SWear protective gear. Always use steel-
toed safety footwear with non-slip soles;
snug-fitting clothing; heavy-duty, non-slip
gloves; eye protection such as non-fog-
ging, vented goggles or face screen; an
approvedsafetyhardhat;andsoundbarri-
ers (ear plugs or mufflers) to protect your
hearing. Regularusersshouldhavehear-
ing checked regularly as chain saw noise
can damage hearing. Secure hair above
shoulderlength.
SKeepall parts of your body away from the
chain when the engine is running.
SKeepchildren,bystanders,and animalsa
minimumof30feet(10meters)awayfrom
the work area. Do not allow other people
or animals to be near thechain saw when
starting or operatingthe chain saw.
SDo not handle or operate a chain saw
whenyouarefatigued,ill,orupset,orifyou
have taken alcohol, drugs, or medication.
You must be in good physical condition
and mentally alert. Chain saw work is
strenuous. If you have any conditionthat
might be aggravated by strenuous work,
check withyour doctorbefore operatinga
chain saw.
SCarefullyplanyoursawingoperationinad-
vance. Donotstartcuttinguntilyouhavea
clearworkarea,securefooting,and,ifyou
are fellingtrees, a plannedretreat path.
OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELY
SDonotoperateachainsawwithonehand.
Seriousinjuryto theoperator, helpers,by-
standersor any combinationof theseper-
sons may result from one-handedopera-
tion. A chain saw is intended for
two-handeduse.
SOperatethechainsawonlyinawell-venti-
latedoutdoorarea.
SDo not operate saw from a ladder or in a
tree.
SMakesure thechainwill notmake contact
with any object while starting the engine.
Never try to start the saw when the guide
bar is in a cut.
SDo not putpressureon thesaw at theend
of the cut. Applying pressure can cause
you to lose control when the cut is com-
pleted.
SStop the engine before setting the saw
down.
SDo not operate a chain saw that is dam-
aged, improperly adjusted, or not com-
pletely and securely assembled. Always
replace bar, chain, hand guard, or chain
brakeimmediatelyifitbecomesdamaged,
broken or is otherwiseremoved.
SWith the engine stopped, hand carry the
chainsawwiththe muffler away fromyour
body, and the guide bar and chain to the
rear, preferably covered with a scabbard.
MAINTAIN YOUR SAW IN GOOD
WORKING ORDER
SHaveallchainsawserviceperformedbya
qualifiedservicedealerwiththeexception
oftheitemslistedinthemaintenancesec-
tionofthismanual. Forexample,ifimprop-
ertoolsareusedtoremoveorholdthefly-
wheelwhenservicingtheclutch,structural
damage to the flywheel can occur and
cause the flywheelto burst.
SMake certainthe saw chain stops moving
when the throttle trigger is released. For
correction, refer to CARBURETOR AD-
JUSTMENTS.
SNever modify your saw in any way.
SKeepthehandlesdry,clean,andfreeofoil
or fuel mixture.
SWith the engine stopped, hand carry the
chainsawwiththe muffler away fromyour
body, and the guide bar and chain to the
rear, preferably covered with a guide bar
cover.
SKeep fuel and oil caps, screws, and fas-
teners securely tightened.
SUse only Husqvarnaaccessories and re-
placementparts as recommended.
HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION
SDo not smoke while handlingfuel or while
operatingthe saw.
SEliminateallsources of sparks or flame in
the areas where fuel is mixed or poured.

