CHAPTER 1. KASPERSKY ANTI-
VIRUS®FOR LOTUS
NOTES/DOMINO
Warning! New viruses appear daily, therefore we recommend updating
the anti-virus database every day in order to maintain the product in up-
to-date condition (more details below). Please remember to update the
anti-virus database immediately after installing the product on the
server!
Kaspersky Anti-Virus®for Lotus Notes/Domino is designed for antiviral
protection of Lotus Notes/Domino-based mail systems. The program is installed
on a server running Linux or Windows NT/2000, and performs virus scans on all
mail traffic passing through the server, as well as on the database files.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus®for Lotus Notes/Domino performs the following functions
on the server:
•Performs virus scans on all the messages that pass through the Lotus
Notes mail system installed on this server. The software searches for
viruses in both message texts and in attached files. In addition, Kaspersky
Anti-Virus®for Lotus Notes/Domino scans for viruses in any attached
archives and packed exe-files, as well as in attached mail messages and
mail database files.
•If possible, the anti-virus program cleans messages infected with viruses,
if this option is enabled. Kaspersky Anti-Virus®for Lotus Notes/Domino
can disinfect both the message text and its attachments.
•Filters files by the name and extension specified in the settings. The files
with this name are processed according to user-specified processing
rules for infected object processing.
•Selects attached database files and mail messages for scanning using
user-specified parameters.
•Blocks any infected, corrupted and suspicious objects in the quarantine
database.
•Notifies users about any attempts to send them infected messages.
•Sends notifications regarding a detected infected object to the recipients
included in the mailing list.

•Notifies the infected message sender.
•Logs the results of its work in the report database.
Please note the following limitations of the program. Kaspersky Anti-
Virus®for Lotus Notes/Domino:
•Does not scan messages encoded with the sender’s secret key.
•Invalidates sender’s digital signature in messages when inserting
the check-up marks and/or replacing the attached files with their
disinfected copies.
•Does not scan files created in OS/2 or Macintosh systems.
•Converts mail messages from MIME format to Rich Text if the
program is installed on a server running Linux.
The program can be configured by any administrator who has access to the
configuration database (see section 5.1 on page 31). The settings are made on a
workstation with installed Lotus Notes client. In addition, if the server supports
the HTTP protocol, the configuration database can be edited from any
workstation via a web browser.
When scanning for viruses, Kaspersky Anti-Virus®for Lotus Notes/Domino
uses an anti-virus database that contains information required to detect
and disinfect a large number of viruses. Kaspersky Lab updates the anti-
virus database with information regarding newly emerged viruses twice a
day.
1.1. What’s new in version 5.0?
Kaspersky Anti-Virus®5.0 for Lotus Notes/Domino has been significantly
improved since version 4.0. The following are new features of version 5.0:
•Now the program supports Lotus Domino R6 Server; the installation
procedure has been improved.
•Version 5.0 is empowered with a new antiviral kernel that has enhanced
the speed and quality of scanning for viruses and treating infected
objects.
•The dependence of program operation on the preset return codes of the
antiviral kernel has been eliminated. Now the administrator can edit kernel
return codes (responses), the object statuses corresponding to each
return code, and actions to be applied to such objects (see
subchapter 5.4 on page 39).

•A preliminarily filtration of objects by name has been added. This feature
assigns certain statuses to objects with specified names and applies
certain actions to objects with specified statuses (see subchapter 5.2.3 on
page 34).
•The web interface and the internal structure of the program have been
improved.
•The program enables viewing extended statistics on program operation.
•On-demand scanning of shared mail has been added. Now all shared
mail traffic can be scanned and disinfected from viruses.
Note that Kaspersky Anti-Virus®5.0 for Lotus Notes/Domino does not
support the license keys for Kaspersky Anti-Virus Business Optimal,
version 4.0!
1.2. Distribution kit
You can purchase Kaspersky Anti-Virus®either from our distributors (retail box)
or in our Internet shop (http://www.kaspersky.com, Buy online section).
When purchasing a retail box you will receive the following distribution kit:
•A sealed envelope with an installation CD (or a set of floppy disks)
containing software product files.
•User’s guide.
•License key.
•License agreement.
Before you unseal the envelope containing the CD (or floppy disks), be
sure to read the license agreement thoroughly.
If you buy Kaspersky Anti-Virus®online, you download the installation file of the
product from the Kaspersky Lab website. This installation file includes this User
Guide and the license key. The license key can also be sent to you by e-mail
after receiving your payment.
The License Agreement is a legal agreement between you and the manufacturer
(Kaspersky Labs Ltd.) describing the terms on which you may employ the anti-
virus product which you have purchased.

