Hyundai Kona Series User manual

Kona Electric Series II
Quick Guide
How to make the most
out of your Kona Electric
1How to unlock your Kona
Your Kona is equipped with a Smart Proximity Key that detects
if you have your key on yourself when approaching the car. The
car can be unlocked by simply pressing the unlock button on
the key remote or by using the button on the door handle.
2How to start the Kona
To start the Kona you need to press the power button on the
dashboard. You must depress the brake pedal whilst doing this just
like a normal vehicle.
3How to drive the Kona
To drive the Kona you must depress one of the buttons on the centre
console. These button’s (P,R,D,N) correspond to the normal stages of an
Automatic transmission.
P = Park. Use this when parking the car
R = Reverse. Use this when reversing the car
N = Neutral. This is used when you do not require any movement.
D = Drive. The most useful of all gears as this enables forward movement.
When the car is turned on a green vehicle light will appear on the dash.
The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) will disengage automatically when you
select your gear. You are good to go.
4Once on the move in your Kona
Once you are on the move, the Kona is almost no different to driving a
regular vehicle. You have the added benet of being able to use your
smartphone’s functions via Apple Carplay or Android Auto for navigation
and other purposes such as listening to music.
One thing you may notice is the paddle shifters attached to the back of
the steering wheel. These are for the brake regeneration system, which is
used to convert kinetic energy as recharge back to the battery. There are
four levels of brake regeneration (level 3 being the highest resistance),
which all alter the driving characteristics. Experiment with these but
usually level’s one or two will sufce for regular driving. Alternatively you
can leave the brake regeneration in ‘Auto’ mode thereby leaving the car
to decide the best level of brake regeneration
5Powering the Kona
This is the main point of difference of the Kona compared to a
conventional car. Instead of lling the vehicle with fuel when the tank
is almost empty the Kona must be ‘charged up’ when the battery runs
low. This is displayed on the dashboard in similar style to a fuel gauge.
There is also a ‘distance to empty’ gure displayed which will give you an
indication of your range based on current driving conditions.
Note: you should avoid running the battery to 0%. If you do happen
to run out of charge then please call 0800 HYUNDAI (498 632) for
roadside assistance.

7How to charge the Kona
To charge the Kona you need to complete the
following steps.
a) Park and turn off your Kona. Make sure to engage the
electric parking brake.
b) Open the plug ap. This is located at the front of the
vehicle (as shown in the image above). Ensure the car
is unlocked and press the ap to open.
c) Plug the Kona into the charging station or power plug.
If using a 3-pin powersocket or Type-2 charging station
you will use the supplied cable in the boot or if using
a rapid charging station then you will use the cable
attached to the charging station.
d) If you are using a public charge station then follow the
instructions provided. If using a 3-pin power socket
then charge will commence automatically.
e) Once charging has started you can track the progress
via the percentage gure on the dashboard or via the
three lights next to the charging port. Each of the lights
represents 33%. For example, two lights illuminated
equals 66% charged.
f) The car can be secured when charging if you wish to
complete other tasks. To do this simply lock the car as
you normally would and the plug will lock in position
until unlocked again.
g) Once the required charge percentage has been
reached then the car can be untethered from the cable
and then can be driven again as normal.
6Where to charge the Kona
The Kona is charged by simply plugging the vehicle into a
power source. There are several different power sources
ranging from your regular household power plug to a
variety of power sources that can be used to charge up
the Kona.
a) 12v Socket – You can charge using a regular
household power socket. This is completed by using
the supplied 3-pin plug & cable found in the boot of the
vehicle. Charge time from empty is 28-30 hours.
b) AC Fast Charging Station – These are located around
urban areas often in public spaces such as mall
carparks. They are often free to use and utilises the
supplied Type 2 cable found in the boot. Charge time
from empty is 9.5 hours.
c) Public DC Rapid Charge Station – The fastest way to
charge your Kona. These are also located in public
spaces and are usually ‘pay for use’. Charging time
from empty to 80% takes as little as 65 minutes. These
charging stations use a cable which is tethered to the
charging station.
Tip: To nd a public charging station we recommend
downloading the ‘Plugshare’ app for your phone. This
application can direct you to the nearest public charging
station. Make sure you set your lter to ‘Type 2 & Type 2
CCS Combo’ plug types.
Note: If the cable cannot be removed from the charging port then use the unlock button on the key remote as this will unlock the cable. This is because the
cable lock feature may be turned on which prevents the removal of the cable whilst the car is charging. To activate the cable lock feature there is a switch on
the right hand side of the steering wheel. Use this feature when you are using your own charging cable.
If you have any further questions then you can either refer to the owners
handbook found in the glovebox or contact AVIS on 0800 655 111