Thereshouldbenosmoking,openflames,
orworkthatcouldcausesparks. Allowen-
gine to cool before refueling.
SMix and pour fuel in an outdoor area on
bare ground;store fuel in a cool, dry, well
ventilated place; and use an approved,
marked container for all fuel purposes.
Wipe up all fuel spills beforestartingsaw.
SMove at least 10feet (3meters) from fuel-
ing site before startingengine.
STurn the engine off and let saw cool in a
non-combustiblearea, not on dry leaves,
straw, paper, etc. Slowlyremove fuelcap
and refuel unit.
SStoretheunitandfuelinanareawherefuel
vapors cannot reach sparks or open
flamesfromwaterheaters,electricmotors
or switches, furnaces, etc.
KICKBACK
WARNING: Avoid kickback which
can result in seriousinjury. Kickbackis the
backward,upwardorsuddenforwardmotion
of the guide bar occurring when the saw
chainneartheuppertip oftheguidebarcon-
tacts any object such as a log or branch,or
when the wood closes in and pinches the
sawchaininthecut.Contactingaforeignob-
ject in the wood can also result in loss of
chain saw control.
SRotationalKickbackcanoccurwhenthe
movingchaincontactsanobjectattheup-
per tip of the guide bar. This contact can
cause the chain to dig into the object,
which stops the chain for an instant. The
result is a lightning fast, reverse reaction
which kicks the guidebar up and back to-
ward the operator.
SPinch-Kickbackcan occur when the the
wood closes in and pinches the moving
saw chain in the cut along the top of the
guide bar and the saw chain is suddenly
stopped. This sudden stopping of the
chain results in a reversal of the chain
force used to cut wood and causes the
sawtomoveintheoppositedirectionofthe
chain rotation. The saw is driven straight
back towardthe operator.
SPull-In can occur when the moving chain
contactsaforeignobjectinthewoodinthe
cut along the bottomof the guide bar and
the saw chain is suddenly stopped. This
suddenstoppingpullsthesawforwardand
away from the operator and could easily
cause the operator to lose control of the
saw.
Avoid Pinch--Kickback:
SBe extremely aware of situations or ob-
structionsthatcancausematerialtopinch
the top of or otherwisestop the chain.
SDo not cut more than one log at a time.
SDo not twist the saw as the bar is with-
drawn from an undercut when bucking.
Avoid Pull--In:
SAlwaysbegincuttingwiththeengineatfull
speedandthesawhousingagainstwood.
SUse wedges made of plastic or wood.
Never use metal to hold the cut open.

Clear The Working Area
REDUCE THE CHANCE OF
KICKBACK
SRecognize that kickback can happen.
With a basic understanding of kickback,
you can reduce the element of surprise
which contributes to accidents.
SNeverletthemovingchaincontactanyob-
ject at the tip of the guide bar.
SKeep the working area free from obstruc-
tionssuchasothertrees,branches,rocks,
fences, stumps, etc. Eliminate or avoid
any obstructionthatyour saw chain could
hit while you are cutting. When cutting a
branch, do not let the guide bar contact
branch or other objects around it.
SKeep your saw chain sharp and properly
tensioned. A loose or dull chain can in-
crease the chance of kickback occurring.
Follow manufacturer’s chain sharpening
andmaintenanceinstructions. Checkten-
sion at regular intervals with the engine
stopped, never with the engine running.
Makesurethebarclampnutsaresecurely
tightenedafter tensioningthe chain.
SBeginandcontinuecuttingatfullspeed. If
the chain is moving at a slower speed,
thereis greaterchanceofkickbackoccur-
ring.
SCut one log at a time.
SUse extreme caution when re-entering a
previous cut.
SDo not attempt cuts starting with the tip of
the bar (plungecuts).
SWatchfor shiftinglogsor other forcesthat
could close a cut and pinch or fall into
chain.
SUse the Reduced--Kickback Guide Bar
and Low--Kickback Chain specified for
your saw.

SKeepagood,firmgriponthesawwithboth
hands when the engine is running and
don’tletgo. Afirmgripwillhelpyoureduce
kickback and maintain controlof the saw.
Keep the fingers of your left hand encir-
cling and your left thumb under the front
handlebar. Keep your right hand com-
pletely around the rear handle whether
yourarerighthandedorlefthanded. Keep
your left arm straight with the elbow
locked.
SPositionyourlefthandonthefronthandle-
bar so it is in a straightlinewith your right
hand on the rear handle when making
buckingcuts. Never reverserightandleft
handpositionsfor any type of cutting.
SStandwithyourweightevenlybalancedon
both feet.
SStandslightly tothe left side ofthe saw to
keep your body from being in a direct line
with the cutting chain.
SDo notoverreach. You couldbe drawnor
thrown off balanceand lose control of the
saw.
SDonotcutaboveshoulderheight. Itisdiffi-
cult to maintain control of saw above
shoulderheight.
KICKBACKSAFETY FEATURES
WARNING: The following features
are includedon your saw to help reduce the
hazardof kickback; however, such features
willnottotallyeliminatethisdangerousreac-
tion. Asachainsaw user,donotrelyonlyon
safety devices. You must follow all safety
precautions, instructions, and maintenance
in this manual to help avoid kickback and
other forces which can result in serious
injury.
SReduced--Kickback Guide Bar, designed
with a small radius tip which reduces the
size of the kickback danger zone on the
bar tip. A Reduced--KickbackGuide Bar
hasbeendemonstratedtosignificantlyre-
ducethenumberandseriousnessofkick-
backs when tested in accordance with
safety requirementsfor gasolinepowered
chain saws as set by ANSI B175.1.