If you do not agree to the terms of this LA, you can return the unused product to
your Kaspersky Anti-Virus®dealer for a full refund, making sure the envelope
with the CD is sealed.
If you unsealed the envelope or installed the program, you have agreed to all the
terms of the LA.
1.3. Help desk for registered users
Kaspersky Labs offers a large service package enabling legal users to efficiently
employ Kaspersky Anti-Virus®.

CHAPTER 2. INSTALLING THE
PROGRAM
2.1. Hardware and software
requirements
In order to function properly on a server, Kaspersky Anti-Virus®for Lotus
Notes/Domino needs the following software:
For a server running Lotus Domino R5:
•Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 6a)/Windows 2000 (Service Pack 2 and
higher);
•Linux Red Hat 6.2-8.0/SuSe 7.2-8.1/Mandrake 8.0. Kernel of version
2.2.14.
•Lotus Domino server of version 5.06 and higher.
For a server running Lotus Domino R6:
•Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 6a)/Windows 2000 (Service Pack 2 and
higher);
•Linux Red Hat 7.2-8.0/SuSe 8.0-8.1. Kernel of version 2.4.18.
•Lotus Domino server of version 6.01 (Critical Fix 2) or 6.02.
General Requirements:
•Pentium 133 processor or higher.
•64 Mb of free RAM (128 Mb recommended).
Free disk space is calculated based on an average-sized mail.
The system requirements for Lotus Domino can differ from those for
Kaspersky Anti-Virus®. Make sure that your system configuration meets
both these requirements!

2.2. Installing the program on the
server
Prior to starting installation of Kaspersky Anti-Virus®for Lotus Notes/Domino, you
need to install the Lotus Domino R5.06 (or higher) server.
In order to install Kaspersky Anti-Virus®for Lotus Notes/Domino on the
server please do the following:
1. Using Domino Administrator create the group
LocalDomainAdmins. By default, this group has administrator
access rights to all databases of Kaspersky Anti-Virus®for Lotus
Notes/Domino.
This step is required only for Lotus Domino R5. In
version R6, this group is provided by default.
2. Assign yourself the right to execute agents on the server. To do so,
in the Agent Restrictions group on the Security tab of the
document of the Lotus Domino server on which you install the
program, include the user account that you use to run the Domino
Administrator program in the Unrestricted LotusScript/Java
Agents list. For Lotus Domino R6, also add the user account to the
Run unrestricted methods and operations list.
3. In the LocalDomainAdmins group, include the user account that
you use to run the Domino Administrator program.
4. Copy the kav50en.nsf file to the directory containing Lotus
Domino data. This directory is located in the Lotus Domino root
directory. For example, for a server running Windows NT the
directory can be disk:\lotus\domino\data and for a server running
Linux - /opt/local/notesdata/.
5. Make sure that the Read only attribute (Windows) is absent for the
kav50en.nsf database, i.e. you have write access (Linux).
6. Check the integrity of the database using the Fixup task. To start
the task, type load fixup on the server’s or the remote computer’s
console and specify the kav50ru.nsf database. In addition, the
Fixup task can be launched using Domino Administrator. To launch
Fixup, select the Task and Start items on the Server tab. You will
see the Start New Task dialog box. Select the Fixup task.

