Benefitsand KeyFeatures
Virtual Private Network
With VirtualPrivate Networking, an enterprise can establish adedicated
tunnel among branch offices and/or mobile employees. All data is encrypted
and decrypted via the pre-defined dedicated tunnel. This preventsany
hackers from stealing private information inthe public network. With this

4
functionality,anysub-network can be grouped as though theyare in the same
network.
Firewall
The PowerfulServer appliance provides apowerfulfirewall capable of
preventing hackers from attacking the gatewayor internal network. Many
famous DoS attacks can be detected and prevented. Whenever an attack is
detected, the system will alert the network manager that an attackhas
occurred. The network manager can then inspect the log information to find
the IPaddress that sent the packets.
EasyInstallation
In order to facilitate the use of the PowerfulServer appliance, the product
comeswith default settings that most network managers can install itwithout
anymodification. If the network manager needs to modifyanyofthe settings,
the Powerful Server applianceprovides an intuitiveWeb-based user
interface.
RAID (Redundant Arrayof Independent Disks)
RAID is ahard disk access technology that allocates space ofdisk drives that
utilize two or more drives in combination so as to increase fault tolerance and
improveoverall performance. Powerful Server appliancesupports 2types of
RAID, RAID 0 and RAID 1.
nRAID 0 Striped Disk Arraywithout Fault Tolerance: Provides
data striping (spreading out blocksofeach file across multiple disk
drives) but no redundancy. This improves performance but does not
deliver fault tolerance. If one drive fails then all data in the arrayis
lost. The size of this RAID type equal to sum ofDisk 1 and Disk 2.
nRAID 1 Mirroring Disk Array:Atechnique in which data is written
to two duplicate disks simultaneously. This wayifone ofthe disk
drives fails, the system can instantlyswitch to the other disk without
anyloss ofdata. The size ofthis RAID type equal to single Disk.

5
NetworkAttached Storage
Network-attached storage (NAS) is the concept ofshared storage on a
network. NAS transfers datausing industrystandard file sharing protocols
such asCIFS, AFP,NFS and FTP.Files can be shared simultaneouslyby
clients regardless of the operating system theyare using or the network
server theyare attached to. Thissolution provides convenient common
storage resources.
Dynamic DNS
Dynamic DNS allowsanyone wishing to reach your host bythe name only.
Dynamic DNS will map that name to your current IPaddress, which changes
each time you dial your Internet service provider. With aURLthat staysthe
same all the time regardless ofIPaddress your options become almost as
unlimited as anormal content provider like www.indiatimes.com or
www.yahoo.com.
USB Print Server
USB Print Server allows any computer in the network to share an USB printer.
It complieswith USB 2.0 specifications. And the users can print from any
computer over a LAN.
Personal Web Server
The Personal Web Server enables users to host an information type website
from their appliance. Create your website and place it on the appliance for the
world to see. Use it in combination with our built-in DDNS client and anyone
with a broadband connection can have their veryown website.
Personal POPE-mail Server
The Personal POP E-mail Server provides users the abilityto run apersonal
private e-mail server. Send e-mail you’re your registered domainname or just
create a DDNS account and have your personalized e-mail address.
FTPServer
FTPis the most secure, fastest, reliable method of transferring files. The FTP

6
server allowsyou full control over who can login to the Powerful Server
appliance, which files the user can accessor theycould upload data.
Power Management
We divide the power management function into three parts. These are Power
Down and Hard Disk Standby.
We’ll describe each part in detail below.
- Power Down
We turn the power down in several ways:
nPower Down byWeb
Please select System Management -> Administrator Settings. In
Power Down field, to select the enable radio button and then click
the applybutton.
nPower Down bypress the power button
nPrompt Power Down
Please press and hold the power button at least 4 seconds.
- Hard Disk Standby
If the hard disk is idle for a while, we would like the hard disk to enter
standbymode to reduce the consumption of power. In the left menu,
select NAS Management -> RAID Initialization Wizard, in HD Power
Management Setting, please select the time in the ‘Turn Off hard disk’
field (Figure 1.2). If you select ‘none’, the hard disk will not enter the
standbymode even ifit is always idle. Ifyou select ’5 mins’, the hard disk
will enter standbymode once it is idle for more than five minutes.

External Network Interface
External network interface includes ADSL/PPPoE , DHCPClient and
Fixed IPAddress settings. Make sure that the system information
webpage shows that your Link status is ‘Link Up’. Ifnot, please check
your connection and/orswitch the MDX switch located next to your WAN
port. We have to choose one of the three ways to configure the external
network interface. Theyare illustrated asfollows:
Example 1: If you are connecting through a fixed IPaddress from the ISP.
Example 2: If you are connecting through a dynamic IPaddress from ISP.
Example 3: If you usuallyenter a username and password to accessthe
Internet.
Example1:Fixed IP Address Settings
Ifyou haveafixed IPaddress from your ISPto access the Internet, please
followthe steps below:
1. Select the Fixed IPAddress radio button.
2. Enter the Public IPaddress.

18
3. Enter the External Gateway.
4. Enter the External Netmask.
5. Click the applybutton.
Example2:DHCPClient / Cable Modem
If you have a dynamic IPaddress from your ISPto access the Internet,
please select the DHCPClient radio button. Once the external IP
address is obtained via the DHCPprotocol, there is no need to give an
external IPaddress, external gatewayaddress or netmask. The DHCP
server will dynamicallyassign these fields. In general, you should choose
this option if you are connecting the PowerfulServer appliance to a cable
modem. Note: Cable modem users MUSTdisconnect the cable modem
from the wall outlet for at least 2 minutes before turning it on again. Some
cable modem connections need you to provide specific hardware address.
For the case, you should fill your hardware address that you get from your
ISPprovider in Hardware Addressfield to override the original hardware
address. However, it does not update the original hardware address
stored in EEPROM. Ifyou would not like to override the hardware address,
you should set each field ofthe HardwareAddress to zero “00”.

19
Example3:ADSLConnection
Most ADSLconnections do not give you a fixed IPaddress. In this case,
you must enter the user name and password provided byyour ISPfor
authentication. Please followthe steps below.
1. Please select the ADSL/PPPoE radio button.
2. In ADSL/PPPoE Setting: Enter the User Name and Password.
3. Click the applybutton to save your settings.
After completing your configuration, each time the SAboots, it will try to
connect with your ISPand the ISPwill assign the Powerful Server
appliance an external IPaddress. Once successfullyconnected, the
Status field should reflect this. If the Status is still the same, check to make
sure that the username, password, cables, etc. are all correct.

20
Example4:ADSL/PPTPClientSetting
If your ISPprovides a PPTPserver, you could set up the PPTPclient
here.
Please followthe steps:
1. Select ADSL/PPTPradio button.
2. Enter the user name. (You get this from your ISP)
3. Enter the password. (You get this from your ISP)
4. Enter the IPaddress of your host in MyIPAddress.
5. Enter the IPaddress of the server in Server IPAddress.
In the following chapters, we will cover more details of configuring the SA.