SPosition of front and rear handlebars,de-
signedwithdistancebetweenhandlesand
“in-line”with each other. The spreadand
“in-line”positionof the hands providedby
this design work together to give balance
and resistance in controlling the pivot of
the saw back toward the operator if kick-
back occurs.
CHAIN BRAKE AND CKA ANGLE
SChainBrake,designedtostopthechainin
the eventof kickback.
WARNING: WE DO NOT REP-
RESENT AND YOU SHOULD NOT AS-
SUME THAT THE CHAIN BRAKE WILL
PROTECT YOU IN THE EVENT OF A
KICKBACK. Kickback is a lightningfast ac-
tion which throws the barand rotatingchain
back and up towardtheoperator. Kickback
canbecausedbyallowingcontactofthebar
tip in the danger zone with any hard object.
Kickbackcanalsobecausedbypinchingthe
sawchainalongthetopoftheguidebar. This
action may push the guide bar rapidly back
toward the operator. Either of these events
may cause you to lose control of the saw
which could result in serious injury or even
death. DONOTRELYUPONANYOFTHE
DEVICES BUILT INTO YOUR SAW. YOU
SHOULDUSETHESAW PROPERLYAND
CAREFULLY TO AVOID KICKBACK. Re-
duced--kickback guide bars and low--kick-
back saw chains reduce the chance and
magnitude of kickback and are recom-
mended. Yoursawhasalowkickbackchain
andbarasoriginalequipment. Repairsona
chain brake should be made by an autho-
rized servicing dealer. Take your unit to the
place of purchase if purchased from a
HusqvarnaServicingDealer, or to the near-
est Authorized HusqvarnaService Dealer.

STip contact in some cases may cause a
lightningfast reverse REACTION,kicking
theguidebarupandbacktowardtheoper-
ator.
SPinchingthesawchainalongthetopofthe
guide bar may push the guide bar rapidly

WARNING: Computed kickback
angle(CKA) listedon your saw and listed in
the CKA table below represents angle of
kickback your bar and chain combinations
will have when tested in accordance with
CSA(CanadianStandardsAssociation)and
ANSI standards.When purchasingreplace-
ment bar and chain, considerations should
be given to the lower CKA values. Lower
CKA values represent safer angles to the
user, highervalues indicatemore angleand
higher kick energies.Computedanglesrep-
resented in the non-activated column indi-
catetotalenergyandangleassociatedwith-
out activation of the chain brake during
kickback. Activated angle represents chain
stopping time relative to activation angle of
chainbreak andresultingkick angle of saw.
In all cases lower CKA values represent a
safer operatingenvironmentfor the user.
The followingguide barand chaincombina-
tions meet kickback requirements of CSA
Standards Z62.1, Z62.3, & ANSI B175.1
when used on saws listed in this manual.
Use of bar and chain combinations other
than those listed is not recommended and
may not meet the CKA requirements per
standard.

SAn adjustingpin and screw is used to ad-
just the tension of the chain. It is very im-
portant when assembling the bar, that the
pin located on the adjusting screw aligns
intoaholeinthebar. Turningthescrewwill
move the adjustmentpinup and downthe
screw. Locatethis adjustmentbeforeyou
beginmountingthe bar ontothe saw. See
illustration.

only. Oncethechainistensioned,youwill
need to tighten chain brake nuts.
CHAIN TENSION (Including units with
chain already installed)
NOTE:When adjusting chain tension,
make sure the bar nuts are fingertightonly.
Attemptingtotensionthechainwhenthebar
nuts are tight can cause damage.
Checking the tension:
Use the screwdriver endof thecombination
screwdriver/wrench tool to move the chain
aroundthebar.Ifthechaindoesnotrotate,it
istootight.Iftooloose, thechainwillsagbe-
low the bar.

Adjusting the tension:
Chain tension is very important. Chain
stretches during use. This is especiallytrue
duringthe first few times you use your saw.
Always check chain tension each time you
use and refuel your saw.
You can adjust the chain tension by loosening
the bar clamp nuts and turning the adjusting
screw 1/4 of a turn while lifting up on the bar.
SIf chain is too tight, turn adjusting
screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise.