You can also restart the Lotus Domino server. During
server startup, the Fixup will be automatically
performed.
7. Using Domino Administrator, sign all the elements of the
kav50en.nsf database. To do so, on the Files tab, find the line
containing kav50en.nsf and right-click on it. Select Sign from the
context menu that will open. In the next dialog window select All
design documents and click OK.
8. After you sign the database, you might be offered a cross
certificate. To get the certificate, click Yes in the Create Cross
Certificate dialog box.
9. Start the HTTP task on the server if it was not started before. To do
so, on the server’s or the remote computer’s console, type load
http. You can also run the HTTP task using the Domino
Administrator program. To do so, on the Server tab, select Task,
Start and in the next dialog window select the HTTP Web server
task.
10. Using any web browser open the kav50en.nsf database (e.g.
http://server address/ kav50en.nsf).
11. On the page that will open (see Figure 1), in the System
Information section of this page check if the Lotus Domino server
installation directories were detected correctly.
12. In the Back end section set the values of the following parameters:
•Path to AV system database – Full path to the directory the
program will be installed to, e.g.: \KAV.
In this case, the the /KAV path means
disk:\Lotus\Domino\Data\KAV for Windows and
/opt/local/notesdata/KAV for Linux.
•Temporary directory path – Full path to the directory where
temporary files are stored, e.g.: C:\TEMPKAV\
You cannot use general purpose temporary directories
like c:\tmp – for Windows or /tmp – for Linux, since
their contents are periodically deleted during program
operation.
•Built-in database name – Name of the Mail-In document
containing the check-up database description, e.g.
KavCheckBox on Server/Development/Local.

13. In the Installation directory field of the Antiviral kernel section
specify one of the following values:
•Full path to the directory in which to install the antiviral kernel
for Windows (if you are installing the Windows NT/2000
version).
•Full path to the directory in which to write the archive with the
aveserver antiviral kernel files (if you are installing the Linux
version).
This directory does not store the antiviral kernel after web
installation (see below). The kernel is always installed into the
/opt/kav/ directory.
14. Click on the Start Installation >> button. In a short while the
installation report will appear in the lower part of the page.
Please, check the report after the web installation.
If you are installing the Windows NТ/2000 version on a server, whereon
no other Kaspersky Labs products are installed, after web installation
do the following:
1. Install Control Centre and Updater. To do this, run
disk:\KAVENGINE\w32\setup.exe.
2. Copy the license key to the disk:\KAVENGINE directory.

3. Restart the Lotus Domino server.
If you are installing the Windows NТ/2000 version on a server, whereon
other Kaspersky Labs products are installed, for example, Kaspersky
Anti-Virus®for MS NT Server, after web installation:
1. Copy the license key to the disk:\KAVENGINE directory.
2. Restart the Lotus Domino server.
If you are installing the Linux version, after web installation do the
following:
1. Extract the archive with the kavengine.tar.gz product located in the
/local/notesdata/Daemon folder into the /opt/kav/ folder.
2. Register the library. To do this, log in with the root user rights, copy
the libcpplin.so.23 library from the Domino folder to the /usr/lib
folder, and type ldconfig in the command line.
3. Copy the license key to the /opt/kav/keys folder.
4. Update the anti-virus databases using the update script from the
/opt/kav folder.
5. Launch the daemon process using the kavstart script from the
/opt/kav folder.
6. Restart the Lotus Domino server.
The key must be copied manually to the same directory the program was
installed to. If the program is running, in order the kernel to load the key,
exit and then start again the kavscanner and kavmonitor modules.
2.3. Upgrading version 4.0 to 5.0
If Kaspersky Anti-Virus®4.0 for Lotus Notes/Domino is installed on your server,
you can upgrade it to version 5.0. To upgrade the program:
1. Delete the KavCheckBox document that refers to the kav_cbox.nsf
database from the Server\Mail-In Databases section of the
address book.
2. Stop your Lotus Domino server.
3. Delete manually the following files:
•Windows NT/2000:

