Chassis number
The chassis number (VIN) is indicated in the front left corner of the
dashboard and can be seen from outside the vehicle through the
windscreen. This number is also printed on the front right seat
crossmember, beneath the carpet and is shown on the car
information label on one of the vehicle windows, on the registration
document and on the ownership certificate.

Emergency procedures
3.1 Jump starting
If the battery is flat, it is possible to start the engine using an auxiliary
battery with the same capacity or a little higher than the flat one, or
a booster battery.
IMPORTANT:
Never jump start the engine by pushing, towing or driving downhill.
The battery is located in the engine compartment, behind the front
left light cluster.
- Operate the handbrake and move the gear lever into neutral
(manual gearbox) or into Neutral (automatic transmission) and
the key in OFF position.
- Turn off the heater, the radio and all unnecessary electrical
devices.
- Remove the protective cover over the battery positive pole (+).
- Connect one end of the cable used for positive (+) to the
positive pole (+) of the flat battery.
- Connect the other end of the cable used for positive (+) to the
positive terminal (+) of the auxiliary battery.
- Connect one end of the cable used for negative (-) to the
negative terminal (-) of the auxiliary battery.
- Connect the other end of the cable used for negative (-) to a
safe earth point of the vehicle having the flat battery, far from
the battery and from the injection system.
3. Emergency procedures

WARNING
Do not connect the cable to the negative terminal (-) of the flat
battery. The following spark could lead to battery explosion and
cause serious harm. Only use the specific earth point; do not use
any other exposed metallic part.
- Start the engine of the car with an auxiliary battery, let it run for
some minutes at idle and then start the engine of the car with
flat battery.
Once theengine is started, remove thecablesused as a jumper
in the reverse sequence:
- Disconnect the end of the cable used for negative (-) from the
earth point (-) of the car with flat battery.
- Disconnect the other end of the cable used for negative
(-) from the negative terminal (-) of the auxiliary battery.
- Disconnect the end of the cable used for positive (+) to the
positive terminal (+) of the auxiliary battery.
- Disconnect one end of the cable used for positive (+) from the
positive pole (+) of the vehicle with flat battery.
- Refit the protective cover over the battery positive pole (+).

Interventions with flat battery
4.1 Automatic transmission - gear lever unlocking
If, in the event of a failure, the gear lever cannot be moved from
position P (Park), the following procedure can be used to
temporarily move the gear lever.
- Switch off the engine.
- Fully engage the parking brake.
- Using a screwdriver or similar tool, cautiously divide the lever
unit and the centre panel cover.
- Keep the brake pedal fully depressed.
- Insert a screwdriver or a similar small tool in the access hole (in
the front right angle of the level unit), for keeping the release
lever pressed forwards.
- Place the gear lever in N (neutral) position.
- At this point, the car can be started in N (neutral).
- Refit the access cover for the gear lever release.

5.1 Vehicle towing
5.1.1 Warnings and precautions
IMPORTANT:
Do not allow the attachment devices for towing to touch the tank or
the fuel pipes, because this might cause fuel leaks. Do not lift or tow
the vehicle from the front and rear bumper, or the bumper shock
absorbers. Never pass under a lifted vehicle, unless it is supported
by suitable devices. Do not carry passengers on a towed vehicle.
Use a safety chain independently of the towing system. Failure to
observe these instructions may result in serious or fatal injuries.
WARNING:
While connecting the towing device to the vehicle, pay attention to
prevent any damage to the brake pipes, the exhaust system, the
shock absorbers, the anti-roll bars or any other part under the
chassis. Do not connect the towing device to front or rear
suspension components. Do not fasten the vehicle to the towing
device using suspension or steering components. Before starting
any towing operation, remove or secure the loose or projecting
components of the faulty vehicle. Before towing the vehicle, refer to
the local and national laws in force. The weight of the towed vehicle
should not lay on the lower guards, on the air ducts or on the
spoilers.
WARNING:
Do not tow any vehicle with automatic transmission leaving its
wheels on ground; in this way, you prevent any damage to the
engine/transmission assembly. If these vehicles need to be towed,
make sure that all drive wheels are lifted from the ground.
5. Vehicle towing/lifting

WARNING:
A towing method for the vehicle other than the one described above
might cause severe damage to the transmission. Possible damage
caused by unsuitable towing methods are not covered by the limited
warranty of the vehicle.
5.1.2 Recommended towing equipment
To prevent any damage to the shields and air ducts, it is
recommended to use a towing means with flat bench or lift type.
When a towing device with lift is used, make sure that the end not
lifted of the faulty vehicle has a ground clearance of at least 100
mm. If the minimum ground clearance cannot be obtained, use a
trailer. If the towing device is a flat bed one, the ramp angle should
not exceed 15 degrees.

To define the towing methods, comply with the following table,
according to the model to be towed.
5.1.3 Ground clearance
Lift the wheels of the vehicle to be towed until reaching at least 100
mmofgroundclearance.Makesurethat theendof theexhaustpipe
is at least 100 mm from the ground. Ifnecessary, removethe wheels
on the lifted part and lower them on the ground to increase the
ground clearance at the opposite end of the vehicle. Install wing
nuts on the wheel stud bolts, to hold brake drums or discs.
5.1.4 Towing of a locked vehicle
If a locked vehicle is to be towed, a trailer touching the ground is the
only recommended means.
5.1.5 Towing using a bar, with four wheels on ground
• Vehicles with manual gearbox can be towed with wheels on
ground at any highway speed allowed and for any distance,
provided that the manual gearbox is in neutral and the ignition
switch is in ACC position.
• Towing of vehicles with automatic transmission and wheels on
the ground is forbidden.
WARNING:
Do not tow any vehicle with automatic transmission leaving its
wheels on ground. To prevent any damage to the engine/
transmission unit. If these vehicles need to be towed, make sure
that all drive wheels are lifted from the ground.

5.1.6 Anchorage of the flat bed for towing
WARNING:
Do not apply chains or ropes on the suspension components or in
the engine coupling points, otherwise the vehicle could be severely
damaged.
Vehicles can be secured to a trailer using the reinforced rings under
the front and rear bumper, on the driver side of the vehicle. There
are also four elongated holes, reinforced type, for T or R hooks,
located at the bottom of the reaction elements of the front frame rail,
inside the inner part of the welding junction of the kickplate.
5.1.7 Towing by lifting front wheels
Whenever possible, it is recommended to tow the vehicle with its
front part lifted from the ground. A wooden bar can be placed
between the lift and the lower part of the moulding, to prevent any
damage to the vehicle during lifting operations. The bar can be
removed after having lifted the vehicle's front part.
5.1.8 Towing by lifting rear wheels
Towing of the vehicle with lifted rear wheels is forbidden.

5.2 Vehicle lifting points
IMPORTANT:
The points provided forlifting and attaching the jack are intended for
the entire vehicle. When the engine or rear suspensions are
removed from the vehicle, the centre of gravity is moved, making
certain lifting conditions unstable. In these cases, support the
vehicle appropriately, or fix it to the lifting device. Failure to observe
these instructions may result in serious or fatal injuries.
WARNING:
Do not place the lifting device on any suspension component, front
or rear suspension crossmember included. Do not lift the vehicle
from the front and rear bumper, the lower radiator crossmember or
the front engine mounting.
Do not try to completely lift the vehicle on one side by only placing
a floor jack between the front and rear wheels. This may damage
the vehicle permanently.