SLift up the tip of the bar and tighten the

FUELING & LUBRICATION
FUELING ENGINE
WARNING: Removefuelcapslowly
when refueling.
This engine is certified to operate on
unleaded gasoline. Before operation,
gasoline must be mixed with a goodquality
2-cycle air-cooledengine oil designedto be
mixedataratio of50:1. (A 50:1 ratio is
obtained by mixing 2.5 ounces of oil with 1
gallonof unleadedgasoline).DO NOT USE
automotiveorboat oil. Theseoils willcause
enginedamage. Whenmixingfuelfollowthe
instructionsprintedonthecontainer.Always
read and followthe safety rules listed under
HANDLEFUEL WITH CAUTION.
BAR AND CHAIN LUBRICATION
The bar and chain require continuouslubri-
cation. Lubricationis providedby the auto-
matic oiler system when the oil tank is kept
filled.Lack of oil will quickly ruin the bar and
chain. Too little oil will cause overheating
shownbysmokecomingfromthechainand/
or discolorationof the bar.
In freezingweatheroilwill thicken,makingit
necessary to thin bar and chain oil with a
smallamount(5to10%)of#1DieselFuelor
kerosene. Bar and chain oil must be free
flowingfortheoilsystemtopumpenoughoil
for adequatelubrication.
Genuine Husqvarna bar and chain oil is rec-
ommended to protect your unit against exces-
sive wear from heat and friction. Husqvarnaoil
resists high temperature thinning.
If Husqvarnabar oil is not available,use agood
grade SAE 30 oil.
SNever use waste oil for bar and chain lu-
brication.
SAlways stop the engine before removing
the oil cap.
IMPORTANT
Experience indicates that alcohol--blended
fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or
methanol) can attract moisture which leads
to separation and formation of acids during
storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel
system of an engine while in storage. To
avoid engine problems, the fuel system
should be emptied before storage for 30
days or longer. Drain the gas tank, start the
engine and let it run until the fuel lines and
carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel next
season. See STORAGE section for addi-
tionalinformation.
OPERATING YOUR UNIT
WARNING: The chain must not move
when the engine runs at idle speed. If the chain
moves at idle speed refer to CARBURETOR
ADJUSTMENT within this manual. Avoid con-
tact with the muffler. A hot muffler can cause
serious burns.
To stop the engine move the switch to the
STOP position.
To start the engine hold the saw firmly on
the ground as illustrated below. Make sure
the chain is free to turn without contacting
any object.
Hold saw firmly while pullingstarter rope.
Use only 15”--18”of rope per pull.
Important points to remember
Whenpullingthestarterrope,donotusethe
full extent of the rope as this can cause the
rope to break. Do not let starter rope snap
back.Holdthehandleandlettheroperewind
slowly.

Forcoldweatherstarting,starttheunitatfull
choke; allow the engine to warm up before
squeezingthe throttletrigger.
NOTE: Do not cut materialwiththe choke/
fast idle lever at the FULL CHOKE position.
STARTING A COLD ENGINE (or a
warm engine after running out of fuel)
NOTE:In the following steps, when the cho-
ke/fast idle lever is pulled out to the full extent,
the correct throttle setting for starting is set au-
tomatically.
SMoveON/STOPswitchtotheONposition.
SPullthe choke/fast idlelever out to thefull
extent.
SPullthestarterropequicklywith yourright
handa maximum of 10 times.
SPushthechoke/fastidleleverincomplete-
ly (to the OFF CHOKE position).
SPullthestarterropequicklywith yourright
hand until the enginestarts.
SAllowtheenginetorunforapproximately5
seconds. Then, squeeze and release
throttletriggerto allow engineto returnto
idle speed.

DIFFICULT STARTING (or starting a
flooded engine)
The engine may be flooded with too much
fuel if it has not startedafter 10 pulls.
Flooded engines can be cleared of excess
fuel by following the warm engine starting
procedure listed above. Insure the ON/
STOP switch is in the ON position.

CHAIN BRAKE
WARNING: WE DO NOT REP-

PROTECT YOU IN THE EVENT OF A
KICKBACK. Kickback is a lightningfast ac-
tion which throws the barand rotatingchain
back and up towardtheoperator. Kickback
canbecausedbyallowingcontactofthebar
tip in the danger zone with any hard object.
Kickbackcanalsobecausedbypinchingthe
sawchainalongthetopoftheguidebar. This
action may push the guide bar rapidly back
toward the operator. Either of these events
may cause you to lose control of the saw
which could result in serious injury or even
death. DONOTRELYUPONANYOFTHE
DEVICES BUILT INTO YOUR SAW. YOU
SHOULDUSETHESAW PROPERLYAND
CAREFULLY TO AVOID KICKBACK. Re-
duced--kickback guide bars and low--kick-
back saw chains reduce the chance and
magnitude of kickback and are recom-
mended. Yoursawhasalowkickbackchain
and bar as original equipment. If the brake
band is worn too thinit may break whenthe
chainbrakeistriggered.Withabrokenbrake
band,thechainbrakewillnotstopthechain.
The chain brake should be replaced by an
authorizedservice dealerif any part is worn
to less than1/32!thick. Repairson a chain
brakeshouldbe madeby an authorizedser-
vice dealer. Take your unit to the place of
purchase if purchased from a Husqvarna
Servicing Dealer, or to the nearest Autho-
rized HusqvarnaService Dealer.
SThis saw is equipped with a chain brake.
The brake is designedto stop the chain if
kickback occurs.
SThe inertia--activated chain brake is
activatedif thefronthandguardis pushed
forward, either manually (by hand) or
automatically(by sudden movement).
SIf the brake is already activated, it is
disengagedbypullingthefronthandguard
back toward the front handle as far as
possible.
SWhencuttingwiththesaw,thechainbrake