oFrom the Domino folder: nkavscan.exe, nkavshedule.exe,
avp.ver, kavlocres.dll, lcppn21e.dll, and nkavhook.dll.
oFrom the Domino\Data folder: the KAV folder and the
template files kav_cbox.ntf, kav_domcct.ntf, and
kav_qbox.ntf.
•Linux: from the /local/notesdata/ folder: kavscan, kavsheduler,
libcpplin.so.21, libkavhook.so, the KAV folder, and the
templates files kav_cbox.ntf, kav_domcct.ntf, and kav_qbox.ntf.
4. Make the following changes in the notes.ini file:
•Delete the nkavhook interceptor task from the values of the
EXTMGR_ADDINS parameter.
•Delete the nkavmonitor.exe and nkavscanner.exe tasks from
the values of the ServerTasks parameter.
•Delete the line KavOptionsDatabase=KAV\kav_domcct.
5. Delete the program kernel if its version is older than 3.5.9. To
delete the kernel:
•Windows NT/2000: in the disk:\KAVENGINE folder, run
unreg.bat and then delete the entire folder.
•Linux: In the server’s console or on the remote administrator’s
computer type the command kavdaemon – ka and delete the
entire folder of the kavdaemon program.
6. Install the new version of the product as described in
subchapter 2.2, p. 12.
2.4. Configuring the program after
installation
After the product is installed on a server, do the following actions:
1. Start the Lotus Domino server.
2. Make sure that the command modules of Kaspersky Anti-Virus®are
launched. To do this, type sh ta in the command line. The
kavscanner and kavmonitor process must be in the list of running
processes. Pay attention to their statuses.
3. Configure the KavCheckBox document of the address book. To do
this, select this document in the Server\Mail-In Databases section,

open it in the editing mode, and select No Preference as a value
for the Internet message storage parameter.
4. Sign the kav\kav_control.nsf and kav\kav_captured.nsf databases
using Domino Administrator.
We recommend that you update the anti-virus databases immediately
after the installation of the product if this was not performed during the
installation! For Linux, the databases are updated by running the
*update script from the command line. For more detail about updating
the anti-virus databases for Windows see Chapter 11 on page 70!

CHAPTER 3. OPERATING
PATTERN OF KASPERSKY
ANTI-VIRUS®FOR LOTUS
NOTES/DOMINO
Kaspersky Anti-Virus®for Lotus Notes/Domino is designed for protection of
messages of Lotus Notes/Domino version R5 and R6 and higher. After installing
the software product on a server running Linux or Windows NT/2000 with a Lotus
Notes system installed, the program performs virus scans on all the mail
messages of Lotus Notes/Domino. During its work, the program uses antiviral
protection parameters (see Chapter 4 on page 30). These parameters can be
changed by an administrator who knows their access password, from any
computer in the LAN, or by using remote access. To do so he must open the
program using the web browser.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus®consists of the following modules:
•Hook –mail message interception module .
•Monitor –mail message scanning module .
•Scanner –Domino server database scanning module. .
The table below contains the names of executable modules of Kaspersky Anti-
Virus®for Lotus Notes/Domino for Windows NT/2000 and Linux operating
systems, along with their names used in this document.

During its work, the program also uses several databases stored on the server’s
hard disk:
•Configuration database (see Chapter 4 on page 30).
•Check-up database (see section 8.1 on page 58).
•Quarantine database for mail and documents (see sections 8.2.1-8.2.2 on
pages 59-61).
•Report database (see section 8.3 on page 63).
The Hook module and the scanning modules, Monitor and Scanner, start
automatically during boot of the Domino server (if the corresponding settings1
have been made in the configuration file notes.ini). This can be checked in the
respective lines of the report database log (for more details please refer to
section 8.3 on page 63).
After starting, the Hook module intercepts all messages placed by the Domino
server to the mailboxes (mail*.box files), and redirects them to the check-up
database (for more details please refer to section 8.1 on page 57).
The Monitor module scans the messages in the check-up database for viruses
and processes these messages according to the configuration base antiviral
protection parameters (see Chapter 4 on page 30). For example, the module can

quarantine database. In addition, the Monitor module information reports its
actions to the server console and the report database log, provided that the
corresponding parameters have been set in the configuration database.
The Scanner module checks all the Domino server databases, and processes
them according to the preset antiviral protection parameters. All the functions
and actions of this module are similar to those of the Monitor module, except for
the fact that they apply to mail messages instead of the server’s databases.
Only the administrator can start the modules on the server.
When changing the settings, the Monitor and Scanner modules will use the
newly set parameters as early as one minute after they are saved in the
configuration database. The Hook module requires the server to be restarted to
use the new settings.
