1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 General Description
The Model 5381 Packaged Weather Station reports weather data from remote sites to a
central site. The standpipe acts as the sensor support, antenna tower and weather proof
housing for the transmitter.
1.2 Equipment Included
1> Standpipe
2> Top section
3> Antenna Mast and Sensor Crossarm
4> Antenna
5> Antenna cable
6> Data Transmitter
7> Solar Panel
Standard Sensors:
8> Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge
9> Relative Humidity and Temperature with Radiation Shield
10> Barometric Pressure
11> Wind Speed
12> Wind Direction
Optional:
13> Access door
1.3 Specifications
Height of mast: Standpipe 14 feet, Antenna 20 feet
Material: Aluminum with stainless steel hardware
2.0 INSTALLATION
2.1 Site Selection
Consider these factors these factors during site selection:
2.1.1 Rain Gauge
As a general rule, for any obstruction which extends above the gauge height, the
standpipe should be located at least twice the extended distance from the obstruction.
Because high winds and wind turbulence reduce the accuracy of a rain gauge, a site witha

consistent wind break is desirable, e.g. orchards, wind shields. Avoid areas where
individual or small groups of objects may set up troublesome eddy currents near the
gauge. It is usually better to have the gauge in a completely open area rather than near an
isolated object.
2.1.2 Wind Speed and Wind Direction
Open sites will give the most accurate wind data. The design of the 5081 Crossarm takes
the standpipe into account as a wind obstacle; however, the crossarm should be installed
perpendicular to the prevailing wind when possible.
2.1.3 Relative Humidity and Temperature
Be aware of microclimates that may adversely effect data collection; cold air drainage,
thermal sources, dense foliage, and localized open water may produce data that is not
representative of the area being monitored.
2.1.4 Other Considerations
The site should be representative for all the sensor parameters being measured for the
area being monitored. When conflicts arise choose the site that meetstherequirements for
the sensor parameter that requires the more accurate measurement.
2.2 Assembly
HydroLynx recommends attaching the antenna mast/crossarm to the standpipe before
installing the standpipe into the ground.
2.2.1 Antenna Mast/Crossarm
See Drawing AC107585.
!Adjust the sensor arms until sensor support pipes are vertical; use antenna mast for
reference.
!Align the wind direction sensor to North (as it will be installed) by rotating the sensor
support pipe to align the "N" (on the side of the sensor) to the correct angle.
!Check that all set screws on the crossarm are tight.
!Attach and align the solar panel (as installed).
!Secure the relative humidity/temperature radiation shield mounting.

2.2.2 Standpipe
Refer to the Basic Gauge Manual A102791 for:
!Antenna Mast/Crossarm to Standpipe
!Standpipe Installation
!Connections
!Verify Data Transmissions
2.2.3 Top Section
Refer to the 5054 Rain Gauge Manual A102861.
2.2.4 Check Alignments
Check:
!Wind Direction "N" is to the north.
!Solar Panel is to the south and adjusted to proper angle for site latitude.
!Optional directional antenna is adjusted to correct azimuth and elevation.
3.0 THEORY OF OPERATION
The 5381 Packaged Weather Station sensors utilize both digital and analog signals. The
AC Sine Wave signal from the wind speed sensor is not a digital signal but it is conditioned
by circuitry on the data transmitter logic board into digital pulses. Both digital and analog
signals are converted by the data transmitter into ALERT data values and transmitted to
the central site via RF link.
4.0 TESTING AND MAINTENANCE
4.1 Testing
4.1.1 Standard Tests
Refer to Basic Gauge manual.
4.1.2 Sensors
Refer to sensor manuals.
!Measure sensor parameter with appropriate test instrument.
!Compare measured data to transmitted data value. Refer to the calibration curves
locates in the Forms and Drawings section of the appropriate sensor manual.

4.1.3 Data Transmitter
Refer to Data Transmitter manual.
4.2 Calibration
Refer to the individual sensor manual for sensor calibration information.
4.3 Maintenance
Maintenance is critical to the performance of the sensors as well as to the longevity of the
equipment and mounting hardware. Regularly scheduled maintenance should be
performed using the maintenance report forms as a guide to the necessary procedures.
Refer to the Basic Gauge manual for general system maintenance information.Refertothe
individual sensor manual for each sensor's maintenance requirements.Maintenanceforms
are located in the appropriate manuals.