dles with both hands and apply full throttle.

ing your grip around the front handle. The
chain should stop immediately.

lowing procedure, the engine must be turned

ject. Release your grip on the front handle
and let the saw, by its own weight, rotate

CUTTING METHODS
IMPORTANT POINTS
SCheck chain tension before first use and
after 1 minute of operation. See CHAIN
TENSION in the ASSEMBLY section.
SCut wood only. Do not cut metal, plastics,
masonry, non-wood building materials, etc.
SStop the saw if the chain strikes a foreign
object. Inspectthesawandrepairpartsas
necessary.
SKeepthechainoutofdirtandsand. Evena
smallamountofdirtwillquicklydullachain
and increase the possibilityof kickback.
SPracticecuttinga few smalllogs usingthe
followingtechniquestogetthe“feel”ofus-
ing your saw before you begin a major
sawing operation.
SSqueezethe throttletrigger andallow
the engine to reach full speed before
cutting.
SBegin cutting with the saw frame
against the log.
SKeep the engine at full speed the en-
tire time you are cutting.
SAllow the chain to cut for you. Exert
only light downwardpressure.
SReleasethethrottletriggeras soonas
the cut is completed,allowingthe en-
gine to idle. If you run the saw at full
throttle without a cutting load, unnec-
essary wear can occur.
STo avoid losing control when cut is
complete,donotputpressureonsaw
at end of cut.
SStop the engine before setting the saw
down after cutting.
TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES
WARNING: Check for broken or
dead branches which can fall while cutting
causingseriousinjury. Donotcutnearbuild-
ingsor electricalwiresifyoudonotknowthe
directionoftreefall,norcutatnightsinceyou
will not be ale to see well, nor during bad
weathersuchasrain,snow,or strongwinds,
etc. If thetreemakes contactwith anyutility
line, the utility company should be notified
immediately.
SCarefullyplanyoursawingoperationinad-
vance.
SCleartheworkarea. Youneedacleararea
allaroundthetreesoyoucanhavesecure
footing.
SThe chain saw operator should keep on
the uphill side of the terrain as the tree is
likelytorollorslidedownhillafteritisfelled.
SStudy the natural conditions that can cause
thetreetofallinaparticulardirection.
Natural conditions that can cause a tree to
fall in a particulardirectioninclude:
SThe wind directionand speed.
SThe lean of the tree. The lean of a tree
might not be apparent due to uneven or
slopingterrain. Useaplumborleveltode-
termine the directionof tree lean.
SWeight and branches on one side.
SSurroundingtrees and obstacles.
Look for decay and rot. Ifthetrunkisrotted,
it can snap and fall toward the operator.
Check for broken or dead branches which
can fall on you while cutting.
Make sure there is enough room for the tree to
fall. Maintain a distance of 2-1/2 tree lengths
from the nearest person or other objects. En-
gine noise can drown out a warning call.
Remove dirt, stones, loose bark, nails, sta-
ples,andwirefromthetreewherecutsareto
be made.

onal to the line of fall.

FELLING LARGE TREES
(15 cm in diameter or larger)
The notchmethodis used to fell largetrees.
Anotchiscutonthesideofthetreeinthede-
sired direction of fall. After a felling cut is
made on the opposite side of tree, the tree
will tend to fall into the notch.
NOTE: If the tree has large buttressroots,
removethembeforemakingthenotch. Ifus-
ing saw to remove buttress roots, keep saw
chainfromcontactinggroundtopreventdull-
ing of the chain.
NOTCH CUT AND FELLING THE
TREE
SMake notch cut by cutting the top of the
notchfirst. Cut through1/3 of thediameter
ofthetree.Nextcompletethenotchbycut-
ting the bottom of the notch. See illustra-
tion. Once the notch is cut remove the
notch of wood from the tree.
