges from the exhaust, switch OFF at once.
Empty the waste tank (see ‘FINISHING OFF’) and refill
the clean water tank (see ‘GETTING STARTED’).
